These days quality is mostly on the downside for a lot of stuff now. And these low prices, usually mean you will have an issue with your new components a lot sooner than you would quality OEM parts. I go to dialysis and don't have a lot of money, but when put all my time and labor and money into my car I don't want to have to do all that again and spend more money sooner than needed. I'd rather spend an extra 150 bucks. Thanks man. Made up my mind

I got lucky with the last gates kit I got last year and everything was from Japan but probably the last time I get it.

The gates kit for my 14 Chevy Cruze has pretty much all of its parts made in Europe France UK and the tensioner being made in Canada

Interesting. I got the gates kit, similar part number (TCK328RB) from amazon in December 2019, and the tensioner and all idlers were from Japan.

That is interesting! I would be willing bet different batches get different country of origins. Thanks!!

I have a 2000 Outback, just used the Gates made in China kit on it. It's an old car that I care about, but I think it will be just fine for 100,000 more miles. The belt will probably outlive the head gaskets... 😆

nice video. with recent current events its understandable how we all tread water lightly in such a touchy subject now a days. i already made up my mind years ago to boycott anything Chinese. simply you need to ask yourself this... is saving a few bucks buying a cheaper quality product worth the risk of bricking your engine?

i just got a gates powergrip timing belt kit for my 2012 sonic. the tensioner pully is made in canada, the idler pully doesnt say anything and the belt only has a few numbers on it. as far as i know, what ever belt they put in the kit is supposed to be equivalent to the oe. which in my case is the gates power grip.

In other words stick with OEM or Aisin, rather than the box of chocolates Gates kit.

    • @rallysportdirect
      @rallysportdirect  4 года назад

Don't write them off completely, much of their stuff is still oe, just this kit for some reason went the way of the Dodo :( but I don't blame you, one product can completely change your perspective on a company, either good or bad :/

Aftermarket parts are getting to be a real crap shoot any more. Chinese made bearings & seals, avoid like the plague because they will fail early. Check fitment, more on that later. Japan will outsource the manufacture of some parts but they hold their suppliers to a high degree of quality else wise they get dumped. Current problem with a timing/ water pump set (not Gates). 1993 Chrysler LeBaron w/ the 3.0 Mitsu engine. Timing belt OEM Mitsu but mfg in Thailand. Water pump has Japan cast on the housing but listed as mfg in Thailand. The water pump is an exact duplicate of the original (car has 52K miles) so the components could be made in Japan and assembled in Thailand. Anyone's guess on that one. Water pump housing (adapts water pump to engine block) is Chinese and is a a problem. The part is machined improperly & proper function is in question. The idler is Japan & appears to be high quality. O-ring & gaskets are a big question mark. If the O-ring that seals the water pump to the block fails the job will have to be done all over. Good luck everyone in this guessing game.

The big outrage was they lied, the boxes stated that all the parts were made in Japan but were not. It was not only false advertising it was also very deceitful. End of story

That kit is crap!! no other words!! a friend of mine bought it and the canada tensioner failed before 1500 miles!! i was able to press the hydraulic piston with my fingers!!

It's sad to hear stuff like that, but I felt like those exact things are why I needed to create this video. And I run the gates kit on my daily and it's been awesome for many miles, but I think it needed to be pointed out that it's no longer made in Japan. Sorry again 😔

I got a gates kit (blue belt) , and water pump with no issues .... lots to be said but at the end of the day, ... no one knows
I see OEM parts fail all the time .

@@rallysportdirect I bought a gates kit + water pump part number tckwp328 for my 2010 STi from you guys about 3 years ago. I've driven it around 30k miles with no issues yet. I didn't know about any of this when I bought it, and finding about all of this now I'm obviously worried.
I just daily it but it's still low miles, around 80k now, and obviously can't afford for this kit to fail. What would you do if you were in my shoes? I'm considering buying a better kit once this one reaches 60k...but it's pretty unsettling reading all these bad reviews.
Any help or advice would be appreciated!
