I lived in Florida and had my car in a garage for repair. Had a Led Zep car tag on the front. An older gentleman, asked who's the Zeppelin fan? I raised my hand and he told me stories, about flying the Starship from city to city with the band and crew. I was thinking, " yeah,Right!" Then the man showed me a Polaroid picture of a younger him with the band in front of the Starship,on some Tarmac. I was blown away! Saw them in 1973 (MSG the second one of the nights for the Song Remains the Same movie), 1975 & twice in 1977.....no opening act for any of the shows. My 1975 show was at the Nassau Coliseum on Long Island in NY. Ron Wood came out and played with them on Communication Breakdown for the encore. I've been to about 300 concerts in my life time....none were better than these 4.
No opening act for Led Zep beginning in 1970. They were completely alone from that year forward. By the way, a 2.5 hour show was considered rather short in LZ's time. 3 to 3.5 hours and longer were the norm. Best band. Ever.
Same in St.Louis. Fortunately for me they had to cancel a show I did not have tickets to (Robert Plant sick) but was able to get tickets when they rescheduled. Played 3 and a half hours
May 18, 1977 Birmingham Alabama No opening act, and it was a fantastic 3 hours, and I was on the rail for the first half of the show. I celebrate that day every year.
Saw them in 77 at the Pontiac Silverdome Michigan. No opening act-no introduction! Lights went off and in the pitch black heard the opening D cord of the Song Remains the Same! The lights came when the band played as the crowd of only standing “festival” floor tickets rushed the stage and it was on…Epic concert!!
This was fun to listen to. I saw Zeppelin live 5 times! First time I was a junior in high school in 73 at MSG in NY. I was 16 and absolutely hooked to be a lifelong fan. Next time was in 1975 on February 13th at the Nassau Colesium in NY. I had brought a blind date with me to the show. It was a relationship that lasted 6 years! Then 3 more times in 1977 at MSG again. Interesting! I'm 56, so was too young to see them live, but between 1981 and 1985 I saw The Song Remains The Same at the midnight movies over 80 times, and back then watching the 1973 Madison Square Garden concert was like you were there, especially with a buzz going. In College I had a weekend truck washing business, and would listen to The Song while working on my Sony Walkman, and especially with head phones Dazed is out of this world, as is Whole Lotta Love and the 73' MSG version of Since I've Been Loving You. Jimmy is just so damn tight and amazing in 1973. If you watch their shows from 1973 and before, compared to 75' and 77' you can really tell the difference, especially with Jimmy, and IMO it was from him getting into the H.
Ah ok-the Audio definitely indicates that. But if you can add to that , that would be Great. Also if U could indicate what Position U held that would be Great as well. No Can Do = No worries/pressure. Either way Thanx man !
I believe they only had opening acts in the earlier days, since they put on 3 to 4 hour nonstop concerts, they didn’t need opening acts. Peter Grant also got them 90% of the profits, instead of the 10% bands were getting. He had told whomever from the venue, you can have 10% of a sold out concert, or 100% of nothing. That opened the gates for other bands to get bigger cuts, so many had preformed like crazy, & barely made any money. Grant took great care of them, they didn’t have to worry about anything, but their music. Page & Grant got an amazing contract with Atlantic Records, for Page/the band to have complete control over all aspects. When to make albums * when to tour * how they’d promote concerts/albums * when or if they’d release singles (very few) * No TV shows * choice of album covers etc etc. their first rehearsal was on August 19,1968, the day before Plant’s 20th birthday. This contract was signed on November 23,1968, & a $143,000 advance, the largest at the time, for a new band. Atlantic Records hadn’t even heard them perform live. Their first US concert was on December 26,1968, in Denver Colorado, & off they went.
Dusty Springfield was one of the reasons why Atlantic was willing to sign them before ever even hearing their music. I don't recall what she said to Ahmet Ertegun, but it must've been awful complimentary! I know that Atlantic was very well pleased from that day on.
Feb 1, 1975, Pittsburgh. Civic Arena. NO opening act. Fantastic show even though Robert had a bad cold, and sounded like Rod Stewart, LOL...Jimmy's finger was healing from a car door incident. So they did "How Many More Times" in place of "Dazed"... Great Show, I will never forget it...
Feb 16, 1975, St. Louis. We got "Dazed", however. I remember hearing at the time that it was the first time on that tour because of the broken finger. I've since read it was more likely the second or third. I can still see Page with the guitar held horizontally over his head, still playing an extended solo. And holding it there for a second with just the one hand, his left, still playing. And, I believe that was the hand with the broken finger. 3 hours and 3 encores. No breaks, no opener. Just them. Unfortunately, we mail ordered tickets and drove 3 hours to get there. Our seats sucked. Worst I've ever had. We were actually slightly behind the stage backdrop. We watched Page's back. Occasionally, Plant when he wandered over that side. Could see Bonham through the backdrop. Nothing of JPJ. Still the best show I've ever attended. By far. For that 3rd encore, the house lights were up and we were leaving. When they came on again, everyone rushed back in. So, we watched that 3rd encore standing in a floor level doorway. The band did NOT want to quit that night. That was actually my very first concert, period. No venues less than an hour away from my hometown. Saw them again in 77, in Chicago. Except that show aborted after about 1/2 hour. Supposedly, Page sick. Some say, on drugs. I know the constant fireworks from the crowd, despite being begged to stop by Robert, didn't help. Finally got to see Page actually from the front, and closer, in Jacksonville, FL with the Firm.
I saw LZ on Feb 7 1975 MSG NYC. Physical Graffitti came out 2 1/2 weeks later but they played Kashmir, In My Time of Dying and Trampled Underfoot. No backing band.
I saw Zep 3 times - once in 75 and twice in 77 - never an opening act but if the ticket said 7:30p Showtime, then 1000p was when they finally took the stage. They probably played until 200a. I guess the crowd got their money’s worth but what a long day !
Did not see the ‘75 tour, but did see them at MSG on 6/10/77. No opening act - MASSIVE sound system, stage right had all of Jimmy’s guitars lined up in front of his Marshall with the Zoso cab and echoplex. Opened with Song Remains the same - they’d always change up 1 song and the night we saw them they played “ Over the hills and Far away”. The thing about the show I remember best was the odd diversity in the crowd - Hippie kids, Bensonhurst muscle dudes, even older adults. The show was good, but I remember thinking Jimmy played kind of sloppy; Plant sounded great throughout the show, and Bonham had the roadie bring him a Heineken after every song, which he would chug and then throw the bottle at the roadie - they’d play a cat and mouse game with it - scary fun. I have to add that I saw Pink Floyd at Nassau play the last performance of “ The Wall” in a huge snowstorm on 2/29/80 and there’s been nothing before or after to compare to it.And I was a rabid Zeppelin Fan - the time to see them was, I think , 69-73, Jimmy was strung out by 1977 - Crazy skinny and smoking cigarettes all through the set…not great. But yes, no opening act and 31/2 hrs no break…
Saw Robert Plant in 1988 in Costa Mesa, CA. He was on his Now And Zen tour. Show kicked ass. Was too young to see Zep in their prime but, damn, every local dude would be blasting the newest LZ album out of their parents' house.
I saw them 7 times in California from 1971-1977, Only opening acts were the outdoor stadium shows put on by Bill Graham in San Francisco (1973) and Oakland (1977).
Interesting they say they had a motorcycle escort inn Montreal in February. Had tickets for them twice. NEVER did get to see them. Plants son died and Bonham death cancelled both shows.
I loved Led Zeppelin. They had fun, on tour,( messed up a few hotel rooms,I hear). It's never as fun,as you think it would be,( airports, hotels, traffic, sound checks, etc.)💛
Great watch! From 1975 onwards, Zep toured without support acts, apart from a couple of major festival-type shows at Oakland, California, on the 1977 USA tour.
The Tubes, Lee Michaels and Roy Harper appeared before them at Kezar Stadium, San Francisco, in 1973. There were also support acts at Wembley, London, in 1971.
@@DSM9 No what I meant was that Zeppelin's gigs from late 1970 were typically without support. That was the norm. I didn't mean they never had any support at any gigs from then on. They did, but rarely and only on the big all day stadium gigs. Which bands supported them at Wembley Empire Pool? I thought it was just entertainment like jugglers and trampoline performers etc?
Correction: They Did Not Play Communication Breakdown, I would've Remembered that! Encore #1: The Beginning of 'Out on the Tiles' then Launched into Black Dog! For Encore #2 They played Heartbreaker, but didn't follow It with Livin' Loving Maid like on Led Zeppelin II. (I only found out years later that they Never played Livin' Loving Maid On Stage ever!)
Haven't seen them live .but I read that in the beginning they had opening acts..but later on they didn't have openings acts cause their concerts/shows lasted like 3 or sometimes even 4 hours
Although I was too young to see them on their last tour in '77, I do know that at least for some shows on that tour, Judas Priest opened up for them. Good choice and I think they were the only band that ever opened up for them.
@ what would have happened is that you would have been booed unmercifully. The fans including me were so hyped to see Zep, you would have a daunting task to keep their interest. BTW, do you have any albums, top 40 singles or even a record contract? Remember , you’re opening for one of the legends of rock music & history. I’m sure you could give Jimmy some pointers 😂cheers
I know that in the 71/72 era, they had opening bands like Grand Funk Railroad and Three Dog Night. But I believe 1972 was the last time any of their shows featured an opening act, as from 1973 onward, they were the sole headliners.
Saw them in March, '75 in Seattle. 3+ hour show and no opening act. Back then you had to attend a concert to see them. Peter Grant saw to that, I've read.
Was lucky enough to see Led Zeppelin in 1971 at LA Forum ,1972 Tucson Community Center,1973 UNM Albuquerque, and forth and final time 3/5/75 in Dallas and I’m so lucky I still have three of the four tickets stubs don’t know what became of the Albuquerque stub, they opened the 71 and 72 shows with Immigrant Song and Rock&Roll for the 73 and 75 shows there was no opening band for any of the shows. PS The Dallas show audio is on RUclips the opening night 3/3/75 in Fort Worth and the 3/4 and 3/5 shows in Dallas very good quality.
Judas Priest and Rick Derringer opened for Zep at their last two US shows in Oakland CA 7/23 and 7/24/77. These were Day On the Green shows put on by Bill Graham.
Saw them in Seattle in 1977. They never had an opening act because the believed in giving the fans a 3 hour set. My friends and I decided to drive through the Edgewater Hotel driveway just to be close. No internet, barely any press or even published photographs in those days. They were total mystery and they were gods to us. There were four of us, my brother and two other buddies in my father's Chevy Caprice Classic. We weren't the only ones with this idea for there was a complete traffic jam going into the driveway loop that led to the front entry of the hotel. Seemed as though it took us at least 40 minute before we got close to the front of the hotel. Looking up at rich kids partying it up from their balconies in the Edgewater. So there was one taxi cab in front of us that came to a stop in front of the hotel. The cab rear door opened and out dashed Jimmy Page in a full sprint into the hotel. I jumped out of the passenger side and stood there in shock. Then slowly out came Robert Plant with a big smile on his face. He waved and calmly sauntered into the hotel. We were in that car line all that time and Page and Plant were right in front of us in a taxi Cab and we didn't know it. We found out later that they were returning from a Seattle Sounders Soccer game.
Great Story. Those days in the 70s that kind of stuff could happen - I met Keith Richards in 7/11 on New Years Eve in Somers , NY on 12/31/77. He was wearing a fur jacket and torn jeans and gave me a dead fish handshake and said something unintelligible… hilarious- he lived in Waccabuc, NY. He still lives in the area - he’s been in Weston, CT forever…
Portland Oregon 1968 December. Opening band ( Vanilla Fudge ) 2nd concert they ever played in the USA. Two weeks later I was in Vietnam. Since that time I have been a Zepplin man . Still to this day ( in Thailand retired ) the first thing I do when I get in my truck to go to town is listen to STAIRWAY to HEAVEN. Ya can't make this shit up.
I saw Led Zeppelin at the LA Forum in March of 1975 and June of 1977. My tickets were $7.50 and $9.75 (parking was free). Neither show had an opening act. Both shows were well over 3.5 hours long. While on the west coast, they stayed at the Hyatt House on Sunset Blvd in Hollywood. AKA the Riot House. The 1975 gig was my first concert at 14. I'm now 62. The LA Forum gigs were 5 and 6 shows almost in a row. Maybe 1 or 2 days off in the week. Grueling schedule. Tickets for Led Zep these days would probably be $500 each for the worst seats. IF you could find one.
Saw them in 77 at the Pontiac Silverdome. They were an hour or two late, but played for over 3 hours, and no, there was no backup act. It was Zeppelin for Gods sake!
I saw Led Zeppelin 3 times in Dallas, 1969, 1970 & 1973. The best live concerts I have been to in my life!! 1969's show had the 13th Floor Elevator open for them...The 1970 & 1973 shows had no opening bands. By 1973, it was a 3-hr plus show!!!
I had tickets for the 1975 tour to be played in Oakland CA. It was cancelled. Joe Walsh and The Pretty Things were both supposed to open. Would have been a great concert. Did see The mighty Zeppelin in 1977 Day on the Green both days. Judas Priest opened and then Derringer played an amazing set.
Pretty common knowledge for most Zep fans, they almost took a support/opening act in 1970, but it didn't happen, and never after either. No, no opening act for Zep (and none needed) 😉
I never had the pleasure, but I know it wasn't until the latter years they had an opening act. I know at some point Judas Priest opened for them, but they still continued playing long sets.
Saw Led Zeppelin 5 nights in Los Angeles forum and was with them at the Knebworth show. I worked with Toby Robert’s tours who handled most of their tours and many other major rock band tours . Providing transportation with aircraft’s (Starship) buses, and trucks . My most intimate time with them was at Knebworth , of course backstage, on stage and in the cars after show where we all went to a bar and it was crazy, everyone was there except jimmy. I have so much stories about this experience and many other band I toured with. Thx for sharing this article. Its been a long time since I thought about this stuff
‼️3 1/2 +\-Hours a nite is what they would play if they are having a good time ! & they enjoyed playing together so 3 1/2 hour shows was QUITE COMMON for the Mighty Zep‼️ & opening acts ? None 👈🏼 usually! FACTS!👍🏼
I come out of a power pop scene that has eaten itself. Orthodoxy and the collapse of the old music biz paradigm has taken a nice little collective of like minded artist and fractured it into dust. My music is basically still in that vein but now I will infuse my music with whatever I feel. Gonna try the Patreon thing.
The Montreal ‘75 show is one of the better sounding boots to come out at the time in the early to mid ‘80s. An ok performance as Page had a sprained finger AND Plant was at the tail end having the flu. Also, almost an hour of fan shot video(!) came out recently. ruclips.net/video/NmRu2lTuuHM/видео.htmlsi=y-Gt-0o3itjaOG0K

I got to see them twice in two days in row no opening act long shows a great time
I saw Zep 3 times - once in 75 and twice in 77 - never an opening act but if the ticket said 7:30p Showtime, then 1000p was when they finally took the stage. They probably played until 200a. I guess the crowd got their money’s worth but what a long day !
Must have been the May 31 show
Did not see the ‘75 tour, but did see them at MSG on 6/10/77.
I only saw them in the 1994 Plant Page reunion. Enough to remember it as the most enjoyable in my life, and I seen them all.
I saw that tourn in Miami. Fantastic night!
Saw that show too in San Diego. Amazing.
‼️Saw them two in Cincy in 94? I believe!!
Best SHOW of my life!
you can.t beat flying with jimmy robert john paul john plus having steak shrimp and salad with the ultimate group
Well, evidently an antacid tablet beat it.
Great video and story 👌
They were doing shows with no opening act in 72, would have been incredible to see that!:
They didn't even have support acts from 1970 onwards (Madison Square Gardens). 😳
@@DSM9…..Derringer and Judas Priest opened for them at Bill Graham’s Day on The Green in ‘77. (Oakland Coliseum)
you got your moneys worth with zeppelin.
The basked in the Cheers & Love from the Audience for almost 5 Minutes before leaving the stage for good!
Excellent info! Thank you!
Judas P and Rick Derringer opened for Zep at their last two US shows in Oakland CA 7/23 and 7/24/77.
I saw 5 shows in New York, they NEVER had an opening act. Who in there right mind would want to open for them ? 😂
I would.
Seattle Kingdome 1977, no opening act, 96,000 in attendance. Three hours of rock and roll.
I was at the MSG show in 1975 - no backup band. They sounded tight
I saw them April 15,1977 in St Louis no opening act, the only show of the 77' tour where they didn't do an encore.
The ONLY WAY to Travel-Thanx Robert !
I know that in the 71/72 era, they had opening bands like Grand Funk Railroad and Three Dog Night.
But I believe 1972 was the last time any of their shows featured an opening act, as from 1973 onward, they were the sole headliners.
I never saw Zep, but interestingly, I did see Plant in 1983 and similarly, he had no opening act.
How cool that must've been!
I remember those tape machines from jr high by the mid to late 70's
I've written a Led Zeppelin screenplay
TRES Cool/Heavy!
4-7-77 Chicago Stadium no opener
On at
8 off 11
Magnificent to say the least
7th row center
Saw them in 77 at the Pontiac Silverdome. They were an hour or two late, but played for over 3 hours, and no, there was no backup act. It was Zeppelin for Gods sake!
I saw them in 75 and 77 no opening act either time.
Mind blown
Congrats, the absolute peak!
@ Thank you, Joel, I consider those events a series of blessings and gifts for my life and those experiences changed my life!!
DITTO !!!!i COULD HAVE WROTE THIS !!
77 three nights at MSG in NY. 3.5 hour show every night.
That's actually really amazing. MSG too!
I believe that Led Zeppelin toured with Jethro Tull in the early 1970s...
Twice at Superdome, no opening act, still got ticket for third which was sadly cancelled
73,75 and 77 in Seattle, no opener!
Awesome! How cool that would have been.
I saw them in 77, Rick Derringer & Judas Priest opened
Saw them in Tampa, no opening act.
In the early days Zep did share the stage with other acts like Iron Butterfly.
In 1975, they were untouchable. Egos must have been running high and I'm sure there was a lot of excess.
Saw Led Zeppelin on February 1, 1975 at Civic Arena in Pittsburgh. There was no opening act.
I WAS 10, WISH I COULD HAVE BEEN ABLE TO SEE THEM.😢
Pretty common knowledge for most Zep fans, they almost took a support/opening act in 1970, but it didn't happen, and never after either.
No, no opening act for Zep (and none needed) 😉
I never had the pleasure, but I know it wasn't until the latter years they had an opening act. I know at some point Judas Priest opened for them, but they still continued playing long sets.
How interesting.
Saw them in 1973 Buffalo NY.
No opening act.
no opening act!!! however when they were young they opened for several bands.... THEY BLEW EVERY ONE OF THEM OFF THE STAGE!!!!!
By the way the ticket cost $17.50! Lol
$160’000 in 1975 in one day, that’s a lot to money .
In the early 70s thy were supported by Jethro Tull touring the US, they did not get on, see the short doc. On you tube.
Bonzo used to refer to Jethro Tull as “Bore em’ at the forum!”
@@markhostetler6319 and Jethro Dull!
@@mikeadamson9963 LOL! I haven’t heard that one!
2,5 hours is actually a short set for LZ ...
‼️3 1/2 +\-Hours a nite is what they would play if they are having a good time !
& they enjoyed playing together so
3 1/2 hour shows was QUITE COMMON for the
Mighty Zep‼️
& opening acts ?
None 👈🏼 usually!
FACTS!👍🏼
So Plant , Jones, and Bonham could take this article home to their wives and say " See, we weren't poking any groupies."
Saw them in February of 1975, no opening act.
No opening band, 1977.
It's common knowledge that led zeppelin never used an opening act. I saw them six times.
1975 was still a Virgin 😊
I was still a seaman
The Montreal ‘75 show is one of the better sounding boots to come out at the time in the early to mid ‘80s. An ok performance as Page had a sprained finger AND Plant was at the tail end having the flu. Also, almost an hour of fan shot video(!) came out recently. ruclips.net/video/NmRu2lTuuHM/видео.htmlsi=y-Gt-0o3itjaOG0K
Led Zeppelin at Detroit's Olympia 1975, no warmup band...
