    The details and nods to both the stage show and the Wizard of Oz are just insane.

      I also like how they returned Glinda's "Good Witch" dress back to pink. Green and pink neutralize each other, and it keeps to think to have her dress be pink, like the Wizard of Oz movie, rather than blue, like the stage show.

    I think it was also worth noting that during Idina and Kristin's segment in One Short Day, Kristin also did a reference of her wand/light stick not working. It's just like how Galinda was when she first started using her training wand in Popular.

    My favourite fact (not included in this video) is that at the very beginning, literal seconds into the film, when the Universal sequence is happening you can hear Elphaba’s ‘fate’. Guards marching, screaming AND the bucket of water being thrown!!!!! It’s 10/10 🤌🤌🤌🤌 gives me full body chills every single time

  • @MrIndydark
    @MrIndydark 2 месяца назад +64

    My understanding why Cynthia's battle cry is different than Elphaba's on stage is due to the existing tradition that all cries are the actress's choice to make it their own

    • @theultimateusukfan
      @theultimateusukfan 2 месяца назад +14

      i heard that the actresses playing elphaba on stage are given a select few number of options for the runs in the songs. some stick to the original, where some pick the alternate run notes. i thought the movie version was special because the movie versions of the songs, the singers were all able to do any kind of run they wanted to add flair and new emotion,, something the stage version isn't allowed to do due to strict option of runs.

    • @rubyblue444
      @rubyblue444 2 месяца назад +16

      Actually, Cynthia Erivo DID in fact originally do the war cry exactly as written, the way Idina does it, because she has so much love and respect for Idina. It was Schwartz, the musical director, who wanted Cynthia to make it her own. After trying out a few different options she came up with, it ended up ultimately being the one we all know her for now. 😊

    I have just returned home from this visually stunning and spectacular experience and I am ready to go again! OMG!!! BEST movie I have seen in a long time. Cynthia is a powerhouse performer and she OWNS this role! Her voice is incredible and her emotional depth make her character both sympathetic and fierce. I get the feeling Ariana is playing herself but there is no denying her own impressive vocal range that harmonizes with Cynthia's so beautifully. The sets are magical, lush and expansive, the costumes were gorgeous, the choreography, the songs all brilliant - Defying Gravity gave me chills and made me cry it is SOOOOOOOOOOO extraordinary! Loved, loved, loved it and cannot wait for Part 2!!!

      You know they have it streaming to rent or buy on Amazon? BEST investment I ever made. I LOVE THIS MOVIE. It totally blew all of my high expectations out of the water. It was worth waiting half a lifetime to see. If they don't win ALL the awards at the Oscars AND the Golden Globes and redefine the musical movie genre the way Lord of the Rings redefined fantasy, then the people judging have NO taste in what is an excellent and worthy film anymore. This movie was a love story to Wicked the musical, the Wizard of Oz and Elphaba and Glinda specifically. It was EPIC and I am really sad that I have to wait a whole year to see what happens next with them.

    There’s one more fact that I noticed! I’m not sure if anyone has reported, mentioned, or confirmed it, but I noticed when Kristin Chenoweth and Idina Menzel made their cameo, Kristin was trying to get her wand to work because the light wasn’t turning on and she kinda gave up. I think it’s a nod to her in popular when she tries to turn the frock into a ballgown, but the wand wasn’t working.

    • @TherealRNOwwfpooh
      @TherealRNOwwfpooh 2 месяца назад +3

      Also, when Idina interacts with Cynthia by adjusting her hat and Kristin interacts with Ariana by playfully cutting off her riff, it was basically a torch pass from the OBC to the film versions of Elphie and Glinda. Likewise, the two _Wicked_ alumni rise & lower from a trap door in the stage, which lampshades something pivotal in part 2.
      In addition, the whole "OZ of Tomorrow" model, Jeff Goldblum's Wizard pretending to fly like a pixie & his whole spiel about being a "Sentimental Man" (And yes, viewers should already know by now that The Wizard is Elphie's biological dad [if you paid attention to the affair Melena Thropp had with the circus showman once her Munchkinland governor & roaming preacher husband Frexspar left his promiscuous wife alone during _No One Mourns The Wicked_ before Elphie was even born, never mind Elphie keeping the green vial that led to her green skin as a memento of her mother when Glinda snatches it from Elphie shortly before the _Popular_ makeover sequence occurs, not to mention the fact that, in the original Baum book, instead of giving him a bronze medal like he does in the 1939 MGM film, the titular carnival Humbug gave The Cowardly Lion the green vial & told him to drink its leftover contents, claiming the stuff inside to be "liquid courage", another nickname for booze/alcohol, which would thereby make The Cowardly Lion less of a fraidy cat], although this unsurprising twist won't be made overtly explicit until part 2 [taking place at a point when Glinda finally has the backbone to call The Wizard out for callously sending the core _Wizard of OZ_ quintet to basically murder his own illegitimate biological daughter, subsequently forcing the weak phony to depart OZ in shame OR, as Frank Morgan's hapless bumbling version of the character put it in the 1939 MGM film, "Retaining my balloon in the advent of a quick getaway", a getaway that, once the hot air balloon is obviously repaired, the not-so _Wonderful_ Wizard would most certainly need to heed now more than ever given the fact that he OZian population will discover that he was a deceptive fraud hiding behind his mascarade of cheap magician tricks to maintain his position as political figurehead, who was himself very much afraid of the powerful weather-based powers genuinely held by Madame Morrible as The Emerald City's press secretary/his regime's personal advisor/Dean of Sorcery Studies at Shiz University, as well as Elphie's own innate ability to actually read the Grimmorie & even utilize spells from its accursed pages, because Elphie herself is a byproduct of both our real human world -- from whence The Wizard under his real name of Oscar Diggs & displaced Kansas farm girl Dorothy Gale both originally come from -- and the fantasy realm of OZ due to the fact that The Wizard is Elphie's biological father, however Elphie & her holier than thou crippled/disabled half-sister Nessarose share the same biological mother, namely Frex's non-commital wife Melena]) IS intentionally referencing Walt Disney, which is fitting, because it had been Walt Disney's animated adaptation of _Snow White_ from 1938 that inspired the 1939 MGM _Wizard of OZ_ film (alongside the source material that was the original L. Frank Baum novel written in 1900, of course), which in turn inspired Gregory Mcguire's 1995 novel, which begot the 2003 _Wicked_ musical & now, the two-part film adaptation.
      In further continued parallels to Walt Disney, The Wizard's longing to be a father echoes how Walt Disney's on-screen personality portrayed him like a loving kind uncle (hence "Uncle Walt") to his audience. Amd let's we not forget that the "OZ of Tomorrow" model is a two-fold nod to both Walt Disney's unrealized, conceptual Experimental Prototype Community Of Tomorrow (because the E.P.C.O.T we ended up with in Walt Disney World is nowhere near the pristine, live-in utopia of an almost Jewels Verne-esque version of the future that Walt Disney had initially envisioned), along with original OZ creator L. Frank Baum's own little slice of heaven on Earth that he, rather fittingly, referred to as OZcot.
      Silmilarly, The Wizard ducking behind the curtain & pretending to fly like a pixie was similar to how Walt Disney utilized Peter Pan's fairy sidekick Tinkerbelle as both a character representative effectively bookending his _Disneyland_ / _The Wonderful World of Color_ / _Walt Disney Presents_ anthology TV series (which covered all manner of subjects, nut also acted as a behind-the-scenes look at the ongoing development of the stateside Disney theme parks) as well as using Tink's pixie dust to shuffle the viewing gaudience (who are basically "behind the camera") from one thing to another whenever Walt Disney deemed it necessary.
      Another fun factoid is the fact that the first seven bars of the overarching "Unlimited" tune that plays throughout the _Wicked_ film is basically just a rejiggered version of the iconic melodic intro to "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" (which Stephen Schwartz has taken great delight in pointing out [by genuinely playing it himself on piano, beginning with the "Unlimited" tune from _Wicked_ before transitioning the same 7 bars directly into the _Somewhere Over the Rainbow_ melodic intro]).

    Loved the movie and loved Defying gravity…except for how disjointed it was. I felt like they kept breaking it up and it made its impact slightly less. In my personal opinion of course

      I agree that it feels weird if you're familiar with the pace of the live musical, but I read they did that because the stage show has to move at a breakneck speed to get the entire story in under 3 hours. Chu is letting the film breathe and realized that they couldn't speed through "Defying Gravity" in six minutes since "intermission" for this movie would be a year at minimum and they needed to make it feel like more of an ending than an typical act one finale where the audience knows there's more after the break. I actually really liked that they added the scene of Elphaba just straight falling at first before she figures it out.

      I love the dramatic pause before she sings the final note. It had more of an impact than the Broadway version.
