This is one of the movies that I turned off and have never gone back to watching because many things in it, while not necessarily "true" in THAT instance, were things I saw happen and dealt with when I was Explosive Ordnance Disposal in Iraq or when I went back to Iraq as a DoD contractor. The team leader, and his attitude/actions, etc, were "loosely" based on a guy in the career field. We KNOW this because after the movie came out he actually stated it, and, got ROASTED by other techs for it. But yeah, out of control team leaders, supervisors, officers, etc, trying to get themselves and the team killed? Happened. Team members having that "should we frag the guy or not" conversations? Yep, happened. Contractors running around the country doing dirty stuff? Happened.
Sure, some things were embellished so the movie was more interesting to watch. But yeah, too much actually is true to what some of us actually encountered to watch the movie.

Murphy (of Murphy's Laws) was bad enough. I'm not sure if they moved the statue of Murphy from Stumpneck to Eglin when they changed the location of the school or not, but, we prayed to Murphy because he could strike at any moment and usually did. There's a reason our motto is, "Initial Success or Total Failure".
But to then have your Captain pulling boneheaded moves like trying to dismantle a mine in the middle of the cache that we had zero tech on? Yeah, he did that among other things. Being the unit buddy care instructor, I got to bandage him up. That was the straw for many of us.

😑 This is one of the greatest character studies of all time. It really drives home the point that while there are millions of people in this world who simply are not army material, there are quite a few others who are nothing BUT army material. Unless they are out there saving lives by putting themselves in jeopardy, they slip into a depression caused by naturally low adrenaline levels that can only be elevated by placing themselves in life & death situations.

"This guy would have been sent for mental eval ages ago."
Right. Because it's a perfect world where everyone does what they should do and the bad apples are taken offline and... oh wait... nvm... because if that were true we wouldn't get videos of bad cops on a daily basis.
I had a SNCO knowingly put 4 of his techs into the ICU after we told him the op was bad and he flat said the op WOULD happen. HQ investigated. An E-6, one of the three people who told the SNCO it was a bad op, was found to be at fault by the investigators, the SNCO got promoted to E-9 and moved to HQ.
But sure, that team chief would have been sent for a mental eval.

@@Bill_pierrewell he is, the army can't be picky. And such dudes do have their uses in the military. Now, this is a movie whose sole purpose is to tell a story/narrative and with compelling/provocative character. And what we know is that this character is loosely based on a real soldier. So some truth in it, and worse in reality.

The bombs can be activated several ways and it’s shown in the movie. You have some that are set to go off after a certain amount of time, some that go off when pressure is applied to a trigger mechanism like something you step on or drive over, bombs that are remotely detonated by someone using some sort of electronic signal, and bombs that go off if another requirement is met. There are a lot of different ways to do it.

    • @mgass1354
      @mgass1354 3 месяца назад +4

This is correct. But in Iraq, many of the devices were command detonated. This is why it was so hazardous to the EOD techs. The bomb suits, as I understand it from techs from the later eras, were upgraded from 5lb to 10lb of high explosives. Basically, if you were standing next to a device that had 10lbs of HE or less, you could survive the blast. Over 10lbs, however, and it just changed it from a closed casket to an open casket. It's the very reason I refused (whenever I could) to wear the darn thing. 100lbs of kevlar reducing visibility, mobility, endurance, just to HOPE that you got an open casket? Just no.

My grandfather was a royal engineer who did 2 tours on bomb disposal in london in late 1940-early 41, during the worst of the blitz. Thats a whole year of bomb disposal. Sometimes they cleared german bombs that could take down a whole block of buildings. It completely destroyed his nerves and he ended ww2 in and out of hospital with severe stomach ulcers (which had no effective cure back then) and ‘nerves’. He fought in france in 1940 and in north africa too. He drank an amazing amount and he could be frighteningly volatile. It wasnt until long after he passed away that people started to talk about ‘ptsd’.
I could never really follow the point The Hurt Locker was trying to make: are there difficult and semi-crazy people in the military? Yep, i served with a lot. Is war bad? Yep. Neither point is really new. I think Cherry is a much better movie.

I served in Mosul Iraq during the surge I was 1’st eng battalion 1’st Infantry Division or 12B my job was to find the bombs or IED’s and secure the area for EOD to come out and dispose. There are a few different types of IED’s that’s a part they didn’t do to bad with. I think my company still has the record for finding IED’s in Mosul. oh we definitely did not go out in Humvees we had mine resistant vehicles and they worked phenomenal.

People, do you have any thoughts on becoming a Patron of a reaction channel? Yay nor nay?
I'm not quite there yet, but I'm seriously considering becoming a Patreon supporter of a reactor, and I am leaning towards Dasha's Channel at the moment. I am on the fence right now, so I'm happy to hear thoughts on why it is a good idea or a bad idea.
I like authentic reactions because I have always loved movies. Introducing friends to movies that I loved has always been fun. Seeing someone react to a favorite film is the closest thing to seeing that movie again for the first time.
I have not decided yet, but I realized yesterday that I almost NEVER watch Netflix, but I pay them $15.49/month. I probably watch 1 show a month on Netflix. However, I watch RUclips every day when I'm not too busy and I often watch various reaction videos. When I'm done with my responsibilities and turn on the TV, my go to is RUclips, so why am I paying Netflix? Why not support an individual instead? That makes sense to me.
So far, my favorite movie Reaction Channels are: Popcorn in Bed, Dasha Reacts, and Nick Reacts. These Channels match my style the most, but there are others that are good as well. I'd say those are my Top 3. These three feel more authentic and they come across as good people.
There are other good reaction channels, but even if they're good the reactors appear to me to be less authentic or people that I could not sit down and have a beer with due to conflicting personalities. (Mary Cherry, for example. She comes across as too judgmental).
Of my top 3 Channels, PiB is huge already and gets tons of support. That by default has me leaning away from Cassie's Channel despite it being probably the standard bearer of movie reaction Channels. Nick Reacts is the smallest of the 3, but I'm leaning more towards Dasha Reacts because Nick's choices of movies & shows aren't quite as good as Dasha's.
So that's where I am at. If I did support one, I think it's going to be this one. My significant other isn’t a fan of reaction channels, but she likes Dasha Reacts and PiB the most of them. She doesn't have a favorite between those two. A rare agreement between us! :)
Anyways, I think I know what I'm going to do, but I am open to hearing thoughts on this. Worth it or not?

4:20 I wouldn't say he's trying to prove anything, I think at the beginning they said he was a Ranger or MARSOC before joining EOD aka bomb squad. All of which are very well respected and have very tough training but both Rangers and MARSOC/Raiders are US Special Operations forces and while neither are tier 1 they're both very well respected and out of all the US Special Operations units/groups they're both known for being the craziest and the Rangers motto is literally "Rangers Lead The Way" so that's probably just them portraying that he's seen a lot of action and this is nothing and/or he doesn't care if he dies

    • @mgass1354
      @mgass1354 3 месяца назад +3

Well, I can confirm a few things here...
An 82nd Airborne Ranger and I (EOD) had a discussion while I was in Iraq. He wanted us to go jumping with them, like, out of a perfectly good airplane. I told him he was crazy for jumping out of perfectly good airplanes and I would stay in the minefields. He told me I was crazy. Moral: We were both batsh*t crazy.
As for death? If you're doing those jobs, you likely have come to grips with your mortality. So doing "crazy things" was (in the case of when you were home or out on the town) just living life to the fullest while you had it and while at work it was just doing your job.

If it is, "well, that's not how this would have been handled. By the book, you would do it X, Y and then Z"... that's correct.
That doesn't mean that there weren't people like that team leader in the field. There were and things weren't always done by the book. That's the entire point of this movie; team leader does stupid stuff. And yes, that has happened in the past and I'm sure still happens.

I've seen people say that soooo many times. "but that's not how it would be because (insert here)". And they are right IF the team leader is following the book.
"they wouldn't have gone out without a security force!"
Probably true at that time and being Army EOD. Except, I travelled all over northern Iraq in a two-man humvee without any security force whatsoever. But then, the AF didn't treat us like children.
"they would have used the robot"
It was my era of EOD that got all the gee-whiz gadgets as first gen tech to include the robot. We didn't use the thing. It was a POS and by the time we got it set up we could have had a guy down range, the situation recon'd, back to the safe area, and already setting up tools.
"but the whole point of the robot is to keep EOD safe!"
O.M.G. We knew our own mortality and the job we signed up for. If that day is our day, so be it. It's how we were able to do the job and NOT worry about "being safe". It's also how we WERE safe, and I'm now an old man, because we were focused on the job and NOT other things, like, you know, dying.
It's not that movie is "inaccurate". Everything the movie brings out DID happen. Maybe not with an Army team, or in that locale at that time, etc. But yeah, idiot team chief? I had a few that tried to kill us. I had a SNCO KNOWINGLY put 4 of his techs in the ICU AFTER he was told by 3 of us the op was bad and people WOULD get hurt if not die if he let it continue. He did.
