On this channel we like to do a lot of dogfighting most videos are some sort of dogfight between 2 different aircraft as we explore their different capabilities. From time to time I like to dabble in Virtual Reality, I think VR is a great new technology and I love to show that stuff off for the channel from time to time.
If you enjoy war thunder or Microsoft flight simulator 2020 or even dogfighting in Battlefield 2042, consider getting yourself into Digital Combat Simulator by Eagle Dynamics, the Combat side of Aviation with the BVR and Dogfights really provides a different and interesting perspective on aviation. You can fly all kinds of combat aircraft including the F-16, F-15, F-14, JF-17, Su-27, Mig-29, Mirage and the F-18 Hornet along with many other aircraft and helicopters like the Ka-50 and Mi-8.

F-22 Raptor VS Nine North Korean MIG-29's BVR
Love your videos, but the prices for those computers is absolutely criminal, not worth the price whatsoever, the somewhat decent 3060ti one is like double the price it should be, and the 3070 one... jesus, i bought a prebuilt with a 3070 back in march of last year for 1500, before the prices got good
Imagine hearing the story of this guy. Something around 8 to 10 enemy air to air kills. Untouched yet lands without a propeller. Crew chiefs would be amazed.
'Crew chiefs would be amazed'
I disagree. If the pilot TOOK OFF without a propeller, then yes, crew chiefs would be amazed.
Some of the American B-17s landed in pretty rough shape. I'm sure you've heard of some of them. One example would be the Memphis Belle
@@DrymouthCWW theres a difference between landing very damaged and being a double ace in a day and the only damage you have is to your prop.
literally a scene from a movie
A normal day in the VVS.
The sounds in IL2 are incredibly high quality
"just the tip" had me rolling. lol. Happy Thanksgiving man
That bonk I felt in my soul. Just be thankful the props deflected it and it didn't skewer the pilot.
One tip for the La-5 and La-5FN- those outlet cowl shutters have a huge effect on top speed; literally 40kph+ between 0 and 100%. During a winter map you should have definitely been able to close them more than what was in the video.
It's one reason why hit weather can seriously affect the La-5's performance.
😳0:19 sounds just like UK actor Lawrence Fox ! 👌
"Just the tip! Just the tip!" GS Thanksgiving 2022
Nice Job filling the "Tip" Jar.
The best part is emergency landing 👍👍😘
No flaps next time when trying to make the runway.
Pig ugly airplane, but sturdy!
Early love your videos!
Do you always land your planes like that?
Always
@@GrowlingSidewinder XD
@@GrowlingSidewinder Maybe its a good thing you are not actually handling multi-million dollar equipment XDDD
"Any landing you can walk away from" lol
@@The_Original_Brad_Miller hahaha XD
Just the tip, and only for a minute?
More ww2
is this in vr?
yes, Pimax 8kx
08:04 I love how we didn't realize the crew escaped until after we rechecked the crash footage. And how they perfectly landed over the airfield was so cool. As always a good vid man. Keep it up!!
I find these more enjoyable than the modern stuff. Just more fun I guess. Happy Thanksgiving 🍁🦃
The commentary by Growling Sidewinder gives you a bird's eyes view.
I think any video where there is a mission/objective is much more enjoyable than the dogfighting videos.
did we just watch sidewinder commit an actual warcrime?
…..no.
That’s not what u saw at all.
Uh oh. Gonna have to deal with this witness the soviet way.
Yes! And not committing to the Gentleman agreement!
He was flying with Soviet plane so he basicially had to commit them.
La-5 was Lagg-3 which went from 1100hp inline engine to 1700hp radial , so was huge improvment
1250 to 1700 actually so it wasn't that huge
@@tedarcher9120 Early LaGG-3's had 1100hp engines and later had 1260hp engines, only 160hp increase. So yes, whether it be 1100hp or 1260hp to 1700hp, it was a massive boost. And if we talk the La-5FN then it is 1960hp.
A lot more drag though; power alone isn't a good comparison.
If you think the 20 mm feel underpowered, you should try the Hurricane with the 303 machine guns. Might as well be using spitballs. Even with 8 or 12 guns, you have to pump a lot of lead into an enemy aircraft to bring it down.
From dahl's diaries, you needed to really aim well, the engines were the only bet.
Hard to believe the equivalent of 3 miniguns at full tilt would have a hard time shooting down anything
Seems like he did a video about these old rounds a couple of years ago, and shows footage of actual ballistic tests. I'll see if I can find it
@@No-wayjose0 it’s not the power of the bullets it was getting close enough and actually hitting the target with them that was the problem, I think 🫣
Russian 20mm shells did not have as much explosive filler as all the other Allies, and especially the German "Minengeschoß" shell. That's why they tend to act more like machine guns than cannons.
"That'll buff right out" Every Soviet era crew chief
The Russian 20mm was tiny compared to the German and American rounds. The Hispano Suzi cannon used by the Western Allies was a beast compared to the Russian rounds. The German M high explosive projectile was also a beast.
They would be good if they ever worked correctly. Part of the reason why Brits and US used so much MGs on their planes instead of auto cannons was because they couldn't get the HS and AN/M2 to work reliably.
Just have a quick curiosity question for you. When you fly the warbirds, do you ever adjust your gun convergence? I've played around with it and find I have my best shots around 300-400, depending on the plane/ammo. I'm curious of what your go-to's might be.
Always appreciate and enjoy your content!
Hi there yes back in the day I use to play with the convergence a lot but I think I finally found my sweet spot so I don't touch it anymore I currently have it set at 350-360. and I've found my accuracy to be good with that convergence while staying back far enough to sit inside control zones or get a few seconds of ammo pumped into a bomber before their gunners can walk tracers onto me.
it doesn't matter nearly as much with the La-5 and its cowl-mounted firepower. Typical convergence ranges tend to be in the 250-500m range, depending on taste and intended target (you'll want further for strafing ground targets or attacking bombers, closer for maneuvering dogfights against fighters).
"And he said 'Hold my flap'" 🤣😂
Yo dude, awesome choice of aircraft, last time you asked for what WWII fighter we wanted to see next I was one of the ones calling for the La-5! Dunno if that had anything to do with your pick but I dig it regardless! Hope to see you in a 150 octane P-51D doing something like the Battle of Y-29 soon!
I love how your emotions really come out in the "historic battle scenarios". You're always cool (mostly) during modern dogfights. But, these WWI and WWII fights seem to get your blood moving.
Ah that Thanksgiving tradition, watching Growling Sidewinder shredding the enemy during the seige of Stalingrad. Another fun video. 🦃
The Soviet 20mm cannon might be a bit weaker than the British/American 20mm because it does not have a lot of HE filler. (IIRC the best Soviet 20mm explosive shell had a HE filler of about 5 grams of A-IX-2)
Hold my flap!
Today I kicked a year 7 into the stratosphere because he wasn’t subscribed to growling sidewinder
fair
A grade 7er?
Nice vid bro
A SEAD mission with Ukrainian or Russian su25 could be niiiice
Jets are fun and all but I love the WW2 vids much more!
Regarding GS's comment on the 20 mm (ShVAK) cannon in the La-5 feeling less destructive than the 20 mm (Hispano II) cannon of the Spitfire - there are 2 key factors explaining why this is so.
1. Lower rate of fire - the La-5's ShVAK cannon are in the engine cowling and are therefore synchronised with the propeller. This lowers the rate of fire by around 20-40% depending on propeller revolutions, relative to the Spitfire's wing-mounted Hispano cannon which fire outside the propeller arc.
2. Projectile weight - The 20 mm ShVAK cannon fires a HEI (high explosive incendiary) projectile weighing 95 grams. The 20 mm Hispano II fires an HE projectile weighing 130 grams. The Hispano projectile is longer, and holds more high explosive inside it. So it does more damage when it hits and explodes.
Shouldnt the ShVAK also fire mostly fragmentation rounds?
@@urielmanzone1772 : HEI is a fragmentation shell. The weight of the HE is only a small percentage of the weight of the shell.
The ShVAK HEI shell has a smaller explosive charge and a thicker shell wall, this creates a smaller number of large but (relatively) slow moving fragments, and also spreads a small amount of incendiary (burning) chemicals.
The Hispano HE shell has a larger explosive charge and a thinner shell wall, this creates a much larger number of small, but faster moving fragments. So the 2 shells do damage in different ways.
The ShVAK cannon also fired an API (armour piercing incendiary) shell, a lot of these were included in ammunition belts. The Hispano II cannon did not have an AP shell, and fired only HE (the British weren’t interested in piercing armoured seats and plates). This is another reason the Hispano did more damage against unarmoured areas of a target aircraft, more HE shell hits means more explosions, creating bigger holes.
The ShVAK also had a lower muzzle velocity, even compared to the short-barrel Hispano Mk 5, in spite of having a lighter round, probably because of the shorter cartridge case - 99mm compared to the 110mm of the Hispano round. Combine the two factors and you'll have significantly less energy in the round.
@@Dafmeister1978 : True, although muzzle velocity affects accuracy more than it affects damage (with HE).
You are especially aggressive in this episode... shooting burning planes on the ground. You miss your Wheaties or something? Thanks for the videos!
ikr man woke up and chose violence xd
Well he is playing as a Soviet
Hope you had a great Thanksgiving assuming you're American. 😁
The Russian 20mm is basically a 50bmg necked up to 20mm. That's why it feels shitty
Sudden stoppage means that engine is probably done also… can’t just put a prop on it and send it.
This last guy never made it home but instead forcefully sent you home.
I think what's throwing off your aim is the higher position of cowl-mounted verses wing-mounted guns.
The WWII videos are fun, because it's a lot easier to keep track of what's happening.
Helluva landing, in this one, too!
Hi GS! Thank you for your work and happy Thanksgiving! Can you do a dogfight with a merge at 60,000 feet?
Love the little BDA clips after each kill!!
That starting bit with the Katyushas made my skin crawl. One of the most terrifying sounds in existence.
I remember the old one....love these WWII brutual fights lol
"just a tip" 🤣
when will be the next il-2 video?
FANTASTIC AS USUAL!!!!!!!!👍😃
Been a long time since I even looked at il2 but could your 20mm be over penetrating? Also that prop and wing dip could probably be repaired
What is the ideal gun convergence distance? I get taht it will vary from fighter to fighter, but whats a good average +/- range?
I think it’s personal preference but I have mine set at 350.
Pls post more IL2
2:40 GS is signing up for his trial
I hope OctopusG's La-7 For DCS World will destroy with their 20 mm cannons. Can't wait to fly that bird!
In 1942 the Germans were still smashing the Soviets in the air. Many of the really big scoring aces started their careers in 42'-43'. But yeah the La-5 was making it a little more difficult
Revenge for Yuri was today served cold. Ice cold.
The N**i hordes were dealt another crippling blow by our glorious brothers in the sky.
The besieged army in Stalingrad is withering on the vine.
From a peak of 600,000 troops Von Paulus' 6th Army has less than 100,000 troops remaining.
Starvation and the cold are our greatest ally in the defence of the Motherland.
The wingtips are the equivalent of "I am coming for your kneecaps"
The Russian 20mm is actually smaller in length to what the USA and Allies(probably) so the American 20mm has more gun powder in the case to give it more power. So that’s probably why you feel like it’s not as good.
Just watch the movie “Devotion” about Jesse Brown in theaters and it had an amazing 2 v1 dog fight between mig-15 and corsairs 😁 can you try to replicate that on a video 🙏🏽 also amazing movie!!!
That was a sweet landing at the end 😂😂😂
Hahaha "I'm collecting wingtips l" LMAO
12:25 "aircraft is totally fine except for that" just a fleshwound, buddy
F-22 Raptor VS Nine North Korean MIG-29's BVR

Except for the whole, "bent propellor" thing. 🤨😁

Day 41: F 15 STOL vs SU 57 Dogfight!!!
day #6 off asking for more superhornet content
Love IL 2, I have VR myself and would love to get IL 2.
You should, it runs very well in vr compared to dcs and it's currently on sale. I'd recommend also picking up bodenplatte or kuban, these sales are only once in a couple months.
Some how I can't seem to switch camera to gun cam/ combat cam can anyone help what setting it is
Love the handbrake skid on landing 👍🏻
I hope you received the Order of Lenin for that performance!
The pure intensity...8k pimax....it is not justified on youtube sadly...but a dang good advert for IL-2 Sturmovic
What are the costs for basic IL-2 downloads?
Yo is that the narrator from the bionicle commercials?
Nice! Oh yeee.....okey bye 😅🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
What are the gunners doing, are they sleeping?
some pacific theater? wild cats? corsairs?

Fw 190 gameplay next? 😁
Much prefer non-modern dog fight

2:17 eehm.... nothing happened 😅
Come on, man! Just the tip!
11:31 Our kill comrade
One way to feather the prop. . .
Is the Russian 20 mm, less effective due to Ap to He ratio?
They actually use Fragmentation rounds, they don't really explode but break up and cripple the control surfaces etc, but yeah, they're less effective (and cheaper) than He rounds
@@urielmanzone1772 thanks man.
Yeah, that'll buff out.
More like this
Yay! WWII content!!!
“just the tip” AYOOOO
Awesome video 👍😉
Can we see the medals?
When IL-2 PC?
How the heck do you manage to be so good with the basic LA-5? It's impossible to extract anything out of that machine, even in single player.
Hey man, thanks for your exciting content! You are right about 20mm Soviet guns - it would be more accurate to name them just 20mm machineguns, and the HE shells are pretty weak. Btw, AP rounds could easily get through enemy's plane and kill the pilot - so it makes more sense to shoot into the plane's body to get the pilot
Hey GS, I'm about to make the choice between TrackIR and VR and I was hoping you could tell me your thoughts on the logistics of wearing glasses with the Pimax headset. It's something I don't see talked about at all really when it comes to the VR vs head tracking discussion.
I wonder what the Russian 20 mils were loaded to, in terms of powder. Also, the weights could be different than the other allies, ie, the density of the 20 mill rounds could be lower.
The LA5’s cannons in IL2 sound like .50 cal due to their rapidity of fire and their report. Maybe they are modeled as .50s.
