    Basil II is the leader of Byzantium in the New Frontier Pass! He is an extremely strong religion-domination civ with some of the best synergy out of any leader in the game. His unique Tagma and Dromon are both quality units and are a lot of fun to use!

    I think Basil II is the official "snowball" leader in the game. As cities get converted, your religion and your troops just get stronger and stronger...I think he is just going to be an unstoppable freight train by the mid-game. It will be interesting to see if the AI can properly leverage his attributes when Basil is an AI enemy.

      Spain its a lot better in naval maps and its playstyle its very different, but i do agree that Byzantium its fucking overpowered. I think they should lower the pressure per kill, remove the free cavalary per building and reduce the bonus for having holy cities following your religion from +3 to +2.

      Darkest Libertarian yeah but the main concept behind Spain as a civilization was religion mixed with military and it can’t do either of those things very well. Byzantium on the other hand has their abilities play into each other in the way Spain should have.

    In the Renaissance Age, Egypt kept talking sh!t about how strong my military wasn't playing Byzantium. I built several more cities, built holy sites into shrines & temples. Created a couple of theatre districts for culture. Got Chichen Itza on a HUGE rainforest plain. Built hippodromes until to 1 turn left and hit Divine Right. Got Crusade earlier and just STEAM-rolled all of her cities with two left. This Civ is super duper strong.

    The Dromon might look underwhelming compared to the rest of his kit but it shores up the one flaw you might run into when you are planning on a religious domination game with chariots into Tagma's; what if ur enemy civ spawned just across the ocean (or is super defended with mountains ect). That 2 range on it's attack is almost incomparable good in how much extra pressure that will give a naval attack vs coastal cities that would normally only be attackable with 1 or 2 ships.

    From what I heard from either Reddit or CivFanatics (can't remember), but when an Entertainment District from another Civ is converted into Byzantine's Hippodrome when you capture a city, you get the free heavy cav units. You don't get them from repairing districts, so this gives you incentive to not pillage and target cities with Entertainment Districts.

    I get the analysis here but if you watch the dev stream, they talk about pacing issues what trying to execute that strategy which I definitely ran into with my first play through yesterday.
    Went Byzantium on Diety/Highlands/Standard Map/Standard Speed. Early game went pretty well, got a +3 adjacency holy site and still had to do a project to just barely grab the last great prophet. Unlocked Monarchy with about 10 turns to spare until Renaissance, pre-built chariots to upgrade, pre-converted the first city and timed the denounce before declaring war. Captured my first city and was halfway through the second before France rolled in with Gardes.
    My take is that Byzantium is a high risk strategy on Diety where you have a narrow window and you have to do everything right with a bit of luck to execute. Some advice:
    - focus on culture early game, you need to rush to monarchy
    - save up some cash, upgrading chariots can be expensive without the 50% discount and you don’t have time to grab it before attacking
    - don’t forget about iron, need it to upgrade, I was able to trade but depends on your diplomatic situation
    - know your neighbors - like I said, having France with a very defensive unique unit was unlucky and I should’ve planned my first target better

    • @matthaeus5373
      @matthaeus5373 3 года назад

      I know this comment is late but surely instead of having gold and iron to upgrade chariots, building hippodromes was the way to go?

    Porphyrogennetos. Two words. Porphyro-gennetos. Basically born in the purple, which refers to the child of a Byzantine ruler being born while held the title of an Emperor. It was somewhat of privilege but also meant their lives were a constant preparation for taking over the rulership, as well as intrigue. Being siblings eventually meant at best ending up in a monastery - somehow - or at worse dying to some repeat assassination attempt despite having been successful at warding those off in the past. It certainly meant you had to defend your holdings even against relatives - being of same faith, rank and even blood meant little at times in the Byzantine Empire.

  • @wombat4191
    @wombat4191 3 года назад +1

    I think Byzantium has interesting and unique playstyle, but damn is everything about them so overtuned. At least it's not dumb op like Gran Colombia, I like that apart from it pretty much all the new ones have been fun and synergistic. But many are really, stupidly overtuned.
    The civ ability is a bit like Motezuma's ability, in a sense that you essentially gain combat strength by expansion. Not sure which one is stronger though. The built in religion spread ability on top of that in turn is there to ensure that the insane leader ability is pretty much always active. And as this all is so religion reliant and they possibly can't have a weakness of not reliably being able to get one, let's just throw a nice prophet bonus in there.
    The Hippodrome is just stupid. Street Carnival gets 2 Amenities, why is this straight up better with 3? Royal Navy Dockyard gives a free unit in very specific circumstances, and that is tied to the leader ability, not the district itself, but this one gives a more useful unit up to 4 times without needing to fill any circumstances. How is that balanced at all?
    I'm okay with Tagma and Dromon. They are strong but not straight up OP, the questionable usefulness of early naval units in general is what holds Dromon down, and Tagma is kind of like Llanero or Black army, except that it swaps stackability for consistency. Or it could be compared to Varu or Toa, since they essentially do the same thing in many circumstances.
    But overall, Byzantium could have been balanced without taking away the fun playstyle. Regarding abilities, maybe halve the spread from killing units? And maybe make Cavalry do 50% damage to walls, that's still way more than the 15% they would do normally. I'm actually okay with the combat strength bonus from holy cities, it is really strong but I don't feel like it's stronger than Montezuma for example. The Hippodrome should only give 2 amenities (or maybe even the normal 1, the unit spam is strong enough itself), and either give a unit only when it's costructed or only when buildings are constructed in it. Not both. Currently all of it is unreasonably strong.
    Edit: Just came up with an idea for a nice little challenge. Religious victory without any religious units. Maybe apostles for evangelizing could be allowed, and maybe some limits to conquest as well so that you don't just conquer everything except one capital.

      It’s also a term used to describe Emperors born in Red room of the palace. However Basil 2 wasn’t born there ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

    You pronounced it ok, the only mistake being the G. In this case It's pronounced more like the G in god.

    Gotta bone to pick with. Why does everyone just immediately write off the Dromon?
    Check it out. Byzantium's early religion is almost assured unless you just ignore it. The Dromon unlocks early. The two are going to be coming online around the same time. The dromon then gets +10 against units- that includes land units and the +1 range ensures that many land units will be feeling the heat (see what I did there?😜). That means lots of religious pressure from a naval unit in the ancient era before most other religions have been founded and is spread without spending your valuable faith at a point in the game when your faith generation is low. If an opponent is foolish enough to found a religion in a coastal city, declare war, deploy your dromons, convert the city and peace out. Or just look for maurading barbarians, sign open borders, and kill the barbs for them while converting the city. The same goes for those sea-based city-states. Early conversion can mean extra envoys too. And nobody serious about war wastes their time using quadriremes for city capture anyway which is the worst possible use of the unit.
    I argue that the dromon has the potential to be the most powerful opener for a coastal start and at the very least is an awesome secret weapon for building early momentum towards both a religious and a domination victory.
