      One has to wonder if you got many individual predictions correct, but the major thesis was completely wrong, what does this mean about the professor's biases. He can see individual things that will happen, but struggles putting this into the correct context. I think this is largely due to his biases against WOTC. You can replace every time he says the word "destroy" or "wreck" with "grow" or "bolster" and he would be far more correct. Prof would rather say they "accidentally" made MTG grow than purposely. Hard to continue to trust him.

    Paper Magic for me as someone who started back in Winter of 1996 with "Deutsch Limitiert" (German Black Border Revised with Duals and all), Homelands, Ice Age, Mirage etc. i have fond memories of being 10 years old and going to the small Fantasy/TCG/RPG Shop in the next bigger Town and spend all Day going through the MTG "5 Pfennig(Cent) per Card" Cardboxes with Friends and start collecting and then playing on the Floor in that Store and at Home and i've been collecting since then.
    That Store Owner had a half-burnt Alpha Black Lotus framed above the Counter, back then an Alpha Black Lotus was about 300 Deutsche Mark (so like 300-400 bucks) and even back then we thought "Wow! a Card is worth 300 bucks! and he burnt it accidentally!" - I wonder what that Owner thinks about his half burnt Alpha Black Lotus now, i bet it's still framed haha.
    But yeah Paper Magic is essential for me and most People i know who play and collect as long as i do.
    Thank God Saffron Olive isn't an e-sports/competitive MTG Player, he's one of the last people who plays Brews & Jank and doesn't care much about the Deck being competitive. Too many Content Creators (Not you two either, thank god!) always play the same Decks or purely Tier 1 Decks, which gets boring very fast.

    Sometimes it's not only about the Wizards. In some countries a lot depends on the local distributors WHO work with Wizards, the distributors who are responsible for all paper magic and promotion of the game within a certain state. I can say that in Russia for instance the distrbutors' activity has been in a constant decline for several years (it started before the pandemic, so we can't blame it on that). We haven't seen any promos for Commander legends, nor the ones for Love your LGS etc. Now they are telling us that the release of Kamigawa and Double feature is going to be delayed for some weird logistics reasons. From what we can see in our local community - distribution of Magic in Russia has been locked up in some person's hands (literally, it's just one or two individuals doing that) for quite some time, and currently these persons have got tired (or just lazy) of doing their job but at the same time they don't want to let it go. This confusion and almost total lack of support is now building up in our community and we are about to create a collective petition to the Wizards in order to make them look at our problem and solve it somehow.

    I'm 30 years old and growing up, I learned about Magic from watching 3 older cousins play it. They were playing multiplayer. I'm from a small town and it never had a local game store of any kind. I didn't even know that there was competitive play until I was in college. I learned the game playing multiplayer with my two brothers. Then in college I learned about EDH and have almost exclusively played that and have played it with at least 4 players.
    I wonder how unique my experience really is. I've never known about FNM or GPs or any of that before watching it mentioned it in RUclips and the idea of playing head to head with a stranger is just not very appealing to me whatsoever. None of my friends or family have played competitively in all this time. Yet we all love the game. When I think about Magic the Gathering, I think about multiplayer.
    Just felt like sharing my personal experience, I guess.

    • @fedeiq23
      @fedeiq23 2 года назад +2

      My experience is very similar to yours. At the time, 10 years ago, we had this new friend join our group and one day as we got together he pulled this huge set of cards out of his backpack and casually mentioned what it was about.
      I thought it was just some dumb game at first but that same day we spent the entire evening playing a multiplayer variant that I believe doesn't fit any format I know about... And since that's the way we learned it that's the way we like to play it; always 4 or 6 players in teams, where each individual player has his turn alternating with the adversary, life total is shared, defense is done as a team but attack is individual. 40 or 60 life total depending on number of players. It's not commander though it isn't exactly two head giant either, and every card ever printed is allowed. No maximum hand size limit, which leads to some really fun (or annoying) interactions.
      Also, since MTG cards are hugely expensive here, only recently did we decide to print proxies, which has renewed my love for the game since I can't really afford spending that much money on cards.

The legendary Pandemonium Books and games of Cambridge, where basically everyone who plays magic (and many other games) and works or goes to school in Boston goes to play is somehow not one. New Hampshire, where I grew up, Vermont, and Maine do not have a single premium store. You either need to go to that store an hour out of Boston or I guess be SOL. Arena fails on two points: Cost of entry to play and the basics of what Magic is: a TRADING CARD GAME. Without a thriving card economy and being able to buy tickets and trade for cards you need it just fails. Zero interest in putting money into that hole.

    When I first started playing Magic: The Gathering, I was told that once you get good, you can make money since Wotc pays you in tournaments, that’s what compensated the overly expensive packs. I’m starting to think most people don’t believe that Wotc owes something to competitive paper mtg players

    • @Volkbrecht
      @Volkbrecht 2 года назад +4

      Because they don't. Interestingly enough, I know a number of pretty competitive players, who went to any GP they could afford the time and money for attending. But I hardly ever saw anyone, casual or competitive, fanboying over specific players. The pro scene as such was appealing to a certain type of player, but it failed to produce the kind of heros of the "sport" that could be marketed to fresh players. That's why it ultimately was scrapped.

    The best part about Magic is The Gathering. Gathering with friends in person to play games is always going to be leaps and bounds better than any online game. The peak of multiplayer video games was the system link days because you may have been playing a video game but you were gathered with your friends in person.

    I think major events going to third parties could have a positive side effect that's kind of hinted at with the mentioned Charmander tokens, which is to say, the allowance of proxies. If specifically unsanctioned events become a thing, who's to stop event organizers from allowing some form or another of proxies in, say, a Legacy tournament they choose to run? In a roundabout way, it could _improve_ accessibility into formats like that, specifically with reserve list cards. It would also be an opportunity for WotC to circumvent the list as well by selling, say, some kind of special "commemorative" version of the cards that "aren't tournament legal" except, you know, as proxies in events WotC doesn't sanction (like gold bordered cards).

      For buying new product, especially the Standard sets, ordering directly from the big distributors like Games Island (set display price: about 100 €), is the cheapest option, but amazon really scores with non-Standard sets, because they still get restocks when the first wave supply has dried out in the rest of the market.
