On this channel we like to do a lot of dogfighting most videos are some sort of dogfight between 2 different aircraft as we explore their different capabilities. From time to time I like to dabble in Virtual Reality, I think VR is a great new technology and I love to show that stuff off for the channel from time to time.
If you enjoy war thunder or Microsoft flight simulator 2020 or even dogfighting in Battlefield 2042, consider getting yourself into Digital Combat Simulator by Eagle Dynamics, the Combat side of Aviation with the BVR and Dogfights really provides a different and interesting perspective on aviation. You can fly all kinds of combat aircraft including the F-16, F-15, F-14, JF-17, Su-27, Mig-29, Mirage and the F-18 Hornet along with many other aircraft and helicopters like the Ka-50 and Mi-8. Игры

37mm was the standard anti tank gun for most militaries in early ww2, no wonder it hits like a sledgehammer on planes
Just to note, the 37mm anti tank gun shot a different cartridge. 37x250mm vs the 37x155mm in the mig. The Mig's gun is still gargantuan for a plane, but still shot a projectile half the weight at a slower velocity than the antitank gun.
Ww2 video footage showed 30mm cannons blowing off the tail of a plane with 1 round.
It makes me wonder if the Russian affinity for 37mm stemmed from the lend-lease P39.
@C.J. The Germans helped Russia develop several cannons, including the 37mm, after WW1. Pretty ironic they would be used against them a few years later.
@@c.j.1089Not to mention the LaGG-3, YAK-9, etc...
The thing that DCS cannot simulate with a MiG-15 is pilot fatigue. It didn’t have hydraulic boosted flight controls. So it could become very fatiguing for the pilot.
It had boosted ailerons but not elevators. Or vice versa i can't remember.
Other way around, boosted elevator, no ailerons. Also the reason why it rolls so slowly.
The pilots also didn’t have any Gsuits.
And if they descended too quickly, their canopies dog up bc their air conditioning sucked
@@MustangsCanTurnTooThat’s a myth.
The Mig 15 elevators the trailing edge were hinged and that is why they lost elevator control at high speed.
The F-86 had solid elevators that pivoted. They learned from the Bell X-1 when the US tried it for the 1st time.
Early Sabres had a traditional horizontal stab with elevator (just like MiG-15), F-86E switched to flying tail. Traditional hinged flight surfaces (rudder and ailerons also) are susceptible to large increases in control loading (amount of effort needed to move them) as the transonic shockwave moves aft of the hinge point and onto the control surface itself. Flying tail and ailerons were hydraulicly boosted so control loading was a non-issue (provded greater control authority at higher speeds).
Also... shockwave formation and travel on upper and lower surfaces isn't symmetric and can result in interesting phenomenon like "mach tuck" (negative pitching moment) -- which was a significant problem for the P-38.
Also if i remember correctly f86 had hydraulic assist while mig it was all pilot muscle 💪😉
Optical / visual differences between the F-86 and the Mig-15:
- Mig 15 has a circular front air intake with a vertical divider, which is also cut of perfectly vertically (when viewed from the side); F-86 has a slightly „squished“ air intake with no vertical devider, and the upper edge / lip goes out further than the lower one.
- Mig-15 has its horizontal stabilizer at about 2/3 hight of the vertical stab, while the F-86‘s is mounted at the bottom.
- F-86‘s Cockpit is slightly longer (when viewed from the side) compared to the Mig-15‘s / Mig-15 cockpit is more „stubby“
- yellow stripes on the F-86‘s livery
Best way to identify them in my opinion
Front/ back view :look at the location of the elevators and if the wing is center or bottom mounted
From the side: look if the nose is flat or has a bit of a curve/point to it. And look at the size and the overlap of the vertical stabilizer (tailfin).
Top or bottom view: again look at the nose and look at the sharpness/pointines of the wingtips.
So please ppl off before shooting cause I still get killed by friendlies on enigma's in both planes too often because they confuse the 2 😂
I always looked at the tail for the "t" before I took a shot.
That F86 "upper lip" has the ranging radar which simplified the firing solution dramatically and made the Sabre a killer.
@@ElectroAtletico never knew that!
Mig15 it's one of my favourites, I used to see them flying in parades in my country until the early 2000's. The Mercedes of jets
I would rather say a VW Beatle ;)

Can you do a generational MiG battle? I’d love to see the MiG-15 go up against the MiG-21 in a guns only dogfight
Id like to see that
@@IronDuker8339 hell yeah, I think it would be a decent matchup
Mig-21 could decide when to fight and when to disengage. Mach 2 capable vs high subsonic. If the mig-21 pilot kept the fight in the vertical it’d be pretty one-sided
Missles are cool and all but theirs something so satisfying about a matching gun kill. That’s why I like ww2 era dogfighting just a little more.
Higher speed induces compression on the control surfaces, compressibility. Especially in the swept back wings of the Saber and mig 15. It’s a high sub-sonic problem that plagued many aircraft before the introduction of moving the entire stabilizer. Great vid brother!
9:30 - The aircraft weren't 'painted' silver. Silver is the aluminium aircraft's natural, unpainted color.
From what I understand, early jets only had their logos (squadron markings, country's roundels, etc.) painted on, because jet aircraft were so fast and vibrated so much during flight that the paints available at the time would chip off quickly. Repeatedly painting a fast fighter aircraft was deemed as wasteful.
Said it yesterday and will say it again. It would be very interesting to see the F-86 and the Mig-15 dogfight the A-4!
I learned from a youtube short that the cutouts in the ribs on the wing are there to allow the pilot to see the landing gear indicators pop up once the gear is deployed. You can see these at the end of the video in the external view.
Gotta ask again for some F8 Crusader action!
Great video, nice follow up to your Sabre video of yesterday .. Cheers!
I sat in a MIG-15 when I was a kid. Grew up close to a Soviet base in the 70's Poland. They had an old stripped one that kids played on. We also have one at the Hill AFB museum (it may be a Mig-17 actually). Cheers.
Some questions:
1. Does DCS model the MiG-15's critical Mach number (0.92), and the automatically deploying air brake system connected to the Mach meter?
2. How well does DCS model the elevator and aileron forces in the MiG-15? At speeds over 400 knots, both would become extremely heavy, reducing roll and pitch rates, and making it difficult to stay with the F-86E/F in a one-turn fight?
3. Does DCS model the tendency of the MiG-15's gunsight to tumble in high-G maneuvers?
Most of these weaknesses were exploited by U.S. pilots in Korea, negating the MiG-s advantages in acceleration and rate of climb. A lot of those weaknesses carried over into the MiG-17F (except for the Mach number limit), and were exploited by U.S. pilots in Vietnam.
In todays episode: after going out in the blaze of glory, GS somehow survived, but was captured by the Nork special forces. Several sessions of... Persuasion later, he's betrayed his homeland and now flies the migs! Stay tuned for more GS Adventures!
lol
Going to an airshow this weekend with a mock Mig-15 vs F86 dogfight. Super excited for that and you release this today, what are the odds.
Love these old classics.... Make ww2 stuff some times... Like bombers stuff etc!
Bombers would be legendary. Is there p-61 in dcs?
So ccol to see those old birds again! And when it's ending with a nice smooth landing, not so often 😉
Anyone who's enjoying this, good news is DPRKAF is still operating the type, if you show up as volunteer pilot at the gates of the 38 parallel you may get a chance to fly these against KF16s and F15Ks of the ROKAF... Good hunting comrades 😉🤣🙌
The difference in using the cannons vs the 50cal is actually massive. I'm very surprised they didn't decide to put the 20mm on the Sabre. It would've been a very deadly aircraft if it had the 20.
Oh actually they did put 20mm s on Sabres on later variants
I believe its the F2 Sabre they put the 20mms on.
Believe it or not, the .50 calibers were a far more effective weapon. It's not the size of round that was important. It was the volume of fire the weapons could produce. How much weight in lead the F86 could fire was higher than that of the MIG 15. The .50 cal rate of fire in early F 86's was about 1250-1300 rounds per minute per gun. The Mig 15's 23mm shot around 550-600 rounds per minute and the 37mm was about 450 rpm. Although the rounds are bigger in the Mig 15, the F -86 shoots faster, farther and more accurately.
This early jet fighter's duel is... very exciting. The battlefield, the aircraft, the pilot's experience, a prelude to the era when everything just started... The silvery surface and the smell of radiation. The threshold of transition from the human age to the present dominated by science and technology...
I love these Mig-15 videos.
The scream sound would have been perfect for when that plane crossed your nose at Mach .9 on the deck at 70° angle lmao
If the MiG-15 is this effective, I can't wait to see what the MiG-17 thats in development will be capable of. Fingers crossed that it makes it to DCS!
Lol man the gun effectiveness is so dramatically different. I'm sure any Sabre pilot would've killed for a 20mm.
Nice. I love some good ol GS Mig back alley.
I have read that this was a big issue with Soviet fighters, the convergence between 37mm and 23mm is too much and US 105 drivers reported the fireballs went opposite ways. Kind of like a P-39 or a P-63
When that first Sabre exploded, I'm surprised candy didn't pop out. He looked like a piñata just hanging there.
Love the older aircraft. More man V man instead of missile V missile.
Reading how F86 pilots would engage the migs is actually quite entertaining. You going high and coming down on the F86 was a common mig tactic as the Migs had a higher flight ceiling.
I was wondering if the canopy fogging of the mig is modeled. When the mig dove from high altitude to low altitude the canopy was notorious for fogging up. F86 pilots used this to their benefit all the time.
Are there bombers in dcs? If so it would be interesting to see you use turrets.
3rd time of requesting to do TOP GUN 2 bombing mission in the exact same way. Great flying skills by the way, as always.
Thanks again.
You're my favorite DCS dude.
Had flashbacks to playing CYAC in the early '90's. "That's great flying"
F-86 and MiG-15 are two of the best-looking aircraft in history.
There's something beautiful about how they fit form to function, yet they both still have impressive form.
9:30 yeah, but it looks rad as hell
There's a mig-15 and a mig-21 at the airport in Glendale Arizona. I believe they're privately owned but they just sit outside. I filmed them as a short
@Growling Sidewinder you say at 1.12 that when the MiG-15 goes too fast you can't control it. It seems that you are describing a phenomenon known as Mach Tuck, meaning that when you're aproaching the Sound Barrier (> M 0.7), the aerodynamics change, leading to increased drag, loss of control ability due to the disturbed air flow on the control surfaces and in many occasions structural fluctuation. It was firstly reported by late WW2 pilots when they couldn't control their aircrafts in high speed dives. Early 50s aircrafts were not designed to cope with this problem and it was only solved when what is known as the Area Rule was developed. Look it up, it's a very interesting topic that you can make a video for your other channel
Ur right that’s the exact thing I was talking about thank you
Thank you! This was my request! (or at least, I was one of the people who requested it!)
EDIT: A-10 vs F-4J!
That BF1942 theme..... Good memories.
Thanks sidewinder, I fing love the mig/sabre content! Any chance you can do some IL2 VR content? I like the big dogfights, and I like watching you clean up.
Sick landing dude
"Put your mask on. It's gonna be a gunfight."
I really would like to see shoot-down replays between the F-86's and the MiG-15's. Any specific reason you don't do replays for them?
Please try Griphen vs F5E
what version of the F-86 is in DCS? the performance of the saber varies greatly between the models. the later models introduced a more powerful engine, a flying tail and hydraulically boosted control surfaces which eliminated the non-responsiveness that occurred at high-g manuevers
It claims to be an F-86F-35 (according to the DCS manual)
The best of the breed were the Canadair and CAC versions, which had higher speed (697-700 mph), a higher power-to-weight ratio, a much better climb rate (12,000+ FPM), and a heavier armament (2 x 30mm Aden cannon in the CAC Sabre). Only the Canadair Sabre Mk.6 saw combat, in the first and second Indo-Pakistani wars, and it was only retired by the Pakistani air force in 1980.
One day id like to see the MiG-17 make it to DCS, this was a great air battle!
Lets see them at high altitude next!
Nice flying Growling! When I am in a defensive position like that, I like to force overshoots by snap rolling aggressively. Makes you really hard to hit. Dropping flaps helps you turn better when slow; it lets me pull that little bit of lead I need when they overshoot. Love your videos bro!
Do similar designs, shaped aircraft suffer this same control surfaces lead-sled freeze up at transonic speeds? I hear all the time, MiG-15 and MiG-17 suffer this issue, but is it the same for things like Mystere, F-86, F-100, J-32 ?
You nearly got rammed by an ally MiG when you were closing in on that oblivious Sabre
try the P-39/63 airacobra with the 37mm
Is this PVP? Love your videos! Thank you!
A general question (not related to your video, sorry) but does anybody feel that DCS aircraft are lacking in "ground friction"?
That is, on landing and sometimes takeoff, you slide all over the place, almost like you're on ice?
Something I was going to ask on the forums, but thought I would ask here too.
All my realism and physics is set to maximum.
Thanks in advance.
More mig content pls
"Go vertical, bro" needs to be on a t-shirt
F -80 Shooting Star and F9F Panther next!
Its crazy that North Korea still has about 30 of these still flying.
Amazing ending music 👍👍👏👏👏
WWII style dogfighting at breakneck speed.
That 37 mm could probably take down a dragon
It did!
That's why we don't see any dragons anymore.
The 37 mm Oldsmobile cannon was in the P-39’s we gave to Russia during WW2
Always love these Korean era dogfights! I think they painted them silver to protect agains nuclear blast radiations.
Do the Royce Williams vs. 4 MiG 15's dogfight next.
That first kill!!
It would be cool if they come out with a MiG-17F module.
Another great one...
11:41 that shot tho
"Flying between tracers" is kind of an odd statement. Usually, every third round is a tracer. That means that between two tracers you do see, there are 2 regular rounds that you don't see, but are there...
Hi guys is it possible to spectate on the ground watching these dog fights. If so how do u do it?
is there any records of a pilot being shot by the enemy as they descend in their parachute after ejecting?
Can we see you escort some b-29s through North Korea or even a Bomber intercept as a Korean or Chinese mig
I'd love to see dcs model a Leduc..
The control lock is due to poor critical mach number. These old type of control surfaces accelerated the air too much at the lifting side when deflected, and the air reached mach 1. The waves on the lifting side interrupt's the boundary layer, and lift starts to drop. In severe cases the wave creates so high pressure, that the lift vector flips, and reverses the control. This is very dangerous when you try to pull up to decelerate, and the nose starts to drop even faster. This is called a "mach tuck".
Silver would have been a lack of paint, for weight savings if i remember correctly
How Gus son said : It’s the pilot not the plane.
Battlefield Theme be kicking!
7:02 "I'M A GIRAFFE"
You should do f18 legacy hornet vs f18 super hornet.
What made the MiG-15 a great plane was the British Rolls Royce engine. Damn British Labor party was in power and allowed its export to the Soviet Union.

Once again they haven’t got the Australian version of the F86 Sabre with the Rolls Royce Avon engine and 30 mm cannons . I would like to know are they going to bring the Australian version out?
good stuff!
You can really fuck up someone’s day with the 37 mm.
Would you explain “spinners”? In real time I understood that spinners were as big a threat to MiGs as the F86 was.
How would the F86 or Mig 15 fair against the Me 262? I'm curious to see a video on that
Both would immediately destroy the 262. The swept wings of the Mig and Sabre are far superior then the straight wings on the 262 and they are also faster. Not a challenge for the snares and migs but it could be interesting
@@pewpew3377 Figures as much! But it would be interesting with GS in the Me262.
My testimony for tonight ☺️💞👏👏 Amen 🙏💞
great video
What mission is this? Would like to run it to learn the mig15
