I prefer frame by frame hand drawn animation, as sometimes onion skinning/rigging animation could look stiff and puppeteer like. It can look good, like Archer, but there’s also a stiffness that comes with it.
Exactly how i feel...Frame by frame makes the scene and characters more fluid to me more "Quality". Also hard to replicate by any one just jumping into animations...so preferably for skilled ones only. Good to set high standards for animation and animators and the market (Thats what I think).. the other hand..AI makes it somehow easier for newbies to just jump in and begin animating using rigs...Don't get me wrong..i am not saying people shouldn't learn..but I prefer people with high standards should join in..just to keep the animation world look less "Cheap".
I like how some frames in hand-by-hand animation could look "Off-model". It gives more charm to it. I realized it after i saw newest season of Totally Spies. Because of rig animation, one character looks the same all the time, unless using goofy face for purpose. Then i look at episode of Season 1 of Totally Spies, and it's "errors" make it loook very fresh most of the time.
1:02 that pen! Man, I'd never EVER be able to draw with that brick in my hands. 2D rigged animation has always looked so robotic to me. But I’m not sure if that’s due to the program’s limitations or the animator’s skills (though, honestly, I suspect it’s NOT the artist’s fault). I’m not an animator, but a comic book artist, a big difference. Still, it’s easy to gauge an artist’s skill level by their portfolio.
Well I understand why animation studios do seem to prefer rigging animations nowadays as it is cheaper to make. However, frame by frame hand drawn animation should not become a dying art. It should still be kept alive.
I would say that rigging is much, much older than 1988. Have a look at Lotte Reiniger Prince Achmed from 1926. It's a full-length feature by using cutouts. Beats even Disney's Snow white time wise.
Beautiful video. I didn't know that riging started in the late 80s. Forme riging is a bit difficult, since I use frame by frame animation. It is time consuming, but the results are most defenaitly worth it :)
This is why I spend so much time developing techniques and to capture frame by frame nuances using modern technology.

But this is insanely useful for reference points

I prefer frame by frame, yes it takes longer but it also improves your drawing skills.

Frame by frame will always be my favourite but rigging is less stressful and gives Animators more time
For me, Both ❤
If I were to make my own animated film I would like to use both methods.

Indeed. Frame by frame is beautiful, but sadly it takes so long to achieve that it can become unsustainable for single animators or indie studios 😔
I wish frame by frame was more used in western animation, it looks so much superior imo

Great video, answered many doubts and helped me making a few decisions I was dealing with

Frame by frame 😍🙋🏻♂️
This was a good review of both.
Frame by Frame is beautiful and more artistic, but it makes me lose my sanity cuz it takes so much time 😭
Whats the best free programm for rigging and frame by frame drawin? I Wanna do both, I tried Opentoonz but it doesn't run on my pc

Free?@@darkphoenix7284
Why krita didn't have rigging future
Gotta request it
Both are good i think
Good vid. Tnx!
I just realized for frame by frame animation I'am not bad at animating i'am bad at drawing
Rigging looks ugly and is super noticeable in almost all cases.
AI….
Bruh, what?
