  • We finally figure out in Episode 7 of the Acolyte why Jedi Master Torbin is so conflicted about his role during the Brendok Incident. It turns out he played a major role in instigating a completely unnecessary conflict between the Jedi and witches. The question I have is why?

How would you feel in his situation? And what are you usually always told while working on the clock in any field? Get the job done and you can go home. If your job was a scouting mission in a remote area of the woods, you'd want to rush to complete your tasks too. I think its also a reminder that just because someone was raised to be a Jedi doesn't mean that they should be or will be a good one. Legends comics had plenty of short stories where a Padawan realizes this isn't for them and leaves. Part of his behavior is age/maturity related, but also, maybe this life just isn't for him.

  • @xjezzakai324

    Great video as always!
2 points, I think Torbin sat in the fact that his simple frustrations and yearning to go home that night ate at him over the last 16 years. I think he reflected over many years how his impatience caused the deaths of 50 people. Because the 4 Jedi covered it up, some sort of Jedi counseling may not have been available. Feeling immense guilt that he caused so much death finally and no place to turn to for support resulted in him taking the vow.
Also, I agree with everything you said about children and battle. But this was not a battlefield, this was a mission to a presumed dead planet that was thought to be uninhabited. On paper, it sounds like a textbook example of a safe field training mission to take a Padawan to get some experience.

Oh I think it's 100% because a Dark Side Witch rummaged around in his noggin'...
He wanted to go home, Sol told him they want to find a Vergence in the Force, they find out there's something "off" about the Girls and they might be the Vergence they sought and so his mind jumps to the conclusion "Get the Girls -> Finish the Mission -> Get home".
Perfectly "logical", especially if you're a Teenager who's homesick and just a day or so before got pretty much violated and messed with (and yes Aniseya absolutely and entirely fucked up here... probably thought they'd be more concerned about Torbins overall state than "the mission") and probably had lasting, at least psychological, damage from that.
Why he's with them? Pretty sure this wasn't supposed to be a combat mission at all, just a survey of the planet, find out why its ecosystem has regenerated and get back... that is absolutely something that you would take your Padawan on perhaps indeed as his first Off-World Mission.

I think some classic Star Wars fans have a built in misconception that is also shared in some aspects of Tolkien fans. They think Jedi are "perfect" balanced and pensive beings all the time. In reality, despite being able to connect with the force, they are still human (or whatever they are) and they have emotions and are fallible. Likewise, in Tolkien, people sometimes think elves are perfect and always good. However, especially if you've read all the books, Elves are quite capable of cruelty, malice, and being just plain a-holes.
Most Jedi are good or are at least trying. But they're not perfect and they are in an imperfect institution with a few blindspots.

Why do you think those IP's are so popular to begin with? Why does Star Wars have a fanbase numbering in the tens of millions on Disney yet this show is in non-mans land, is not even charting anymore? Sure mess around and project all you like onto work more talented minds have built but all you'll get is failure.

I feel Torbin's actions make sense. He was homesick and wanted to be part of something more, something he felt was important. The latter being what many teenagers & young adults long for.
This answer to why Torbin took the Barrash Vow works very well, to me. His impatient, childish actions led to the death of an entire witch coven. Those last words probably should've been, "I thought I was doing the right thing."
Unless you've only seen The Phantom Menace and specific Clone Wars episodes, how does someone rationalize that Jedi Padawans never wine!? Anakin, Ahsoka, Ezra, and Luke all wined or complained at some point.
I like your personal example, Alan. These people want to tell me that they, or someone they know, has never been on an unpleasant trip (temporarily or the whole time) that they didn't want to be on and either kept silent to keep the happy vibes going, made it obvious for others to tell, or tolerated it up to a point.

  • @kingzut

it makes more sense if you think about it outside of just "he wants to go home", but as a whole. he doesnt just want to go home he clearly expected he would be doing more high profile missions. instead hes stuck in the middle of nowhere doing survey work for who knows how long. getting the girls does more than get him home it gets him recognition. he can see this as his way to finally get to do the "important" things he thought he would be doing. this moment could make his entire life going forward. remember he was told how incredibly important the vergence in the force is. if he provides the proof then it would show how valuable he is.
then factor in that he doesnt know what might happen next if he doesnt get the girls. will they just be stuck there for years. decades? will then be forced to abandon the planet and his time there mean nothing. would he be a failure? all that swirling with whatever influence was planted in his mind.
the fact he is so skilled at this point also suggests he thought his life and missions would be much more than just picking plants.

On top being a sign of his *expectations* of what his missions would be, his skill with his lightsbaer might also be the result of a *bias* in his training.
Yord is a fully-trained jedi knight from the same era, and his approach to every problem is to just strong arm his way through; he absolutely *brandishes* the force to intimidate the Trade Federation into telling him where Osha's room is on their ship, his plan for getting information from Qimir at the poison shop is for the others to surround the building so he can stroll in alone like an old west sheriff and arrest him. Indara, Torbin's master and primary mentor, mostly teaches him through reprimand and immediately resorts to *physically grappling* with Sol when they disagree with each other on the ship after the fire.
From what we've seen so far, Torbin's approach of "fuck it, let's just go in and take the girls" doesn't really seem too out of line with the other jedi's (notably excluding master Sol, Osha, and Jecki who would all be informed by Sol's experiences and teachings from the brendock mission) more forceful and authoritarian approach in this era, except that he broke ranks to do it on his own.

@@babytoshiro7014 the problem with more flashbacks in the last episode is the lack of time we have to resolve everything. osha is with the fallen jedi, who we still have no backstory on besides the vague non-answers from episode 6, sal and mae are on their way, green jedi woman and her apprentice are on forest planet looking for sal thinking hes the one who has done all this, we don't know who the fallen jedi's dark side master is, and we still haven't gotten the answer to the whole question of the acolyte, how do you kill a jedi without a weapon? They also need to clean this all up to ensure no jedi who later ends up on the jedi counsel or any jedi currently on the counsel knows the truth about what's going on.
If it ends with sal falling to the darkside and taking osha or mea as his apprentice and killing everyone else, that could answer some things. the counsel would think its a fallen jedi that did all this and no one could tell them otherwise, green jedi woman and her apprentice would also have to die. it would anwser the question how to kill a jedi without a weapon, make the fall.

Torbon was messed up from being possessed, his mind was violated. It was terrifying and I understood it to still be in effect. It drove the Wookie mad too.
PTSD is something viewers have come to dismiss in media. Torbin's mind was violated and his actions caused the death of dozens. You don't just shake it off.
I think of soliders with PTSD. A single incident can cause it, and we don't criticize them for not being strong enough to shake it off. Indeed, they usually get an medal.

  • @davidtwchan4925
    @davidtwchan4925 20 дней назад +2

Very first of all, thank you Alan for your video, insightful as usual.
Regarding "sending children to war zone", my POV is that this mission is never expected to be a "fighting" one, not even an adventurous one. It is more like a high-school student biology/anthropology field trip: you collect samples, draw illustrated pictures and diagrams of the environment, record observations on behavior, answers queries and little quiz from your teacher from time to time, and have some taste of wild camping, that's it.
The reason I used such analogy is that discovering vergence and potential force-sensitive being or force phenomena is one of the "routine" jobs of a Jedi Knight. It is almost one of the core tasks of Jedi: "collecting potential younglings, and for those too old to be trained, take a note and pay attention from afar for just in case". So every Jedi padawan should have experienced the entire procedures and even finish one on one's own (as part of the graduation examination).
Hence, from the very beginning, none of the members in the group had ever expected to have a violent encounter, not to mention battling and duelling and even killing other live beings.
Torbin's homesick is nothing special. Apparently he was born and raised in a "metropolitan" area and never used to wilder areas. And he should have already known this mission is no more than a "boring mandatory field class" to practice some very basic Jedi procedures/routines. Just like any teenagers he is simply bored and felt inconvenient at an unfamiliar environment.
And even the Jedi master and knights there were never prepared to face such an encounter. But it shouldn't be matter because there were Jedi codes to follow. It won't be the first encounter Jedi had in over a millenium, and won't be the first forceful and violent one. Standard protocol is not to interfere another ethnic group, and without their consensus as well as High Council order they should simply leave the planet for good,. Had Master Sol not jumped the gun, this trip should ha ended in a peaceful retreat with notes sent to Jedi temple.

Torbin was still under the witches control the entire time until the witches died. However, while Anasaya was alive, the core command she planted in his mind was an obsession to leave the planet. The obsession died when she did, but the aftermath of Brendok haunted Torbin the rest of his life.
We don’t know what Tobin discovered during his 6 year turn from padawan to Master. Whatever he found may have sent him into the Barash Vow for his guilt and to allow Mae’s pain to feel seen by at least one Jedi from Brendok. His apology was for all 4 of them, but he is the only one that took direct responsibility for what happened.
Indara doesn’t take responsibility, we don’t know if Kelnacha would have or not because of his premature death at the hand of the stranger, and Sol hasn’t taken responsibility as of yet either.
Mae knows what happened but Osha doesn’t. It’s not Mae that needs to hear his confession, but Osha. I theorize that Osha heard everything he said to Mae because of the helmet. Since she’s locked out the outside world, and her force sensitivity is returning, I suspect that it’s her wearing the mask as she goes after Sol. In the trailers we hear a monologue about “you killed my sisters” that we have yet to see. That’s one of my prediction for episode 8.
    Theories:
Osha will be fighting the Jedi whilst wearing the mask. Perhaps it’s Mae that stops Osha from going full on Sith. Perhaps she and Sol come to an understanding about Brendok. She knows what she did, what Torbin and Sol did, but she may not have known that it was Master Indara that killed the rest of the Coven when she pulled Kelnacha out of the possession. I don’t think we’re gonna get more of Qimir’s back story. We should get the full story of the twins creation but it will probably be through one of the Jedi or Qimir telling Osha how she and Mae were created and why they were created. I’m hoping we get Qimir telling us the story or even Mother Koril. We didn’t see her body, so she’s not dead.
Mae was probably on Dathomir with Koril and the Night Sisters the remainder of her youth. After she became an adult, she could’ve left the witches on her own to pursue revenge against the Jedi. I doubt Mother Koril would have a problem with Mae pursuing her revenge. Or maybe the night sisters didn’t want Mae around the coven any longer. Perhaps they saw her as a problem that would bring the Jedi to Dathomir or maybe Mae’s aggression towards the other coven members may have gotten her exiled. Maybe she met Qimir there or he was present the night of the ascension. Somehow I don’t think he has anything to do with the twins creation. I think he’s pulled the truth from Mae’s mind. That’s why he knows so much.
I think we will get more on Vernestra and Mog’s shenanigans. We’ll get to meet the Senator that’s got a hard on for the Jedi. That Senator is going to be Darth Plagueis.

To be fair, Tobin wasn't supposed to be a "battlefield". He was very homesick and maybe not ready for the mission. Love the Leroy Jenkins reference!
Andara and Sol's conflict was interesting and shows there is no "one size fits all" way to train padawans.

Torbin having immense power but lack maturity. He was not ready. This is one of the drawbacks to Jedi teachings and has been seen before.

I actually think it's funny how many lessons are in this episode from each side:
Mother Aniseya could have not been so quick to try and destabilize the Jedi's united force by attacking their weak link. She didn't realize she would come to the decision to let Osha join.
Sol wants a destiny so bad he screw it up by overreaching for what the Force would have provided anyway. His instincts were spot on but he tried to Alter it and that's what leaves him the screwed-up state he is now.
Indara is trying to be the cool and aloof mentor and has a clear disinterest with emotional connection she is always fighting because of the Jedi code and that ultimatey leads her to make the mistake of assuming that tough love and strict reinforcement would work on Torbin. In a way she doomed him too.
Torbin is just the prime example of a dream killer for anyone who wishes they grew up in the Star Wars universe and got to be a Jedi. He shows us it takes the SMALLEST misstep such as homesickness to remind us why attachment is forbidden and why Jedi are supposed to never truly have a 'home'. The Force is home.
Kelnacca is awesome and powerful and really hate their decision not to translate his Shyriiwook so I can get ANY INSIGHT into him. He's a Wookie Jedi. Like the official third of all time and as such it would be interesting to see how he compares his thoughts on the Force with the others or even his boredom in the moment.

I enjoyed this episode. For young very well fit skilled boy "space cop" in his robes who is probably in the center of attention from females on Coruscant. Having to spend 7 weeks on desolate planet must be a nightmare. Yes he is very similar to Anakin in episode 3.

Also he made his loneliness sacrifice afterwards becuse thats the oposite of what he wanted before .

I do think that what some people already said it makes Torbins later suicide in the early episodes much more believable. The guy had over a decate to reflect over that he (in his mind) probably killed over 50 people due to his impatience and his initiative. And if the whole thing got covered up, who had he to talk with to ease his conscience and deal with the trauma? Noone, because that would break the covering up and lead to even more trouble. So Torbin was stewing in his own guilt and the further cocktail of emotions for 16 years, no wonder he took the easy way out once Mae offered it.

    • @sleinadb
      @sleinadb 20 дней назад +1

I don't think he would have otherwise killed himself though. When she showed up with a mission to kill him that was the game changer. Decided to take that into his own hands...not just to control his own destiny but lets her off the hook technically for his death.

You recruit 18 year olds because if you wait till they’re in their mid 20s they’ll have wives, children, and careers. If you’re going to risk dying early, better to do it before you have a wife and kids.
