    him playing the scale while having the playback speed of the video at 2times was awesome.

    Jaco Pastorious said a lot of the same things about the bass guitar. He called frets speed bumps and said they just slow you down.

    The Bb scale, with variations, against the grain, is demonstrated on Fletcher Henderson's Sugarfoot Stomp, 1931 Columbia version, by both Claude Jones and Benny Morton in their respective solos.

    I studied for a while with George Krem whose students have included Doug Yeo. George called them "out scales". A really good example of their use is that n the Cadenza to Mantia's "Enduring Young Charms", recorded by Larry Weighe while a member of the Washington USAF band. A r cording of Weighe playing this can be found here on RUclips. Thanks as always Paul for this great tip. Cheers!

    Wouldn't the high Bb technically be in 7th, since it's natural pitch would be the E above?

    watch and listen to the jazz greats like Carl Fontana and Frank Rosolino. Masters of speed on trombone. Doodle tounging and working lip slurs. McChesney is another.

    The terrible thing about this is when I went to All-State festival last year all of the trombones in my section were doing this exact thing before each rehearsal

    You say 'on the instrument you least expect' but trombones are just bigger tuning slides. Also I didn't think there was a myth about trombones typically being slow... Think of flight of the bumblebee on trombone...

    Lmao piano and guitar/bass can do twice as fast, in any key, with on their whole respective registers

  • @kidjackson21

    Why not go into 5th for the Bb?

    • @PaulTheTrombonist
      @PaulTheTrombonist  6 лет назад +10

      because you want to keep the motion all going in one direction to keep the fast flow going
