The melody being played just before “Mr. Lincoln’s” appearance on the stage is a Civil War song entitled “ Just Before The Battle Mother”. Mr. Lincoln would most certainly have known it.
I feel this is the best performance of an actor doing Lincoln that I have seen, and I have seen most of them that have been done. There are always going to be things that we don’t agree with from an actor who is portraying such a well known, iconic figure, but this is my favorite, followed by Hollbrook
Roy was superb as Charles Dickens in Dickens of London, which ran on Masterpiece Theater. (Gene Foad played the author in younger years.) Roy died in 2017.
*"When Mr. Dotrice turns during his curtain calls and bows to the empty box where the President once sat, the sense of historical continuity and national loss is profoundly felt."*
Damn! I've just finished watching this and the actor deserves an oscar. Carrying a show like this all on his own with such heavy material is amazing. Did this actor do any TV/movie work?
I haven't seen this since it first aired back in 1978, I believe. It's even more powerful today. Thank you for sharing this.
An amazing character actor. His narration of The Game of Thrones is unparalleled. He is wonderful here as well.
This is phenomenal. I only wish there was a better copy of it. Thanks so much for posting it.

Yes.
Beauty and The Beast tv show with Linda Hamilton, and much more besides.
Yes indeed. Dickens of London, which ran on Masterpiece Theater. Pick it up.
Great to see this again. Though it seems that some people don't have a long enough attention span to watch it.
Thanks for this! I've been searching for ages!
I'm glad they got Lincoln's voice right instead of that deep booming kind other programs seem to misinterpret.
Ryan Hartel, I so appreciated you sharing this most insightful historical and factually based video clip of President Lincoln's personal diaries!
Lincoln's voice was reportedly high-pitched.
Good stuff. Equal to Raymond Massey, Abe Lincoln In Illinois,1940... Henry Fonda, Young Mr. Lincoln, 1939... Daniel Day-Lewis, Lincoln, 2012.
This is acting . Great , wonderful . When was this made. Performed ? Most of today's actors should gain experience on the stage .long experience.
I believe that it was broadcast in 1981.
