      Margaret actually rang up the heads of the studio when they wouldn’t let Judy go to her prom. Judy had been so excited showing everyone off the dress she was going to wear to it. Margaret was furious when they told her that she couldn’t go.

    I love that Dorothy was apologizing for killing the witch. The most evil person in Oz, and she’s apologizing.
    That just goes to show how innocent and genuinely kind she is, and I love that about the character.

      An alternative explanation is this: She didn't realize the Winkie Guard was forced to work for the Witch. Believing they were friends of the witch, Dorothy would be afraid they would seek revenge or punishment.

    The cruelest words ever spoken in any film “The last to go will see the first three go before her, and your mangy little dog too!” She was going to torture them all to death and let Dorothy see it before she did the same to her.

      She might have ad libbed during a rehearsal, but not while filming. But as far as I'm aware, all her dialogue was in the script.

    The wicked witch is truly diabolical, ruthless, and you get a sense of dread whenever you see her. Margaret Hamilton gave a phenomenal, terrifying performance! She should’ve won an Academy Award 🖤

    How this, one of the best films of all time, was made in 1939 will still baffle me to this day.
    For a film that came out nearly 90 years ago it still has some of the best visual effects I’ve ever seen, they really do hold up and are phenomenally better than some of the garbage that is being poured out today. It just shows how much the filmmakers cared, they really don’t make films like they used to anymore

    None hold a candle to the wickedness of The Wicked Witch of the West.

      Truly. It was clear they only served her out of fear. Is that why she only armed them with those spear-halberd-type weapons, when we know a sort of musket-level of firearms technology existed in Oz? Did she fear assassination? But it is not clear she could be killed or harmed by a musket, or any mortal weapon. She may have considered those spear-things adequate for what she expected them to do.

    How ironic that Margaret Hamilton (the witch) was Judy's only friend on set. The rest of the adult actors snubbed her. She was a female & a child upstaging the guys. Tons of resentment of Judy. Margaret reached out to Judy & befriended her. She loved kids & was a teacher before acting. Margaret also noticed Judy's drug use early on and did her best to help her.

      It's time for that lie-- and so many others-- to die. Judy was the darling of the set, and everyone was enchanted by her talent, her ebullience, and her vast intelligence. Also, Judy was not using medicine in a harmful way-- and she never used "recreational" drugs in her life.

    Dorothy's best friends the Scarecrow, the Tin Woodman, and the Cowardly Lion to rescue her. Dorothy threw water to melt the Wicked Witch! Wow what a great scene, thank you!

      In the book, however, the lads were all out of commission; the Scarecrow had been torn apart and stuck in a tree, the Tin Woodman was dropped into a gorge where he was all dented up and unable to move, and the Cowardly Lion was in a cage in the Wicked Witch's courtyard. Dorothy faced and defeated the Witch all by herself!

    It's funny cuz in the books The Wicked Witch successfully snatch the Silver Shoes from Dorothy, they were silver in the books, and Dorothy got so mad that she grabbed a bucket of water, and splashed it all over the Witch, killing her in the process. Lol

    It turns out the guards didn’t even like the wicked witch of the west anyway after she melted. They were happy and relieved. I always found that part confusing because they would literally do what the witch told them to do.

      I always figured that either she had cast a spell on them to force them into her service or they were serving her out of fear, not loyalty. In the case of it being a spell, the spell likely broke upon her death, and in either scenario, they were glad to see her die, seeing as that meant they were rid of her and no longer had to do her bidding.

      As a kid, it always felt like the guards were suddenly good after her death. The movie certainly would have benefited from explaining that they were enslaved, as the book made that very clear.

    I love how casual they show that while the witch is talking, the scarecrow is constantly thinking, using his brain to get them out of there like when he uses the tinman to cut the ceiling light.

      In the book it was also an accident, sort of. The Wicked Witch had managed to grab one of the silver shoes and put it on, and in a rage, Dorothy doused her with the bucket she'd been using to mop the floor. She didn't know what would happen next, and she certainly never expected that to be the end of the old crone. And as there was nobody else in the kitchen except Toto, Dorothy didn't have to apologize to anyone. 🙂

    In the book, Dorothy became angry with the witch because she was able to get one of the magic slippers from her. When she refused to give it back Dorothy, in a fit of rage, grabbed a bucket of water and threw it at the witch.

      Not at all crazy; this was over eighty years ago, and apart from Judy Garland, they were all over thirty. As for Judy, if she was alive today, she'd be 102. Her stand-in, Caren Marsh Doll, turned 105 earlier this month!

Read up on how she died if you like, But I bielive it was due to the genaral audience complaining that Judy was too fat, which lead to her overdosing (I could be completely wrong, But I think that's what happened)

      No moviegoers said anything against her build. Her accidental overdose of barbiturates came three decades after the movie and was related to personal issues rather than professional ones. You see, she did a lot more in her life than just make _The Wizard of Oz._

      Presumably nobody in Oz knew the witches weakness as Dorthy was given the task to slay her when if they had known her weakness was water the threat would have been dealt with before her arrival

    So, about the hourglass - the witch said "that's how much longer you've got to be alive." Did that mean Dorothy would drop dead when the sand runs out? Or that it would take the witch that long to organize her "troops" to surround her? Except Dorothy seems to be under the impression that if she gets out of that specific room before the sand runs out (hurry! The hourglass is almost empty!) she'll live (and she does.) Also why can't she just flip it over? Is it enchanted? Prob just movie logic.

      Only the witch knew these things, and with no scene in the film giving us any more information those questions are unanswerable. This doesn’t mean that such questions aren’t interesting, and it can be fruitful to speculate on them. In fact, speculating on what we don’t know is essential. But the witch took whatever she knew to her watery grave.

      When the hourglass ran out, the witch was going to return and kill Dorothy. Turning over the hourglass wouldn't affect the time before the witch returns. The witch needed time to come up with the right spell to kill Dorothy and get the silver slippers, without destroying the magic.

    You can see Tin Man's initial chops are hitting to far up on the door. Probably in the uncut theater version Scarecrow probably told Tin Man "Chop at the area where the lock is!!! If we knock out the lock the door it will open without any resistance. We don't have to knock down entire door!!!

    I usually prefer either a conical chase or a physical confrontation between the hero and the villain as my kind of climax. But it’s the work of art that matters in this case. Thanks to a certain musical, I can’t look at the Witch’s melting from the same preteen perspective!

      In the book, the Wicked Witch actually kept a beautiful castle, not the gloomy fortress we see in the movie. She made a slave of Dorothy, ordering her to wash the dishes and scrub the floors. She may have been evil, but she understood that her slaves needed water for drinking, cooking and cleaning. Dorothy even had a nightly bath!
