    On this channel we like to do a lot of dogfighting most videos are some sort of dogfight between 2 different aircraft as we explore their different capabilities. From time to time I like to dabble in Virtual Reality, I think VR is a great new technology and I love to show that stuff off for the channel from time to time.
    If you enjoy war thunder or Microsoft flight simulator 2020 or even dogfighting in Battlefield 2042, consider getting yourself into Digital Combat Simulator by Eagle Dynamics, the Combat side of Aviation with the BVR and Dogfights really provides a different and interesting perspective on aviation. You can fly all kinds of combat aircraft including the F-16, F-15, F-14, JF-17, Su-27, Mig-29, Mirage and the F-18 Hornet along with many other aircraft and helicopters like the Ka-50 and Mi-8.

    One tip for the La-5 and La-5FN- those outlet cowl shutters have a huge effect on top speed; literally 40kph+ between 0 and 100%. During a winter map you should have definitely been able to close them more than what was in the video.
    It's one reason why hit weather can seriously affect the La-5's performance.

    Russian 20mm shells did not have as much explosive filler as all the other Allies, and especially the German "Minengeschoß" shell. That's why they tend to act more like machine guns than cannons.

    Just have a quick curiosity question for you. When you fly the warbirds, do you ever adjust your gun convergence? I've played around with it and find I have my best shots around 300-400, depending on the plane/ammo. I'm curious of what your go-to's might be.
    Always appreciate and enjoy your content!

    • @GrowlingSidewinder
      @GrowlingSidewinder  Год назад +16

      Hi there yes back in the day I use to play with the convergence a lot but I think I finally found my sweet spot so I don't touch it anymore I currently have it set at 350-360. and I've found my accuracy to be good with that convergence while staying back far enough to sit inside control zones or get a few seconds of ammo pumped into a bomber before their gunners can walk tracers onto me.

    • @zanaduz2018
      @zanaduz2018 Год назад +5

      it doesn't matter nearly as much with the La-5 and its cowl-mounted firepower. Typical convergence ranges tend to be in the 250-500m range, depending on taste and intended target (you'll want further for strafing ground targets or attacking bombers, closer for maneuvering dogfights against fighters).

    Regarding GS's comment on the 20 mm (ShVAK) cannon in the La-5 feeling less destructive than the 20 mm (Hispano II) cannon of the Spitfire - there are 2 key factors explaining why this is so.
    1. Lower rate of fire - the La-5's ShVAK cannon are in the engine cowling and are therefore synchronised with the propeller. This lowers the rate of fire by around 20-40% depending on propeller revolutions, relative to the Spitfire's wing-mounted Hispano cannon which fire outside the propeller arc.
    2. Projectile weight - The 20 mm ShVAK cannon fires a HEI (high explosive incendiary) projectile weighing 95 grams. The 20 mm Hispano II fires an HE projectile weighing 130 grams. The Hispano projectile is longer, and holds more high explosive inside it. So it does more damage when it hits and explodes.

    • @urielmanzone1772
      @urielmanzone1772 Год назад

      Shouldnt the ShVAK also fire mostly fragmentation rounds?

    • @timonsolus
      @timonsolus Год назад +2

      @@urielmanzone1772 : HEI is a fragmentation shell. The weight of the HE is only a small percentage of the weight of the shell.
      The ShVAK HEI shell has a smaller explosive charge and a thicker shell wall, this creates a smaller number of large but (relatively) slow moving fragments, and also spreads a small amount of incendiary (burning) chemicals.
      The Hispano HE shell has a larger explosive charge and a thinner shell wall, this creates a much larger number of small, but faster moving fragments. So the 2 shells do damage in different ways.
      The ShVAK cannon also fired an API (armour piercing incendiary) shell, a lot of these were included in ammunition belts. The Hispano II cannon did not have an AP shell, and fired only HE (the British weren’t interested in piercing armoured seats and plates). This is another reason the Hispano did more damage against unarmoured areas of a target aircraft, more HE shell hits means more explosions, creating bigger holes.

    • @Dafmeister1978
      @Dafmeister1978 Год назад

      The ShVAK also had a lower muzzle velocity, even compared to the short-barrel Hispano Mk 5, in spite of having a lighter round, probably because of the shorter cartridge case - 99mm compared to the 110mm of the Hispano round. Combine the two factors and you'll have significantly less energy in the round.

    • @timonsolus
      @timonsolus Год назад

      @@Dafmeister1978 : True, although muzzle velocity affects accuracy more than it affects damage (with HE).

    How the heck do you manage to be so good with the basic LA-5? It's impossible to extract anything out of that machine, even in single player.

    Hey man, thanks for your exciting content! You are right about 20mm Soviet guns - it would be more accurate to name them just 20mm machineguns, and the HE shells are pretty weak. Btw, AP rounds could easily get through enemy's plane and kill the pilot - so it makes more sense to shoot into the plane's body to get the pilot

    Hey GS, I'm about to make the choice between TrackIR and VR and I was hoping you could tell me your thoughts on the logistics of wearing glasses with the Pimax headset. It's something I don't see talked about at all really when it comes to the VR vs head tracking discussion.

    I wonder what the Russian 20 mils were loaded to, in terms of powder. Also, the weights could be different than the other allies, ie, the density of the 20 mill rounds could be lower.

    The LA5’s cannons in IL2 sound like .50 cal due to their rapidity of fire and their report. Maybe they are modeled as .50s.
