I love the symbolism. America was introduced to The Beatles through the Ed Sullivan Show, and the entire world was introduced to the Foo Fighters through this song.
I always interpreted it as being about female cosmetics in an ironic sense. Fingernails are pretty and good, all they ever wanted was a marker (as in nail polish). Balloons (an euphemism for breasts) are pretty big, but they shouldn't fall to ground (sag), call the magic marker (the marker breast surgeons use to mark where to cut). I could be completely wrong but I like this interpretation and I think it's funny.
I absolutely love this song. Look at Taylor go. One of the best FF tracks for showcasing his insane drumming skills. Whatta guy. A man who battled with his demons for much of his career. He’s at peace now. 💓💙
First song of Foo fighters i heard back in the 90's . It was so cool Dave was coming back with a new band and Pat and that song was a great introduction to their future career . RIP Taylor
+exexalien Yes!!!! I would've been shitting myself getting to hear Foo in such an intimate setting! I did get to see them in Pittsburgh in 2012 I think it was. Jesus, it was so good. Getting to see one of your top 5 bands live is amazing. I still need to hit up an RHCP concert tho. Someday, hopefully.
Mostly open chords like Corey said, but also a barre chord 2:07 that I could see Dave using on the "this is a call..." part. Plus, a slew of power chords thrown in by Shifty, Pat and Dave, along with open and barre chords. 1:22 - 1:39 and 2:18 - 2:33.
Sadie Young I love simplicity as well as complexity, don't know why people (especially metal fans) tend to overvalue complexity, I mean I think it's not about how many techniques you use, it's about the connection you make with the listener. That's what I feel
this is a call to all my happy chileans!! por fin.. POR FIIIN! años esperándolos... :) ya quiero tener mis tickets!! espero q toquen this is a call... parte del soundtrack de mi vida =)
Memory unlocked lol: When I was 7 my mom's bf had a speed boat. When we'd hit wakes too fast, we'd go flying several feet into the air and it scared the fuck out of me. I'd curl up on the floor of the boat and sing to myself and I'd always sing this song, it was my shit.
Between the bands performance and the quality of the recording the only thing that really differentiates this from a studio album for me is some crowd noise in the background. It's so good.
Taylor's favorite foo fighters song. Rest in peace Taylor, we miss you, bud.
It’s so fun to play! Can tell Dave wrote it from a drummers perspective but, fun to play on all instruments. Yeah Taylor was great!
Don't do drugs, kids.
lol 69, Taylor was a great man though, Fly High🕊
Love this song and performance. The whole band and producers did a great job mimicing the Ed Sullivan Show w/ the Beatles. Nice touch.
I noticed that almost at once! :-) Love me some Beatles, and love me some Foo Fighters!
I love the symbolism. America was introduced to The Beatles through the Ed Sullivan Show, and the entire world was introduced to the Foo Fighters through this song.
17 years and I still have no idea what most of the lyrics in this angelic song mean
Something about fingernails and balloons having markings?
Dave has admitted that the lyrics to this song make absolutely no sense (the same goes for most, if not all, of the songs on the debut album)

The chorus is basically a callout to people he worked with in the past that was important to him.
He was being purposely vague and random it means nothing

one of the coolest foo fighters songs... :) their first album is so awesome!
his*
dave played every instrument in the recordings him self. FF was a one man band at that time
The fact that Dave Letterman loves The Foo Fighters he sure went out with a Memorable experience for all of us.
As a drummer myself everytime a drummer dies I feel like I'm losing a piece of my soul...
R.I.P Taylor Hawkins. 😭😭😭
He wanted to please his boss and keep his job. R.I.P.
@@Dreadandcircuses what?

well its letterman show, ppl dont go crazy here no matter what band is performing
because at least half the audience wasn’t there to see the Foo Fighters?
Legendary stuff right here, timeless song from 1995
Love to see the Foos playing basic barre chords and still rocking so fucking hard!!! Simplicity is key, always have been, always will be
Most of this isn't even barre chords silly. Open chords
Sadie Young i agree no one really needs to be a malmstein or a dream theater to have a good song. Simplicity

You think composing, writing, practicing, and playing that stuff is easy?
Do you even play, brugrrl?
Wow..I'm as old as the Foo Fighters, 15 years of rockin', and I only know about them for 5. Wish I was there for the beginning. Still a great band :)
