Hi Liz. Really good tutorial. I have thought about buying some oil pastels. I like the idea of using them as a sort of base and going over with pencils to shade. I didn't know acrylic paint could be used as well. That's great! Thanks very much for sharing this technique!🙋👍

I’m glad it was helpful. I did mention in the video that it doesn’t work going over them with pencils as they are so oily. The pencils don’t really lay down over them. As I’ve been finishing this image, I’ve found that they do lay down over the areas that i painted on where the oil pastels had been thinned with Gamsol, the pencils did not ‘take’ at all where I simply spread the oil pastels with q tips or cloth. I personally don’t think it’s worth spending your money on them for coloring books. I will not be buying more, but keep looking for ways to use these that I already have.

@@LizatHome Yes, that makes sense. Thanks for clarifying that for me!😄👍I already have the Kingart water soluble crayons and they dry down nicely and i can use pencil over them. I think i'd better stick with what i already have..I appreciate your input Liz! So much to learn!😄🙋

Can you blend oil pastels with turpentine and or baby oil to spread the pigment? I’ve tried Q-tip method before just to spread the color.

Yes, both would work, turpentine is a solvent and probably a better idea because the turpentine evaporates and just leaves the pigment behind. The baby oil is more of a medium and so takes so much longer to dry and may leave a slight residue behind.

Would nail polish remover work to blend?

I have never tried it, it would be interesting to try.
