Man, I love these videos because they're the most interesting commentaries that i can enjoyably watch without getting confused. Good job and keep up the great work
I play Doom 1 and 2 on PS4 so the master levels came with Doom 2 already. There was a trophy for finishing all of them so I gave it a try. Some of them are very confusing, but others were bpetter. One level had you cross over an invisble platform to get a key which was frustating. So, I definitely haven't cared for them. Awesome video, I always look forward to when you post a new video!
I believe another way to play the Master Levels is to get them from the Unity release of Doom 2, then extract all the master levels of Doom 2, similar to how people used that to run Doom 2: No rest for the living, outside of the Unity Port. Also, the levels are separated by wad files, due to this you play each level separately, causing you to pistol start evey level. Also, some levels have secrets that are useless, I mean they have a ton of goodies, but they're at the end of the level. One theory suggests that all levels was planned to be merged into a single megawad.
If you think the Master Levels are mediocre, try playing the bonus levels that came on the disc with them: "Maximum Doom" Fun fact, Maximum Doom contains, among other things: -the entirety of the first three episodes of Doom I converted to Doom II -early builds of some of the first few levels in TNT. -one level that exists only to show off all the various floors and ceiling textures in a single room -a zoo with exhibits for each kind of demon -a level of a mall with impressive custom textures for concrete, a fountain, trees and cyber demons turned into glass panes -lewd yet tasteful photos of women in various states of undress. -custom sound effect replacements ripped from popular early 90s sitcoms.
Don't forget that one deathmatch wad that had a map where a regular square room got so screwed up it's verticies got inside of eachother, turned in and out, literally everywhere.
@@cowrocks3630 Oh yeah, Map 09 of dth2pcom.wad. That level was originally made for Doom I, entitled lavapit.wad. While nobody is certain how it got messed up quite so badly, the best theory I've heard was from Maximum Matt, who thinks someone opened the level up in a map editor, and did the mapping equivalent of scribbling all over it.
2:44 "Boring, confusing, and frustrating" is my exact thoughts of 2's Master Levels. I only beat like 60% of them and didn't really like any of them :/
TL;DR: master levels suck, but there’s a midi pack that can make it better. God, the master levels. A few things to note: these were fanmade maps meant to, and I quote “give the D!ZONE guys a run for their money” especially given how companies would produce shovelware map packs and sell them for a quick buck, so I guess this is more of a designer showcase in a similar vein to community chest, the nova series, or Japanese Community Project…just less good. I won’t say it’s completely awful, the Tim willits levels, attack and canyon, are fun, the late Dr Sleep has a few maps that are alright, and Sverre André Kvernmo (cranium) has probably the best map in the form of black tower. But unlike TNT where the maps that are good are really good and the bad maps are really bad, when the master levels get good, they aren’t really better than “Okay” and when it’s bad, it’s some of the worst in all of classic doom. A few to note is Christen Klie who worked on Catwalk, combine, fistula, garrison, subterra, and subspace. All of them have a distinct lack of polish even compared to TNT’s worst, subspace being the worst of it. I also know Jim Flynn gets some shit for titan manor, but I found trapped on titan to be worse in terms of being a grueling map that is not fun to navigate. Then there are the two most infamous maps, TEETH and Mephisto. TEETH, or The Express Elevator To Hell, basically being an elevator full of rooms with cheap claustrophobic trap after cheap claustrophobic trap, having to take down barons (or hell knights?) and revenants on a raising and lowering platform with a super shotgun, which is not ideal, and a secret exit which requires an archvile jump. At least the secret level, bad dream, is fun. Mephisto’s Mausoleum might be the worst map in all of classic doom. Yes, including habitat, the chasm, sewers, and betray. Being one long icon of sin level where you have to deal with revenants on thin ledges or snipe them with the super shotgun in a pit, chip away at mancubus health, then deal with barons and chip away at arachnotrons, and then shoot rockets at an icon of sin protected by a bunch of spectres! It’s cheap, it’s overlong, it’s unfun, and I hate it, even after UV-Maxing it. If there’s anything good about the master levels, it’s that you don’t have to pay for it anymore (and it’s not removed from steam, it’s just sold with doom 2 in a package alongside final doom), and Peter Lawrence would create a midi pack for its 25th anniversary, which is an absolute treat to the ears and makes the master levels kind of bearable…well….KIND OF bearable…
the master levels are something that i randomly think about and think "maybe i should try it again" and then proceed to just forget about it or just lose interest.
Terrible opinion. Titan Manor and Black Tower are two of the best maps from the original releases. Master Levels has some blandness but the highs are high.
@@shorty1k what are you talking about? In Master Levels, the only good levels are the very first one. black tower and titan manor are some of the worst levels here.
What are YOU talking about? Attack is good but extremely straightforward, typical Willits map. BLACKTWR, TTRAP, and MANOR are ornate, well paced, fun encounters, and some decent environmental storytelling, especially given the time. You're either spoiled off newer wads or are a simple man with simple taste?@@themisterdellou
I think they're not bad, but certainly there have been far better custom maps since then. Too many to name 30 years later, but the official add-ons commissioned by Id/ Bethesda are literally just the tip of the iceberg. Maximum DOOM is objectively far worse in quality. I'd rather rip my eyeballs out then have to play it, lol.

The level "black tower" I think was the best level from the master levels and it is probably one of my favourite levels in classic doom.

WAD file for Master Levels, maybe?
