Gates Timing Belt Noise! Idler Bearings or Belt?

  • After approx. 8-9k miles I started noticing a noise from behind the timing belt cover that sounded suspiciously like a timing belt idler bearing that had gone bad. I had replaced all of the bearings with brand new Gates components shortly after I purchased the van. Unfortunately I didn't have the garage space or the tools to further diagnose the issue so I had to take it to a shop. The shop (Toyota) initially agreed and though it was a bad idler bearing but after further investigation found that it was just the timing belt itself that was making noise. They found nothing wrong with the belt itself or the way it was installed. In the end I had a brand new Toyota timing belt installed and as of now no noise from behind the timing belt cover.

    Had this noise on my 2007 Toyota Highlander 3.3 after belt, water pump, idler, tensioner. I replaced the Mitsuboshi belt that came in the kit, with a Toyto OEM belt. Several hundred miles, so far so good!

    @1lifejourney , you have no idea how relieved I am coming across this video of yours... I searched high and low for words like "engine ringing noise" , "water pump" , "tensioner" etc... Good God.
    I just changed my timing belt to GATES Micro-V, few days back.. And my car have this damn ringing noise which can be heard even in the cabin! It's not gone even 100km yet!
    I was so worried it was the tensioner, bearing, or whatever... Even brought back to the shop and the mechanic boss said it was fine. But never did he tell me this belt has this sound. NOW I know.... And who would have knew that the BELT could cause such a high pitched sound!
    Bless you for posting this up.. At least I now know it's not an issue with any other parts of my engine/belt/alternator area... BLESS YOU!

    The good news... Your bearing is not about to fail and break your engine, your cam bearing is not grinding away, nothing is broke. I have this same issue, with a Toyota belt currently. Has been off and on for a year. It really does sound like grinding metal or a bearing grinding away. Turns out it is very common and from what I have found, not something to worry about. I have not come across anyone yet online that had this issue and then had the belt fail. Many have had the issue for years and no problems, taken to Toyota mechanics and was told it is pretty common, is the belt making the noise and is ok. There must be some kind of interaction between the belt and pully that is causing a resonance of some sort, like when you rub a wet finger around the rim of a wine glass causing a high-pitched ringing tone. I chased this noise down expecting a failing idler. I took the cover off and inspected everything. took the tension off the belt and free spun the idler, and inspected the cam pulley to make sure it was not maybe rubbing against the packing plate of the cover, my cam bearings are in good shape. Isolated the sound to the area of the forward cam pully. I used an automotive stethoscope. When I put the probe on the metal around the pully, there is no squeal, just the typical loud rumbling hum of the bearings turning/moving parts. the squealing sound is only heard with your ears in air. The belt is putting out some kind of whistle that sounds like metal on metal squealing. I inspected my belt carefully, looks brand new, no abnormal wear, all edges still crisp and sharp, no metal filings, no dirt or grime, no rubber dust all good. I just wish I knew how to stop the squeek without doing a whole timing job again. But, super relieved it is not something breaking.

    HI,
    Love the vid.
    This is exactly the noise I was chasing in my daughter's MCU26 (2006) Highlander (Kluger in AU) V6.
    I took both drive belts off (A/C, p steer & alternator) and ran the motor- still had noise.
    I took the top cover off the timing belt. The noise was more obvious but not specific to the idler which is in full view. To test it I got a spray bottle with water and lightly sprayed water on the timing belt (outside surface) with the motor running. After spraying for a few turns the noise stopped and the engine was a quiet as a mouse. Hence it is the belt.
    --> So here is a method to see if it is a bearing or belt.

    I've had this same exact sound on my 2003 Avalon with a 1MZ-FE engine. There were lots of opinions on the internet about what was causing the noise. I first replaced the tensioner, but that didn't help. Today I removed the top plastic timing belt cover and just hosed down the belt with a carburetor cleaner spary. I emptied the can with the engine running all the time. So far, the noise is gone. I know you have to warm up the engine before the noise appears. My timing belt was a Toyota OEM and it has about 16K miles on it. The car has 94K miles on it. I wish my mechanic would have replaced both timing belt idler pulleys when he did the job. He replaced the cam seals, crank seal, timing belt and water pump and gasket. Your video really helped a lot. Thanks.

    I have done a few Toyota 3.3 timing belts. I always do the water pump. They can be a pain on these engines, if you can't back the studs out. The metal backing plate, behind the timing belt can easily be tweaked, and it will cause rubbing noise.

    • @lizard944
      @lizard944 4 года назад +3

      True. If you get too aggressive at bending the third cover to get the pump out, you can bend it and the idler roller will rub against it.

    I've had similar issues with cam/timing belts over the years. For timing belts with manually adjustable tensioners, I have managed to play with the belt tension in tiny little increments to dial out noise to practically zero. Some of these aftermarket belts are really sensitive to tension and also the surface finish of the gears. Sometimes it pays to slightly scuff the surface of the gears to take the gloss off them if any. Not sure why this is... but it's very annoying!

    I am sure Gates are the OEM supplier for a lot of vehicles - I see they are the most costly belts when looking on parts websites. Noise issues are hard to track down without replacing lots of parts - could be tensioner, contamination etc ...... not easy stuff to diagnose. Suggest one of the Toyota message boards.

    When I hear those type of noises, I hit outside belts and accessories (alternator, ac, ps pumps) with wd40 to eliminate the outside before I contemplate the “inside”. If you suspect engine internal issues, I get a long handled screw driver putting the metal tip to the engine block and put my ear to the plastic end of the driver to pick up noises.

    It's not the new belt or the pulley, it's something that is loose under the timing belt cover, check for other things. It's a metal rattling sound.

    • @JohnNorris411
      @JohnNorris411 Год назад +2

      No, it is the belt. I have gone through the entire system with a fine-toothed comb and mechanics stethoscope, even checking the cam bearings. This is unfortunately a common issue. Not sure of the science behind how the belt creates the noise at the front pully but somehow it does. But does not seem to cause any damage to the belt itself or other parts. I know you hear that and you think for sure this is metal on metal, this is a metal grinding sound, but somehow rubber on metal-toothed pully is doing this. People that spary watter on the belt find the sound goes away for a minute. People that put on a different timing belt makes the noise go away, if it was something loose or metal on metal these things would not make the sound stop.

    Toyota service records show drive belts and timing belt replacement 10k miles and 2 years ago. The drive belts are Gates brand. So I don't know if that is what that dealership stocks or what. But I'm betting it's a Gates brand timing belt in there also.

But if I spray water on the belt, Voila! silence for an hour or so. I am going to do the job again , this time OEM Toyota belt. I'm calling BS on it being the timing belt. The pitch of this noise is definitely the cam sprocket. I've bumped enough metallic tools into them and recognize the "ring" produced. You probably had a few bolts come loose from the third cover and caused it to rub on the sprocket.

      I believe your comment comes closest to explain this phenomenon. I have the same issue with a 2007 Toyota Camry Solara Convertible with the 3MZ−FE V6 engine. Although the car had only 48K miles on it, because of its age I had the timing belt and the associated accessories (Aisin TKT-026 Kit) replaced by a reputable mechanic shop. I noted a chirping/squeaking noise in the engine compartment on the passenger side. This happens only when the engine is at normal operating temperature and not when it is cold. After doing some research, the mechanic felt that this noise came from the timing belt, which should be replaced with an OEM belt. This was done, but the chirp came back. I loosened the bolts of the upper timing belt cover and traced the gap with a stethoscope. It appears that the noise is loudest in the area of the camshaft sprocket. Could you please elaborate on your statement "You probably had a few bolts come loose from the third cover and caused it to rub on the sprocket." Which parts are actually touching/rubbing and producing this chirp? Why does this happen only when the engine is warm? Lastly, in your expert opinion is this just "cosmetic" or is it something that needs to be attended to soon? - Thanks

      @@BlueRage When I put a small amount of silicone lube spray on the belt, the noise goes away for about 5000 miles. So I believe it's something about the belt contacting the front cam sprocket.

    Sounds like you have a noisy water pump

  • @laprepper
    @laprepper 4 года назад +4

    Sounds like you went to a crooked mechanic, the timing belt is rubber and will very rarely make that noise by itself typically it makes that noise because something is spinning, in your case one of the bearings on either the water pump the tensioner pulley or idler pulley was definitely bad so the belt was causing the Noise by spinning the component but I don't believe the belt itself was causing the compounded because you can clearly hear the metal grinding. I have a slightly similar noise of a bearing going out in my car unless it's a knocking sound but I think it's more of a grinding sound so I'm probably going to replace both knock sensors as well as take the timing belt off and check all the pulleys before I go throwing $1,000 at it to have a mechanic change the whole damn thing because I work and don't have enough tools or energy to get the whole thing done in a day and I need my car everyday

      @@automachinehead Since I know you are sitting down Mr. Arm-chair mechanic. The vehicle started off with zero issues; it just needed a new timing belt according to the mileage. The belts, pulleys and water pump were changed and shortly thereafter a metallic noise became audible after the engine warmed up. After a diagnosis, it appeared that the belt was the issue. A quick spray of brake clean or lubricant onto the cogged portion of the belt or pulley would stop the noise, however it would come back in a few hundred miles. The belt was then replaced with an OEM part and the noise was no longer. It was 100% the belt and it's a common issue on highlanders. Not the idler, not the pump... It was the belt. Now, get outside and discover that the earth is not flat.

      Bearing guides...too.
      If anyone of those goes bad..you have to do it all over again. Save yourself lots of aggravation.

    Easy, don't use Gates timing belt kits. The water pumps are garbage and the idler bearings are getting more and more common to be made in China. I had this issue with a gates timing belt on an ES300. Replaced with a Toyota belt and the noise went away.

    Good grief Dude! that sounds horrendous! I hear a high pitched metallic sound but also another rubbing noise as well... it sounds alittle better after the fix...ive got gates belts on 2 different cars..ford focus and its fine, and a probe gt and initially, it was smooth and very quiet, but developed a pulsing drone thats been a nitemare to diagnose... i replaced the tensioner, the warped timing covers, harmonic balancer ect... still there! WTF is left? i had put in belt myself along with new tensioner and all pulleys... ive torn it down 3 times since to fix... checked the idler pulleys, they Seem fine, smooth and not noisy or dried out...short of replacing the belt itself,i dont know what else to do...are such things covered under the gates warranty? i mean, the belt works, hasnt shredded or snapped and bearings seem ok so would that still be warrantiable?

    Wrong. Noise before timing belt, changed and still noice..? Sounds like the timing if off somewhere and valves hitting the pistons. Car can still function as long as it doesnt overveat and expand the valves. You should notice bad performance or non if you ever try to gun it...maybe the sound went away slightly when you retimed everything with old belt. Thats just my guess

      valves hitting pistons? no, valves are not hitting pistons and Continuing to run as a noisy engine!! when valves hit pistons, however lightly, its over and its rebuild time simple as that...if its a noninterference engine yeah timing can be off and engine will sound really horrible but the valves will not hit... but if its an interference engine, and timing is off and you hit valves, car is not gonna keep running, its game over
