Hi, Jess; US citizen here who just returned from London. Unfortunately, one of my travelling companions suffered a medical emergency while there and passed away. I can honestly tell you that the people we encountered both before, during and after the emergency were incredibly kind, compassionate, and helpful in assisting us with navigating what we needed to navigate. We had to stay some extra days, but didn't feel like "sightseeing," but didn't want to be holed up in the hotel room until we could leave either. Your resources we so helpful assisting us with choosing something to do to just get outside but not mingling with a lot of tourists, and how to get around without breaking the bank. I see now why you love London so much - I'm forever grateful. Thank you so much for all you do.

On our first trip to London as a couple my wife had five to six places to visit each day. I had her break it down to one main item and a second back up. After visiting some of the museums we found that they take a full day to just scim the surface of one museum. Fortuately we found that some are open late, and we were able to get two items in. We have now visited London six times and still have things we want to go back and see. :)

I spent almost three weeks in London back in 1985. I loved it. I would live there if I could. We did plenty of the tourist stuff, the museums, changing of the guard and stuff. But we also went everywhere on our own and had no concrete plans each day. We went one day, up to Wimbley Stadium to see it, since Live Aid was only a few months prior to my time in London. We also took the tube down to Wimbledon and took the tour and saw Center Court. That was cool. We walked across the Tower Bridge at midnight one night and took a black taxi from there all the way back to the west end to Gloucester Place where we were staying. It is one block over from Baker St. We went up to St Johns Wood and saw the infamous crossing where the Beatles crossed for the album cover. Actually, my very first night in London was in an apartment further down on Abbey Rd. My girlfriend was in college in London and I stayed with her my first night there. Then we found a BnB on Gloucester Place and stayed there my entire trip. She flew to Austria from London for Christmas when I had to fly back home. We've been married for 34 years now. We also saw the musical Starlight Express in the Apollo Theater while I was there. It was cool. We did a lot. But we did it our way and didn't have an itinerary or plans and just did what we chose to. I did do some research before I left of things to do, museums and such, but we winged it and loved it. We also went into tons of department stores to experience them. We went to Harrods, Debenhams, Selfridges, Liberty and Co, plus others I can't recall now. It was a great trip. I would love to go back to London but not really sure if I will ever get to.

1985? It might as well have been 1885 in some aspects such are the enormous changes. Mass tourism didn’t exist then and it has ruined the experience in many parts of the city. On the positive side, however, the food scene has improved beyond all recognition also the transport system despite problems is better now. As a Londoner I have a love/hate relationship with my city but overall it’s still probably the greatest city on earth.

London is a beautiful city and I am very glad that I have gotten to spend a lot of time there within these past few years. This city will also always hold a very special place in my heart too.
In case you haven't heard - Starlight Express is actually coming back to London next year - to the new Wembley Park Theatre, right around the corner from Wembley Stadium. If you do end up back in the city while it is running and want a nostalgic repeat of events.
Best wishes to you and your wife!

@@lara_bejes7890 Thank you so much for your reply. I love London and would love to go back. Probably never will but I want to. Yeah starlight Express was cool. We sat in the balcony above the track they skated on. The Apollo Theater was cool.

I know this is a few months ago now, but I had to reply to you because I was there in 1985, too! But, more importantly, my husband and I just returned from our trip to London 3 days ago. What stood out to me is how many tourists were there from all over the world. I was there June-August 1985 and it was not packed with people. It was my husband’s first time and he didn’t love it. I love the underground, but you must move fast and if you get in anyone’s way they’re not cheerful about it; almost like being in a video game.
Most all of the major museums have throngs of people now. I remember going to the British Museum several times and never having a crowd. Now it’s like a wrestling match to see the Rosetta Stone.
We didn’t focus on food (which many now say is better) but I’m so glad I got to be a part of London in 1985. I wouldn’t change those memories and I knew I’d not be going back to that time and place, so I had to psychologically prep myself.
I hope you do get to go back one day, but cherish those special memories you have. And if you never do return, just know you were once part of what I’d call a more authentic and real London. That’s worth something. I didn’t even see one punk rocker when we were there. 😂

    • @thecoolestdad
      @thecoolestdad Месяц назад +2

@@daffodilfleur Thanks for the comment. Yeah I know London was a much different place back in 1985 than now. Less crowded. Yes I also saw the Rosetta Stone with no crowds. The entire British Museum was low crowds when we were there. Since I haven't been back since 1985, I can't fully compare the London of 1985 to the London of 2024. Yeah seeing the punk rockers with crazy hair back then was bizarre especially for the time frame back then. The museums were very cool and educational as well. It's probably a certainty that I won't ever get to go back to London again. But like you said, I do have some great memories of being there in 1985 and if I can I WILL go back again.

We were in London the first week of October - and HATED it. It wasn't crowed as it would be in the summer time , but we found it to be a very dirty city. Sure the tourist areas had a 24 hour cleaning crew but in other areas we found litter all over. Even the little parks near Victoria station were full of trash...homeless all over. Night time we didn't feel safe around our hotel...with lots of shady people walking around. And oh yes, the Victoria tube line is horrible. How old are those cars? 50 years old...the seats were filthy and it was so noisy. To be honest London was worse than Paris.
Even the local pub "ran out" of the Sunday meal and it was only 2 in the afternoon LOL. In the end we cancelled the last week of our trip and flew back home early.

I watched a RUclips of someone from the USA visiting London and they had an itinerary that included the British Museum for a couple of hours in the afternoon. They were doing the dash from place to place as a result.
When I was 20 I was living about an hour train ride out of London so got up early one Saturday morning and went to the Science Museum. I spent the day there and never saw it all and had to leave when it was closing. Two hours to see any of the large museums in London is a crazily short time. I have been back to the Science Museum a number of times and am still not sure I have seen it all.

As a person who lives half the year in London and the other in San Diego/California, I have to say since start of covid not counting housing all other things are either the same or cheaper in London these days. In fact assuming I had a paid off apartment in both cities my monthly expenses would be $2,500 a month less in London. I don't own a car there, property tax I pay is around 1/5 of the amount in US and my HOA/monthly charge for my condo is 1/4 the one in US ... mobile service 1/4 the cost, broadband 1/2 the cost, groceries are cheaper as well

If peak season is necessary, be READY for it and accept it, go with the flow, and get off the beaten path. Enjoy the diversity of this place. And SLOW DOWN. One big activity a day with one evening activity is plenty and then when you're in an area and have time to spare you can just explore! There are surprises around every corner!

We did London, Clacton (to visit relatives), Paris, Eurodisney and Amsterdam last month. I would say London was my favorite. We did 10 days (an extra day due to rail strike). We made sure to do 2 big things a day and explored the rest of the time. We broke the city up into sections so we were not going back and forth. CitizenM hotel was right above Tower Hill station and was so convenient. We used some of your tips and the London Pass. Also enjoyed 4 plays which we boked in advance. Thanks to tiktok we came from Canada to find Yorkshire Burrito at Camden Market... found it and it was delicious.

I would add trying to do too much on the day you land. At least for me, coming from the East Coast (JFK or IAD), I can't sleep for more than a few minutes at a time on a plane, and I'm tired and sleep deprived when I get there. One time I went to a West End show on the night I got there, and had a wave of sleepiness, so I had to leave as I didn't want to be "that person" snoring during a performance. Also, the flip side of planning is not having any plan and wasting time.

Second day to all the tourist locations like the palace, big ben, etc. Day 3 i went to Camden (was great, felt like a food truck festival) and Brixton for a gig. I hated London initially because my father aunt (trying to be helpful) scared the daylights out of me with how bad the city was. She was sure I was going to be mugged. I find it really annoying that she gave me all the wrong information and tried to make me scared to go there. I am actually a lot more aware of how to travel safely then they actually realised. Unlike the aunt I have never been done over on my travels. Anyway I came to love London soon enough. It can be very intimidating especially if you come from a small city like I do.

Let me add to your wonderful videos that there are ways to economize but there are tradeoffs. I stayed at a Heathrow hotel which meant access to the Tube but also a long ride. It was worth it, I thought, as the hotel I stayed at a year earlier in the Bridge area more that doubled their rates. For the gentleman with the large family, Marks and Spencer may be the answer. We found baked goods and other groceries at very reasonable prices allowing us to have breakfast affordably (and many European breakfasts are overpriced and underwhelming). There are often discounts on West End tickets. Spot on about trying to do too much. Doesn't cost anything to go to St. James for the changing of the guard, walk down to Buckingham and then to the Princess Diana walk and a small, affordable cafe across from the Churchill War Rooms (worth a visit). In one of your videos you mentioned the Royal Opera House and the terrace bar. We got caught up in a rain storm and ducked inside the building only to discover the many restaurants inside so we had a very nice dinner there on our way to the theater! (They also have a more affordable cafeteria.). You can shell out a lot for tours but while we didn't tour Westminster we saw a lot when we attended a concert there. Foyles bookstore was another place to duck into and a quick lunch there. Thank you for your hard work on your videos. We found London to be quite diverse and many people quite friendly and helpful. I think you're right about trying to do too much. (One of the nice things about my last visit was having a quick lunch at the Churchill War Rooms where I was joined by a local gentleman whose company gives there people an occasional day off to "just go do something."). I also found many of the police officers to be tremendously helpful in pointing us in the right direction (and even some local tips).

As you rightly pointed out, there are so many other areas in London to see and do instead of doing the "usual rounds". I have worked and lived in London myself before I've got a job in the Midlands which is where I am now.
You know what, since you have mentioned different cultures I think it is time for you to explore different Jamaican and African food in Brixton or Peckham in one video, Indian/Pakistani food in another video probably in Southall, Chinese food in Chinatown etc...what do you think? I'm presenting you a challenge lol

I did see many of your videos about cuisines in London but I was actually more referring to going to Southall specifically to explore the range of Indian food especially street food, the culture, the shops etc on one video - it is just a suggestion. Anyways enjoy the hot weather we are having right now because as we all know by October it starts to get a bit chilly 👍👍

We're leaving for London this Friday for five days before we go to Europe and I'm so excited about it! Watching your videos as well as others has been so helpful, especially as I've never been further out of the US then Canada. LOL at your call out about Americans trying to over do it - we really do! but I've learned my lesson on that before. We're only doing the tourist stuff we're really excited about - the hop on/hop off tour bus though I know local busses are are a lot cheaper but we love them and it's an easy way to see a lot of the sites without having to get out. I really want to check out the Borough Market and we're going to do the Tower of London because that's something I'm excited about and we're staying right by it. The rest of the typical tourist stuff I'll see on the bus as I go by it. I want to see some local neighborhoods, check out a museum or two, go to the local pubs, and try Indian food as I've never had it before. Most of all I just really want to experience it. I know we're going to have a great time and I wish very happy & safe travels for all of you as well!

I just got back from a 2 week trip to London/Kettering. I would pick one main thing each day and then see where my day took me. I only did one day trip to the inner circle of Stonehenge. If you don't like crowds in the popular places go right when they open and its fairly peaceful. My favorites were Notting Hill, Stonehenge, Westminster Abbey, Neal's Yard and Soho. The museums were pretty cool too for a rainy day. Unfortunately I didn't have enough time to see south and east London. I'm obsessed with Mildred's Cafe! Best vegan food I've had! You could spend a month in London and not get to everything you want to see. I look forward to my next trip there! Next time I want to spend more time outside of London and explore the countryside. Also a word of advice use google maps not citymapper. Citymapper got me so lost!

Went to London in June and loved it. One, because we watched your videos. Second we kept our schedule open and didn’t try to fit everything in. Would have loved to have had conversations with locals but they just don’t do that. The only bad advice we received was to dress up and to not wear sneakers. Even the locals were casually dressed and wearing white gym shoes.

    • @loveandlondon
      @loveandlondon  8 месяцев назад

Re: dressing up it depends on what you're doing, where you're going and what your usual style is. And re: chatting, it also depends on where you are and your vibe, Londoners generally don't hang in the touristy areas and are quite busy so sometimes they don't want to talk to tourists. Glad you had a great time though ❤️❤️❤️

Also Jess do you have a playlist of what to do when you’ve been to London multiple times? All good advice. London is an expensive city but you can cut costs a bit in some ways. Many public museums are free except for special exhibitions (but try to avoid the popular times). Public transport is not cheap but you can save money during the day if you travel above the ceiling for the 1 day travelcard (Oyster works that out automatically). But it can actually be simpler or cheaper for a large group to order a cab for short trips. Many restaurants have 'prix fixe' menus for lunch, and special offers just before theatre shows start, because many people prefer to eat dinner or supper at the same time as the shows. You can research offers on line. Same goes for theatre or cinema tickets on quiet days. Or order sharing plates in a bar or cafe - or try an indoor food market where each of you order something from a different vendor and then you can share those. Or prepare your own picnic in a nice park one day if the weather is good.

Some good advice here, a lot of it applies to other touristy areas in Britain too, like Scotland, the South West or the Lake District. Although good weather is never reliable here, it can be nice in May and June. Sometimes less good in July and August and then often pleasant again in September and October. If asked the best time to avoid the crowds, high prices for accomodation and get good weather, I'd say probably May or September might be the best bet.

Indian, of course, but check out Persian, Caribbean, all kinds of African cuisines. Don't think of London as an English city, it is possibly the most cosmopolitan city in the world

Holland Park very posh. Notting Hill not posh and the movie was laughable as it had no black people in it. Shepherd Bush improving area. It used to be very working class. The sitcom Steptoe and Sin was set there, while The Who came from there. When I lived there for a decade and worked there from 1986 to 2010, I developed a sixth sense for trouble. For example, I noticed one block at the side of the Middlesex Hospital in central London had everyone crossing the road, then crossing back once past it. The reason? The block was the side entrance and a door in that wall was where addicts entered and left the drugs clinic. You’d not really be at risk, but only a local would know it. The obvious advice: don’t look like a tourist, don’t draw attention to yourself and your possessions, don’t do anything silly. And look right when you go to cross a road!

We were in London for less than 30 hours on July 4 and 5 and we loved it. What we did was book tickets for the Tootbus, so that way, we could see the big attractions we wanted to see and also walk around Central London. As for the weather, it was 16°C both days and it was raining the majority of the time, so it was jeans and a hoodie for me. We did get to have dinner at a pub, which was really cool, and got to ride the Tube, which wasn't that hard to do. The sun came out a couple of hours before we had to get back to St. Pancras to catch the Eurostar back to Paris to continue our two week trip there.
Next time we go, we'll spend more time exploring on our own and making a reasonable itinerary (we're Canadians from Québec, so we don't run around, we take it easy) and see more of London, even the areas where tourists don't usually go to.
I always enjoy your videos, Jess. Keep up the awesome work. As for that new camera, I'll look into that, I love my Canon Rebel T6 DSLR, but to have something more compact would be nice too. I use my T6 mainly for transit and aviation photography.
