DOB doesn't quite have it, though. The fear of the unknown is fear of potential, not personal-application. Before I see the creature reveal I am not worried of my greatest fear (spiders, I guess), I am worried about what might happen. Once the monster is revealed it is quantified and no matter how scary, it could always be worse (basically just whatever it is plus more teeth). Not showing a monster means it might be the WORST THING EVER, it is just that the filmmakers aren't showing it. Until the reveal it can draw upon some shadowy ideal of absolute terror, afterwards it is like: oh, the monster is a big lumpy thing with tentacles, eyes, teeth etc. Big whoop. Example: Cloverfield

they missed something. Exclusion: The fear that we are alone and isolated from our friends and families, that we are the only one outside the joke, or are in fact "the joke." Mr. wrong is the best example. while it might present itself as a comedy, it is a great Horror movie. the movie is all about exclusion. the woman meets a charming man who seems perfect, who then works his way into her life, befriends everyone in her life, and then takes over her life, becoming the driving force in it all with no one for her to turn to. Invasion of the Body snatchers, Stepford wives, these movies work of the fear of indoctrination, yes, but they also work on our fear of exclusion. that the world is somehow changing and we are left alone. Truman show, etc

I think that Dan has the most accurate analysis. You are the only one who can freak yourself out worst of all because you know your deadliest fears and they work against you. I also think that when the 'monsters' aren't actually monsters at all are the scariest. When the situations are gory and scary but plausible enough for you to think that it could happen. Like how so many horror movies take places in houses, or creepy mansions or in forests. Houses, most of the population live in or near one. Creepy mansions, many tourists visit these places and there are various circumstances where you could end up in one. Forests, camping, hiking, summer vacation, retreat. Then there are the already existing horror movie villains, the ones like serial killers or murderers. Fact of the matter is, there are a lot more of these guys in real life than horror movies made about them. Even a concept like a stalker can be chilling when put into context, the person doesn't even know someone is watching them just like you might not know someone is watching you. They're creepy but aren't necessarily supernatural.

Scariest thing I've ever seen in film & literature?
Stephen King's "The Stand" and "The Shining".
The Stand, you have no way to defend yourself from both devastating virus' which may either kill you or blind your senses and the other people who go insane after restrictions of law and morality are lifted. As for The Shining, it wasn't so much the ghosts and spirits, but the madness of isolation which manifests itself into the people trapped in the hotel, this madness goes to insanity and one may even fear themselves.
