Camden and the market was a bohemian, multicultural space with an eclectic array of stalls selling artisan and second hand treasures. I lived in Kings Cross and loved to walk down the canal to the lock at the weekend.
Notice how people seem relaxed and fairly quiet, and a bit weary of the camera. Everyone seems to make alot more noise now specially when a camera is put in front of them.
Wow I actually worked on that flower stall around that time (1987), the guy that I worked for is in the video unfortunately I’m not in it but what a great video!! Thanks man!!
Blimey, 80s fashion looks pretty drab in this clip. But great footage of Camden market. So nostalgic! Used to love going there every week! And Dingwalls!! Loved going to gigs there.
It won't be long before it vanishes completely, Brixton, Northcote, Tooting to name a few. Councils, corporations and developers are all pushing traders and residents out.
@BingoBet-It-AllBeaver When did the tourists start visiting Camden, early 2000s? Went there in the late 80s. Reminded me of a cross between Amsterdam and San Francisco. Remember the hippy and his electric guitar, playing outside the underground station.
Best yime there in early early 70's. Roundhouse, Chalkfarm, just up the rd and huge squatting scene and alternatives doung music, arts, helping obtain housing working with the council, first health shop and cafe ran by a guy called Catweazle who cycled around India in the 60's. 6 pm news did a feature on the police brutality which the local alternatives filmed. Had an old war siren set up in what was Prince of Wales Crescent that was turned on when the 'meat wagons' (police vans) turned up and everyone piled into the street to stop them doing their dirty work and filmed them. Was truly great. Left us alone but eventually houses knocked down by the new corporates, everything commercialised and ruined. 80's lost it 90' tried reviving but for many it just became another mass produced same old same old. Shame.
It wasn't any safer then than it is now. In fact worse. The crime rate back then was dire. I speak from personal experience from living in London in this era.
@@person.X. Agreed. What is it with all this fake nostalgia these days? I hung out in Camden a lot during the '80s and it was rough; night time in London was definitely NOT safe at all during the '80s, far safer now. Nor was it really affordable, not sure where that myth came from. I lived in a crummy bedsit back then since that's all any of us could afford. Property prices were already rocketing up from around '85 or so
@@JohnnyFriendly Y the 70s and 80s were appalling for crime in London. It started to improve in the second half of the 90s and is now better than ever for most people. In those earlier times burglary, car theft and muggings were much more common. These days the crime is more concentrated. In the area I grew up in things seem pretty tough for black boys with gang culture, stabbings etc. But generally things are much less edgy. And to my eyes at least race relations seem to be vastly improved despite all the media hype from right and left.
@@JohnnyFriendlyIt was a bit more affordable, London rental costs as a proportion of income have increased massively - but it was never 'cheap'. And yea it was rough. This is footage of the high street .. and bit of the lock .. shame there isn’t actual footage walking around the markets especially from a Saturday or Sunday .. missed opportunity
Here's a brilliant video of a day in the life of Camden Market and lock in 1995. It really captures the vibe back then, including interviewing some stall holdersruclips.net/video/rpI5EjQXHTw/видео.html
No fat people, everyone looks happy and healthy, people actually dressed well, no flares, Camden use to be a wonderful place before the miserable drug taking grunge hippies infested and ruined the place in the 1990s thank god there gone now,
@@admiralackbar9307 I was going to say the same thing -- not a single fat person to be seen. People definitely looked fitter, healthier, more stylish, happier and more engaged with their surroundings. I noticed that the men looked more masculine and normal too. It's probably because they were more physically active then. Gosh, this video shows how much society has declined since that time. People's heads are buried in their iPhones now.
When London belongs to real londoners, that's when everybody wants a bit, cause we create magical excistances to live in, and learned tolarance with empathy for good peoples
It used to be the place to go for all things Goth and Alternative, but the heart has been ripped out of it now, and it is full of Cheap Chinese tat being punted to disappointed tourists.

Funny seeing my old flat...
Nostalgia.
I remenber this 'version' of Camden Town so well. Was so much part of my life. Loved it
pro tip: you can watch movies at Flixzone. Been using it for watching all kinds of movies lately.
@Miller Stetson yea, I have been using flixzone} for months myself :)
@Miller Stetson yup, I have been watching on flixzone} for since december myself :D
Wow, it's already changed hugely since then (35 years ago). There's some monster 'mullets' in this film footage! lol Gotta love the 80's!
I've never seen camden town look so clean! Great video!
The fashions remind me of ‘Rita Sue and Bob Too’.
4:58: Bless that lovely, little boy running along in front of his father. He looks full of joy, scrambling freely up the street. :)
He would be about 40 now in 2024

Was there a lot of goths and punks in the night ? Or they were everywhere ??
The old days now the golden days.
I was going to guess 1986 and then saw the date was 1987. I was there most weekend around 86/87.
Who remembers 'Compendium'? That was a gas! Wow - Camden way back when!
Great piece of film. Still more or less as I remember it from the late 70s.

I must have been selling on the stables market that weekend
I spent most Saturdays down here in 86/87.

when some upstart decided to change it, it lost its soul to a great degree
Yes 🙌
Camden died in the early 90s, it was ruined by the grunge hippies, and it never recovered.

1980's squatting scene around Malden Rd / Chalk farm was pretty good too. Been there done that😁
Compendium Books, Dingwalls. It was ab fab in the early 70s. Today, it’s a trash heap.
Back when London was safe and actually somewhat affordable to live in. In fact that was broadly true up to 2008 or so.

Look at how slim they were. No Frappuccinos back then.
Wow, it look messier than now.
Used to be there everyweek end
No stupid smart phones, no fat people
People smoked and ate less.
They were also tougher and did a lot more walking or played more sport
People's dress sense has definitely improved since then.
I lived in London in the eightes in my youth. It was such a great and peaceful city back then. Look at it now? Shame.
It doesn't have half the character it has now.... But how much cleaner was the lock then
They had a night market on Friday in Mornington and I said, No way. All distilled olive oil, pink soaps and rainbow catches.
LOL, you really got into it.
Thetan - "Not My Fair Lady."
Could have been...
Camden Town wasn’t so crowded in the 1980s. The streets were not so busy, like now.
