Having been to the Scott Joplin house museum in St. Louis, I learned a lot about his music. One of the more interesting and simultaneously depressing things I learned there was that songs like Pineapple Rag and Maple Leaf Rag were named that way because (at least in part) Scott Joplin had no control over what the album and song covers would look like when released, if you look back at some of Joplin's pieces before he took up this naming scheme many of the covers have very racist artwork. So this naming style gave the cover artists much less design liberties or opportunities to be racist in the art they made for his song covers.
wow, I had no clue. it’s sad he had to contend with that just to make a living, but it’s also pretty admirable how he fought for some dignity in his art
This performance of Maple Leaf Rag on guitar helps explain how the Piedmont blues style of flat picking evolved in the early 20th century. Thanks for sharing.
Greetings! Thank you for introducing us all to an alternative performance of the Maple Leaf Rag! This is not a song I am accustomed to hearing and seeing played on a classical guitar, but is well suited to the instrument. Unfortunately, for much of the performance, the microphone is in the way and is blocking the viewers from seeing what the fingers are doing while the song is played, this could be corrected by re-recording after placing the microphone in a position that is not obstructing our view. I am sure that there are many guitarists that would like to learn to play this song, as well as other rag-time songs written by Scott Joplin. Nice performance! Thank you for posting these videos! Please have an excellent and awesome day! ☀️✨
I heard this by Leo Kottke or other guitar players years ago ... in some circles here in my country Canada it became very popular actually because of its title... good stuff... thank you.
Bravo. Thanks for sharing. I really appreciate and enjoyed this tune. I was once able to play this rag. I was unable to play it as smooth as it sounds played by a fine piano player. I think you got it and that is quite an accomplishment.
Great tempo. Scott Joplin would be pleased. He put, "Do not play this piece fast. It is never right to play 'rag-time' fast. Author," at the top of his music.

I got recommended of this after watching a few maple leaf videos. I think if you chose a more modern (slightly clickbaity) title, this can blow up. It’s very, very good! For example, “What happens when you play Maple Leaf Rag is played on a guitar..”
I have been unsuccessful finding the sheet music for this performance: he says it is an arrangement by Alan Jaffe. Anybody know where I can find the music sheet for this arrangement?
Not only does he play this so well, but he really seems to be enjoying himself!
If I could play ragtime I'd enjoy myself too :)
If you could play it that spot on you would too!

Heard it half a billion times on piano, and love it. Now I think I prefer it on guitar.
Nah bro violin is better
Yeah, ragtime crosses over to guitar nicely.
Marvellous. Such skill and dexterity. Much practice I am sure.
He seems to be really enjoying himself. So nice to see and hear. Really impressive playing as well, very clean.
Holy Moly. Rag on guitar is something I now need in my life. Thanks for this!👍☺️👍
Ragtime on a guitar is basically bluegrass guitar picking style lol. Check out Frankie by Mississippi John Hurt
Check out Pat Donahue version of this. amazing
I can just barely play this, such a fun song when you're in a situation people are being silly and you want to increase the drama lol
What an amazing Guitar you have, sounds awesome and Your playing is outstanding. Thank You

He might have the tab available, Mike
He's not showing you a tutorial on how it's played, if you want to play if, find the tab or music sheet for it
I love ragtime and this style of playing . I could listen to this for hours !
I usually hate this on guitar, but not this time. It is pure, unlike many bad piano versions. Thank you.
Thanks. I like it a bit faster nowadays.
Thank you so much, that was incredible. Never heard that on guitar before.
Nicely done. And, yes, the Maple Leaf Club was in Sedalia, Missouri. Its former site is now marked by a bronze plaque in a parking lot.
I enjoyed this and did so thoroughly. I'm a musician who loves most types of music and respect talent.
Wonderful playing very difficult music!
My favorite song of all time , I never thought I’d hear it on a guitar ... BRAVO !! BRAVO!!!!!
Check out adam neely he played it on electric bass guitar as a teenager

Fantastic job, it sounds beautiful
Amazing Doug! Thank you for sharing your talent!

That's great! Thanks for sharing.
Wow!! That is all I can say! AMAZING PLAYING! Thank you!!
Exceptionally well done, thank you. While I play, I couldn't do this if my life depended on it.
Excellent… Thank you very much...
Good show, sir! That looks really fun play.
That's super hard to do. It's fun to watch

Really nice work Doug
Watch Richard Smith play The Entertainer. Unbelievable
I wouldn't call it 'unbelievable.'
@@solideomusical well to me it's really good.
@@Strings-jg2to Me too! I just wouldn't say 'unbelievable.' 😉
That was nice, great command of his guitar!
Beautiful. I learned this once, and you play it much better than I could ever have done.
excellent
Hello Doug 👋
Most excellent rendition of a great classic
Best regards
Just wish that microphone was moved a bit. Difficult piece, I am truly impressed!
Magnífico!❤

I want to learn this!! One minute in, ok, I’m not learning this, at least not right now 😂
So impressive!
Rev. Gary Davis played this with a little more verve.
beautiful
Lovely
Great video!
WOW...awesome
Flawless!
Great master eagle.
I'm lucky if I can strum a I, IV, V chord pattern and not make cats cry; this dazzled me utterly.
Beautiful playing!
Very nice and smooth. Most enjoyable!
Funny how I can hear the similarities of this and the Super Mario Brothers theme !
Impressive, thanks for sharing!
Fantastic!
superb!
This man looks at music the way my doctor looks at my prostate.
Analytically, I presume. it's a curse.
Bravo.
Great mike placement lol
Very good.
Wow, sounds great on the guitar !
I love rag time music 🎵🎶
Lovely! A classic.
Bravo sir. A great arrangement too.
Good Pickin Sir !
Very clean!
Dude killed it
Awesome!
Terrific!
Great work!
Fantastic
Now watch how Adam Fulara played that :)
I smell "The Entertainer" in this. Not a bad thing
"The Maple Leaf Rag" and "The Entertainer" were both composed by Scott Joplin.
@@gregorymoore2877 That explains it.

Well done. Sycophantion is not so easily done on a guitar. Nor is multiple parts simultaneously.
Sycophantion. Great new word.
@Dan Gates were you thinking Syncopation?
First Copy Written in 1899.Well before WW1.And actually in A flat
That was just AWESOME.....As a guitar player, I know what it takes to master something like this.....Yo1
Put it on 1.5 speed to make it sound like the original
Well done
sweet!
Really nice

You had better proofread your proposed title.
I don't know where I know this music from.
But it's really familiar, and driving me crazy because I cannot remember.
OMG! So cool! Beaautiful
Reverend Gary Davis did this the best on guitar. More soul
I almost like the guitar version as well if not more than the piano version. 😊
Beautifully played - what a shame he moved the microphone and I can't see what his left hand is doing on the first three frets!
Totally agree.
Wonder if this guy has heard of Richard Smith
Yes, a fantastic player!
I raise your Richard Smith with my Paola Hermosín!
@@ParaBellum2024 I think they would play well together
👍🏻👍🏻👏👏😎
And played nice and slow. :)
🎵🎶🍁🤗🤗
Beautifully played but the guitarist put the mic right in front of his left hand - what was he thinking!?
That's the kind of thing you don't know you did until after the fact. But, I agree, that was annoying.
Fine-dining rag.
Need more fret-buzz!
Awesome stuff. Is the full concert posted anywhere?
Yes, you can view other pieces recorded for a TV show on my channel
I have been unsuccessful finding the sheet music for this performance: he says it is an arrangement by Alan Jaffe. Anybody know where I can find the music sheet for this arrangement?
Too bad the sound recording wasn’t optimal
Very good indeed ...classically trained?
Thanks, yes, classically trained. Now I like to take a bit faster. Cheers, Doug
@@dougschmolze7205 Ah thought so for that degree of excellence...well done.
eff me. the most important parts are blocked by the mike
