IKR?! I’m here today too with protests and riots across the country! Wow. If they only knew what the death of George Floyd would bring us. And the fact that the police don’t even use a gun to kill anymore. #icantbreathe
The one absolute thing Maher hit on the head that I agree with is cops, good or bad, always protect their own and that's where the distrust comes from. People have their rights violated every day in this country and they feel powerless. Even when a good cop with a conscience (Joe Crystal for example) reports the wrong doing of a bad cop the good cop is labeled a "rat", gets harrassed by his fellow officers and is run out of the department. Before anything changes cops need to start policing themselves better and holding themselves to a higher standard. They're supposed to be the professionals here.
I talked to a police officer who said that part of her training was getting pepper sprayed in the eyes and running through a course. What kind of training is that?
It's not the truth, it just *rings* true, because he talks in a solemn way and all. That's just Bill's schtick. But once you dissect it, his arguments have a lot of holes. First of all, no one should "understand" killing random cops. If Bill wanted to advocate vigilantism, then at least kill the cops you think got away with murder, not just random cops, that's just stupid. Second, there have two major studies done on the police killing unarmed arrestees. Both showed cops were no more likely to kill a black person than a white who resists arrest and get violent. Actually, they were slightly more likely to kill the white dude. Not only that, but the black cops are more likely to shoot black suspects than white cops are. Also, how would you expect a crowd to react to talks of shooting cops and death and all? Yes, those are sad and depressing subjects, so they'll remain silent. Doesn't make what he said true.
@@nonmagicmike723 First of all. Bill doesn't say that we should "understand" the killing of police nor does he advocate for "vigilantiasm". He simply said that when you kill unnamed people, you shouldn't be surprise when people strike back. He was speaking from his point of view and not trying to make the killing of police something we all should understand. Secondly, what studies have shown that police doesn't kill more black people than white people?? If that was the case, black lives matter wouldn't exist nor would white people be quiet about it. And the whole point of police killing unarmed back people isn't bcuase they are necessarily resisting arrest, but about even when they cooperate, they still get shot and killed.
Leoson Bentley well I don't know what studies he's mentioning specifically, but too be fair he didn't say police kills less blacks than whites. He just said they are no more likely to kill a black person than a white when the suspect gets violent & resists arrest. Why does black life matters exist? Hmm let's see maybe because the media jumps on any story & runs with it before all the facts come out. If they know it will cause outrage that means more viewers. If it causes a protest all the better because that will give them something solid they can continue to report on. A perfect example was that whole hands up don't shoot. They took the word of the suspects friend over actually talking to the police to see if they can get the footage of the situation. The guy got into a struggle with an officer & went for his gun. The footage may not be the best but it made it clear it wasn't some innocent kid that was following the officers orders & still got shot. I'm not saying situations like that can't or haven't happened, but most of the stories they show on the news gets framed the way they want it. Since people are too lazy to look into the context of the situation & what actually happened. They see a 30 second clip with an officer who appears to cross the line & the comments & shares start flying. If you want to actually look into police encounters to see why the did what they did I recommend checking out the donut operators channel. He breaks down every police shooting that makes the news & some that dont. Also ASP, that channel is more about self protection, but you'll get a better idea of what the cops have to go through while making split life & death decisions. You'll see about that poor unarmed kid who was shot in his grandma's backyard. I'm sure you know that story from the news. They just knew it would be a headline & ran with it. Disregarding that the kid was fleeing from police so they had no idea that the fence he hopped led to his grandma's house. It's hard to see from the badge cam but when you slow it down you can clearly see the kid pull something out & get into a shooting stance. The officers had every right to assume it was a gun. After the shooting you can hear the two officers talking & it's pretty clear they really thought he had a gun. I'm not saying there aren't bad cops out there, just that the news needs to do a way better job reporting it. They have without a doubt made matters worse when they just run with a story like that.
@@leosonbentley2770 Black Lives Matters exist, because the white liberal oligarchs that control the movie, music, fashion, porn, late night talk shows, social media companies/silicon valley etc. ran out of CA, D.C, NY, Washington need to push narratives that victimize blacks for votes in order to win elections to further push their own agenda and sell themselves as a solution. It also pays quite well with the views that it generates so of course it's prioritized over other topics even if it means making the "story" into something it's not. Wealthy white liberals just use blacks for votes and money. Malcolm X said the same thing. Google it A lot of the individuals that fueled the movement also were resisting arrest. The guy selling cigarettes in NY. The unarmed teen that had just robbed a store, strangled the clerk, and then charged a cop that already had his gun drawn. The teen was also well over 6 foot and 225+ lbs. Trayvon that caused so much fuss got in his house and called his friend to explicitly tell him that he was going back outside to fight Zimmerman. He shouldn't have died, but how do justify intentionally going out of your way to fight a security guard that's trying to do their job when you know they're also armed? While he was a teen, I think Trayvon was also 6 foot so saying a cop killed a "kid" doesn't really hold a lot of weight. Blacks also have a tendency to claim something was done because of the individual's skin color even when it's not due to the past and their own paranoia. It's like the girl that gets cheated on and then has to have the password to every guy's phone that she dates afterwards The movement was more about unarmed individuals than necessarily "innocent" ones. You also make shit money to put your life on the line for people that you don't know. As someone that is related to a cop that now has PTSD from from an altercation that put him in the hospital in which an "unarmed" individual attempted to grab his gun from him, I don't blame cops for being arguably overly jumpy or paranoid. I've spoke to a cop that almost shot a child out of reaction walking around a corner due to the child pointing a toy gun at them, the child not immediately dropping it, and the cop not knowing that it was fake. Are you putting your life on the line everyday for $50,000 a year, because I doubt it? None of this argument acknowledges why these perceptions of blacks by police exist to begin with. Please explain why 54% of homicide offenders are black and 43% are white despite blacks only making up around ~20% of the population and whites making up ~%60 percent. This means a black person is 3-4 times more likely to kill someone. When cops are the ones that have to deal with these individuals, you don't think they're conscious of this? ucr.fbi.gov/crime-in-the-u.s/2017/crime-in-the-u.s.-2017/topic-pages/expanded-homicide
Bill Maher stunned Stephen Colbert so much, because he talked straight, that he actually didn't even know what to say at end of the clip. Only Bill can do that!
Did you see the first time BIll was on? Colbert trivialised a lot of points he was making with jokes and also interrupted him a lot. I get the feeling in this interview that Colbert was aware of that and was pulling back a lot in this interview to allow Maher more space. I think Colbert had a lot of responses whizzing around in his mind...but didn't voice them. I admire him for that and Maher was able to put his views across more completely here. Just my humble opinion.
You won’t regret it he has a great show, although the lack of an audience hampers things at the moment. If you haven’t seen it recommend religulous his film
Yeah...I've just started to tune into him and I gotta say...he is courageous and bold and so essential these days in a fearful and timid industry where presenters and celebrities are afraid to speak their truth.
Watching this after the murder of George Floyd and with what's happening in Minneapolis, Bill is 100% correct here. And he is not afraid to say why people react angrily and not in a way that fox news finds comfortable: "I don't condone it but I understand it. You can only look at so many videos of shooting of unarmed black people, I'm surprised actually this didn't happen before" - Maher.
Brian Hack Of course there’s two sides to every story the right side in the wrong side. The dudes a piece of shit some of these assholes think they can just do whatever they want. And luckily we live in a time when they can be filmed. It’s just sad that the last moments of another man are on film now for the world to see.
@@brianhack5806 So in spite of what the entire world saw, you're willing to give Derek Chauvin the benefit of the doubt but I have a feeling you *never* give the countless black men brutalized and killed that same benefit of the doubt!
I don't even see this as all that awkward, I just think that for once in a blue moon there is a profound discussion on this show and the audience is just listening
I have so much respect for Maher. That guy is not afraid to tell the truth, even if his views might be seen as politically incorrect. And yet, he can speak the truth while maintaining class and respect for those about which he speaks. What a great guy.
This is what I wanted when I said I wanted someone who would "Tell it like it is", not the jackass in the white house who can't seem to go a day without telling a painfully blatant lie. What were they thinking when they voted for him?
That's unlikely coz Colbert doesn't know how to manage him and can't match wits with him. Colbert was not very impressive in this segment at all, and I thought he was supposed to be brighter than this.
I feel like it was more than just Bill's presence. Colbert made an effort to do a real interview. I think he was a little rusty, but I wish he would get into real talk with people that have good things to say more often.
I agree with him when he says "the police department cannot be revenge for high school"...the government should pay police officers more and increase testing/training so that less idiots get into positions of authority. I knew someone in high school that was schizophrenic, threatened to kill people, claimed to see angels etc, and today he's a police officer for one of the major departments in our city. The system has to improve so that we don't let morons into positions of authority - but I'll actually take it a step further....to be honest I don't think the system will ever work, because groups like black lives matter hold onto anger from over 150 years ago and don't allow us to create an unbiased system where race isn't an issue. We've had enough time as a country - the idea that different races and cultures can live together in peace is nonsense, black lives matter is basically the antithesis of the kkk, which like Maher says, isn't okay but does make sense - when you have a hate group associated with one race, you're going to get another hate group associated with another race.
The ridiculous part is that they target white police officers that they don't even know, instead of actually targeting members of the KKK or the individual officers who actually killed the person, which creates a race war.
It was interesting to see Colbert trying to go a little PC there. Correctly so, he needed to make Maher say again that he does think Dallas was a tragedy, otherwise he would have been destroyed later. And Maher did.
+The Burrard Street Journal people are silly. what tension? They tend to agree on almost everything....he brought him on the show and let him talk...just threw in a few jokes cus it was getting heavy and he's a comedian...
Don't you love it how anytime someone speaks the truth so plainly, they always ask you to clarify or reword it, so that everyone can swallow it easier. Bravo to Bill for not backtracking.
It's not the truth. The two main studies done on police shootings show there's no bias on black men. Also, how would he know that cops go in as revenge for high school? That's just his opinion, not truth. And the whole "I understand you killing random cops" is dumb, if you want to go vigilante and exact revenge on those you think got away with murder, then kill the very cops who did it, not just random cops. Also, if any culture needs urgent change, it's anti-authority black culture. Bill has a way of saying things that's true-sounding, but not necessarily true. A lot of things can ring true when said in a certain tone, or you get edgy about them. Don't be so imperssionable.
Average US police training: 19 weeks. European police *education*: Minimum, yes _minimum_ 3 years. If that does not scare you to death, read it again until it does.
You can master a completely new language in 6 months. It's really not the length of the training but what the students get out of it. Also just because training ends doesn't mean that learning stops.
We are talking about police education and you compare it to military training. Do you view american police as military soldiers? Those two serve a completely different purpose. Military get respect because of their rifles, police should get respect without any guns whatsoever.
It's scary, but you have to realize that the US has a MUCH higher need for police enforcement than Europe. We have a much larger population and far more crime than any European nation.
I did not refuse to acknowledge anything. If you want to participate in a serious debate, you should brush up on your debating skills. Try googling "Logical Fallacies".
@@AirsoftTim92 I think Colbert serves as more of an entertaining satire then a voice of political conscious. I think 9 times out of 10 Stephen is the coolest, sharpest guy in the room but then Bill Maher let's him know who's boss
+Nleeklee Polowteehow Bro just stop you're making an ass out of yourself, it's okay to express your opinion but don't try to enforce it on other, especially with all those words that you call "English".
+Jay Zenitram what?! No he didn't lol. He needs to clarify himself because he just typed a whole bunch of words but that lead nowhere. I can say I agree with bill and he made such a good point. When a group (cops) continually kill innocent people and gets caught, it's only a matter of time those same innocent people will take their anger and retaliate. That's just a fact. Bill was right on the money here
Not at all. It's that Maher has a way of sounding like a jackass with no subtlety at all, even when he is right. Even if he said the opposite, no one would like what he says (he has kind of become more of a jerk over time).
Yeah I notice that also... Is that a confirmation that they're thinking I don't give a fuck what cops do to them as long as they don't treat me or my family like that?!?
He may not be wrong, but he is being very one sided. If a comedian's audience threw bottles at him and smashed his skull and he went to the club owner pissed off and the club owner said, "Thats the job!" That club owner is an asshole. I feel like BLM is so one sided that they ignore and cover up facts. The other side has a hard time seeing BLMs point of view because people get defensive when they feel attacked.
I'm surprised at myself. I'm a Christian and I used to really hate Bill Maher. I would avoid his show all costs. But now, I find myself liking him more and more. He criticizes both liberals and conservatives. No one is above reproach and criticism - I think Christ would agree with that.
Maher is a liberal relic from before the massive regression we see today. I may not agree with all of his viewpoints, but he's logical, and calls out the illogical trash we see the conservatives and regressive left throwing about; I respect him for that.
2 Thumbs Up. Or Down? First, Jesus said you shouldn't have hate in ypur heart. Second, Jesus was a liberal. He feed, clothed, and healed people for free. Something that the upper class wasn't so found of back in his era.
+ConfrontationalRealist umm...totally missed the point, dude. It's about the emotions & experience from high school that you take with you wherever you end up. High school "location" is totally irrelevant!!!!!! you obviously learned a lot in high school. Don't call ppl "fucking stupid" when you don't understand.
He's half right. It's the nerds AND the bullies that sometimes gravitate towards the police force. One looking for power that he never had, and another looking to maintain what he had and apply it legally through an institution that always looks out for its own. I dont apply this to all cops, but I do believe that all police forces are old boys clubs.
Bill Maher is one of the most honest men on TV period. I do not agree with him a lot of the time. Especially on religion as i strongly believe in God. However, i must say he does not care. He will always say the truth.
I would disagree. The man is incredibly intellectually dishonest. He subscribes to honesty only until it doesn't work out in his way. Kind of like Trump. If you noticed on his shows, he has a disgusting tendency to quickly cut off people who're making more sense than him. I've seen enough episodes of him being outwitted and then proceeding to pander to his audience for half-witted laughter. Take this one episode with Dinesh D'Souza for example. He brought out D'Souza and decided to blame him for having a part in him getting fired off his show for his 9/11 comments. When D'Souza corrected him and declared that Bill's "coward" comments got him fired, Bill went on to do what he always does best - avoid actual discourse by pulling out the "comedy card". He's been doing this longer than either Jon or Stephen, and yet no one gives a crap about him. Why's that surprising?
Kineridge I wasn't talking about D'Souza's disposition; I was talking about Bill's. Making sarcastic remarks after being called out on his own mistakes was just downright shameful. Being the host, trying to turn the audience against the guest is a tad bit shameful
It doesn't need to be explained to anyone but for intelligent, thoughtful people the discussion goes beyond declaring whether it's right or wrong. That's not, and it shouldn't be, the end of the discussion.
I was watching a guy who got suspended recently for shooting someone, see the amount of reprimands this guy had and they said he used to get beat up in school.
I was trying to figure what was happening, 'cause it felt awkward so thanks for sharing your insight... I wasn't sure if Stephen was agreeing with Bill and was trying to stay neutral or if he hated Bill. I think the more I watch... Stephen might not like Bill.
I'd say it's more like Hate-Love-Hate-Love, if that makes any sense. They have lots of disagreements, starting with religious or ideological philosophies, but again, compared to how wide media is spread out, they have lots in common and understand one another, and there's always that effective chemistry, even when they may not be on the same page with one another.
I think so. They're very different people with different personalities and Maher has ego and self-righteousness to burn. It makes for an interesting dynamic though.
PLS Critic then you’re ignorant. Because he’s a typical liberal. He’s selective with his outrage and rights. Jordan Peterson would have a field day with him.
+quicksite I kept ignoring the suggestion to watch this video in the youtube home screen because I was utterly convinced it was an old post. I have to admit I'm glad the apparent lack of chemistry in their last encounter was all in our head.. I like them both with their virtues and flaws :D
I don't think it is all in anyone's head. There are enough commenters here remarking about Colbert's way toned down critiques on all areas of society he used to skewer on Colbert Report -- that where there's smoke, there must be some fire. Others point out Colbert can't be as free in expressing himself given this is now a huge CBS Entertainment show, and as such, he has many people to please, including CBS brass and sponsors. Bill doesn't have to censor himself - or rather, he COULD, but he's not an equivocating talking head like almost everyone in TV News at every network- and he chooses to not censor his honest thoughts. ... This in turn makes Colbert a little uncomfortable because he can't go mano a mano in an equally free way. He's filtering himself now in a a hundred ways. I'm not blaming him, mind you, it's a huge responsibility on Colbert's head. Nevertheless, it appears to me that, based on both that prior appearance and on this recent appearance that Maher has lost some respect for Colbert- keenly aware Colbert is doing some of this equivocating because of the demands on him to be "fair & balanced" so to speak for mainstream audiences, and keep sponsors happy. They are both exceedingly bright & observant. But Bill Maher remains the consistent Bill Maher of the past 25 years. Colbert is the inconsistent one now. He won't allow himself to be as outspoken as he was on The Report. That's kind of sad. An economic reality. But still sad nonetheless. Fallon's a light-weight, though a funny one. Kimmel's equally bright, but likes to keep things entertaining, so even though he CAN do a serious interview, he's more likely than not to wisecrack throughout it. FInally, my own thought: I was very curious how Colbert was going to be on his new show... Afterall, he's going up against two other funny hosts of late night TV. .... He's definitely softer now. I do like that he has onto his show more culturally important guests than just the usual fare. In that way he has distinguished himself.
Not sure how to take it, I know I can be smug with my friends and I don't like that part of me ..... I would hope they realize going down that road will turn some of us away.... In regards to the fact that if Stephen is doing it just to get ratings or because he may have some ego issues that have become part of his own personality through being in the public eye.... they are many ways to debate and be funny without being demeaning. On a more positive note I do appreciate what they are discussing and hope some good can come from exposing this way of thinking to the large media audience Stephen enjoys.
Maher could easily live a life of privilege insulated from the unpleasantness the rest of us have to face every day. After all that's what most other rich celebrities do and it doesn't seem to cost them anything, or affect their credibility. He could stay silent, not rock the boat, make token gestures to ease his conscience, but he doesn't. I have to respect that. As much as I disagree with him on certain things I respect that he obviously still cares enough to speak up.
I dunno man. Hea arrogant, hes pigheaded and he makes his mobry saying outragious things... he needs to keep going. Watch his show most weeks, and am a fan... AND none of what I just said is untrue
I like Colbert and I like Maher, and seeing them together is like, in the words of one wrestling commentator, "an unstoppable force meeting an immovable object".
I would liked to have seen Jon Stewart have a conversation like the this one or the one with Rachel Maddow with Maher. Was he ever on the Daily Show, Maher?
Bill Maher often brings a magically pleasant hostility with him that I find ever more lovely. And his ability to charmingly sell an analogy as ribald as apt seems always present too. It's a pleasure to see these two interact.
it would be, if Bill was the only political show that was good.... Colbert REPORT KILLED Bill previous shows in rating and now Oliver is slaying Bill. Bill was NEVER in the top..... he is just bitter. ;)
+Cary Chilton But ratings aren't necessarily indicative of quality. Last Week Tonight is great, the Colbert Report was great, and Real Time is great. I doubt he's bitter about it. Especially seeing how Bill's been at this for years and years and years.
He's an absolute douche. He's only on this show to help his show's ratings. Colbert shouldn't invite him back. Like Cary said, he's so damn bitter! Come back when you have an emmy. bye felicia
He's an asshole, but he's also an asshole that's right about a lot of things and speaks up when others don't. He's also wrong about things too, but to err is human. We just have to make sure we all call each other out on our crap, like he's doing with police culture in some places.
He's always been intelligent and logical on almost everything he talks about but he's also pretty smarmy and abrasive. I can handle it but I like it most when he talks to someone like Colbert who is at least as intelligent as he is.
when i was in high school in the UK, part of the curriculum (like a lot of schools) is to do ' Work Experience'. After a couple of weeks, in the class room we all discussed what our experiences were like in front of the whole class. A few kids went and did stints at the local police station. All became 'honourary deputies' and had a spot in the force if they chose to seek police work after high school except for one kid. When they asked him why he wanted to be in the police force, he answered 'I want to have power over people.' He didn't say it as a joke either. I feel that in the US the ones we see committing these crimes are exactly like this kid in my class.
Colbert is a very thoughtful man and it's not easy to come up with a quick response or question to "new" thoughts/perspectives especially when it's such a delicate topic. Might be wrong but that's my take.
I'm pretty anti-liberal on most things, but Maher is spot-on here that the police culture has to change. The training needs to change and there needs to be much more accountability when an officer is accused of abusing their power. There also needs to be a body camera on every officer that is used anytime there's an interaction with the public.
+In_Correct also once facial recognition and other video scanning tech comes in it is a privacy risk. The official Black Lives Matter policy page doesn't fully endorse body cams
Romulus I I agree. But the problem is the "Conservative Media" (FOX, OANN, etc.) is Pro-Police, no matter what. They say that The Police are always supposed to be innocent.
I feel like he's gonna end up going back to Comedy Central sooner rather than later tbh yeah it might be better paying but he can't be full "Stephen Colbert" like he was in the Colbert Report
I feel like they hate each other! I don't know what it is, every time Colbert interviews Maher there's this air of hostility. I love both of their shows (a little more partial to Maher's)
There was a bit of rivalry when The Stephen Colbert Show was still on the air. Politically, Stephen Colbert is more on the liberal side and Bill Maher is more Libertarian.
Maher had no idea what to say so he rambled off a few cliche statements and whined about them. From an intellectual standpoint he is totally overrated.
Unfortunately that's his job. CC is more open to controversial topics-- hell, they air South Park. Networks aren't going to let him. although he's still funny.
Also the guests on the show cater towards Hollywood celebrities coming to promote their products. Unlike The Stephen Colbert show where he can pick and choose the more intelligent guests to joust with.
nah, not really.... he definitely is told what not to do now, but he is in the TOP paid late night hosts, top rated show and cbs' show with Cordon is all about celebrity entertain. Colbert has celebs that he wants, but most guests are political or current even relevant or science related.
He has said before that on the Colbert Report he played a political character. He played hardball to test the beliefs of those he was interviewing. I miss it too but this is an entirely new setup.
+Brad Edward Mejia Never said or meant it did... Reform what though??? Are you suggesting that reform has never been attempted? What obstacles exist that prevent your reform?
I doubt it. I'm a veteran and former corrections officer. We were held to a higher standard in Iraq when we were literally surrounded by people trying to kill us and shooting mortars on us while we were sleeping. I managed to not shoot anybody restrained on the ground. If the police can't do their jobs then they shouldn't put on the uniform.
Yeah its sad that people are freaking out on police officers for them doing their job and people are justifying criminals actions and so they get more violent because it seems justified to them. 2016 is a fucked up year where people are taking the criminals side.
I haven't seen two intelligent people talk about this subject matter without screaming. This was such a great conversation between two great comedians.
I agree with Bill Maher 100% on this one! I don't agree with his views on Muslims, Israel, and the Middle East at all, but he definitely took off his blinders when it comes to all these police shootings. Everybody seems to want to change the subject. Police killings of unarmed people in America is a SERIOUS problem and we should stay on topic.
***** Now guess what the % of blacks is in America - 13%. But I do agree, these cop killings of unarmed civilians is not only blacks, like the media want us to believe. As a Latino, it SERIOUSLY bothers me when I see ANYBODY, regardless of race, get gunned down like a dog! Bottom line these police killings of unarmed civilians has got to stop!!!
Toxic0788 This thread is not about religion so I'm not going to get into it, but I will say this: in a nut shell - Muslims are bad and Israel can do no wrong, is what I usually hear from Bill Maher.
all lives matter? yall are stupid picking sides like this.. what's the difference between a cops life and a black person life.. how about a Mexican life? omish life? what's the difference.. a life is a life there all equally important and everyone taking sides is you saying that you think just one life matters and the rest don't... don't feed into the Bullshit people... your just as bad as these people killing innocent people over nothing
There shouldn't be any life taking in the first place... that's the point... a cop shouldn't automatically pull his gun over his taser in a bad situation and a black community shouldn't get together to kill a bunch of cops... do you really see how this isn't solving anything? Just making it worse... fighting fire with fire just makes a bigger fire
bjbell52 Nope, if all cops were shooting black people constantly, then why have there only been 2 videos about it? Where is all the overwhelming evidence of police brutality. Because last time I check Sterling had a gun and the cop who killed Philando was asian, a minority himself. Thats 2 occurrences.
Cops are trained in America. The problem is that they're trained with reflex techniques, not assessment techniques. That is to say, they are trained to act on reflex, not critical thought.
reflex is one thing - outright murder is another..can anyone get into the mentality of someone willing to point a gun at a child and pull the trigger? - to say little of a government that stands by ant lets it happen..pretty frightening, isn't it.....
It doesn't matter how they are trained. everyone is responsible for their own actions. it says protect and serve and they don't do that thats why they get killed and arrested by few good cops and civilians.
Colbert is on CBS -They are conservative. Colberts jokey responses or just plain silence to Mahers controversial statements are proof of that. The #OutrageNation will take your job
Colbert's whole thing is to play devil's advocate. To get an idea of his real thoughts is to listen to his opening bits. But with his interviews he likes to throw in what the other side is saying...that's always been his thing which makes him a little different.
The cops are outta control but there's a lot of guys out there pushing buttons. I saw a, guy the other day flying a drone over a police station and then out came 2 cops and see the fuckin lip he was giving the cops, all because he was recording them. The captain came out and diffused it and apologised to the guy saying they still hadn't figured out the rules on drones. Then he started giving the captain fucking shit. I was saying to myself, this guy deserves to get his ass beat.
I remember President Obama worked with the Chicago Police department and their training to help stop violence. He was doing very well. He has always cared. HONESTLY CARED.
Consider---This was FOUR YEARS ago. And what changed for all the law enforcement promises of reform? IT'S WORSE. Now what, wait and see for another 4 years? F that noise.
And worse yet, the training they are given is often just a little bit off; they are not being trained for what they should be, and they don't even get enough of that.
The simple fact that there are A LOT of out of shape/super fat and lazy looking field cops out there is very telling on the amount of training some of them went through...
Bill Maher is a legend and just undeniable. He is exactly the reality check this country needs. It's a shame his show is on HBO where you can actually be real but gets a quarter the views of The Late Show. He is the jagged little pill we need to swallow, ASAP.
I agree... I think he made some good points. Police here in australia carry, but they don't shoot people hardly ever. It makes me wonder if it's because we have gun control, police don't assume everybody has a gun so they aren't as scared. I don't know... we live in a police state so people get arrested for nothing all the time. Police don't need a warrant to search you or your car when ever they like. Maybe it's this reason they always feel in control even without shooting people... They are definitely still recruiting highschool bullies who want power over others because they feel powerless in their own lives. I would say probably 60% fit into that category. It's a bit sad...
I don't understand why people say " black behavior needs to change" because what is that supposed to mean? It just sounds so racist. Why can't people accept the fact that there is a problem? There are plenty of videos of other races of people not complying with police and they don't get shot, I mean even has far as physically fighting back police and they are eventually restrained and arrested alive! Smh. I pray this country gets it together , God only knows how bad we need unity.
The question is whether or not blacks are being treated unfairly, relative to other races. There is a problem with police brutality but I don't see strong evidence of there being a race issue. There is very strong evidence that men are being treated unfairly by the justice system.
If you want to solve police brutality, the answer is super simple. Just make bodycams mandatory for all US police, put one 360 degree view camera per patrol car, and make all the video 100% the property of the American citizens. Problem solved.
What do you think they do now? Where do you think they get all these police shootout videos? Believe me look at them and you will not agree that many of the shootings are rooted in police arrogance.. and I am a person who has had guns pointed at him 4 times, 3 times by police. once in a "riot", and twice in tenuous situations.. justified.. not really.. but...
***** Not all injustices are caught on camera and even when they are, a lot of the videos are covered up because the legal system is fucked. Why do you think the courthouse and police station share the same building? This way if your rights are violated, it's documented no matter what and is your property, no matter what. On top of that, cops will be less likely to do stupid shit if their every move is being recorded from like 4 different angles and have no way of hiding it.
I really do not think that this is the solution of the problem: How do other countries do it? Look at police kill rates in Germany, UK, Norway, Iceland... They are a FRACTION of the US... And it has nothing to do with body cams. (Please people do not start replying by talking about population sizes, I am talking about RATES - which factors in population sizes)
I always get nervous when these two discuss anything and I don't know whether to be nervous excited or nervous scared. The tension is almost palpable. These are two men who are very similar and yet also VERY different. On a positive note, what's really fantastic about the society we live in is that these two men can co-exist with the very different ideas and beliefs and it's ok. There are no reprocussions for differing morale systems. So thanks!
"We've seen police shootings where they fired multiple times, at very close range, and didn't even hit the guy... Spend some time at the range." "...Or be a Storm trooper..." I fuckin died XD.
Bill Maher has rarely been flat out wrong about anything in the last 25 years. It's pretty amazing how consistently spot-on he's been, even when his own audience boos him. What a boss.
I agree with everything Maher is saying but there are other issues that need to be addressed here, and one of them is the big elephant in the room no one likes to talk about: 2nd amendment! In a country were weapons circulate so easily no wonder cops are more prone to point a gun at you knowing that you might be easily armed yourself, in every other country in the western hemisphere a cop will need to think long and hard before doing that, since even gangsters are unlikely to go around carrying firearms and shooting someone who wasn't visibly armed will almost certainly lead to a prison sentence and the end of your career at the very least. I'm not interested in a pro-or-con argument here, just stating a simple fact: whatever your opinion on the matter, that's a shit sandwich you all have to digest one way or the other....
+Professicchio thank you, but first I want to correct myself saying it wasn't errors you made, just something I feel you overlooked. Which was the need for police reform. With so many entering the force it is time that these cops get the training they truly need. Being watched over by veteran cops who have been doing the right thing. We are seeing these young cops who don't even know the rules they need to abide by as cops and they already have the gun drawn before a simple traffic stop. As for the 2nd amendment. It is ok to carry a handgun if you must. I personally believe we shouldn't have guns at all. But to ban all semi and automatic weapons. Because truly there is no need for that.
So the people who oppose Bill Maher's statement are presumed as anti-Muslim? Enlighten me on how the fuck that even makes any sense. And then take a seat, pal. You obviously have no place in politics if you're thinking like that.
David Rook 1.He isn't only speaking for Alton Sterling and Philando Castile 2.There are Rodney King cases that probably do go around, just because we don't record every situation doesn't mean it's not present. I think you're the one who needs to open his eyes
+Denzel Richie not to mention all the white people who are pulled over too and harassed ... there was a case on the Web were a cop pulled a white guy over for not stopping because his breaks didn't work the cop beat him so bad he sent him to the hospital .. I bet when stories like this are video taped which this was white people would be more sympathetic .... police brutality is not exclusive you know
This was aired 3 years ago.... interesting to see the similar pattern today.
IKR?! I’m here today too with protests and riots across the country! Wow. If they only knew what the death of George Floyd would bring us. And the fact that the police don’t even use a gun to kill anymore. #icantbreathe

I didn't even realize it was from 3 years ago. It's scary the same thing is happening today. I was also wondering why they weren't wearing face masks.
Because nothing's changed between then and now.
Bill Maher Hit the Nail on the Head with this.
Thumb* everything that he said can be contradicted
The one absolute thing Maher hit on the head that I agree with is cops, good or bad, always protect their own and that's where the distrust comes from. People have their rights violated every day in this country and they feel powerless. Even when a good cop with a conscience (Joe Crystal for example) reports the wrong doing of a bad cop the good cop is labeled a "rat", gets harrassed by his fellow officers and is run out of the department. Before anything changes cops need to start policing themselves better and holding themselves to a higher standard. They're supposed to be the professionals here.
mature of you
I talked to a police officer who said that part of her training was getting pepper sprayed in the eyes and running through a course. What kind of training is that?
and the heads of the nails are hurting!
The truth will make any crowd go silent.
Google it
A lot of the individuals that fueled the movement also were resisting arrest. It's like the girl that gets cheated on and then has to have the password to every guy's phone that she dates afterwards
The movement was more about unarmed individuals than necessarily "innocent" ones.

Bill was spitting facts like this 3yrs ago? I need to educate myself on this guy a little bit more
You won’t regret it he has a great show, although the lack of an audience hampers things at the moment. If you haven’t seen it recommend religulous his film
@@nigeh5326 indeed, bill is awesome
Especially how prescient he was about Trump and the whole post-election debacle.
And he is not afraid to say why people react angrily and not in a way that fox news finds comfortable:
"I don't condone it but I understand it. You can only look at so many videos of shooting of unarmed black people, I'm surprised actually this didn't happen before" - Maher.

Loved this interview. I would love to see Bill appear on this show more often.
oh, yess! Awesome television!!
That's unlikely coz Colbert doesn't know how to manage him and can't match wits with him. Colbert was not very impressive in this segment at all, and I thought he was supposed to be brighter than this.
+peggy olson Colbert is not the man he was before his deal with CBS. He can't just say whatever comes to mind, he's a TV Late Show host now.
Fuck off
I feel like it was more than just Bill's presence. Colbert made an effort to do a real interview. I think he was a little rusty, but I wish he would get into real talk with people that have good things to say more often.
Most interesting clip from this show I've ever seen....
dislike and report. move along
Bill Maher is one of the last people on TV that actually makes sense
Are you serious?
Are you? As far as people today with talk shows - Kimmel, Fallon, Colbert, Meyers - yeah I think he makes the most sense out of all of them.
sdwhitesox By talking shit about our police? His liberal brain has been washed by black lives matter.

This might be a stupid question but why don't they like each other? Shouldn't they be best friends, religious views aside?
+The Burrard Street Journal people are silly. what tension? They tend to agree on almost everything....he brought him on the show and let him talk...just threw in a few jokes cus it was getting heavy and he's a comedian...
Don't you love it how anytime someone speaks the truth so plainly, they always ask you to clarify or reword it, so that everyone can swallow it easier. Bravo to Bill for not backtracking.
So True

You could also say he DOES care, because he will always say the truth (or what he believes is the truth)
I don't know about "the truth" but he'll say what he believes to be truth.

On a more positive note
I do appreciate what they are discussing and hope some good can come from exposing this way of thinking to the large media audience Stephen enjoys.
Their interactions are just too good to not bring back!
Well, unlike a lot of celebrities, Maher didn't grow up rich, or even well off. He knows a bit more about being poor than most people in his position.
+Geahk Burchill I bet he still lives behind a wall.and has body guards.
Given you guys have a billionaire in the white house. I am sure he'll change everything.
I dunno man. Hea arrogant, hes pigheaded and he makes his mobry saying outragious things... he needs to keep going.
Watch his show most weeks, and am a fan... AND none of what I just said is untrue
aintwurfnufnifitaintfree ❤️ agreed
I like Colbert and I like Maher, and seeing them together is like, in the words of one wrestling commentator, "an unstoppable force meeting an immovable object".
The quote is The irresistible force meeting the immovable object.
+Brandon Shaver no its unstoppable force
I would liked to have seen Jon Stewart have a conversation like the this one or the one with Rachel Maddow with Maher. Was he ever on the Daily Show, Maher?
An unstoppable force meeting an immovable object would just go right through it, nothing impressive.
that's the picture I have in my head every time I hear that saying
LOL at Bill burning Colbert's show at the end
meh. He's just alright.
Eh, it was a joke and they both knew it. They are professionals.
Bill Maher often brings a magically pleasant hostility with him that I find ever more lovely. And his ability to charmingly sell an analogy as ribald as apt seems always present too. It's a pleasure to see these two interact.
Exactly !
what an arsehole Bill Maher is.
"It's actually not, I have to make it good" sickest burn it talk show history!
Never seen Colbert burned so badly
it would be, if Bill was the only political show that was good.... Colbert REPORT KILLED Bill previous shows in rating and now Oliver is slaying Bill. Bill was NEVER in the top..... he is just bitter. ;)
I was thinking it before he said it. It wasnt that clever.
Come back when you have an emmy. bye felicia
I admire how truthful Bill Maher is.
Bill isn't diminishing the tragedy, he's being bluntly honest.
i never liked bill maher but i'm starting to agree more and more with what he says these days
One thing you gotta respect about bill is he calls it like he sees it. And he's not afraid to disagree with people.
Really !
Good for you. Seriously. I love it when I see the light go on in people's heads.
when i was in high school in the UK, part of the curriculum (like a lot of schools) is to do ' Work Experience'.
Bill Maher always manages to cut through the B.S. and get to the real root of the issue. He is a model of clarity on most issues he tackles.
Only for people who have ZERO grasp/experience of the issue and all the context and nuances involved.
Colbert left him hanging one too many times
I think he was letting it resonate
Colbert is a very thoughtful man and it's not easy to come up with a quick response or question to "new" thoughts/perspectives especially when it's such a delicate topic. Might be wrong but that's my take.
Michael Moretti You're not paying attention
to me he seems emotional about the subject. not angry at bill.
well yeah because that's not how a good interview usually works.
I wish Bill Maher would run for president.
I'd support a Sanders/ Maher ticket.
You want to take a job he won't like.
President of Cuckville. Bill Maher is a leftist communist cock sucker that should move to the UK.
Yeah it would give us 2 pieces of shit in a row.
+Christopher Mcmurray drunk Irish dumbass
Deep and heavy discussion for a throwaway lighthearted show.
I'm pretty anti-liberal on most things, but Maher is spot-on here that the police culture has to change. The training needs to change and there needs to be much more accountability when an officer is accused of abusing their power. There also needs to be a body camera on every officer that is used anytime there's an interaction with the public.
The problem is they either turn off the body cam or the footage conveniently becomes lost.
+In_Correct also once facial recognition and other video scanning tech comes in it is a privacy risk.
The official Black Lives Matter policy page doesn't fully endorse body cams
I would think holding the police/government accountable would be the conservative opinion. They're the ones always yelling about the constitution.
Romulus I I agree. But the problem is the "Conservative Media" (FOX, OANN, etc.) is Pro-Police, no matter what. They say that The Police are always supposed to be innocent.
You're anti-liberal? So you're anti-freedom? Because liberty is just another word for freedom.
It's like Colberts afraid to get serious on his new show
He works at CBS now....
New show, LOL!
He isn't intelligent enough to have a serious thought.
CBS is more restrictive than Comedy Central. "Family Channel"
+TheBambinoitaliano You're crazy...Maher is as liberal as it gets.
+TheBambinoitaliano Maher endorsed Bernie
that's the opposite of libertarian
it's because Colbert believes in a magical sky God.
I really enjoy when Maher is on the show. They're both so intelligent. Most people will find this interview as awkward, when it really isn't.
Maher had no idea what to say so he rambled off a few cliche statements and whined about them. From an intellectual standpoint he is totally overrated.
shame you've so few votes...
... this is America we are contrasting to....
intelligence is relative, no?
;-)
Most people find it superficial, meaningless and boring, but it really isn't.
I thought the between the scenes on daily show where Trevor interacted with the congressman was better and much more genuine
He’s still saying the same thing four years later. He’s consistent
Can always sense the tension between them lol A lot of great points hit, Bill as good as always.
Colbert lost his edge. He used to be so sharp over at the Colbert Report, but now he got all soft fawning over stupid celebrities.
Unfortunately that's his job. CC is more open to controversial topics-- hell, they air South Park. Networks aren't going to let him. although he's still funny.
because he's doing the late show, not the colbert report
Anyone against the police should ride with one for a weekend... You will absolutely change your mind.
Not all cops are good. Not all cops are bad. Lets be more careful who we let be cops.
Asking for change and reform in our law enforcement system doesn't mean one is anti-police.
+Brad Edward Mejia Never said or meant it did... Reform what though??? Are you suggesting that reform has never been attempted? What obstacles exist that prevent your reform?
smoothcollected No The cops had every right philando castile was resisting being dead
"By the book? Well maybe you need a new book!" 5:00.
6 more policemen got shot today in Baton Rouge. 3 killed.
Yeah its sad that people are freaking out on police officers for them doing their job and people are justifying criminals actions and so they get more violent because it seems justified to them. 2016 is a fucked up year where people are taking the criminals side.
Thanks for sharing I didn't have my tv on but you better believe CNN is going to keep this on for at least 2 weeks if the shooters are black.
Is Bills rethoric behind the violence on our streets?
I just posted this for edification, for the record. Not taking sides in an argument.
I know I'm watching. This is everyday now it seems.
17 unarmed blacks killed by cops in 2015. Guess how many whites? 17.
+Josiah Chacko The poster didn't say blacks. He said people.
+Trey Hammond oh, my bad lol
Once again Bill is 100% correct
Aye a white person who understands #blacklivesmatter. Rare!!!
+Jay Smith oh god
#bluelivesmatter
all lives matter? yall are stupid picking sides like this.. what's the difference between a cops life and a black person life.. how about a Mexican life? omish life? what's the difference.. a life is a life there all equally important and everyone taking sides is you saying that you think just one life matters and the rest don't... don't feed into the Bullshit people... your just as bad as these people killing innocent people over nothing
It seems that "common" sense isn't so common after all
I agree more than ever with Bill, especially in the wake of Floyde.
Bill is a voice of reason.
Bill is right most of the time, but this he falls flat on. Completely incorrect.
Incorrect about most cops being honest and hard working and not willing to just pull their guns and open fire? Sounds just about right to me.
bjbell52 Nope, if all cops were shooting black people constantly, then why have there only been 2 videos about it? Where is all the overwhelming evidence of police brutality. Because last time I check Sterling had a gun and the cop who killed Philando was asian, a minority himself. Thats 2 occurrences.
John Doe There have been a lot more videos out there besides two. Just google for them.
Yea, a lot of videos collected throughout years and years.
John, either you do not live in the U.S or you are simply a troll, because *No one* is that stupid.
Bill won this round. Period.
I love this kind of interview.
Cops should be educated and have degrees like what is now demanded in Europe. It’s called intelligent policing.
"The Police department cannot be revenge for Highschool"
Best quote ever!!!
Colbert is way more conservative than he lets on
Maybe
You never caught him on Comedy Central???
His Brain is Big.... only diminished by his compassion
His BRAIN is RAZOR SHARP
Colbert is on CBS -They are conservative. Colberts jokey responses or just plain silence to Mahers controversial statements are proof of that. The #OutrageNation will take your job
Colbert's whole thing is to play devil's advocate. To get an idea of his real thoughts is to listen to his opening bits. But with his interviews he likes to throw in what the other side is saying...that's always been his thing which makes him a little different.
He’s a practicing Catholic who teaches Sunday school so yeah
Well... that got awkward
Intelligent conversation makes you feel awkward?
MRios1128 No just the tension you feel between the two who don't agree. There was a moment at the end where the just stared at each other.
lol you probably had to spell check intelligent kid.
+Richard MacDonnell you're a pretentious piece of shit.
I totally agree with Bill Maher.
"because i have to make it good" lol! He keeps it 100! 😂
I remember President Obama worked with the Chicago Police department and their training to help stop violence. He was doing very well. He has always cared. HONESTLY CARED.
Your funny!
Comment Baiter
yea that worked really fu**ing well
You remember. You must have a medical Dope card.
This definitely aged like fine wine.
Consider---This was FOUR YEARS ago. And what changed for all the law enforcement promises of reform? IT'S WORSE. Now what, wait and see for another 4 years? F that noise.
Bill Maher always peaks the truth, police officers aren't TRAINED enough..point made, I
speaks*
And worse yet, the training they are given is often just a little bit off; they are not being trained for what they should be, and they don't even get enough of that.
The simple fact that there are A LOT of out of shape/super fat and lazy looking field cops out there is very telling on the amount of training some of them went through...
Peaks !!!!
Bill is right: it’s quality, not quantity.
"You don't keep shooting people and expect no one to shoot back" Wow; that's the mother of all points!
Bill's right, perfect analogy with the priesthood.
Bill Maher is a legend and just undeniable. He is exactly the reality check this country needs. It's a shame his show is on HBO where you can actually be real but gets a quarter the views of The Late Show. He is the jagged little pill we need to swallow, ASAP.
I cannot agree more on Bill's opinion. Perfectly and carefully phrased.
Smh. I pray this country gets it together , God only knows how bad we need unity.
amen
+daarrkmatter I agree
Maxwell Edison Hey look, ignorance in it's virgin form.
The question is whether or not blacks are being treated unfairly, relative to other races. There is a problem with police brutality but I don't see strong evidence of there being a race issue. There is very strong evidence that men are being treated unfairly by the justice system.
Banana Rama Hey look, you have nothing of value to contribute. Instead you just whine about what other people have said. Sad!
8 YEARS AGO & STILL COPS ARE OUT OF CONTROL
If you want to solve police brutality, the answer is super simple. Just make bodycams mandatory for all US police, put one 360 degree view camera per patrol car, and make all the video 100% the property of the American citizens.
Problem solved.
+Keith Richards I 100% agree. Unfortunately, the people in charge love complicated solutions.
What do you think they do now? Where do you think they get all these police shootout videos? Believe me look at them and you will not agree that many of the shootings are rooted in police arrogance.. and I am a person who has had guns pointed at him 4 times, 3 times by police. once in a "riot", and twice in tenuous situations.. justified.. not really.. but...
It still doesn't help. They are never punished
So thanks!
Bill is right on..and 4 years later he is even more on point!
Props to Bill Maher for standing his
ground in a difficult conversation!💯
I admire Bill Maher. He is a true realist! Sane, witty and intelligent!
I beg to differ I think he is merely a used car salesman that is completely full of bullshit
That audience must have been SO uncomfortable.
Total silence from them for most of Maher's comments.
"It takes more than man's laws alone to make men see right."---John F. Kennedy
I love Bills burn, right at the end.
"We've seen police shootings where they fired multiple times, at very close range, and didn't even hit the guy... Spend some time at the range."
"...Or be a Storm trooper..."
I fuckin died XD.
'I'm surprised it didn't happen before', the exact words I been saying for the past few days
Bill Maher has rarely been flat out wrong about anything in the last 25 years. It's pretty amazing how consistently spot-on he's been, even when his own audience boos him. What a boss.
100% AGREE with Bill Maher.
So we just have to take your word for it and that's that? What a shame, cause you made a couple of errors in your judgement there
Edwin Colon C'mon shoot if you must.
Bill has those same opinions too, and speaks those often on his show,
+Professicchio thank you, but first I want to correct myself saying it wasn't errors you made, just something I feel you overlooked.
So France should ban trucks?
That got a bit tense. Perhaps Bill was hangry.
Especially after the joke about Catholic priests. Colbert's demeanor really changed.
What's the good reason?
Its pretty hard to respect someone who takes an attack on paedophilia inside religion as a personal attack on them.
hangry or hungry
"Hangry" is that state where one's ire is aroused as a result of feeling hungry.
The anti-muslim Bill Maher fans are disapointed with his statement.
they're big mad! LOL
We are?
+MrNosreme70 yup
So the people who oppose Bill Maher's statement are presumed as anti-Muslim? Enlighten me on how the fuck that even makes any sense. And then take a seat, pal. You obviously have no place in politics if you're thinking like that.
Evan Lamping Can you read?
You cannot shoot unarmed people continually without someone shooting back.
Exactly.
"Or be a stormtrooper"....that was a good one hahaha
Everything he said was completely right, what can anybody possibly hate about this??
Unarmed? Both were armed, and he compared Rodney King to current events. Seriously open your eyes.
I bet when stories like this are video taped which this was white people would be more sympathetic .... police brutality is not exclusive you know
Tyrone Ingram I'm well aware
what happened to rodney is still no different
The proctologist analogy ... Nice !!!!!
This is a full circle right here
I wish Bill and Stephen didn't hate each other so much.
More like "frienemies"
I didn't see any hate here. Steven even said that his previous Maher interview was his favorite.
Did you see that interview? It was the most hostile interview he's ever done.
no, more like "they hate each other a lot"
yeah both are salty as fuck
