A trip here is on my long bucket list.
I often hunt on skis. I hunt grouse of various types and ptarmigan here in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories of Northern Canada. I was a firearms instructor for a few years. I do hunt birds with various open-sighted lever action rifles, but only with a close, solid backstop. And there's almost guaranteed nobody else out here. But it would still freak me out to still just shoot at the sky.
Do these guys use frangible bullets? Is it just normal operations there?
Still, there is something magical about skis, rifles, hunting in that all (short) day golden light and crisp air. No cabin for me, but a nice canvas tent with a roaring woodstove and a cozy cot is a very close 2nd best!
    Great video. Take care.

      Hi.
Normally we'll use bullets like the Sako Target or Lapua Scenar L. These are regular target bullets which means we have to foresee where the bullet might drop down. But with that said , in most places we hunt, your bullet wouldn't reach anything like houses etc. And we are not are very densely populated place.

In 2020 I was in Montana hunting Elk. It was -25 at the warmest was -17. Snow all week. My Sako AV with Swarovski scope performed flawless. My hunting partners had new Tikka and savage rifles both had magazines freeze.

You can clearly see why they are cold.
Look how thick the Swede's outer jackets are, this is what you need when it's -26 something thick as the outer layer. Those brits are dressed like it's -10 their clothes would work if they where moving around at -26 and getting some more body heat, but you have to be careful with more than -20 if you do heavy physical exertions you can actually breathe so quickly that you get frostbite on you lungs.
Swedes seriously have two kinds of jackets one for normal winter and one for when it's more than -20 and those jackets make you look like michelin man.
You need to remove any oil or grease on a gun when its more than -20 because the oil will freeze, that's why those rifles didn't fire.
Also use a thermos for water even if it's cold as it won't freeze.

David & Paul managed the cold with grace. It’s not that easy to just put more clothes on.

I've had my rifle freeze at -30C right before I shot my white tail last year. The bolt gums up and makes the primer strikes a little to light
