  • A short film about how social media and its pressures can impact self-image and mental health. We are so much more than our appearance, or number of followers and likes.
This is a very personal topic to both me and the actress, Lucy. Self-image and mental health something we're both really passionate about. This is our interpretation based on our experiences with social media and its impact on our mental health and self-image.
Our generation is the first to 'grow up' with social media, experiencing both the positives and negative sides of it (which in my opinion definitely overlap). It's not easy to balance this and see it from a clear perspective, judging what's helpful and harmful, to filter the content we are exposed to. Because of this, it's too common that we feel a massive amount of pressure to live up to what we see on social media, which isn't always a depiction of reality, and I believe that this is part of the reason why mental health problems, particularly eating disorders and body dysmorphia are so prevalent within our generation. I think it's so important that we begin to take responsibility for this, by educating one another and the future generations, who will be growing up in this landscape most likely with even more pressure placed on them, on these topics - so we can all be kinder to ourselves, be empowered by who we really are and embrace life.
Be More is an organization committed to teaching youth the importance of self-esteem and mental wellbeing, and examining the role that social media plays in their lives. Constant, uneducated exposure to social media is creating an epidemic of kids with poor self-image, high levels of anxiety, and under-developed relationship skills. By creating a community of support, encouragement, and empowerment through our in-school curriculum and digital campaigns, Be More teaches kids how to build each other up and prevent negative conversations and behaviors that often lead to poor self-esteem, eating disorders, anxiety, and many other mental health issues. We offer in-school curriculum, community events and digital resources to teach teenagers about social media literacy, self-esteem and positive self-worth through evidence-based mindfulness practices.
