When somebody smashes a coconut outside a Tamil temple (25:46) it is a prayer that their personal problems or sorrows should get blown to bits like that coconut. But when a whole coconut is offered inside a temple, it is deemed as an offering to the deity, and it is usually returned by the priest as "prasadam" to the person making that offering - it becomes sanctified - and can be eaten later on (unlike the smashed coconut which is not consumed as it has a negative connotation). In some other places, instead of coconuts, huge pumpkins (or ash gourds) are smashed. Similar concept.
Hopper guy's skills were amazing..your faces show pure joy eating them...sunsets were spectacular...43.03, the blue church is 'Vailankanni Church', there is another main cathedral in Vailankanni, Tamil Nadu...very miraculous with apparitions of Mother Mary multiple times and she also rescued the Portuguese sailors from a storm.
The oil he mentioned is Sesame oil. In Jaffna it’s quite popular and made in a traditional way from pure sesame seeds. It’s healthier than any other oils. In my opinion, I think tourists should try to go into Nallur temple cuz it’s way more beautiful inside. Tea here is different from of India, even the way of preparation is slightly different.

So you 0:02 landed in Colombo, found it extremely hot & so decided to head to the Jaffna region generally regarded as the hottest & the least scenic part of the island. Was this because you guys were doing a penance for Lent ? Tourists generally miss out Jaffna, or if they stay long enough may add it on their list only after covering the rest of the island. BTW the area you guys were living in Colombo , Wellawatte has for many decades been known as" little Jaffna" due to many from the north having moved to the area.
Hey ahah everywhere is hot. It was actually cooler than Colombo in Jaffna. We don't really have any interest in tourist destinations. We don't want to spend our time around other foreigners or eating in foreign targeted restaurants etc. We just wanna visit normal places and meet normal everyday people 🙏 We didn't know that either but yeah there were quite a few Tamil people in that area, it was a nice place tbh
@@EllisWR, Cooler than Colombo? Well that is a surprise. Appreciate that you dont want to be like normal tourists, but hope not at the expense of missing out on all the popular sights & scenes on the island.
@@truebelief3631 I think we got lucky! We also find it pointless to do what everyone does on youtube and make the exact same 10 videos in Sri Lanka. In all honesty the most popular sights anywhere are always turned into developed tourist traps and it's no fun for us so we will just explore and enjoy Sri Lanka on a local level. Maybe you'll enjoy our adventures here. Have a lovely day
6:42 It's a bit concerning that they don't have handwashing liquid at the sink, and the people working there aren't wearing gloves. But that (and the open air 'toilets') aside, the place does look gorgeous, especially the variety of fruits and vegetables, the nature, the weather, the temples and the churches. And the area is absent of garbage on the streets. Could do with some sidewalks though in some places.
2:37 that's coconut chutney to be particular its getti chutney or thick chutney. Its a hard to find variety nowadays. Its ground using a stone grinder with very little water so it has a concentrated flavour like the one you seen in the old hotel in madurai if you remember.
@@EllisWR sadly most restaurants don't make it today as much because to cut costs they do the runny version of chutney instead. Getti chutney and a thick dosa is just fab. In Karnataka it's pretty popular even today if u were to visit there try there once. The butter / benne dosa and getti chutney.
Breaking coconut and offering it to God is a symbolic act of offering oneself to God. The act of breaking coconut during festivals, auspicious occasions, buying new car/land or even starting a new business has been a part of Hindu tradition for ages now.
Tamil is the OLDEST language under the sun and NOT complicated as you think cos 99 % Tamil words are Phonics -How we write is How we pronounce. In English, so many Tamil words became English words with some distortion. For example. Kasu - Cash Pechu - Speech Methu - Smooth Pin - Spin Thaakku - Attack Surungu -Shrink Wenru - Win Kollu - Kill Kaththi -Cutlery Kattu Maram - Catermaran Naavai - Navy Marakkaai - Marine And so on and on.

In all honesty we've never been asked to show a license in any country we've rented. If they do ask your standard driving license would suffice. We don't have an IDP either so we are uninsured. All depends on how happy you are with personal risk 🙏

Both of u look roasted, biking around town. I dont understand the part where it was so difficult to order a fresh juice 😅😂😮 ... u two have fun n be safe! U go Alicia!! Yay! ❤
Ahah the sun absolutely roasted us!! I think that was the hardest juice we've ever ordered don't know what was going on ahaha.
Have an amazing day
@@EllisWR love u two! Yay! For 100k subs soon!
There is a huge jaffna tamil population in london. So many sri lankan restaurants have hoppers and all lankan food.
We will have to visit then!
Palm jaggery broath mixed with appam's dough , formed the sweet appam . You try so nice and idiyappam with cocunut milk and puttu with ghee and banana so yummy....
Mmm so delicious
We just wanna visit normal places and meet normal everyday people 🙏
We didn't know that either but yeah there were quite a few Tamil people in that area, it was a nice place tbh
Have a lovely day
Don’t miss the Sinhala and Tamil new year which comes in just 12 days.. its the most festive season in sri lanka. Extend ur visas n stayyy 🎉
The oil you smelled is sesame oil widely used by Tamil people
Thanks!!
April is festival month because sinhala and tamil new year❤🎉,I think, you can enjoy more❤❤
Watermelon juice is good for hot day ❤
6:42 It's a bit concerning that they don't have handwashing liquid at the sink, and the people working there aren't wearing gloves.
But that (and the open air 'toilets') aside, the place does look gorgeous, especially the variety of fruits and vegetables, the nature, the weather, the temples and the churches. And the area is absent of garbage on the streets. Could do with some sidewalks though in some places.
I mean we couldn't care less, we never get ill and rarely ever wash our hands. It's a fantastic place.
Come to Deniyaya. If you come ,you can visit world heritage sinharaja rain forest and patna
2:37 that's coconut chutney to be particular its getti chutney or thick chutney. Its a hard to find variety nowadays. Its ground using a stone grinder with very little water so it has a concentrated flavour like the one you seen in the old hotel in madurai if you remember.
31:05 it's gingelly oil or sesame oil.
Thanks!! It is always so good
@@EllisWR sadly most restaurants don't make it today as much because to cut costs they do the runny version of chutney instead. Getti chutney and a thick dosa is just fab. In Karnataka it's pretty popular even today if u were to visit there try there once. The butter / benne dosa and getti chutney.
you both are like me with tea 🍵 I also like my tea 🍵 strong 😊👍
Best way! No good if It just tastes of milk and sugar!
Vanakkam ellis 🙏
Vanakkam!

Good morning, Ellis and Alicia. Hi, hi 👋 👋
Hey hey hey!!
Don’t forget to visit Wilpattu national park where u can spot some leopards.
Sounds epic
Breaking coconut and offering it to God is a symbolic act of offering oneself to God. The act of breaking coconut during festivals, auspicious occasions, buying new car/land or even starting a new business has been a part of Hindu tradition for ages now.
Not sure if the coconuts shells are something to do with vegans or stopping animals being killed , I have a Sri Lankan friend here
Tamil is the OLDEST language under the sun and NOT complicated as you think cos 99 % Tamil words are Phonics -How we write is How we pronounce.
In English, so many Tamil words became English words with some distortion.
For example.
Kasu - Cash
Pechu - Speech
Methu - Smooth
Pin - Spin
Thaakku - Attack
Surungu -Shrink
Wenru - Win
Kollu - Kill
Kaththi -Cutlery
Kattu Maram - Catermaran
Naavai - Navy
Marakkaai - Marine
And so on and on.
Yes we know how old it is aha watch our Tamil Nadu series.
It's difficult for us though the pronunciation can be a tad tough.
Don't blow your own trumpet always in everywhere
@@SereneSounds-rs6fz Be humble and be respected eh!
Here’s another one. Areesi- rice
@@EllisWR we are always humble, that is why we do not claim or try to convince others that our language or culture is the oldest in the world, especially when someone else tries to speak our language.
This is kind of worship smashing coconut In another way kind of offering. Jey

Welcom to srilanka 🇱🇰❤👍
Thanks so much!!
wow! the contrast in no. of views between the India vlogs {avg -> 300k} and other country's vlog {avg -> 30k} is massive! like 10x more...
Most populated country on earth that's why ahah!
are you guys gonna explore nuwara eliya? Def underrated compared to places like kandy
How is it over there? I see there's already like 900 youtube videos there which puts us off visiting really we like to mingle with locals Ideally!
@@EllisWR it has a chilling climate like in UK, that's why Brits called it little England. It might be sunny these days because it is April.
You should try the seafood in Jaffna. That' s a must....

You guys can handle spicyns really well than other foreigners ❤🫶
We can eat anything! People are usually so boring aha
Did you hire you bike on a Uk licence or did you have to use international licence?
In all honesty we've never been asked to show a license in any country we've rented. If they do ask your standard driving license would suffice.
We don't have an IDP either so we are uninsured. All depends on how happy you are with personal risk 🙏
Thanks for the reply- Sri Lanka by tuk tuk her we come. I believe if you invest in Sri Lanka you can get citizenship. Wouldn't that be great? I wonder if you could have unlimited access to India and Nepal if you were a Sri Lankan citizen?

Ahhh super!
Even though we Eelam Tamils share same Tamil with Tamilnadu but out food, houses + way of life are similar to those of Kerala which also were a Tamil CHERA kingdom just 600 years ago and they mixed Tamil with other languages and became another language called Malayalam (itself a Tamil word).
Very nice ❤
