- Alex Ligertwood's intro to this version of the Ian Thomas classic covered by Santana on their 1982 album "Shango" still gives me chills every time I watch it. So grateful to have been there.
The Magic of Santana are Europe's premier Santana show, regularly featuring Original Members of Carlos Santana's band upon request.
The Magic of Santana are the first Santana "tribute" band Tony Lindsay and Alex Ligertwood have ever performed with. In 2012 we hosted the first concert in over twenty years where Tony Lindsay and Alex Ligertwood shared a stage together.
Alex Ligertwood was Lead Vocalist for Santana from 1979-1994. He has also performed with The Jeff Beck Group, The Senate, Brian Auger's Oblivion Express, the Average White Band, Narada Michael Walden, David Sancious, and others.
Tony Lindsay is an 11x Grammy Winner and has been the Lead Vocalist for Santana from 1991-2015. He has worked with Aretha Franklin, Teddy Pendergrass, Lou Rawls, Steve Winwood and Curtis Mayfield, and others.

Alex is an incredible singer and SO underrated. This such a kick ass song! Great post.
Along with Steve Perry, Jimi Jamison, Bobby Kimball, Mickey Thomas, and Richard Page, Alex Ligertwood has one of the golden voices of the 80's. There were so many great singers in that era, and I don't think we'll ever see that kind of rich pool of talent ever again in rock history.
Alex Ligertwood is the Robert Duval of rock.

I think this is even better than the first time I heard it back in 1987, Ligertwood , Lindsay combo is really the best combinations !!!!......to top it all off the icing on the cake is that tall guitarist.

The guitarist isn't that tall, the other guys are all short lol. Alex is only around 5'6" and Tony is 5'8". As for the best version, nah.. The live versions Santana did of it in 82/83 are the best. There are several amazing live bootlegs out there, look for Montreal 1982, and Tokyo 1983 with Greg Walker on vocals it's hard to choose which is better of those two, but both are incredible and far better than this. The song was originally written and performed by Canadian artist Ian Thomas and appears on his 1981 album The Glider.

CARLOS SANTANA IS ONE OF THE BEST MUSICIAN FROM THE WORLD.
Just happened upon Santana live at the US festival 1982 had forgotten how damn good Alex was....best lead singer they've ever had!

I've always loved Alex Ligertwood's vocals during his time with Santana. So unique and powerful.
I need to watch this classic groove (and try to sing along) many many time's per year.. Alex will never be repeated.. and the whole band is beautiful

I was 9 years old when this song was released and I love it since then. I'm 49 today and have to say this gentleman's voice is intact and is one of the best voices ever in the music world. Thanks for the gift of music.

I didn't know it was possible to fall in love with a song twice. I remember hearing 'hold on' on a greatest hits album and couldn't stop playing it and had to learn it on guitar there and then. I'm now sat at my desk at work and boom, fell in love again with this version. It was at 2.30 the hairs on your neck stick up....Such a great song and perfectly executed too...
Yeah. I know exactly what you mean. I had the honour of playing organ at this gig (was in the band for six years), and, boy, the intro to Alex' version of "Hold On" was a perennial highlight.

@@johncoupland3334 Thanks for the compliment! With this band, I used the Hammond B3 (a 1968 Frankensteined with a '72 generator) with a 760 Leslie, a Yamaha Motif XS6, and a Nord Stage 2.

This performance is only possible because of a great Canadian, Ian Thomas, who wrote amazing music for so many artists.

Saw Alex and Brian Auger in Trieste,Italy in July 2015 and was blown away by their performance....two great guys at the total top of their game....keep rocking guys you are just brilliant....from a dedicated fan

Alex my favorite also. Carlos likes to change his sound, including vocals. I prefer Alex, Rolle and Walker. I don't care for the last few albums. No more rap or hip hop musicians.

Makes me forget I'm washing dishes:) Thankfully no one is around...especially when I try for the high notes like at 2:29 I sound like a cat being strangled. LOL I never heard of Pine Knob. Did a search and Santana has played there a lot, plus many other great bands.
