  • Just got these finished tonight, by popular demand for people who want to build Howards Honeycomb geodesic dome. I've done both metric and imperial measurements in the same file. These very basic plans should get you started building this really impressive dome.

    I was having the hardest time figuring out how to do this structure, but then I was told the frequency has to be divisible by three otherwise the points won’t link up.
    So I see your structure is a 9 frequency (9v). 9 of course is divisible by 3.
    So I’m gonna try building a 9v on sketchup and seeing where it takes me. Cheers!

    I am considering this as an option for an inner structure to projection map. Vacuum form plastic sheets to fit these hexagons and zip them together. Outer dome structure could be a slightly larger 9v Icosahedron perhaps. Or could one fit this 9v hex pattern within a 3v Icosahedron?

    Hello Paul!
    I've built so far 5 domes (3 different models) with the help of your plans from the website.
    All of them (except one which is done by the hinge method and covered in fiberglass) were done using the bevel frame. Main problem, huge problem, is the termites. So I want to switch into stressed skin, galvanized sheets, styro glued inside, combo of rivets and MIG welding, paint outside... What do you think?
    7m diameter, 3v, 1.6mm galvanized sheets... In theory it should work using your 3v plans, no? Need a diy sheet bender and should be good...
    As you said in a previous video this is probably the cheapest (and most overlooked method of building) with the main con (condensation) easy to fix with a decent layer of insulation glued on the inside...
    I think I'll have a go at a 3v and a 9v, using your plans...
    Correct me please if I said something terribly stupid.
    Greetings from the Philippines!

    • @Geo-Dome

      Yes it could be scaled up but you need to think more seriously about structural integrity, I would look to cross brace the hexagon shaped and form triangles because they are much stiffer.

    Hey Paul, first thank you for amazing job !
    I have a question and i can't find any answer, how do you calculate the dimmension of the wood that you use for all your domes ?
    Is there any formula or rules to apply ?
    Thanks for taking time to read my comment !

    • @Geo-Dome
      @Geo-Dome  3 года назад +1

      Ok there is an equation called the slenderness ratio, in Hugh Kenners book "Geodesic math and how to use it" recommendations are to not exceed 24/1 for wood, 30/1 for metal. it's a ratio of length divided by diameter, Let's say you have 50mm square strut material x 24 = strut length of no more then 1.2m. I myself use a much cruder system, I test a strut by hanging off it when it's supported at both ends, if it bends with my weight I use thicker timber. Not much of a problem with small domes but you want to be careful on big domes over 15m diameter.

    • @Geo-Dome
      @Geo-Dome  3 года назад +1

      OK it's not so simple, I have different dihedral angles on my 3v plans to keep the bevel angles all the same, if you change a triangle it will make the dihedral different so you can have the same frequency with different dihedral angles. I'll put a video together showing how to do it, just keep an eye out for it.

    Complicated design .....paul.
    Mine are all hexagons no pentagons. All the frames are 90'.
    To make the structure curve requires 'thinking out of the box'. This my secret technique.
    Nobody else is doing it .
    But when i get my first dome built the 'cat will be out of the bag' so everyone can have a go.
    Mine will not be patented, but will be registered to stop others saying i stole their idea.
    I want every dome around the world from then on to be built according to my design which has taken years to develop.
    I want Bucky Fuller to look down from above and bless me 😊
