The most unique and lucid interview of Necrobutcher ever. Kudos, Shayan. While I'm against his sometimes callous disservice and revisionism of Euronymous' memory at several instances and downplaying the sheer innovation emanating from Aarseth's artistic output, there's no doubt he's an OG and has lots of interesting insights. He also seems to be practically savvy, and was also very chill and friendly in person back in April '23. Seeing two banners on either side of the stage - of Oystein and Pelle - with and without corpse-paint; got me emotional when I saw them in 2023 here in Bangalore, India. It felt like we were participating in something bigger than ourselves, a legacy. Even more overwhelming than seeing the DMDS set in Budapest, 6 years earlier. Mayhem is the legend of black metal.
I had this album for a couple years and didn't listen to it until a month ago. It still had the wrapper on it. It's a great album, but wish I would have bought a second one to open.
I attended the Saturday show in Oslo. We traveled to Norway for the first time and visited Euronymous grave and Helvete, Katatcombon, Rock in etc. The best weekend of the year 🤘😎
Just started to watch this interview and it's fucking great! Mayhem is definitely my favorite band, and as I get older I appreciate their music more. Great interview, and keep up the awesome work!!!
He often says "altså" without really meaning to (not meaning to speak Norwegian in an English interview). It's a bit like some say "like" a lot in English, but it's when he wants to be more precise rather than being not so precise. It can also be a word some just rests on for a short bit during pondering or to zoom in or out on a topic. I really don't know any better way to explain it. Google translate says "so" and "that is", and I guess that can work. "That is" is when you want to be more precise, for example "that is if you want to be more precise". :p Hmm, I guess one way to use it is to get back to your original train of thought or point after a small detour.
As a native English speaker who has been learning Norwegian this year, and has watched a number of interviews with him - I had wondered about this. I realized that he was not saying “også” - because that didn’t make sense, but I couldn’t quite figure it out. Thank you for pointing this out and helping me understand!
Seems my comment didn't show up so I will make a new attempt and hope it will stick. 1:16 into this video and I already have to pause and tell you that you seem to be very likeable to me. Not just cause we seem to share same kind of music. Not even because of the training (that we don't share unfortunately). No, this is all you, going all in within the first minute to share some part of you that in itself is very likeable. That doesn't happen a lot. Usually I watch the video cause that is what I stumbled upon and it got my attention and then, after I watched, I have made an opinion, of the subject in the video and sometimes of the content creator itself. In this case it was flipped, I like you, therefore I subscribe, and now I hope that the interview is good. But I have a feeling, plus other comments, telling me it is. After I watched I will take a look at your band too! 🤘🔥🖤🤘
Both this and the interview on Into The Necrosphere, which came out around the same time and are quite similar, are good. However, I am disappointed that both of you didn't challenge him on his repeated claims about having written the De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas album. He says he doesn’t want to interfere with guitar players when they’re composing because they know what they’re doing much better than him, yet he claims to have written their most popular album. It’s interesting how he hasn’t written anything since that reaches the same level. It’s too easy to take credit when the original creators are no longer around.
@@tornadomagazine8568 Hey, thanks for the feedback. I believe he was referring to the earlier demos, like Pure Fucking Armageddon - I don't think he mentioned anything here about writing DMDS.
I do not share the same views as those in this video. But that doesn’t mean I can’t enjoy it. The main thing I was taught was to love and not judge. Therefore I will and won’t.
It's a terrible cliché, but it's still true. After Dead and Euro, Mayhem became a cover band of itself. The spirit was long gone. Want to get a glimpse of what Mayhem was like with Dead and Euro? Just listen to Necro's words before Pure Fucking Armageddon on Live in Leipzig then. It says it all. There was still hope with Maniac though. A true misanthrope.

Legend has it that Necro has not slept since 1993. Great interview!
As evidenced by this interview..
