Creating the Zelda title theme in just one day. Koji Kondo is a musical genius.
is there any fun facts on megaman music? I need it
Pokemon music please!
totally. the Zelda title theme is perfect.
+DidYouKnowGaming? Pokémon music!
+DidYouKnowGaming? Do Pokemon music!
Apparently Koji Kondo spends a lot of time listening to the music he creates to see if the would grow sick of it after hearing it over and over again. Now that's what I call dedication.
+TheLegendOfJoey well he designed it all specifically to be catchy and non-draining, and it definitely worked :) I love all his music.
*Listens to Saria's song on loop for an hour
Yep, he did a good job.
***** It is easy to forget? Does the music sound bland? No? Then Kondo did his job quite well.
+Sephiroth Hojo
I think that if you can make music that is hard that takes awhile to get tired of *and* make it unforgettable then you have a good soundtrack for your game.
+flameheadshero did the same here.
Koji is a effin genius!
Miyamoto, "Creator of Wii Music." Now that's the funniest thing I've ever read!
That's like saying Satoru Iwata, Technical Supervisor for New Ghostbusters II
I'm pretty sure he has a few bigger accomplishments.
*lol* all of it
Aonum's Nintendo band is called the "Wind Wakers" and they apparently put on concerts for Nintendo employees
I rather learn facts about gaming than anything I'm learning in school
+DavidParody I'm taking Game Development, so I'm learning those, too! :D
+LifeWulf Nice,I better be the first one to play your game( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
You'll totally be successful and have a good attention span...
+DavidParody same.
Awesome X Or what, you'll throw more Lennys at me?
Pls no, anything but that!
Zelda has the best music in any video game series ever.
cough,sonic,cough
+Bladimir Amaya can you feel the sunshine?
+Bladimir Amaya anyway, like he was saying. Zelda has the best music in any video game series ever.
I'm not that much of a LoZ fan, but I gotta agree.
katia managan yes,I'm burning
I *LOVE* the orchestrated music in Twilight Princess
the 25th anniversary orchestra has a twilight princess section that i just can't get over. it's so good. and ya the short "Don't you want you no more" medley for the trailer makes me cry tears of happiness.
ZackRToler same!
Shigeru Miyamoto: "You know, it's not necessary for a game to have a-"
Everyone else: "We don't care if it's necessary. We want it."
0:41 that reminds me of how the music changed during the part in Twilight Princess with Midna's Lament. that was so close to being one of my favorite moments in a video game. completely ruined because when an enemy comes near you the music switches to the generic fight music. totally killed the mood of the whole scene and I still think it's one of the biggest oversights in the series. they should have given Midna's Lament a higher priority to not switch music for combat.
+Chaster Mief And exactly the same when you're chasing Fi in Skyward Sword.
+Chaster Mief I haven't replayed TP and have a vague memory of the entire game excluding some incredible scenes. This was definitely one of them. I tried my best to just ignore enemies to little success.
+Chaster Mief Oh my god. That was such a powerful sequence that got completely ruined by the bloody combat soundtracks. If there's something I want rom editors to do right now is go and edit the sequence to fix this.
Given the crazy attention to detail in that game, I can't believe they missed that.
+Chaster Mief I totally agree freaken annoying and enemies appear every 3 seconds interrupting the music.
Reminds me of Sonic Unleashed and its combat music. The music was amazing in that game too
Shigeru Miyamoto - creator of Wii Music
I'm pretty sure he's done more than that, guys...
ROFL I heard he also created some game or games in the late 80's or something like that...
de4th1snt3nough
I think it was called
Mafia or something similar and also it was Italian but I'm not sure
Didn’t he make that green elf guy called zoldo?
And he made that game or whatever it is called Superb Maria Galaga or somethin?
I think he did at least.
IKR!? Give the writer of despacito a bit more credit!
You named your Link, "Sandwich"?
came here to say this lmfao
This music brings back so much memories.
Hi
+Rizz3n The music near the end, while he was talking about the E3 trailer for Twilight Princess, gave me goosebumps! I hadn't heard it for SO long, but I remembered exactly where it showed Link becoming a wolf for the first time. I watched that trailer SO many times and was so hyped for it! Twilight Princess is only my 2nd fav though, Skyward Sword being my first.
The music has always an integral piece of why Zelda is my favorite gaming franchise. It's a story in and if itself and can be very moving at times.
We can't forget about "Ballad of the Goddess" backwards!
+Sylvia Sylveon Wasn't this common knowledge from well before Skyward Sword came out?
EpicOdysseus Maybe? How would it be known without the SS music released?
+Sylvia Sylveon Haha, yeahhh. Everyone and their mother knew this. But thanks i guess ;)
Simon Rockstream Oh, ok. I didn't know that. Sorry.
+EpicOdysseus it is...
The theme played during the 2004 E3 reveal trailer for Twilight Princess is called _"Riddle of Steel / Riders of Doom"_ and is the theme from the 1982 Schwarzenegger classic Conan: The Barbarian.
***** I know. I'm just mentioning it because the video didn't, and I think it's interesting.
+Gaius Baltar Awesome music! I wish they would reuse it for future Zelda trailers.
+Gaius Baltar What? Why did Nintendo use that? wouldn't they have gotten copyright or something? I love the theme, I am just suprised it is not a zelda original.
+Gaius Baltar What? Why did Nintendo use that? wouldn't they have gotten copyright or something? I love the theme, I am just suprised it is not a zelda original.
Please, PLEASE do an episode on Pokemon music!!!
+Cyberpunk Alchemist Pokemon music.
TO UNVEIL THE SECRET OF THE LAVENDER TOWN WEIRD SOUND.
Dewford town
Lavender town theme
Yes please!
Kingdom Hearts Music PLEASE. Yoko Shimomura needs credit where credit is due.
If you don't count atlantics KH has some amazing music
+Tommy „tommy thekeyblademaster“ thekeyblademaster Atlantics is just Disney music and music in the disney style..
+rockyadriano2 talking about kh2 here and the ear bleeding version of under the sea.
Tommy thekeyblademaster Well that happens when you invite a duck, a dog and a teenager for a singalong in the ocean
+sidney mosley Yet again, Parasite Eve's OST is left in the dust...
Nintendo Music is simply fantastic.
tru
They always put so much thought into the music. I love it. Many themes from the Zelda series have little "secrets" in them, and many characters/settings have their own leitmotifs that make you feel a certain way... The music has to be one of the most important things going for this franchise. It's what gives it a sense of magic.
I'm glad, Kondo finally got his way, what an incredible soundtrack it turned out to be!
"Koji Kondo" sounds like "Cozy Condo"
I absolutely LOVE the piece in the beginning of Twilight Princess, and I wish they'd gone through with orchestrating the entire game. I think Twilight Princess deserved it more than Skyward Sword, honestly, it was much deeper of a game. The music is wonderful, don't get me wrong, but a full orchestra could have just brought it to life.
+Amber Rebecca Skyward sword had a beter story though
Never played a Zelda game, but this video makes me want to try one. Love the music throughout the video.
What the actual fuck are you doing with your life
Zelda is THE only Nintendo game series that has gotten it's own full concerts devoted to nothing but music from the series, sponsored BY Nintendo.
Final Fantasy, Kingdom Hearts, you've got some great soundtracks, but you'll NEVER top Zelda.
Wisest words ever
Dude final fantasy has that too it's called distant worlds.... Don't know about kingdom hearts
Well if you count Pokemon, they got their own full concerts called Pokemon Symphonic Evolutions
Triston Johnson
I'll admit I've never heard of either of those concerts, but have they been all over the US and Europe the way Symphony of the Goddess has?
nahor88 They went through US, Canada Australia, and Mexico.
I'm really glad they put the fully orchestrated music in skyward sword, it truly is beautiful.
If TP ever gets an HD remake, I want there to be orchestrated music.
It's been years since I've gotten into Zelda, and it's still some of my favourite music to date.
Thank you, sincerely, Koji Kondo. Really, you have no idea how moved I have been by this music. It's one of my main inspirations for wanting to produce my own music.
Oh man, as a musician myself and a fan of video games, I really appreciated this video. I hope that you guys make many more of these videos because finding out trivia and tidbits of how a game's soundtrack came to be is one of my favorite things ever. Video game music is so underappreciated these days and people just think that retro video game music is just random "bleeps and bloops", and that modern video game music can just be random compositions that don't stand out as works of art. Congrats on a fantastic video full of wonderful information and please make more of these.
Everybody is talking about how much they hate Jeff, and I'm over here actual enjoying Zelda music lore.
ikr
+Landon Wilson Why would anyone hate Jeff?
+Nikki Clark Triad People seem to think he's a blatant ripoff of PBG.
+Nikki Clark Triad hahaha xD
Really? I like both him and PBG. Both of them are unique
Oh Miyamoto, you're such a party pooper.
Don't forget that he designed the party in the first place.
Christian McCoy what party are you talking about?
+Yozhel Glez The Zelda and Mario party
+Christian McCoy Sounds like Miyamoto isn't the only party pooper.
+Yozhel Glez He poops at parties? o_O Where the door es open, and peoples can see and smells things?
1:10 Look at how proud that man is of his Luigi collection
The non orchestrated music in Twilight Princess and the orchestrated music in Skyward Sword were pitch perfect for the feel of their respective games, imo. The synthetic voices especially in TP matched the eerie, otherworldly feel of the Twilight realm, and the soaring strings in SS matched the feeling of lighthearted adventure!
I hope there'll be a Final Fantasy Music episode soon as well! 😃
Does anyone listen to the Zelda soundtrack that came with Skyward Sword?
I do in my car!
+MalikJC me too! It's so epic.
It was the only good thing that came with the game
+Pointless Box Yes! It's like magic to my ears.
pjuster2 I personally liked the Skyward Sword.
the best and most interesting did you gaming since it first came out. FANTASTIC JOB GUYS KEEP IT UP!!!
Very cool episode. I'm gonna look up some of these interviews later! As an amateur game dev, who tries to make their own music and graphics, this is really interesting. I know this episode is more than 6 months old, so I'm pretty late, but I'd love to see DYKG make more episodes like this.
Orchestrated or not, Twilight Princess has one of the best soundtracks ever.
Koji Kondo is the God of Video Game composers.
Miyamoto- creator of wii music 😆
So very, very cool! Thank you for making this video!
Pokemon music would be so very cool to know about.
SPACEHAMSTER IS AWESOME OK FREIND OK
I like PB and Jeff
You should do an episode on Satoru Iwata.
Yay, SpaceHamster!! Zelda music is so beautiful. These facts are so cool.
There is a fabulous fan made, fully orchestrated soundtrack to Twilight Princess called "Twilight Symphony!"
Great video.
To be honest i'm glad TP's music wasn't orchestrated, the artificial sound just suits the dark aesthetic of the game. Orchestrating that soundtrack would've just spoiled the feel of it.
sonicadv27 I think it could have served well in some places, just not for every moment.
The music in legend of Zelda remains some of my favorite of all time. I would say it was even a big reason that I decided to start playing an instrument in the first place. I love playing my favorite Zelda songs.
I can imagine their thought process in 5:21 :
- ok, we need some new footage for the last seconds in the video.
- Well I can just grab the dog in Ordon village and circle around the table for a couple of times, then i'll leave.
- perfect.
Wow, only 5 notes?! If only there were an entire scale system made of only five notes that is prevalent in East Asian cultures...
Robert Brandin Unfortunately, Balinese music isn't as marketable. We'll just have to settle for timeless classics with western harmony.
Pokemon Music!
But I would also love one for Kingdom Hearts music.
The music is one of the things I love about Zelda. It's amazing!
(and I have been thinking of trying on ocarina myself)
I guess Koji Kondo still wanted to use Ravels "Bolero" in a Zelda game, because the song "Bolero of Fire" in OOT was actually inspired by it. The snare rhythms are the same and the strings are kind of similar.
I'd like to learn some more about Pokemon music.
I drew the best hand drawn picture of Majora's mask in fourth grade. I showed my dad, he said it looked demonic so I threw it away.
What's interesting is that Zelda's Lullaby has been around since at least ALTTP, meaning they had to build the ocarina's notes around that song.
I love that silly music that plays when you witness the argument between the townsfolk in the mayor's office.
Do Pokemon music next!
Pokemon music all the way!
This was a fucking barrage of words that almost put me to sleep, BREATHE PLS !
I should look up interviews/reverse-engineering of the OoT Hyrule Field music. Seems really important.
Thank you guys for the informative video!
I respect Shigeru Miyamoto. But sometimeeee I swearrr. Not necessary? REALLY!? Your game sounding beautiful is not necessary?!
LuniqueKero The guy is a legend ,but sometimes he makes some backwards decisions.
There's more to it than that. They went with sequenced music so that it could transition seamlessly between different scenarios, like it did in Ocarina of Time. That's not really possible with pre-recorded music.
So what they mean is that it was not necessary to sacrifice the dynamic musical arrangements just to have orchestrated music.
LuniqueKero we are talking about nintendos biggest troll here
Zelda based DYKG are the best :3
I was waiting for discussion of the music in Link's Awakening! That has some of my favorite tunes, (and the game is centered around collecting different instruments.) Maybe in a part 2!
OMG!!!! I am so glad they had a fully orchestrated sound track for Skyward Sword. It had such an amazing score and wouldn't have sounded as good with synthesized instruments.
#Pokemonmucic
Pls make this happen
It won't because you spelled music wrong.
+Venawart mander Look. Pokemon's music is good, but in terms of "quality" (Music theory-wise, use of modes and a tad more complex chord progressions, etc.) Koji Kondo's music is incomparable to Pokemon's music.
Learn how to spell
I was exited and I didn't focus on My spelling.
+Venawart mander "Exited"
pokemon music!!
Zelda doesn't need orchestrated music, but Mario, that guy needs a band behind him, even when he's go karting
Ballad of the Goddess, Song of Healing, Song of Time, Main theme, Temple of Time, Windwaker theme, Full Steam Ahead, Zelda's Lullaby, Deku Palace and my personal favourite Song of Storms!!
hey what do you guys want on your pizza?
+Boooty Lunch Your boooty.
+Boooty Lunch sausage ;)
Penis!! A large, preferably green, penis.
more useless Nintendo facts. & XtrA cheez.
+Boooty Lunch Golf pants.
Mario music. Easy.
Also, Spacehamster, why do you pronounce "Kondo" like that? What did he ever do to you? :P
No
Just no
Pokémon music.
+Rafael Rodrigues Mario Galaxy.
Randal The Donut Pokemon rgby
+Joe Repp Well the original Mario theme was composed by Kondo himself so its another one of his master pieces.
+Randal The Donut I personally consider that the exception. Yes Galaxy has an amazing soundtrack, but over the entire series, I'd say Pokemon is better.
song of Healing still gets me. amazing piece
"Shigeru Miyamoto, creator of Wii Music."
SHOTS FIRED
So is this where we are at in life? Talking about Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask and show nothing but 3DS version game plays of it? You can't erase my childhood DYKG! The 64 was a thing! Music from those games with ALWAYS be translated in triangles for me, not R,L,A- Whatever! ( ._.)
I'm pretty sure the N64's controller had R, L, and A buttons.
It did indeed sir, but only the A button was needed to play the ocarina and using the triangle buttons to play the rest just felt like it was Zelda themed. I mean it was like triforce music. It feels weird playing N64 OoT for decades of my life and learning all these songs by heart a certain way then seeing it a different way. Like it is so recognizable, you could just draw it out on paper without writing the name and many people could tell you witch song it is. There are tattoos of the bars of music from that game for crying out loud....
I'm just salty I'm old. 1998 isn't that long ago... just..... 17... years.... ago...... *sobs*
+TheSasquatch33 if you keep hanging on to that logic. We'll never move on in videogames
They are called c buttons
not being able to read music does not make you less of a musician!! thats like saying because you can't read frech, you're less french even if you were born in the country. Many MANY musicians never bother with sheet music as for alot of cases it doesn't help them. I personally play by ear, along with many other like me. you don't see rock stars with music stands at their concerts do you? they have to memorize that. being able to read sheet music is a luxury at best. you in no way need it to be a good musician...you do however need it to easily convey a musical concept without playing that specific song to someone or a group of people....but still lol that dosen't make you less of a musician.
+ackly14 Amen! I have tried multiple MULTIPLE times to learn to read sheet music from multiple different teachers, and it just never stuck. I've always played by ear and it's never failed me :) It's like memorizing your favorite passage from a book simply by hearing someone else read it to you; you can repeat it anytime to anyone without having to have the book in front of you, and hearing someone else read it for you makes it so much more personal.
+ackly14 If you can play music by ear then I think it's more amazing than learning sheet music... and I have learned when I was in school. I think some teachers just don't understand, because they want everything done by the book and don't understand how to teach someone who learns by ear :/
A luxury at best? Are you serious? Reading music is extremely useful. The ability to read music also does not mean you have a music stand in front of you, that is session music. People read music to learn pieces and then perform it without the music. Don't discredit a useful skill because you don't use it.
Andrew Millar
in no way did i intend to discredit its validity in the music world! I simply wanted to make a point that it in no way contributes to weather or not someone could be considered a musician. saying its a luxury at best is in my mind absolutely true. it is a luxury, yes its also incredibly helpful for a lot of people, but to me its a luxury. yes i can read it, does it make me better at any given instrument? sure in some cases. is it imperative that i use it to play for fear of failure? no not at all. A.K.A. luxury. it may be necessary for some, i completely understand it, but to us play-by-earers, it can be more determent than good at times.
TL;DR its a luxury to some, and a necessity to others.
+ackly14 mmm yes and no. I play clarinet by sheets, and piano by ear. But i must say learning sheets can certainly increase your depth in understanding music, there's no doubt in that.
Why does that one shot of Zant walking kind of intimidatingly with the Twilight Princess make me want to play Twilight Princess again so much?
Such great videos! Keep up the good work, man! +1
I vote for a video on Pokemon Music.
POKEMON MUSIC!!!
bonus thing I found a few years back:
The opening to ocarina of time's music contains the mario 3 warp whistle jingle.
The music in Zelda is pretty much my favorite music in gaming.
+DidYouKnowVideoGames
POKEMUSIC OR I WILL END THE COSMOS
lol +DidYouKnowGaming
+Edgar ortiz
And another one will completely misunderstand the human interaction of humor. :)
+John Adams Would love to hear the inspirations of the more darker pieces, such as Ghetsis theme, and the power of Arceus theme.
kingdom hearts music or final fantasy music
Hi
I’m pretty sure you’ve heard this before if you’re watching this video, but did you know that the Ballad Of The Goddess is more or less Zelda’s Lullaby in reverse? Same with the Song Of Healing and Saria’s Song. I still think its really cool how you can reverse a great song and make another great song from what gets put out.
An Ocarina would seem rather Zelda-esque because it had already been in two games at that point! Both A Link to the Past and Link's Awakening featured an Ocarina, with Link to the Past's being a the equivalent of Zelda 1's recorder, and Link's Awakening's Ocarina having you use different songs to solve puzzles.
#PokemonMusic
poke man
Pokemon! My most beloved soundtrack for 17 years.
so thats why every sacred ritual involves music
Pokemon!!!
Wow you guys are really running low on ideas.
William Busman More Zelda stuff. More Nintendo stuff. Like we don't have enough of this kind of content already.
I appreciate in depth details over popularly known ones
I'm hoping for more specialized videos like this, let's get a Final Fantasy music one!
They have idead but just don't use them (I'm still waiting for that MGS video)
+Big “Fawful” Boss And Ace Attorney
Turtimos the Adolescent Mutant Warrior Are they gonna make a video on Ace Attorney? Awesome
Lost Woods is one of the simplest, yet one of the most addictive Zelda songs.
Koji Kondo is without a doubt the king of video game music. Not only did he do Zelda 1, LTTP, OOT, and most of Majora all by himself, he ALSO did all the mainline Marios from the first to 64, AND part of the Star Fox 64 soundtrack. ALL of this is ALL-TIME CLASSIC video game music! :D
You guys should do more music-related DYK Gaming!
The funny thing is, Skyward Sword actually has a slightly weaker soundtrack than the usual Zelda game, at least melodically. It relies too much on the orchestra to make the music epic, which makes the songs themselves weaker when not played in an orchestral setting.
+Link's AMV. I find that interesting , as many (such as myself) think it has the best soundtrack
I fail to remember any theme from Skyward Sword.. They weren't bad, just not memorable.
Yeah, I felt let-down by the songs in SS. Every time a new song was about to play, I expected to be moved the same way I had by previous Zelda game music. The melody just felt lacking to me. It's funny, but those songs with limited notes from OOT and MM are the most memorable to me. Nothing in SS can compare to the Song of Healing. And that fire song has nothing on the Bolero of Fire. IMO, anyway.
Is this serious... skyward sword has one of the best soundtracks except maybe tp or mm
Fis farewell and ballad of the goddess were tearjerkers
2:44 Hell, 2/3 of the band Genesis couldn't read music either, but that didn't stop them!
Pokemon Music all the way! Always wanted one from you guys about it.
Best tracks I have heard ever.
Mario music! (you're researching kondo now anyway :D )
And the music is one of my favourite things in Skyward sword! Glad they went orchestral!
Pokemon music is and will always be my childhood.
So yeah please do a video on Pokemon music.
I loved Twilight Princess's soundtrack, it's hard to tell it's not orchestrated. Whatever synthesizer they used sounds very good. I need to go listen to that music again.
Man, the theme for Twilight Princess trailer is awesome!
