John Mackey is an entrepreneur and the co-founder and visionary of Whole Foods Market. In his 44 years of service as CEO, the natural and organic grocer grew from a single store in Austin, Texas, to 540 stores in the U.S., U.K. and Canada, with annual sales exceeding $22 billion. Mackey co-founded the Conscious Capitalism Movement (www.consciouscapitalism.org/) and co-authored a New York Times and Wall Street Journal best-selling book titled “Conscious Capitalism: Liberating the Heroic Spirit of Business” and follow up, “Conscious Leadership: Elevating Humanity through Business.” He is also the co-author of “The Whole Foods Diet: The Lifesaving Plan for Health and Longevity” and “The Whole Foods Cookbook: 120 Delicious and Healthy Plant-Centered Recipes.” His new book, “The Whole Story: Adventures in Love, Life, and Capitalism,” was published in May 2024. I worked at WF from 2000-2004. I met John during that time and I loved WF. He could not be more correct above LOVE is the answer.....Thank you so much for Whole Foods....It certainly supports my lifestyle......in offering healthy organic foods.
Absolutely fabulous interview. I am Australian and my partner is Canadian, so my first experience of Wholefoods was in Vancouver back in 2005. I couldn’t believe it when I first walked into the store ( my eyes boggled!!), as Australia has very small health food stores even today. I spent many months in their summer for some years in Vancouver, and I must admit my favourite thing to do was to not only shop in Wholeffods but I would spend hours in there browsing thru the isles and eating delicious foods and taste testing the samples😊

Team member here! I Just finished the audio book. John Mackey, I'm so sorry I'm late to the party--both the video and the WFM. I love Whole Foods and appreciate what you've created. I wish I could've been there in the early days. I thought it was hysterical when Allen Ginsberg came to the cafe and you guys agonised about whether or not to ask him to stop smoking. There's so much good stuff in the book. like that. It was sad how machiavellian things got later on. But there's still so much good going on within WFM. Thanks, God bless.

Imagine if Wholefoods refuse to sell any fatty foods that cause insulin resistance it probably wouldn’t have made a lot of money. That’s the problem a low-fat diet isn’t what everyone that sick is doing, Carbs FTW!! 💪💪💪

Restaurants in general have a hard time for so many reasons--inflation, etc. Vegan restaurants are not immune to these general pressures; there may be additional pressures for restauranteurs in California, which may be why so many vegan (and many other) restaurants have shuttered there. There are no guarantees that those formerly vegan restaurants who have decided to add meat to the menu will be successful, as they may be distrusted by people on all sides (and have increased food acquisition, handling, and storage costs).
