Not that they were the only ones, much like Elvis wasn't alone during his era, but it's so interesting to be able to isolate 2 bands and basically pin down a whole sub-genre. In my opinion, all this talk of what criteria a band must possess to make them Black Metal is moot. I dont think its about the ideology, the appearance, or where the are from. To me, Black Metal is such because of the guitar tone. Thats what makes BM instantly recognizable. Its all about the guitar tone.

However,after awhile,a lot of this stuff started getting boring for me because it was faceless....all sounds the same after awhile. So now I still listen to the old stuff and a few bands like Toxic Holocaust etc.

American black metal is shit, there's no true atmosphere or depth. 1 or 2 american solo black metal artists can express a bit of it but in general it's shit.

Some of my favorite USBM bands are Yellow Eyes, Anicon, Shadow of The Destroyer, Grand Belial's Key, Hellgoat, Profonatica, Royal Arch Blaspheme, Abazagorath, Cult of Daath, Morbosidad, Unholy Crucifix (Started in Norway but moved to the US), Vesterian, and several more. The point here is that you have to dig deep to find the good stuff.

Some black metal can be as brutal as Death Metal but not often. Also a lot of the corpse paint and posing looks incredibly clownish. There is a few exceptions but honestly the exceptions seem to be bringing black metal back into death metal realms and attributes with these exceptions.
