The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

One of the great voices in Rock and Roll history.
That distorted guitar is wild for the time.
It's downright dirty. Too bad it's mixed so low
Sounds like a Big Muff.
@@boataxe4605Or a Maestro or a London Fog fuzz box. Big Muffs are great! They are fantastic for bass guitar also.
@@boataxe4605wasn’t invented yet. Dallas arbiter or a treble booster
Eric Burden sang with soul-emotion!
Always did . Still IS❗️
They really were one of the all time greats the most notable thing about this performance was is that its a live recording and that highlights the sheer professionalism of the band So very good.
The Animals would break up a month after this performance, so it’s nice to see this final hurrah. Eric Burden then formed a new group called Eric Burden and the Animals. Chas Chandler (on bass) would go on to manage Jimi Hendrix and Slade, so he arguably benefited significantly from the breakup.
It's spelt Burdon . No e .
The original drummer, Steele, has already been replaced in this video,
They didn’t seem too thrilled to be there.
Second version of The Animals were underrated.
@@davidgibbs381....looks like the organist Alan Price was replaced here too.
Linda (Eastman) McCartney stated in her book of 60’s rock and roll photos that Eric Burdon was a true soul man. No one could reproduce the feel of the original African American singers the way he could. Eric was once quoted that American blues spoke the the British youth. He said, coming from working-class Manchester, John Lee Hooker singing “I got a job in a steel mill, shucking steel like a slave…” was very relatable and relevant to them.
i thought he was from Newcastle
Eric was from Newcastle, which would give more credibility to your theory as that city was way poorer than Manchester.
Eric was such a great singer!
This version is much better than the studio version.
Yes very clean vocals
Agreed
Great live version, RIP Hilton Valentine.
What a sound?! That tune awesome and voice - very underrated band!
I wonder how Hilton got that nasty fuzz sound back then, monstrous.
The best song by the Animals. Thank you Animals from a boomer.
My favorite for sure.
No way, Jose. "House of the Rising Sun," followed by "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood," and in third place, "We Gotta Get Out of This Place." And an honorable mention of "See See Ryder." 👍
@@Jim_L .. This seems to always happen whenever the words 'best' or 'greatest' are used. That's why I always say 'favorite'. P.S. Those are all great songs on your list IMO.
@@blujay9191 I like your thought process. I'm with you. I will often use phrases like "one of the best" or "some of the best" or "one of the greatest." Because this sort of thing is simply subjective. 😃
Barry Jenkins from the Nashville Teens on drums!! Such a rockin' performance... even if it was one of the last they did as the "original" group, seeing them perform live still is a treat 🥹🐾✨️
Barry Jenkins is the organ player. John Steel is the drummer
@@SwingingCreeper Dave Rowberry is actually on the keys here! John Steel left the Animals in February of 1966, and was replaced by Barry Jenkins - who also joined Eric when he formed the New Animals after the "original" Animals broke up in August!
Awesome! I love The Animals! 😎💜
Great live sound. You can tell Ed Sullivan was serious about a true live performance.
Eric Burden fantastic voice and loads of. Talent one of a kind
OH MY GODDD best gift for a school trip 🙏🥹 (I'm in Ireland right now, from France 🇮🇪❤️🇨🇵)
A fantastic voice and band that brings memory back to life of a whole generation.
The Animals was one of 60s musical bands on an oral report I did as a high school sophmore. It was social studies and. I remember getting into a fierce debate with the conservative teacher as he insisted the music was the main cause of drug abuse.
My Favorite song from The Animals
Perfection 💙 The best blues/rock band from the 60's
About freakin' time!! 👍👍
I love The Animals and the original Animals appeared on American Bandstand on Saturday October 8,1983 singing “The Night”😀👍🏿🎉🎆🎊🎼🎸 R.I.P Chas Chandler and Hilton Valentine😞🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿
Don't forget Dave Rowberry. RIP to him, too.
Hilton was the greatest guitarist that is totally forgotten today
Hilton was hardly a great guitarist by a long shot. He played mostly a rhythm part, and I can’t think of a single example of him doing a solo with any complexity.
@@chasbodaniels1744 Live in Berlin, German TV. Open your ears
@@anthonytripp2251 I’ll need more specific information than that to find your dubious example of Hilton showing any skills beyond what I could play half asleep, drunk and on a left handed instrument. Good guy, but he’s strictly a chord-based rhythm player with the occasional flourish.
How good it sounds Eric Burdon and Animals in this presentation, no matter how time had gone. What a performance unique.
My brother used to listen to the group all the time and whenever he got his allowance he was always going out and buying more and more albums🦜 personally my group was The hermits💔 I mean they were so cute 🥰🥰 and as I speak their name I really wonder whatever happened to them❤❤❤ boy oh boy how time flies bye because I was just a kid 💔🦜 who had a big time crush on the group😜😜😜
Last time I googled it, Peter Noone was living in Santa Barbara, California, and still performing😮.
I saw the Hermits and the Animals together in June of 66
Haha I was born in March of 66. I remember this song though
Peter Noone does a radio show on Sirius/XM. I think it's on the 60s channel. He tells stories from his encounters with other bands of the time and plays music. It's really good and worth checking out.
@@recordguy43211966, great time to be a kid and right smack dab in the middle of being completely submerged in all of this amazing pop culture! Animals a big part of it!
The first single I ever bought. Of course I love this!
ONE OF THE GREATES SONG OF ALL TIME..
wow wow wow love this band rock n roll forever
Nostalgia Deluxe 😊
What a voice Eric HAD
Fantastic ❗️
📻🙂
thank god for ed & the animals, A very classic song.
Been waiting for this post. Great classic from the pens of Carole King and the late Gerry Goffin
OMG live! And phantastisc!❤
Thanks I always like the look on Ed’s face when he introduces “Animals” on his shows.
Have a great day!
Bassist Chas Chandler would go on to manage bands and brought an unknown guitarist to England. That person was Jimi Hendrix.
I believe he also managed Slade
Always remember cranking up this song on the radio in Dad’s car back in the day! Awesome song
Todos los instrumentos suenan espectacular y la voz de Eric siempre fue magnífica.
Talent!
It's well-passed time these glorious little gems of rock history saw the light of day. Personally, I wish music were still good enough that we could all gather 'round the boob-tube on Sunday nights; kids; parents & grandparents to see what was new and hip. This IS what American Culture was at the time. Snapshots of History.
It all went by too fast. Wish it would’ve lasted longer. At least there are videos. I have Ed Sullivan on DVD. Not sure if this is on there. I’ll have to check.
This song just grooves- they were so good! Perfect band for that VOICE!
Could be wrong, but I think this is a Goffin/King ( Carole!) tune?
This song was written by Carole King and Gerry Goffin.
My favorite Animals song. Used to have the 45rpm b/w "Cheating"
Eric bourdon & The Animals amazing !
The fuzzy guitar totally rocks. Could have been the first metal song had it been longer.
Could’ve been a Maestro fuzz box hooked up to that Fender Telecaster and a Fender Super Reverb or a Fender Princeton amplifier with the tremolo turned up high.
What the hell happened at 1:01?...Where's the organ fill? But a month earlier Chas Chandler(Bass) saw and heard Jimi Hendrix for the very first time at the Cafe Wha? on July 5th. And the rest, so they say, is Rock Guitar History.
Technical difficulties.
They didn't replicate the keyboard fill from the record.
They are playing live here and there is no piano onstage, just organ. On the record there is a jazzy piano fill there.
@@rhopen Exactly, "Don't Bring Me Down" is one of their best and it's from my favorite band from the '60s.
That's not the only song they performed that night on August 14. The Animals also did a cover of Sam Cooke's "Shake." Hopefully, the Ed Sullivan Show channel will post it soon.
Awesome✨
Great heavy guitar .
underrated big time
How is this “underrated”? That comment is the go-to for lazy people with no real point to make. Sorry dude, but it’s lame
Should’ve been bigger than Jagger.
They were awesome they didn't write alot of their hits that's probably why they were underrated I guess
The Animals aren’t underrated lol they’ve always have been considered one of the best rock bands to come from the British Invasion in the 60s.
I hate comments like this, I bet The Byrds Turn, Turn, Turn is like super highly underrated big time too
I love the lyrics to this song. Carol King I heard wrote the words.
GRANDE BANDA. PEGADA BLUES. ALAN PRICE E ERIC BURDON ARREBENTAVAM COM TUDO.
Love!!!! ♥️🇺🇸
The lead singer was Eric Bergren. He was the singer and was pretty good at it and was also a good listener
I saw Eric’s short lived band Night Shift at the Golden Palomino in Huntington Beach December’69
They were on top of their game!
The Animals Best song IMO. Tom Petty and the heartbreaks did a faithful cover in their early years!
“It’s my life,” “We gotta get out of this place,” also groovin’.
Great !👍 Thank you .!😍🎼🎙🎸🎹
Oh hell, i forgot this existed. THANKS
E o baixista Chass Chandler foi o empresário de ninguém menos que Jimi Hendrix!
Kyllähän musiikkia on osattu tehd❤
I thought the Animals would go on, and on, watching this performance, in late Summer 1966, following the release of Animalization, their best album by far. A year later, that band was gone, only Eric remaining, with "new" drummer Barry Jenkins, in "Eric Burdon and the Animals".
Barry Jenkins is also present in this performance, as he replaced John Steel during the final months of the original Animals’ incarnation. He would be the only member of the ”The Animals” to join Eric Burdon in the later “Eric Burdon and The Animals”
I haven't heard that song since the 60s
You just stop listening to music all these years? lol
Bring back those days. I miss them.
I got to meet Hilton Valentine a few years before he died at a concert in Geneva, New York. I had to complement him on his guitar work on this song. It is one of the best songs they ever did.
Seems they are actually playing and not miming. :-)
Live performance on Ed Sullivan.
Absolutely live.
Absolutely amazing.
One of my most favorite animal songs
Top👍🏆💣👍🇧🇷
I have & play Animal's 'greatest hits' on cassette (not as easy these days) and War's 'greatest' on CD. Recognize Eric for being a great bandleader/organizer beyond his vocal talents.
More please
Great souls i do believe.🦋
Hitbound on Boss Radio KHJ-Los Ángeles
Why don't you put up FULL EPISODES? This is a legendary TV show, Ed Sullivan is a legendary host, much imitated.......yet there are only a five or six episodes that seem to be available! And that's only recently! Most of the world DOESN'T know what this show was really like! I love the music clips, but the show was much more! PLEASE: put up FULL EPISODES. With commercials, if possible! The four Beatle appearances are available full length with commercials. Then there's one from 1961 that floats around. And that's about it! Everything else is just music clips, a few comedy clips! PUT UP FULL EPISODES!
Love me some Animals!!!
I got "bumped" from the Sullivan show.
Not Alan Price anymore who plays organ but the substitue is ok and for this song very suitable...great tune !
Another 4x3 Ed Sullivan clip rendered 16x9. On a 16x10 monitor you get black bars top and bottom, on a 4x3 black bars all around.
Probably my favorite Animals tune. Not sure what happened to the piano riff mid-song, tho.
The low energy drummer is sure something...
That guitar riff was sounded heavy for that period of time...
Don't Bring Me Down is great, but We Gotta Get Out Of This Place is better, IMHO.
a month later Chas Chandler brought Jimi Hendrix to London
Eric Burdon ❤
POST MORE OF THE SUPREMES
I think the date is incorrect
You are correct. This performance actually aired on April 17th,1966.
@@anthonykimball7463 perhaps this is a rerun date since it’s August.
@@kenq1363 Yes, very possibly. However, this performance was originally broadcast on the date I mentioned.
I prefer The Plants. 😁
😃
The keyboard player is no Alan Price
This guy is Dave Rowberry (1940 - 2003).
This must of been not too long before Chas met Jimi Hendrix
Indeed--only a few weeks after this performance, The Animals broke up, so Chas convinced Jimi to travel to England and recruited Redding & Mitchell to form the JME.
Eric Burdon looks quite sexy in those pants in that stance at the microphone. Great voice too.
Three of the guys have hairstyles so extreme 60s they look like wigs!
Who's on keyboard? I can't see his face but it doesn't look like Alan Price.
Dave Rowberry (1940-2003). When this performance was filmed, he had actually been in the band for over a year at that point, as Alan Price had departed in May 1965.
🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧
I just noticed there all wearing the same shoes exactly on they’re feet’s.
were the animals before the doors?
*1960s 100%*
Just before they broke up and Chas Chandler brought Jimi Hendrix to London.
*_"Wild!_*_ ... Groovy, man! ... Far-out, brother!"_
Like the drummer's 'cool' attitude here. Looks like he's (and perhaps equally as well with the wannabe 'hipster' on the keys) just going through the motions and merely wants to get it over with - likely giving a rat's arse who he's in fact playing for, or of even Sullivan himself.
The keyboardist is Dave Rowberry, who had replaced Alan Price.
Rowberry’s musicianship and jazz experience contributed to The Animals’ success. He looked liked Alan Price, but his personality was less aggressive.
Who’s the drummer, definitely not Eric Steele
Barry Jenkins. After the original “The Animals” folded, he went on to join “Eric Burdon and The Animals”
He was so sexy!
