Go into an antique shop. At least here in the US, it used to be common to mix uranium into paints. Fiestaware dinner sets before 1972 are an infamous example. There's also uranium tiles, which can actually be found in some public places such as Los Angeles Union Station.
14500 battery is a standard and easy to find. Noob :p I really like it better than the 9v rechargeable in the older non-plus model. It last longer and is lithium so no problems swapping it out for a higher capacity one later on if you want, though it already lasts really long. I use this meter for tracing down local sources on my daily walks. You sit in one of the parking lots of those places with the business suites that have one of those cheap clinics/dentist offices set up in in USA and you can hear spikes on the meter sometimes from no shielding on the Xray imager. I remember one that actually had it right by the window facing the street. You could detect the xray emissions out to the street. Not good for you or the electronics and other stuff to be around that too much all the time (fine for short time like at airport).
As a vintage watch collector, Radium and Tritium luminescence led me on a interesting seperate journey to study radiation. I also live near a nuclear plant and are about 30 miles from Ottawa IL where the Radium Girls story took place. If you are intersted I highly recomend watching the 1986 documenatry Radium City which can be rented on VEMO for .99 cents. It's interesting that they use a glass tube instead of the typical metal SBM-20. Also appears that it can be user replaced after clipping the zip ties which is a nice.
The battery (cell) used in this meter is a standard AA cell, rechargeable Li Ion. In a pinch you can use alkaline or Lithium cells. ie. Energizer if recharging is not available.
Thank you for this video. I bought one a couple of months ago to have with my Radex Geiger counter. It is easy to use and works very well. I bought a test card and some trinitite glass from the first atomic bomb explosion from United Nuclear, and some uranium ore samples off EBay. They are fun to play with. There is a lot of safety information on the United Nuclear website regarding handling and storing uranium ore samples. And a LOT of information on radiation on bionerd23 RUclips channels. There are places she shows that have normal background lever more than 100 times what we have due to radioactive minerals in the ground. Only enough the people who live there do not have elevated cancer rates and they don’t know why. One of the comments on this video mentioned getting elevated readings around dentist and medical offices. I’ll have to try that out. I have not heard the multiple clicks with mine, but I think there are times when a cosmic ray and also as you said a solar flare cause a cascade of particles to reach the ground. Check out radiation accidents on Wikipedia. For the price of this detector it is not a bad idea to have one. Radioactive materials are shipped all over the world and if there is an accident in your area you can see immediately if you are being affected.
I took this meter up in an aeroplane with me and its fascinating seeing the dose. I did log it, I should try to show the data. I will do as you suggest and walk around with it and see what happens!
Your correct Am-241 found in smoke alarms gives off a 60kev gamma ray for every decay of an alpha particle. However this energy is in the x ray spectrum of energy and so your detector is very inefficient in detecting low energy x rays which is why Your not detecting much.
I just ordered one of those Geiger counters the day that you posted this video. I can’t wait until it arrives. And was there a usb charging cable in the box because I didn’t see it. My nickname is weird because I’m from georgia the former Soviet Union. There are a lot of radioactive watches and scrap electronics parts which contain radioactive paint that’s why I bought it
If you live down in Cornwall one of these could earn you a few quid as there is quite a few abandoned uranium mines. Uraninite rocks sell for good money to collectors.
I wanted to check something I found on the internet is possible convert x-ray in to electricity and use this energy for charging for example, if you put the device on some converter to a radiation source he could charge it
I ordered one of these. I wonder if I should have stepped up to the 320 or 500. I am anxious to learn and use this device. A guy I was talking to had purchased one and said it's a real eye opener as you carry it with you and measure things you encounter in your daily schedule.
@@backofficeshow Well, honestly, I don't know enough to tell you. I noticed, after the shipping alert, that the other models had a couple more features. It wouldn't have hurt to pay a little more if the quality is better.
Nice. I was expecting it to be a bit cold war Russian inside. I've got a GQ EPROM programmer. Same logo too. Bananas & camping gas lantern mantles are radioactive.
Hey there when u opening the case u could of tested the American then and get it very close to the tube cuz then the reading would be amazing u would see the difference with the case on and off plus i live in london o ordered mine it will come in 4 days cant wait thanks for the video..😁
I've literally been playing with my detector again, but in an aeroplane! I'll make a video about it when I'm back, not much footage of it in use, but we can review the data!
No it actually is for earphones and that's all it ever was, the data output on these is sent over USB, it's also how you download the log file from the counters internal memory. On the older screen less GMC-200 it was misrepresented as a data jack but was still really only a audio output, all the software did was listen to the line input from it to detect the count rate and it wasn't very good. I would frequently use my GMC-100 back in 2012 that way with earbuds on and the unit stashed in my pocket while riding bus.

It's probably ok as long as you don't eat the glass 😂
Many lamp mantles were made with thorium salts too.
I better stop using them to brew tea
All of the different graph settings and modes remind me of setting up a TI-83+ to plot.
I need to investigate some videos on this

Does gmc-300e plus still has any advantages over newer gmc-300s? worth modifying it with soviet SBM-20 or other tube?
It's hard to say, they will not confirm if it can measure Chernobly

I can see from your nickname you're the person to ask does this mean that my testicles are receiving a much higher dose than I'm measuring 😂😂
Mr.Microcuries actually it’s not. It detects low energy X-ray just fine.

Your pronunciation of Granite is the highlight of this video.
I will have to watch it myself to hear it 😂
backofficeshow you say Gran-ite (like you would pronounce Stalagmite).
Is your unit still working ok? Just bought one myself.
If you live down in Cornwall one of these could earn you a few quid as there is quite a few abandoned uranium mines. Uraninite rocks sell for good money to collectors.

I know it depends on the intensity of the radiation but it is still possible
The bulb itself is an actual geiger müller tube.
Don't recall how it actually works tho
Magic. We need not understand why more than that 😂

How can i buy one and Ship it
Does it detect Alpha, Beta and Gama Rays?
A very informative video. Thanks.
I have one of these which I bought to measure the radiation from my uranium glass collection, great fun!
So how do I know how it's measuring gamma vs xray?
You need a source for those, put it through an airport scanner
Used to wear personal gamma detectors at a previous job, when they bleeped I used to crap my pants :)
I can imagine! It's amazing stuff isn't it? Scary!
can you upgrade it yourself I was curious if you have knowledge

Only the older mantles as well as lesser known import varieties are still radioactive. Most now are crappy and aren’t. Not as bright.
