@@thomasandersen6719 My South London School went from the first year I attended in the mid 80s, when BNP racists would come into the schoo grounds and beat any black boys they found, to a few years later, we were all dancing to house music together. All the 'firms' disbanded in the early 90s
By the time these "poseurs and hicks" came to the King's Road, the Blitz and Club For Heroes were long gone. I remember chatting to Steve Strange at my flat above a well known store in the KR and him pointing out the ones he said he'd never have let in his clubs.
It's only a movement retrospect. I don't remember anyone claiming to be a "new romantic" not like being a punk, a hippy or a mod. It was just "trendy" or "fashion victim". I wager a lot of people in the video didn't even know what new romantic even meant.
Depends on geography. In the US, classifications we’re much more generalized (and historically inaccurate)we were either classified as “New Wavers” “Goths” or “Punks”… but in England, the New Romantics were very aware of their scene and nomenclature. Strangely, the term “poser” (or “poseur”) was an accepted name for the (British)New Romantics’ affinity for showing off their ornamentation…but in the US, the term “poser” ended up meaning (approximately)someone who was faking it… (preppy office worker by day, teased hair and eyeliner at the clubs). That’s just looking at those two areas. I’d be interested to hear other countries perspectives on their 80’s scenes…
If this is post Blitz Club(1979-81?), and a year or so before the football disaster someone mentioned below, this must be 1983 or 84. Nobody was really dressing like this by 1985.
God! Too have been old enough and lived in Britain (which by the way, half of all Americans 🤫 would rather by in 🇬🇧!! Even so....I was only 10 and grow up in rural North Carolina;)
I was living off the Kings Road during the 80s and was probably 8 when this was filmed. London was a pretty depressed placed to live back then, if you were poor. For the rich kids in chelsea, it was different and they didnt care.
Ignore them, if you like it, go ahead! Trust me, as the only goth in my Uni, a lot of them kept staring at me but some of the popular students did came up to me and compliment my outfit.🖤🦇
Different ones of these seemed to get the most inspiration from their look from a different souce, whether it be David Sylvian, the Human League,Siouxsie,Robert Smith or a host more.
Black people and arabs were there, but just not in these clips. The Worlds End estate in chelsea was already black and arab with working class white and irish, philipino, portuguese and south americans. Sutton Dwellings(estate just off the kings road) was also mixed by the time this video was filmed.
This video just needs some new wave background music playing xD
Being an 80s club kid was so much fun.
where are you from =
@petetestube2904 made in chelsea
i was a punk when i stole sex pistols fan club letters as a child
and you ?
@petetestube2904 but why are you asking me this when it's about 80's club kids and wanting to know where they are from ?
I love it !!! They look like cartoon characters.
Thank you for posting this video, I wish I was one of these creative individuals, Britain's last youth movement.
You didn't hear about the rave scene then?!
@@annother3350 the rave scene was all about taking drugs to last the whole night..it was not about creating anything
