    Today we’re going to be trying out the FX80 Monitors by Fluid Audio! I met the guys at Fluid Audio back in January at NAMM, and we’ve finally got a pair to try out! They have been kind enough to send us a pair to give away as well! Entre the giveaway below for your chance to win!
    These retail for about $498 for the pair! Before we even opened the box I read a bunch of FX80 reviews to get more of an idea about these speakers! I’m very excited to hear them!
    Introducing our new FX series of coaxial studio monitors.
    Improving on our successful FX8, we now introduce the FX80.
    We have taken users feedback and improved on all points.
    We will claim this is the best sounding studio monitor below $250
    New, contoured baffle enclosure design
    Keeping true to the original “keyhole” design, the FX enclosure has been updated with a complex radius front baffle, which not only looks pretty cool, it improves cabinet defraction.
    Coaxial driver
    Mounted in the center of the woofer is a 30mm silk dome tweeter in a coaxial configuration. Using this technology (unique in its price range) makes it a “point source” device, meaning that all the sound emanates from a single point - not points that are 10″ apart. This is crucial for improving off-axis response, but also allows for a more compact footprint cabinet.
    Boundary compensation DIP switches
    Sometimes the spaces where we mix aren’t the most forgiving acoustically
    (especially if you’re in a home studio).
    The FX series monitors come equipped with boundary control EQ switches, that allow you to compensate for spaces that may not have been “tuned” or just need to be adjusted due to their proximity to the wall behind them. There is also a guide conveniently printed on the rear panel to show how the DIP switches work, and a more detailed explanation in the user guide.

      Looks at 20 year old Event 20/20Ps and wonders "what are new studio monitors?" 😂 However, I'm listening on Slate VSX headphones, so I'm not that far off. I listen to a bunch of material that I used to use when I installed car stereo systems. If I only had one song to listen to I use "Hotel California" from the MTV show in 94. The impact, depth, and lows of the Djembe/Kick followed by the placement in the stereo field of the right and left offset shakers, the difference between the nylon and steel string acoustics, the shimmer of the chimes going from left to right, and finally Henley's vocals. I used this to fall in love with Focal Shape 65's at VK in Nashville a few months ago. My wallet didn't agree with my assessment though.

      If it's too loud and annoys my neighbours (sheltered accommodation flats for oldies like me) then it's no good. The Kali LP6's are great when quiet, I couldn't get away with anything else. My acoustic pads are two squares of thick wool carpet. Perfect and better than most foam pads. 🎅🎅🎅

    Wow, I loved the way you did not dismiss these speakers at the start of the review when they were obviously sounding pretty awful and boxy. At the end, once you had adjusted the EQ, they were sounding so much better. I suppose that is a useful lesson for us all. Thanks teacher. ☺️

      You’re very kind! Yes, my room has its own sound, everybody’s does and I had to tune the Genelecs as well to sound great in there! So it’s only fair and makes perfect sense to get the speakers to sound as good as they can in my environment!

    Thank you for this review Warren! I have a pair of their older brothers (FX8), and for the price they sound pretty dang good and translate well, from my room at least. Only issue was a slight amp hiss (A/B poweramp), but they seem to have solved it in later releases of the FX8 and later models. Cheers from Italy!

    Friends of mine have these. They are great, especially for their price, like where do you get a concentric 8" studio monitor for 200€? And they go down to 35 Hz. If that's not low enough for you, there's also a 10" sub that goes down to 20Hz. Also, 110 Watts per Speaker? That's almost half that of a regular 12" PA speaker, and those will fill out a big room no questions asked
    Anyways, the album they mixed is called "of Bedrooms and Basements" by Signal From Noise

      @@Producelikeapro Coaxial monitors are incredible in terms of imaging and sweet spot. I can never go back to regular monitors for nearfield. I have the dip switch on -4dB with the acoustic space and kept everything else flat. I find I have a significant room mode at 125Hz, which I suspect comes from the desk itself and the front wall. The dipswitch helps with that. The low mids are still slightly off to my ears, but everything else is absolutely incredible especially when paired with the subwoofer. I am planning on using Sonarworks to flatten the 125Hz room mode and make my setup as neutral as possible.

    For those who don't know what XLR means: it comes from the part number prefix of the Cannon (company) X= X Series + L= Latch/Locking (cause they added a locking mechanism) + R= Rubber (cause the female contacts are insulated with rubber, the part you usually plug into a microphone for example)

    i remember the day i went to a music store with a testing cd i had made beforehand. there was some NIN - We're in this together now; Dire Straits - You and your friend; Some i believe Chopin Nocturne and some Movie OST, prolly something big and epic by Zimmer. Every pair of monitors, from 800 to 2400 did a pretty good job - or so i thought. What settled things was a sine sweep i had recorded on that same CD. I went back home without new monitors and stuck to my old passive Tannoys. Of course, the monitors you know will be among the best, but back then in 2002, only the Genelecs and the Mackies among those i tested, would give you a homogenic response of that sine sweep. And the Mackies, while beautiful, couldn't resolve fast Bass Signals. 16th-Synth-Bass would result in an eternal bass note. I'm still mixing on said old passive monitors^^

    I've been looking at these a really long time and I think I'm about ready to pull the trigger. I liked the comparison to the genelec's. It really helped to hear the change differences between the settings. High Shelf, Mid and low cutoff are pretty easy to get figured out and you did pretty much what I was thinking I would have to do for my space as well. The only thing I'm curious about, which we were not able to hear is what the "Acoustic Space" switches will actually adjust as well as where did you have the volume knob placed that had them matching volume with the Genelec. I tend to keep my HS8 in the middle, but I'm not sure they translate the same between Yamaha and Fluid. Yamaha seems like it's more of an overall cut and boost than a volume knob, so leaving them center makes sense. So curious about how that Voume knob compares as well.
    TLDR: Where is the Volume knob set and what are the sound differences when adjusting switches 5 & 6 Acoustic Space.

  • @efnerva664
    @efnerva664 3 года назад +7

    I'm glad that modern speaker designs tend to have softer high end. There's a pair of Yamaha hs8-s in the control room and my ears are bleeding every time :D.
    It's probably just me being too sensitive to highs, but don't have that problem with Neumann kh80's. I could only imagine what engineers had to live through with the ns10-s.
    It would actually be really nice to see decent sub 1k speakers without ports in the future. That would be a huge step in budget speaker designs.

    • @aholder4471
      @aholder4471 3 года назад

      The NS 10s were notorious for being harsh on the high end, so much so that some people put cloth in front of the tweeter to cut some of the harshness but that actually was one of the things that made them great to mix on because you wouldn't make your mix too bright. Your ear naturally wants to hear brightness and loudness and getting them both is kinda the holy grail quest back in those days, now bass is equally important because of storage media quality and modern consumer speakers. Just my personal opinion but I judge monitors more on how my mix translates than how great the listening experience is. But, having said that, its great to have a few different sets and a "hifi" set that is detailed without being fatiguing is a must on long sessions to me. Have fun!

      Yep. A lot of bright speakers sizzled and distorted. Made it impossible to hear air and masked the higher frequencies of the presence range. Impossible to accurately EQ highs on them and mastering on them was out of the question.

Because these Fluid Fx sound like good monitors for beginning but i hear a difference with your Focal monitors in your mic . I hear more AIR and the reverbs. That more important to have both good Low and High frequency for me now. So i must put each month a little money to buy much expensive ones , i think.

    I’ve definitely been looking for an upgrade from my KRK Rokit 5s. I’ve got some treatment in the room, and recently purchased sonar works. Ive personally been wanting a better midrange response. And have noticed artists wanting more volume when tracking when I’m practically maxed out. You reckon this would be a solid upgrade for my needs?

    • @unclemick-synths
      @unclemick-synths 3 года назад +1

      I would check them out if you can against other speakers to see if their sound works for you. It's worth taking the time to compare speakers.
      Definitely time for you to upgrade. I enjoyed a pair of G3 RP8s for many years but the G3 RP5s were over-ported IMO (typical for speakers with small dimensions). SonarWorks likely doesn't get the best out of them. I can imagine it's maxing out their power in the dips in the low-end frequency response which would limit how loud you can go with them.

    • @austinhein239
      @austinhein239 3 года назад

      @@unclemick-synths hey I appreciate your reply. I haven’t gotten used sonar works with the 5s yet because of a move and Xmas stress getting in the way. But that’s something good to know and keep in mind. I agree way over ported.
      But I ended up finding a mint, less than 3 month old pair of these guys for 320 bucks on reverb last night. Hard to argue at that price (had saved up a decent budget for NS-10s) so I just went ahead and pulled the trigger on them and their monitor stands.
      For a small dent in my monitor budget, I think it was a wise purchase. Even if they just become a second set to test on in the future. Pretty excited nonetheless!

    • @unclemick-synths
      @unclemick-synths 3 года назад +1

      @@austinhein239 it sounds like they'll have the grunt to handle whatever SonarWorks asks of them if you get in the ballpark first with the DIP switches. I think you're better off leaving NS-10s as a second opinion speaker though I personally greatly prefer cube speakers over the Yamahas.

      @@unclemick-synths are you referring to the Avantone mix cube speakers? What do you like/prefer about them?
      The reason for my want of NS-10s was just to have something completely highlight the nasties in the midrange. I was astonished at how easy it was to pick out bad buildups on my buddys set. But if there’s other similar/better options, I’d love to look into them

      They do have an extra amount of low mids, at least in my room. Because of software like Sonarworks, we can definitely remove any bumps caused by either room or the speaker, meaning inexpensive speakers can really now be an option for may people!

    I've always been interested in spending time with Duel concentric/coaxial mons. I remember the old Tannoy NFM 8s, and the tweeter always sounded too lazer sharp to my ear (I actually have a tweeter driver right here in a box). I haven't sat in a room with those Genelecs since, late 90s ?. I remember them being on the crispy side(forward mid-high mids). Is that how you hear yours?
    For $500 they look really cool, but hypey lows or highs give me pause. I'd probably spend $400 on the Kali LP8s , since they're supposed to be flatter out of the box.

      @Producelikeapro  3 года назад +3

      The speakers were at maximum and the volume was much identical. Unfortunately not all speakers have individual volume control and most importantly some just aren’t loud enough for a larger room like mine! What I liked about these is they maybe affordable but they can fill a room!

    • @RonnieVaiArovo
      @RonnieVaiArovo 3 года назад +1

      @@Producelikeapro Yes sir but it is possible to set the volume of the speakers at a nice detent point (about 50%) and compensate for any volume difference between speaker systems with the volume control of the speaker itself.
      I am guessing you like to drive the pre-amp gain of your speakers to the max because perhaps you believe it is a better sound?
      Your big Genelecs sound wicked man! Nice and balanced! whereas the fluid audio sounds like a smiley face! Overly hyped in the bass and harshly wispy in the presence. Have you ever tested the Presonus Eris E8 monitors? They have an amazing sound for the price mate.
