  • This song was written by Cynthia McQuillin in 1983, and originally sung by famous filk musician Julia Ecklar. This version was also sung by Ecklar, with guitar by Karl Franzen, Bass by John Land, and drums by Kurt Moore.
On July 16, 1969, the Saturn V carrying Apollo 11 launched from Launch Complex 39A with its eyes set on the moon. Today, November 16, 2022, that history is echoed as Artemis I launches as the first in a series of complex missions to return humanity to the moon. During this flight, the spacecraft will launch on the most powerful rocket in the world and travel farther than any spacecraft built for humans ever flown.
Bear my soul to touch the universe beyond.

This isn't to mention all the different people involved in the manufacturing, resource collection, processing, and other industrial work who go uncredited to this achievement despite also being necessary to the projects success.
While it took place within an arbitrary boundary, every little piece of assistance came from different corners of the globe.

umm if NASA didn't get their funding slashed post Apollo we would already have bases on every planet, full blown cities on the moon and mars, only the entire solar system is not ambitious enough, if we want to guarantee our survival as a species then we would need to expand into multiple solar systems, eventually much of the milky way and even parts of andromeda and the other smaller galaxies in the local group.

@@YoungAstronomicalReaserc-zf8zy It's a little more cynical than that, unfortunately. The Salyut stations were originally a military program; after it became clear that the Americans would beat the Soviets to the Moon, there was basically a crash program to turn Salyut into a civilian program and say "look at this! We weren't racing, this was our goal all the time! Silly Americans and their posturing."

The capsules. The lander. The computers. It may have even been more than 10,000 if we include the entire supply chain from extraction to manufacture to assembly.
