If you don't have a real hand to reference, you may have trouble learning this technique. I suspect it would be difficult to manipulate the keyboard, mouse, and/or stylus without hands.
Thank you for being so descriptive about the details going on at each step. In addition to learning about how helpful metaballs are for modeling, I learned just now that you can use g,x,x to move along the local x axis instead of the global, and that new information just rapidly changed the rate at which I can pose armatures. Your videos are thoroughly helpful.
Just what I needed. You have a very nice calm voice, it's easy to listen to. Also the mistakes you make are helpful for beginner, so that I see the solution for errors.
For now i've been finding these sculpting tutorials super difficult but, I remember that there was a time when a donut was really difficult to make too.
Thank you for this tutorial. I was taking an online course on character creation and the instructor completely skipped hands. For some reason, after modeling every other part of the body they just gave a download for a hand to connect with bool tool. It's a shame because otherwise the course was good, the body I made following along looked great. But now I've got a hand that I made myself that will go great with the body I made. Plus I never would have thought to use metaballs like that, the only time I've seen them used (I think) was for slime/liquids in early 2000s TV animation like Jimmy Neutron.
Update after trying it, after a couple tries it actually worked out pretty well. Thanks a lot! Ill keep trying and make the most beautiful hands in all the lands :P
This is like watching a bob ross tutorial... just add some blobs here, add some fine details there, done. me: *looks at own result* ... yeah that could work for a horror game :X
It's funny... I was just about to leave a comments saying that this dude makes me think of Bob Ross. It's just something in the voice and how calm he is.
Thank You Grant, there is a mine of information in this series for a newbie like me. I've always wondered what metaballs were when using other software now I know it's that they fuse together which is very powerful in sculpting. I'm loving Blender 2.8 such a powerful software, software has come a long way since I started and this is free which I find mind blowing. Thanks again for a lovely paced tutorial.
Yo, thank you so much for this. It was much easier to follow than others and really well explained. And it showed me how to make something I wanted not just a copy of something in a video 10/10
Really struggling with the hands but I think I finally got it somewhat down, decent enough for what I'm doing at least. Thanks for the video, these metaballs seems pretty cool!
I am LOVING it, looking forward to more episodes showing how to make decent looking quick to make characters for games using metaballs for base mesh. best regards!
Little tip here: You can change the resolution of the Dyntopo with Shift+D and enter the number of the resolution you want. For example Shift+D+10 then press Enter gives you the resolution of 10. With that you don't have to go to the Dyntopo panel and can save a little bit of time.
Aha! Exactly what I've been looking for I think! Will watch and follow this when I'm back at my machine. Still need to get 2.8 and am looking forward to trying it. Thanks!
Great tutorial.. came here from somebody doing clouds with modifiers and getting lots of intersections, so I thought: doesn´t Blender have metaballs. And YES! It´s such a nicely complete tool. I really need to start getting comfortable enough with blender for production.
Thank you thank you thank you. Just rediscovered meatballs. I've heard of them but didn't get the hype. I've been looking forward to your video over them. Edit: Okay, watched the video and that was helpful. I know that metaballs also have a 'negative' function to remove bits away. I think I have an idea of how that works though.
Awesome process explaining metaball step by step, Can you show me again how to call out the pie menu for the crease function? It looks like a difference pie style for blender's default, so wondering if it's a add-on? Thank you so much!
I've had trouble with booleans messing up the mesh around the seam in the past, I've had more luck with simply joining the parts with Ctrl-J and then remeshing with Ctrl-R working better, although it has the downside that it affects the _whole_ piece so isn't suitable if part of your mesh is already finished.
im very new, about day 4 of learning and ive used only your game ready axe videos and almost mastered baking, retopo, all the key shortcuts ect but here ive run into a road block when modelling my base mesh for my character, i know im almost 4 years late but i have a very important question regarding symmetry, when finished making the hand, what would be the best way to attach it to an existing body? mirror x axis and position then boolean operation to the body or is there a better way?
why is my mesh turning different colors (green first than blue after I redid the union) after I boolean everything together and go to sculpt mode? Nvm, the color went back to normal after I clicked the dyntopo.
I have a character model but it's split into multiple meshes and I'm trying to use Ctrl and + to add a boolean modifier to my mesh but it's not working what's wrong i just want to get rid of the edges
Can Nurb paths be parented to bones? My model has hair made out of curves but it is not parenting to the metarig even if I convert the curves to mesh. I have been battling for days now and dont know what to do.
At around 4:16 I got sorta lost. how did you make it more smooth like that? I rewatched slower and saw you were just using crease brush, is that what I need to get it to look like that? Won’t it just deform it tho?
OK, I got to the point of converting the metaballs to mesh, clicked the Sculpt tab, but the model stays grey, not red. Also, I've matches all your settings for brushes etc but my mesh isnt and doesnt Smooth finer. Thoughts?
Hey! I am pretty new to blender. Did some doughnut tutorial etc., but fell in love with sculpting pretty soon. Now, I am doing my very first character. Your videos help a LOT. Are you going to do a tutorial of sculpting the face? Thats pretty much all I am missing from your videos. You are awesome!
Thanks for all the awesome vids Grant :) just found your patreon too! You deserve so many more and now have one more lol also are you liking 2.8 more than 2.79? Or do you find yourself wanting to switch back?
Thanks very much that's very nice of you. I am really liking a lot about 2.8 but have to switch back every now and again just to keep things moving. Wont be too long before I'm only using 2.8.
When I asked my teacher what is a metaball good for, he said that it's possibly useless. Now you helped me understand what is it used for. Thanks!
good to hear :)
ok a bit late but even at a glance how does anyone think this is useless... merging spheres and cylinders seamlessly is a super valuable asset
Your teacher is useless
My time spent making monsters in spore is finally paying off

if you mess up your thumb like that you can use the lattice modifier to rotate it. it works like using a subdivide cage on your sculpted mesh.
good point :)
Thank you so much for making this wonderful, fascinating AND FREE! course, you've made my life xxx
When it started off with a pitchfork, i knew this was gonna be a good tutorial.
Nice sculpt. Hands are very complicated to draw/sculpt. I tried to box model hands and would extrude faces for fingers, it was a total mess.

in 2.8 you can use the posebrush to correct the thumb.
