  • On this day, 18 May, 1980, Mount St. Helens in the northwestern United States exploded with a force 1,600 times the size of the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima. In the eruption, the blast of lava and hot rock devastated 600 square kilometers of land, wiping them clean of all life. A 5.1 magnitude earthquake rocked the landscape, and ash was deposited in 11 US states. The massive eruption caused snow, ice, and entire glaciers on the mountain to melt, forming a series of large volcanic mudslides that reached as far as 80 km southward to the Columbia River. This was the biggest landslide in recorded history.
Among those killed in the eruption was Harry R. Truman, a World War I veteran, bootlegger, prospector, and lodge owner who became something of a folk hero in the midst of the terror. He was known for his resilience in refusing to leave, committing that if that mountain shall go down, so will he. Harry R. Truman was killed by a pyroclastic flow that overtook his lodge and buried the site under 46 m of debris.

Of course he wished to stay. He was 84, His wife had died and he had no one left outside. He had spent his life on the mountain, if that was gone and he had left, what would he even do?

My mom (who grew up and lived outside of America back then) saw the eruption on the news when she was a kid. Truly a dark time for my lovely state

I was on holiday in the USA and seeing those volcanoes was really cool.

I was 28 miles from the crater when it blew (fishing on Silver Lake with my grandparents). I met Harry a few weeks earlier and I can't fault his wisdom/decision. If you’re going to go out, do it with a bang. I have lived in the shadow of that mountain a good chunk of my life and feel like it gave me a better appreciation for the power of physics and nature.
