    After reading these comments I was concerned about my choice to change to the Delonghi. My Breville crapped out after a year with bad rubber gaskets and started leaking. I'm so happy with the Delonghi, it is much quieter, no mess and the issue about the grinder not having enough settings is a no an issue. It took some time to set it up but WOW when you do.

    I’d prefer the breville. I like the ability to adjust manually.
    Your grind is very important, more adjustment is very beneficial, especially if you like to experiment with different coffee’s and roasts.
    Your leveling and tamping is also important. Leveling before tamping makes sure the density of your puck is consistent. If your density is inconsistent, you end up with channeling. Yes the puck is going to look nice and level, but I am confident that the density is not consistent on the outside edges of the puck from the Delongi.
    The polish is also contributes to a good extraction, and poor polish can also attribute to channelling.
    And lastly, learning milk the manual way helps you in the long run. And my experience with the panorellos is while the milk is ok, but it’s never perfect, and you have very little adjustment that you can make to improve it.
    If you want a machine where you don’t need to learn technique, or the factors into a great coffee, then the delongi is the machine.
    If you like detail, and tweaking things to your liking, then the barista is the machine.
    My opinion, while the barista express has its faults, it stays truer to coffee making than the delonghi.

      If you’re looking for an entry model, I think the Batista Pro is worth the extra money. The Barista express has everything you’d need to start off right. The Barista Pro, $200 more, has all of that plus a few awesome features. It is incredibly easy to program to your liking as it has a nice LCD display with smooth dials. The barista is programmable, but I didn’t think it was as easy. The Pro also heats up from cold in less than 3 seconds. Superior steam wand and pump. It’s a little sleeker and I just appreciate it for everything it is. They are both great options but consider, it will last you if you take care of it so there won’t ever be another need to buy one. Put the money down for the happiness and good coffee ahead

    I have a Breville 870XL. To prevent overflow like I saw in your demo, I set the grid to single, tamp it down,
    Then do a second single. This prevents overflow almost 100% of the time. Once in a while I might get a little spillage but easy to clean up.

    •  5 лет назад

      Although I had different machine (actually using separate Graef grinder) I did exactly the same thing and I even did not think about that. I did not measure how much coffee I use, simply filled it once, tamped and then filled properly to tamp it again. I did it just because I was stopping grinding before it started to spill out and it was always not enough after tamping.
      Also with my older De'Longhi I had fixed tamper so it will be a bit weird for me with tamper I have to take out from machine. It does not look like you can use tamper right where it is without taking it out.

    • @alucardleashed
      @alucardleashed 4 года назад

      I do the same thing!

    • @AgustinEder
      @AgustinEder 4 года назад +8

      Be carefull with that. It's just a detail, but if you tamp twice, the bottom pressure will be different from the top (because you double tamp a part of your grinded coffee). This can make the brewing work differently in boths parts. I hope you understand me, i don't write english very well.

    •  4 года назад +7

      @@AgustinEder Not exactly. It will be different only if first tamp was with higher force than second. I usually tamped it once just to make more space for coffee and filled it more. Second tamp was more careful, stronger and with twist so it still compressed both layers.
      Forces always try to equalize. If first part is not compressed too much, then you will first compress second part to the same pressure, then you will compress both at the same rate. Just try to avoid tamping it too hard for first half.
      It's also nice to get stationary spring-loaded tamper. It works similarly to torque wrench. You push portafilter against that and it clicks when you reach force you set. I did not use that but I've seen something like that in Poland and Germany. I used a bit more primitive version. With my old DeLonghi with built in tamper I stopped when force was enough to move espresso maker. It was quite light so it won't work with bigger machines.
      I find this method much more precise than tamping by hand. Stationary tamper is already leveled and you can use one hand to push portafilter against that. Because you have long handle, you can easily keep it level.
      After all I decided to buy DeLonghi. I would prefer manual tamper but I want americano to be prepared in one shot. Breville requires moving cup under water nozzle. I'll check what happens if you actually hold tamper lever down when taking portafilter out. In theory it should still push against coffee in basket and should make a twist. If not, then I'll get additional tamper just to get nice, shiny finish. You can always consider it to be pre-tamper that simply makes filling basket easier with less mess.

    I had the Delonghi for 2 months then back it went! It still has issues the engineers need to work on: annoying leaking, grinder failures, weak power for frothing... and stuff here and there that need to be reengineered, plus you have no control over pressure and grinding because of the double wall baskets... Even if you got yourself a fitting single wall basket, the integrated grinder doest grind fine enough. Sure it looks good, and being an italian brand you easily believe this is THE machine... but no no no.... I now have the breville barista express and i am loving it. Delonghi customer service is terrible. It definitely needs to go through R&D and Quality control again and again. Maybe a V 2.0 focused on more demanding customers will be really good. I am lucky all tis happened during this pandemic, because the store took it back immediately, no questions asked. So, if in doubt... Go Breville.

    A tip for not making a mess when grinding on the Barista Express: Only grind the amount you’re going to use, and stop about mid way to lightly tamp the grounds (just let the tamper’s weight do the work). The rest of the grounds should fall right into the basket. I also use the razor tool to make sure that the tamp is straight and that there’s enough coffee in there, which helps with consistency. EDIT: The manual mode is where it’s at on this machine (you can control the time of the pre-infusion and then the time of the pump at full pressure and be able to make things like lungos or play with ratios).

For less of a mess while grinding a double shot of coffee into the portafilter, I simply put it on the single grind mode, run the grinder, tamp, then I run another single shot grind but stop it manually before it overflows, then I tamp again. LOL like everyone with the Breville she's learned the "portafilter shake" that's required to settle the grounds and prevent Breville's too-shallow basket from overflowing during grinding. But at 5:17 the 13 sec extraction for a 2 oz shot on the Breville looks to me like it was WAY under-extracted (and based on the gauge I would also have considered that low pressure) so since it looks like she gave it a vigorous tamp I'm guessing the grind was a click or two too coarse for those beans. Even the 20+ sec draw on the De Longhi seems like a short pull.

    Cheap and good solution to avoid mess is to get yourself a dosing ring, then you will get everything inside the portafilter. Then you have the option of either buy a WDT (needle tool) or a leveler as many have mentioned. Then tap, and you have zero mess, good distribution of the coffee and even better coffee result.
    The tap function is nothing I'd trust, because you get a pile of coffee after grinding and then you just press it all down without leveler or distributor. That means more coffee in the center which will get pressed down. For a beginner it's both easy and smooth, but for getting a great cup of espresso or any other kind.
    Another thing, if you pull out the portafilter from the DeLonghi to distribute and/or level up the coffe, then put it back for the taping, that will result in another dose of coffee. So basically you will have to turn the mashine off while taping the coffee and then turn it on again.

    Nice presentation. Suggestions: when you show a part, actually show it ... don't "wave it around in the air." Even better would be inserting a still photograph as your describe the part ... especially on items that have words written on them (e.g., the "foam wand" on the DeLonghi. Best Wishes.

Keurig is a quick convenient way to get an OK cup of joe, but if you want a fancy espresso based drink...like a latte, or cappuccino, these machines are what you really need. Much more learning and technique are required though to get a great drink.

    • @BrentGoodale
      @BrentGoodale 4 года назад +1

      Apples and oranges my friend. Not a good comparison to make. You want an upgrade from Keurig? Buy fresh beans within 2 weeks of roast date or less. Grind before brewing with a burr grinder. Get a clever brewer or an aeropress and you’ll be living in a different coffee world. Keurig is for people that want a cup of water down burnt roasted coffee fast to get the drug with No Origin flavors just burnt coffee that you been accustomed too. I would almost rather take a caffeine pill than use a keurig. I owed one for years then did what I suggested above and now I’m hanging with the real coffee gods.

    For the specialista, is it possible to do the espresso and milk at the same time due to the double boiler?
    Also, for the grind, is there a way to even it out before tamping?

    • @ecscoffeeinc
      @ecscoffeeinc  5 лет назад +10

      It is technically not a dual boiler. Delonghi calls it a second heating system. It does not allow you to do both at the same time. As for the grind, you could take it out and even it manually but it sort of defeats the purpose of the whole thing. We see this machine more for a beginner that wants a nice espresso but not a tonne of technical requirements, knowhow or adjustments.

This is the reason I replace my Breville 800ESXL! I couldn't froth anymore because the steam was way too weak. Now, after only 4 months, and $600 + later the same thing. Any advice?

      Delonghi chose to go that route for the home user, to fake the crema like Nespresso does, the Breville gives a true crema which contains all those yummy oils extracted at the right temperature and pressure. Wish Breville offered a naked portafilter with that!

      @Pun Jab I "Fake Crema" comes from coffee being forced through a through a double wall basket with holes, yielding light airy foam that vanishes almost immediately... imagine that. A single wall basket at the proper pressure, grind and dosage yields true crema that is thick, long lasting and the espresso will flow like warm honey, not water - as evidenced by my La Pavoni video.

      With the Barista Express you get more control. What drinks were you trying to make? Usually it does have to do with the bean, and if you have used oily beans, the grinder may not be functioning properly as the oils have built up on it. Try to ensure a few things. 1. Clean Grinder. 2. Fresh coffee. 3. The right grind. 4 Even tamp with enough pressure.

    Observations:
    1) Great job pointing out the features and comparing the competing machines.
    2) the intro jingle you use is a GRATING turn off! Perhaps consider changing it?
    3) Wendy is a great appealing presenter and a damned sexy lady. She makes me want to come back to your channel and consider purchasing from you (just sayin')

    Nice Video!!! Would you compare the DeLonghi with the Breville Oracle? Greetings from Germany

      HI Kristian, It would not be a fair comparison as the Oracle is much more of a machine than the Delonghi at a much higher price point.
