Rather than checking in my walking poles, I have an older style pack, a top loader, with a divider. I zip out the divider and slide my poles down the inside of the pack. Problem solved.
It doesn't matter. They will confiscate them in Santiago or Madrid or any Spanish airport on your way home, almost every time. Now and then someone slips through, but not often.
Thanks Annie. Regarding the walking stick or trekking poles you might buy on the Camino, where can one donate them at the end? Where to take them where they would make good use of them if you do not want to bring them back to the USA? I have seen videos of people abandoning gear, that is not what I mean to do.
