I am from Jaffna, Sri Lanka, and have lived all my life in Matale and Colombo. I used to be very proud of my country and encouraged everyone to visit and enjoy the serene natural beauty , culture, food, and most of all the people. Nothing has changed except for the fact that my country has become poor, and it is reflecting on every aspect of people's way of living. The Sri Lanka I lived in from the 1960's to 1980's is not there anymore. Northern region looked beautiful with courtyard style houses with gardens, people commuted either by bicycle, public transport or walked. Colombo was so well organized with buildings that were built with regulations, the rural Sri Lanka was an absolute haven where the farming families thrived and lived a comfortable life. Everything is changed because of the corrupt and cunning politicians who racially divided the nation for their political gains. I am praying for the revival of our prosperous Sri Lanka. I am planning to start a tourism business in the next few years. My courtyard style 120 years old house is getting ready to host tourists and I will invite you Ellis to visit Jaffna again.

Did you find the people of Northern Sri Lanka more reserved and less open ? Not many tourists visits so fewer people speak English. There are two major Tamil communities ...the Sri Lankan Tamils, who came to the island in waves of migration starting from the 3rd century BC, and the more recent Indian Tamils of Sri Lanka, who were brought as indentured labourers by the British during the colonial period
Have you tried Jackfruit curry? It has the consistency of meat . Jackfruit has many benefits..it helps with high blood sugar levels ,Has Anti-cancer, Anti-hypertensive, Anti-ulcer, and Anti-ageing Properties and contains vitamin c .
That root vegetable you saw in the market was most probably a yam .there are many varieties.
the best incense sticks for mosquito repellent are Citronella, Lemongrass, Cedar, Palo Santo, Lavender,Sandalwood, Eucalyptus, Rosemary, Dragon's Blood, Champor and Patchouli.. that egg hopper didn't look up to much ....
The golden Hindu temple is called Nallur Kandaswamy Kovil and is the largest temple complex of Sri Lanka's Tamil community. It is called Jaffna's spiritual centre of Hinduism.
Coconuts are smashed in front of Murugan shrines when making vows and hoping wishes will be fulfiled
It seems its cracking flags outside. .

When somebody smashes a coconut outside a Tamil temple (25:46) it is a prayer that their personal problems or sorrows should get blown to bits like that coconut. But when a whole coconut is offered inside a temple, it is deemed as an offering to the deity, and it is usually returned by the priest as "prasadam" to the person making that offering - it becomes sanctified - and can be eaten later on (unlike the smashed coconut which is not consumed as it has a negative connotation). In some other places, instead of coconuts, huge pumpkins (or ash gourds) are smashed. Similar concept.

South-East Asian countries, except Tibet, have theravada Buddhism. Every single odradained monk in theravada Buddhism comes from a lineage that was ordained when Buddha was living. The difference between Theravada Buddhism and other types is that in Theravada Buddhism, only follow the teachings done by Buddha. but in other types, they follow various things added later. Every single Theravada monk in the world can trace back to a temple in Sri Lanka. Called Mahavihara in Anuradhapura. Anuradhapura kindom lasted about 1600 years. Buddism spread to the world from India around 2300 years ago; from north India to Sri Lanka to the east to as far as Japan and western modern-day Afghanistan, Pakistan were Buddhist countries. A king in India sent monks all over the world at that time. Buddhism spread through the Silk Road. But invaders targeted Buddhism, and Buddhism almost vanished from India. but it always thrived in Sri Lanka. Even when south Indian invaders invaded the whole country, monks went to north India and hid in the jungles of the down south and hills. They protected the teachings. Even Thailand, Myanmar, Malasia, and Indonesia (both of those countries were Buddhist countries) got Buddhism from Sri Lanka after Buddhism faded from those countries because of invasions.
The lineage of all of the Theravada monks in the world can be traced back to the time of the Buddha and, after that, to Mahavihara of Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka.

Hello @Ellis a small correction, Tamils are not and never Hindus but shoved into this Hindu bucket. And, once upon a time Tamil Nadu and srilanka was connected together but later separated due to rising ocean levels making Tamils minorities in the NE Sri Lanka. Sri Lankan Tamils are the natives of this island and the Sinhalese population migrated to the island from NE India many thousands years ago. Ethnic violence and Tamils struggle for autonomy, equal right and freedom has impacted this beautiful island.

So you 0:02 landed in Colombo, found it extremely hot & so decided to head to the Jaffna region generally regarded as the hottest & the least scenic part of the island. Was this because you guys were doing a penance for Lent ?
Tourists generally miss out Jaffna, or if they stay long enough may add it on their list only after covering the rest of the island. BTW the area you guys were living in Colombo , Wellawatte has for many decades been known as" little Jaffna" due to many from the north having moved to the area.

    • @EllisWR
      @EllisWR  8 месяцев назад +2

Hey ahah everywhere is hot. It was actually cooler than Colombo in Jaffna. We don't really have any interest in tourist destinations. We don't want to spend our time around other foreigners or eating in foreign targeted restaurants etc.
We just wanna visit normal places and meet normal everyday people 🙏
We didn't know that either but yeah there were quite a few Tamil people in that area, it was a nice place tbh

@@EllisWR, Cooler than Colombo? Well that is a surprise. Appreciate that you dont want to be like normal tourists, but hope not at the expense of missing out on all the popular sights & scenes on the island.

@@truebelief3631 I think we got lucky! We also find it pointless to do what everyone does on youtube and make the exact same 10 videos in Sri Lanka.
In all honesty the most popular sights anywhere are always turned into developed tourist traps and it's no fun for us so we will just explore and enjoy Sri Lanka on a local level. Maybe you'll enjoy our adventures here.
      Have a lovely day

6:42 It's a bit concerning that they don't have handwashing liquid at the sink, and the people working there aren't wearing gloves.
But that (and the open air 'toilets') aside, the place does look gorgeous, especially the variety of fruits and vegetables, the nature, the weather, the temples and the churches. And the area is absent of garbage on the streets. Could do with some sidewalks though in some places.

Tamil is the OLDEST language under the sun and NOT complicated as you think cos 99 % Tamil words are Phonics -How we write is How we pronounce.
In English, so many Tamil words became English words with some distortion.
    For example.
    Kasu - Cash
    Pechu - Speech
    Methu - Smooth
    Pin - Spin
    Thaakku - Attack
    Surungu -Shrink
    Wenru - Win
    Kollu - Kill
    Kaththi -Cutlery
    Kattu Maram - Catermaran
    Naavai - Navy
    Marakkaai - Marine
