In 2009, John Mackey, the then-CEO of Whole Foods Market, gave Rip Esselstyn the shot of a lifetime to showcase Engine 2 products and tour around Whole Foods Market stores as a healthy eating ambassador extolling the virtues of a whole foods, plant-based diet.
This opportunity and vision truly put PLANTSTRONG on the trajectory that exists today and has allowed Rip to live out his life’s purpose.
Today, Rip speaks with John about his new book, The Whole Story - Adventures in Love, Life and Capitalism. Mackey describes it as a gift to past, present, and future employees of Whole Foods. It’s also a gift to entrepreneurs and dreamers who dare to envision something unconventional in a conventional-minded world.
John may be one of the most successful CEOs in business, but he’s also a philosopher, thinker, and teacher.
Mackey vulnerably shares his ideas around competition, authenticity, leadership, and overcoming obstacles in business and life. He delves into his difficult family dynamics, the importance of love, community, and acceptance, and his experience with psychedelics and spiritual awakenings. He also shares his experiences with “play” - something we all need to embrace a little more of in this life.
It’s so rare to get such an authentic glimpse into the mind and heart of a CEO, but John Mackey graciously opens his heart and his playbook for all to see. The Whole Story - Adventures in Love, Life and Capitalism is out now wherever books are sold.

One of the best interviews Rip has done, with an inspiring man. I've learned so much here, even clarifying things about myself. I will definitely buy John's new book. So, thank you, gentlemen, for bringing a great conversation to so many people--words and messages that the world sorely needs.

Hugely inspiring! Thank you for having Mackey describe his story. Being an entrepreneur is really what most of us long to be but instead give into our fears. Mackey is not only a great leader but also a great teacher,

Great interview, Rip! I had no idea that John was so deep. I've studied ACIM for 40 years and I feel hope that the world will be ok because there is a guy like him who has studied it and lives by it!. Can't wait for more "Love Life."

I appreciate the focus on plant based living and honesty about Alzheimer's and family relations. Some of the information about The Course in Miracles was relatable...I always wondered why people liked it and what they got from it. I have been calling people who follow "conscientious capitalism" by the name "compassionate capitalists" and didn't know there was a name for it so I listened to it with interest. I think though it's a mistake to speak on politics in this forum b/c Mackey did not give each group he discussed traditional, rational and progressive folk equal treatment and it detracted from his message. I lean progressive but I'm also very traditional and rational. I went to a Plantstrong immersion with Rip and it was unity building. Mackey spoke on polarization but some of his comments revealed his prejudices about progressives and was not unifying. I don't think synthesizing the beliefs of the "blue and red tribe" is a good idea. I think people learning how to disagree and still cooperate and move forward is a better idea! It sounds like he wanted one political party. (In Canada we have four main parties that are forced to work together) anyway onward with plant strong and pickleball....but maybe not politics!

. . . wow... wonderful interview....haven't yet finished it, but absolutely loved your question to John about how he became such a voracious reader &, most especially, loved his response, "...reading makes my universe bigger...ideas are fun, I love it..." . . . this puts my heart & soul's exact sentiments into words...God Bless You Both So Much... 🥰

. . . sorry to "hog" your comments space, but I just can't tear myself away from this, your most riveting interview....John has so, so much Love for all - I thought I was all alone in loving everyone (except for one human, who I now love, thanks to John's amazingly beautiful, loving insight) & now, this absolutely wonderful interview with John has opened my eyes, heart & soul so much more than I thought could be...thank you so much, Rip, for your most profound & deep questions for him . . . you, Rip, made it so clear that you were greatly impressed by, every word that came out of his mouth...I am just so impressed by both of you...I had stopped buying physical books long ago - just digital - but, I am just absolutely going to get it asap...God Bless You Both So Much... 🥰🥰🥰

Usually I only have positive stuff to say, but I must admit, I did not care for this interview. I was disappointed.
