    The pointed cuff with Velcro tab is for the mittens. They keep the cuff over the mittens to keep out the wind and cold.

      Even without gloves, the points keep you warmer by covering the blood vessels on the top of your hands. Kinda like fingerless gloves, but not as dorky.

      @@Daniel_Verhey There is plenty of lore on this stuff out there, but it seems buried in very small corners of the internet. I'm glad you went into detail, and we all could well contribute more to the obviously elaborate tale of how these interesting pieces of (garment) equipment were developed. I can tell you are into it because you went out and got originals.

    Always nice to see other young vintage military clothing enthusiasts like me. I've mostly been into field jackets like the M-43 and its successors, but lately I've been getting interested in flight and tanker jackets.
    A bit of trivia: the M-51 is featured in the 2017 movie Baby Driver towards the climax.

    I served in the Marines from 79 to 85. We wore ERDL pattern cammies left over from Vietnam in boot camp, with a starched sateen cover, black bloused boots, web belt, white t shirt. M65 jacket was also sateen, but it was issued gear, not owned. I kept mine anyway, lol. The hood on the m65 is large enough to fit over the steel helmet. As someone mentioned, the velcro cuff extension was for the D3 black leather gloves with wool liner. Later we switched to woodland cammies. Woodland m65 came along after i got out. A movie that has the m65 is my bodyguard.

    Nice collection & great vid. Most famous M-65 movie ref apart from Taxi Driver is Rambo First Blood's opening scenes. Black dyed M-65's where also worn by Delta Force for the 1980s hostage rescue mission. A few rare photos on the net show them wearing the jacket with blue denim jeans, leather boots + black wool watch caps. An iconic combo that will never die!

      @@Daniel_Verhey Stocks of original M65's are virtually non-existent now outside of USA so I'm jealous you can still buy one. Got rid of my original back in the 1990's when Goretex was all the rage and I regret it! Great choices. You can also get A2 (USAAF) or G1 (Naval Aviator) flight jackets (fairly original patterns) from places like Aero Leather in Scotland (they have wonderful stuff like British WW II style wool sweaters, or beautiful leather boots, or Gibson and Barnes (which sells helmets and jumpsuits, oxygen hoses, and of course these great leather flight jackets, etc. to the pilot community). About the sleeve on the Army jacket - I can see I am not the only one dropping comment - the triangular pull out is for Gloves or Mittens. This can adhere to the back of your gloved hand, making a more solid protection against cold intruding into your garment up your arms. Since this is easily stowed and ready to go, I'd say this is clever. I love my Alpha Industries M65. The collar doubtlessly is like this to make access to the light hood really easy. Those Great Coats are amazing.

    Great vid. I think you should try and get yourself a British Army SAS smock in DPM or MTP.
    Great items to own, but extremely practical too.

    I mostly wear foreign stuff-JNA M77 parka, Romanian wool trenchcoat, Bundeswehr field shirts. I used to find it cheap at Fleet Farm. Now I tend to buy online, usually from Varusteleka, because they list the original metric sizes of everything. Surplus in American media is biased American, but if you're looking for practicality or fashion, there's a whole world of surplus out there.

    It is easy to get the US/Canadian wool shirts, thick with two chest pockets. Was used in Canada up to the 80s I picked up what I thought were some M-1951 pants similar to the ones I wear, but these had a button fly and the back pocket flat hide the pocket button; do you know what era these are? Are they just early M-51s? Used to have a fishtail parka and want one again, as well as an OD M-65 and liner. PS: AVANT magazine from France has an entire issue on military clothes.

    Hi. New to the channel here. Very cool vintage military collection! The field jacket and the WWII greatcoat are awesome finds. I find some of these vintage military outfits to be very cool and fascinating. I think those 'all weather' trench raincoats are really cool as well. Those are still around today, but the vintage ones are probably hard to come by. Do you have one or have come across one?

    • @Daniel_Verhey
      @Daniel_Verhey  Год назад +1

      Thank you and welcome! Hmmm I might’ve come across one previously but I don’t have one. In my opinion your best bet would be either eBay, surplus stores that also carries vintage, or sometimes flea markets have vendors that sell vintage military.

    I like the WEP. A lot are very short. Yours is perfect. Didn’t know you could get a civvy version. I’ll look for one. Also like the Canadian battle dress jacket. They’re great in khaki denim. Nice and light and not scratchy. The German U Boat officers used to steal them off the British and wear em. They’d take them from soldiers from the N African and Italian campaigns. Just a bit of a FYI. They all look good on. Thanks nice selection.
