    Pro tip-go to military surplus stores in cities that have large military bases. You’re way more likely to find interesting stuff for better prices. “Fell off the back of the truck” and what not.

      Definitely not always the case, those are the places that like to jack up prices. Especially on cif gear. Imagine paying $60 you don't have for an ilbe pack radio pouch that already went out of issue but your cif receipt says you have one... If your wanna lose money, Saigon Scam's I mean Saigon Sam's in Jville is the place you wanna go.

    I grew up in the 70s and 80s, in L.A. there was no shortage of surplus shops there at that time. Most of them died off or became outdoor gear shops with a few bits of surplus in the back. I miss crawling the dusty shelves with that unique preserved canvas musk, digging through boxes of gear from previous decades. I often lament the passing of true surplus shops. New stores are packed with Chinese made nylon pouches and bags. I still search for the old school shops when I visit a new city, hoping to find the real deal. I just got back from Texas and was able to stop at a personal favorite in Fort Worth, Omaha's Surplus. That place will take you back, my friend!

      Omahas has been around for 70 years. You just have to pay attention to DSA\DLA numbers. As he carries some fake stuff. So know what it is you're buying and how to spot fakes.

    One of the best surplus store I found was tucked away in this hole in the wall plaza in a town called ft pierce in t he 80s , it was called gijoeys head banger, family run business. The man was a retired us army soldier, the same with his wife, they had their kids in the store with them, I guess they were babysitting them. He made the whole family dog tags on his machine. While he was doin the typing on the tag machine, he yelled my name, I went , here, he motioned me over, handed me my tag, freshly printed, and said, you turn to make one. I froze, me , I said , yes, and with his help I made 2 sets for my sons. What a memory, both of my son served, and both came back. That day my kids decided to join the service, cause of that man at gijoeys ..

    You can find some great stuff in this store. If you live in Massachusetts. I recommend the Stoughton mass Army Navy store. The pricing is great. They will have about 10 MA1 jackets on the rack. The t shirts are a great price as is most of their products. I have had my m 65 jacket since college. 1987. That is one well made jacket for sure. If anyone knows where I can get authentic army/nylon sleeping bag please let me know. Army Navy said they can not sell them anymore due to some political reason.

    The problem is Alpha Ind have not made military jackets for 10-15-20-25-40 years depending on the type of jacket. Alpha now days makes over priced fashion versions of the jackets they once made in USA now in CHINA with crap quality. It is extremely hard to find good originals in Surplus Shops or Online. See those new commercial tags on those jackets? Those will run you if you are lucky $85 to $150. Some stores go into the $200 range and they are the CHINA Alpha garbage. Alpha sold out the American people and are gouging the same with overpriced products made in the 3rd World.

    • @joelstatosky1817
      @joelstatosky1817 Год назад

      Literally, which is why I go the extra mile to find stuff that's truly vintage. The quality is just better, especially compared to these expensive reproductions. I've seen m-1951 reproductions that are $600, it astonishes me. Why get the reproduction when you can get the real thing and cheaper?

  • @Milkman3572000
    @Milkman3572000 Год назад

    So they look stylish in Boston. In fly over country they Work and are stylish. Hunt/Fish/ outdoor work and look good going to Wal Mart. The M1951 is a Great OVERCOAT if you ever find one. Designed to wear over your other gear. Like the M65, they have a removable woobie type liner, except they are longer, around your knees.

  • @chicagopapi6152
    @chicagopapi6152 6 лет назад +4

    How could show the M65 trouser liners and jacket liners but not discuss them? Oh come on now, they are both well worth mentioning and seriouly worth buying TBH, most especially for people who live in very cold weather states/cities/towns.

    You can find these in any military surplus store, everywhere. But this store is just a fraud, selling surplus 5 times their values for wannabe hipsters who think they found another unknown vintage store... Go to a real small military surplus in any town and you'll find your "super rare" MA1 jacket for 25$. But the hype around the vintage pieces need to stop, it's military quality, stitches will pop out in under 3 months...

    • @jhlee116
      @jhlee116 6 лет назад +32

      Paul Escudier agreed store is a fraud; nothing "surplus" about it. everything there is rothco level sweatshop manufacture. Can't tell you how many times I've walked into the store hoping that maybe this time there might be any real surplus items only to walk right back out. I don't mind they sell these items (selection of dickies and timberland is quite nice) but to call this place a surplus store is a shame. Not really a surprise, but this piece is just a glorified ad for Alpha Industries

    Prices for Alpha garments are outrageous. An M65 jacket upwards of $150!! First one I got in '74 was $15, bought some on base at clothing sales for $25 in 1990s. Maybe because true Alpha stuff made in US, not China.

    Never support a surplus as they rip off the military personnel .
