In the books, Madame Morrible is described as having very obvious fish like qualities and characteristics. When she's first seen walking into the courtyard at Shiz, her costuming gives her the silhouette of a fish "walking" on it's tail. Absolutely love the costumer for that!
Same - when they appeared, I immediately smiled, clasped my hands together, and leaned over to my friend and said, "I am SO GLAD I didn't know they were in it!"
Saw the movie today and I LOVE that they managed to keep two certain cameos as a secret for so long! I also started going, “Pooooooppieeeeeees” during that scene…and I also hummed Elmira Gultch’s theme when the bikes showed up xD
I heard musical themes from the Wizard of Oz in the orchestra, Ding Dong the Witch is dead during Good News, I heard Follow the Yellow Brick Road, and Somewhere over the Rainbow… I loved that
I LOVE the fact that during Defying Gravity, she struggled to stay afloat and almost fell to the ground! It shows consistency, since it’s her newfound control of her powers and it looks a bit odd that she’s an expert of it already.
Also, on the balloon contraption that delivered Elphaba's invitation, on either side of the walrus it said "OM" and "NE", a nod to the Wizard's origins in Omaha, Nebraska.
SPOLERS!!!! IN MY COMMENT FOR ANYONEEEEE WHO CARES! That but another scene is really devastating to me. When Glinda is JUST about to go with Elphaba. Imagine what they would've done for Oz together. THEY WERE SO CLOSE!!!!
I think this is an example of a good Part 1 because while it definitely ends with a cliffhanger, it's still a movie that managed to stand on it's own in building it's conflict with an extended climax on Defying Gravity that worked so well
Yeah I was really sad that it would be 2 parts but remembering my feelings from the times I saw the musical, ending on Defying Gravuty leaves you wanting more. Just sucks waiting a year
It goes along with the broadway show end of act 1. It makes sense, not just from a money standpoint (they can make more) but from a character development standpoint. I love to see more about the characters, specially the animals, so it gives more depth and generates more empathy in the characters. In the broadway show everything passes fast and the sequences are one right after the other so you blink and you miss it.

idk if anyone else noticed how Madame Mortible used an umbrella to cover elphaba like if she knew if she gets wet she will “melt” I thought that was a glimpse into the future
Big spoiler for part 2- at the very beginning after the melting scene and the flying monkeys are flying away, under the castle on a bridge there is a horse (most likely fiyero’s horse)running away with someone wearing a cloak riding it… if you know u know…🧙
I CAUGHT THAT TOO!!! brilliant!! Thank you. I caught so much other stuff too. They did SO good with so many Easter eggs. I probably counted 50-100. Insane.
Thank you for bringing this one up. I caught it on my second viewing and almost dropped my drink. Like, how scandalocious but also genius. Very few people seem to notice, even though it stares us in the face for at least a full 3 seconds.
At the end of "The Wizard and I", Elphaba runs outside of Shiz and stands on a cliff. Beyond her are the Unpassable deserts that separate Oz from the rest of the world. The wizard uses his balloon to cross them, while Dorothy loses her slippers in them at some point when she travels back home at the end of Baum's first book. This is something discussed in detail in Baum's books, but only mentioned in passing during the 1939 movie and the musical. I loved seeing them in person.
In the film Return to Oz she briefly has to traverse it. There was also a professor by the name of Mombi at Shiz. Another nod to Return to Oz(film), and the books it was based on.
Return to Oz is based on The Magical Land of Oz and Ozma of Oz. There is a witch called Mombi in Magical land, but she's gone by Ozma of Oz where Langwidere removes her heads.
Honestly, I knew coming from a mile away that Stephen Schwartz, Idina Menzel, and Kristin Chenoweth will absolutely make a cameo (they wouldn't missed an opportunity to do it as they are extremely supportive of the movie) but being part of "One Short Day" musical number was not something I expected and I was the only one in a crowded IMAX theater that was giggling like a kid as they showed up 😅
I gasped the loudest gasp🤭 I melted when Idina and Kristin stood next to Cynthia and Ariana and how they caressed their faces or gave a delicate touch. As if in that moment it was told to all of us that they were passing on the torch for a new generation of ICONIC wicked sisters🥹
I mean that FOR GOOD background music had me wailing in buckets of tears already!!! I rewatched it again just to listen to those FOR GOOD notes woven in the background!
I love how the narrator is like “ her three friends play a key role even though you may not recognize them and we’re not gonna tell you” and then “a lion cub, who may or may not grow up to be cowardly” 😂😂😂
@@L_o_c_a_l_G_u_y I mean, that's not really a spoiler... if Elphaba is the Witch of the West, that makes Nessarose the Witch of the East, and we all know what happened to her since the book came out in 1900
@elene.verley oh. Yeah. In the film she says she's her sister. Ha! Never thought of that. It's just movie lore not tied to the book, so I guess I never thought of it that way. 🤦🏻
Does this count? I noticed how the beginning is quite dark announcing the wicked witch was dead. Then it moves to the kids running to munchkinland in colour. I thought that was paying tribute going from black and white to technicolour in the original film 🤷♀️
10:09 Chills schmills! The transition noted in "Then it moves to the kids running to Munchkinland in color" recalls an important moment in cinematic history: Dorothy opening a "black and white" door into a Technicolor Munchkinland! True it wasn't Dorothy or even Elphaba opening the door, but to me that was the biggest Easter egg.
I noticed a few nods to the original Oz books that the average person wouldn't notice unless you've read the books. Most were mentioned in this video, I noticed a few more very subtle references. 1, during Wizard and I, Elphaba runs thru a field and sees a desert. That is the desert that surrounds Oz. 2, They showed the people of Oz as described in the books. The munchkins, winkies, and quadlings. I didn't notice any porcelain people. 3, Lions and Tigers and bears make an appearance. 4, the wooden horse in the background before Defying Gravity. The wooden horse debuts in Ozma of Oz and is part of the story to find the missing princess that Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth were singing about. The missing powers they were talking about is Princess Ozma. The 15 original Oz books are still awesome reads today if you want to understand these references yourself.
I've seen this 2x (already) and this one really stood out to me but hard to find online. In the intro scene into Shiz and the introduction of Miss Coddle there is the start of the build up feud between Elphaba, Miss Coddle and Nessarose in which Miss Coddle states, "Well, isn't this an awkward Gulch" (or something to that nature) but I definitely caught the Gulch word and the association to the Gayle family neighbor Miss Gulch in the MGM Wizard of Oz.
What I spotted warning spoilers 1. Dorothy,Tin man,Cowardly Lion and the scarecrow(Fiyero's other form)can be seen in the beginning of the film. I think Ariana Grande's dog Toulese makes a cameo too. 2. Idina Menzel and Kirstin Chenworth made a cameo near the end of the film. 3. The map sorta resembles the map from Harry Potter and the Prisoner Of Azkaban. 4. Elphaba's true father's identity can be seen in the opening of the film (the wizard Oscar Diggs). 5. Dorothy's Og slippers can be seen as well as her red shoes.
During the opening scene with the song “No One Mourns The Wicked” I heard a little bit of the instrumental to “Ding Dong The Witch is Dead” as the kids were running through the field ringing the bell announcing the death of the wicked witch of the west and the title card is in the same font as the title card in the 1939 MGM movie musical. I also noticed the impassable desert during the song “The Wizard And I” which in Return To Oz is called the deadly desert and the wheelers fall into the desert and some of them fall in and get turned to sand
When Elphaba’s spell gives the monkeys wings, as she tries to escape and looks through the window, the feathers falling from the sky as the monkeys fly seem to nod to the snow falling on the poppy field scene in The Wizard of Oz.
I saw the original Broadway cast in the San Francisco test run of Wicked in 2003, the summer before it opened on Broadway, so I was thrilled to see Kristin Chenoweth and Idina Menzel's cameos. BTW, for those who saw the original Broadway run, Joel Grey was brought in to play the Wizard after the test run when the original actor seemed weak in the role.
Oooooo!!! I saw the SF production in 2003 also! One element that was in the stage play (and played HEAVILY in the Wicked books...and missing from this movie version was the Time Dragon.
I had wondered if the fact Fiyero’s horse was blue as a nod to the blue marks he was described as having in the Wicked novel - so not only is it a horse of a different color it’s also a blue horse for Fiyero.
I not sure if this qualifies as an Easter Egg, but throughout the film ,especially at Shiz and in the Emerald City there are green plants with pink flowers everywhere
Have watched in Imax, 3D, and standard (2d) and they are all "great" but Imax was the "swankiest". I was in tears at the Ozdust Ballroom when the two dance. Forgiveness and redemption are powerful story arcs and Jon Chu did it without either of them (Glinda and Elphaba) saying a word. He is Definity up for best director.
@@MzElaineMarie I sat in the second row and at times it felt as if I was in the movie which during the monkey transformation and the ending stairwell fire scene were a little terrifying. at the beginning one of the people in shiz said it might be a 'gulch' to fit elphaba in to a room. gulch as in miss gulch who is the wicked witch in the wizard of oz!!!
I saw the film yesterday and cried and gave it a 10/10❤love this play so much❤saw it on broadway 5 yrs ago so I was excited for this movie😊 I noticed that after the movie being in 2 parts that they’re doing it like the broadway show where act 1 ends with defying gravity and then it’s a intermission until act 2😭plus I also noticed that the trailer only showed scenes and stuff from act 1 and not act 2 so I’m assuming that when act 2 is released then the trailer would show scenes from that part of the story🤷🏽♀️
I saw this movie twice, second viewing in IMAX. I can tell you that the movie is a much improvement viewing after I saw it second time and I absolutely didn't feel the long runtime meaning that the pacing was actually much better than I thought first time around. I only check my watch once in the second viewing and was shocked to know that the movie was already 2 hours in. I guess it's because I slowly get used by the song with hearing the soundtrack before watching the movie second time, it gets so much better
@@800Ms-k6n The critics saying the runtime is long need to STFU because after the film ended, it did NOT feel like over 2 and a half hours had passed, maybe just over 2
Nobody is gonna see this comment but I wanna share: During the movie, in the popular scene, when she looks at herself in the mirror and tosses her hair, a kid stood up and yelled “AVERAGE BLONDE” and then sat down again lmfao
This is exactly how a movie musical adaptation should be done. Not going to lie for the 40th anniversary of The Phantom of the Opera I say this director should make a new movie adaptation of Phantom or its sequel Love Never Dies. I think the visuals achieved would translate well to Andrew Lloyd Webber's work with the masked man.
@@L_o_c_a_l_G_u_yNo but I enjoyed it. Now I will say Til I hear you sing SHOULD be at the end for phantom mourning Christine instead of the beginning. Otherwise I enjoyed it very much.

In in one shot in Defying Gravity I believe Elphabas cloak was shaped in the way you would have seen it in the stage version. I was half expecting Galindas bubble to glitch, as I remember hearing about a live performance where Galinda was stuck in the air in the bubble for some of the performance.
I just watched it today! I loved it! I also noticed the Ruby Slippers that was obvious so was seeing Dorothy. Also it was annoying to keep hearing For Good. Seeing the originals made me jump in joy!
The side profile of Elphaba scene right after Glinda puts on her long cape. I'd like to believe it was a nod (pay respect?) to the OG cover of the book.
I knew that was For Good playing in the background! That is my favorite song of the musical and to hear the instrumental version of it during the break of my second favorite song, Dancing Through Life, and my ninth favorite song, Popular, is the life! EEP! :) When I eagerly watched that part when Glinda and Elphaba danced together the way that they did and heard the background music. I was like in my head, "Okay, that music sounds awfully familiar. What song could it be from the musical?" Then I gasped in my head, "Oh my gosh! It's For Good!" Sadly, I may have to patiently wait for, For Good, to play out fully in another year. But, hey, hearing my favorite song actually be foreshadowed in the background by its instrumental version that perfectly works too! EEP! :)
Wicked is trending. Can we just emphasise on the Dorothy's Red Shoes. I can imagine a new shoe trend here. Let's put business ahead of the game.. who wants Dorothy's Red Shoes!?!
Regarding the Ruby Slippers, _Wicked_ is actually the first film in the 84 years since _The Wizard of Oz_ debuted to have the full involvement of the IP owner, allowing more imagery from the 1939 classic to be referenced (Dorothy and her friends are instantly recognizable as they appeared in the original film). It's clear, however, that the shoes will retain their appearance as silver jeweled shoes with tornado-inspired heels.
In the Wizard and I, when Elphaba is looking over the fields, you can see a rainbow with bluebirds flying over which is a reference to Over the Rainbow
I’m so curious to know how msmojo got all this footage!!!!! Do studios give select creators access to the entire digital film to pull clips from?? I feel like most of this video contains clips I never saw in other promos. Seriously hoping someone answers this, it’s not hypothetical I’m dying to know!
I did notice the complete lack of the Clock of the Time Dragon, which plays heavily in the Wicked books. Perhaps it will be in Part 2? Seems like a pretty important thing in the story to leave out.

At last! A Ms. Mojo video that pronounces L. Frank Baum's last name CORRECTLY!!!
Just got back. I had so much fun watching this!
I saw the film yesterday and cried and gave it a 10/10❤love this play so much❤saw it on broadway 5 yrs ago so I was excited for this movie😊
I noticed that after the movie being in 2 parts that they’re doing it like the broadway show where act 1 ends with defying gravity and then it’s a intermission until act 2😭plus I also noticed that the trailer only showed scenes and stuff from act 1 and not act 2 so I’m assuming that when act 2 is released then the trailer would show scenes from that part of the story🤷🏽♀️
@@800Ms-k6n The critics saying the runtime is long need to STFU because after the film ended, it did NOT feel like over 2 and a half hours had passed, maybe just over 2
Well, I guess this means I need to watch it again and try to catch all the references.
Nobody is gonna see this comment but I wanna share:
During the movie, in the popular scene, when she looks at herself in the mirror and tosses her hair, a kid stood up and yelled “AVERAGE BLONDE” and then sat down again lmfao
I can’t wait for the next movie to where they’ll sing “For Good”
New fan… MOVIE WAS AMAZING BTW 🥳🥳 I’m definitely going to see it again “to be Pop youuuu lerrr, lar”
Have you seen Lindsay Ellis's video essay on Love Never Dies?
@@L_o_c_a_l_G_u_yNo but I enjoyed it. Now I will say Til I hear you sing SHOULD be at the end for phantom mourning Christine instead of the beginning. Otherwise I enjoyed it very much.

I’m not sure but I think at the end of the Wizard and I when Elphaba runs to the edge of the cliff, I believe we get a glimpse of the Deadly Desert.
The cameos was so surprising. I looking forward to part 2. I liked the titles were in the designed like wizard of oz.
Coddle uses gulch instead of glitch! Loved that!!!!
that for good background music got me!! some theater goers doesn't know that song but if you're a wicked fan you'll gonna cry
It must have been subliminal, because I definitely cried during that scene but didn’t consciously think that it was For Good!!!
I loved this movie! 😺💙🐾 The social commentary and the messages sent to the audience is so powerful! Unlimited 🍻 Cheers
Princess Mombi from Return to Oz is referenced as ‘Professor Mombi’ just before we meet Madame Morrible for the first time.
Hey, For Good was not that annoying. I didn't think that they overdid it. :(
The side profile of Elphaba scene right after Glinda puts on her long cape.
EEP! :)
When I eagerly watched that part when Glinda and Elphaba danced together the way that they did and heard the background music.
I was like in my head,
"Okay, that music sounds awfully familiar. What song could it be from the musical?"
Then I gasped in my head,
"Oh my gosh! It's For Good!"
Sadly, I may have to patiently wait for, For Good, to play out fully in another year.
But, hey, hearing my favorite song actually be foreshadowed in the background by its instrumental version that perfectly works too! EEP! :)
Stephen Schwartz cameo I think I was the only one hyped in my theatre
I googled it to make sure it was him right after the song. Great cameo!
Oh My God, Ethan Slater. I absolutely love him in the SpongeBob Musical
Same here. I love Ethan Slater I feel like he portrayed Boq perfectly just as he did an amazing job bringing SpongeBob to life as well.
I loved the movie. Sometimes, a movie adaptation of stage play falls short (e.g. A Chorus Line, The Wiz), but not this one.
Brought me to literal tears. Oh my dear Elphaba ❤️
Fyero’s horse talking was also in the books
1:21 I’m a definite fan of the show!
…Silhouettes?
Wicked is trending. Can we just emphasise on the Dorothy's Red Shoes. I can imagine a new shoe trend here. Let's put business ahead of the game.. who wants Dorothy's Red Shoes!?!
I love how she knocks the red shoes together three times.
Also the title of the film at the beginning is written in the cursive style of the 1939 Wizard of Oz.(as well as to be continued)
Breaking the glass is a running theme
IM GOING TO WATCH THE MOVIE TO DAY!!!
The title! Wicked is written in the Wizard of Oz font
Ok, Now I want to see the movie. All because of this video 😊
@@kandymich4861 ITS SO GOOD, SO SEE IT ASAP…the bigger the screen the better IMO
I mean, the Wizard of Oz font for the Wicked title card is also right there…
Saw that movie today, loved it
Regarding the Ruby Slippers, _Wicked_ is actually the first film in the 84 years since _The Wizard of Oz_ debuted to have the full involvement of the IP owner, allowing more imagery from the 1939 classic to be referenced (Dorothy and her friends are instantly recognizable as they appeared in the original film). It's clear, however, that the shoes will retain their appearance as silver jeweled shoes with tornado-inspired heels.
In the Wizard and I, when Elphaba is looking over the fields, you can see a rainbow with bluebirds flying over which is a reference to Over the Rainbow
I can’t wait for part 2 💚💖
Elphie also jams the door with Oz’s old elixir cart, also always sad to see Fiyero’s diamond skin left out
Love the movie will watch it again
Nessarose's socks. Look close, and if you didn't already know who she is, the socks will tell you.
I’m so curious to know how msmojo got all this footage!!!!! Do studios give select creators access to the entire digital film to pull clips from?? I feel like most of this video contains clips I never saw in other promos. Seriously hoping someone answers this, it’s not hypothetical I’m dying to know!
Wondered the same thing!
It's all clips from trailers before release.
I did notice the complete lack of the Clock of the Time Dragon, which plays heavily in the Wicked books. Perhaps it will be in Part 2? Seems like a pretty important thing in the story to leave out.
I loved this movie so much can’t wait for part2
The director of the original broadway show the man with the lion in the cage.
The title font!!!
I'm so excited to see it come Tuesday ❤
