Excellent interview. I lived in Jamaica and as a teacher there, classism and colourism were rife. What made it worse was that hate was the norm. Too many lost souls in Jamaica. Even parents hate their own children based on the shade of their skin. I can only pity those lost souls because once it gets into their subconscious minds it is almost impossible to change and that is why Ethics and Values must be taught as a very important subject in Jamaica.

I always thought Jamaica was more classist than racist. I coming from a black American perspective ( my parents are Jamaican). It should be illegal to discriminate against someone’s home address.
In England they have grammar schools where tests are done for children at junior High level to determine which High school they go to. The clever children go to grammar school and usually have the top jobs regardless of their background.

I think a lot of parents also suffer from self hate themselves , and it's a negative impact of colonialism, not necessarily a conscious decision. It still doesn't remove the responsibility from us to emancipate our minds from mental slavery. I also think the government should implement methods to combat the issue.
