    My Father Dodged the Draft and Refused to go to Vietnam. He was a working man himself. He cleaned windows. He was a man of Faith who thought that the church ruined what Jesus taught. He and I bonded over our love of Phil Ochs. I wish my father was still around to hear this cover. Thanks Jack! As Always!

    The song was originally written and performed by Ewan MacColl and Peggy Seeger, though I first discovered it through the legend that was Phil Ochs. I greatly appreciate all of the amazing tributes you've done for him! He was truly a one-of-a-kind revolutionary musician/bard, and you have certainly been doing these covers justice!

    I disagree with interpreting Jesus as explicitly socialist, I think he was more apolitical or centrist but as GK Chesterton said "that a good man could have his back to the wall was something everyone knew, but that God could have his back to the wall, is a boone for insurgents everywhere forever."

    • @cameronmcallister7606
      @cameronmcallister7606 2 года назад +1

      I think he is only perceived as socialist in a society run by Capitalists. Jesus gave bread and fish to people, spoke of charity and kindness, he cured his fellow man and asked nothing in return. In any normal society, we would consider this normal, but in a world where everything is a commodity we call it socialism.

    • @histori6259
      @histori6259 2 года назад +25

      I agree that describing Jesus as socialist is a bit weird, but he was undeniably political. He was a destitute theological radical, at odds with the Roman occupiers and the Judean ruling class. He advocated for community power, was disgusted by the encroachment of commerce upon the spiritual lives of the Judean people, and advocated for the downtrodden. He could be seen as the first radical in the Mediterranean and the Middle Eastern worlds, depending on your view of his actions.

    • @christophersnedeker2065
      @christophersnedeker2065 2 года назад

      @@histori6259 I think one of the things he showed is there is no purely political solution to the human condition. "And the devil taketh him up to an exedeing high mountain and showth him all the kingdoms of the earth and the glory of them and he said "all these I will give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me." He could have called down legions of angels and taken over the world if he wanted to but he knew politics might put a roof over mens heads and gas in the car it couldn't save their souls.

    • @olivierkigotho7639
      @olivierkigotho7639 2 года назад +6

      @@christophersnedeker2065 There is a political dimension to all things people do though. To be "centrist" or "apolitical" is simply to adhere to the cultural hegemony. Everyone has an ideology, as that is merely the set of ideas we use to view the world. However, not everyone is aware of the context and source of their ideology.
      Jesus was definitely counter-hegemonic as his teachings went against the previous status quo, and Jesus' teachings were egalitarian, particularly compared to the hegemonic ideologies of the time. In other words, Christianity in its founding was leftist. But to claim it was socialist is not meaningful since that concept cannot apply to that era. The song is saying that we should continue developing egalitarian ways of looking at the world and one another, and translate that into the way we act and organize society. Socialism is can be viewed as one way to do that, but there is a myriad of other ways, most of which have large intersections with each other

    great song one problem Jesus went around preaching the word of god not karl marx. Jesus did not really care about property and as far as I am aware of got all his followers to leave all their belongings behind. So in a way they made them selfs poor and Jesus did not care what 'Class' you were as long as you were willing to follow god he was happy so his fight was not really with wealth but people who did not want him to preach. - This is my opinion with everything I have heard about Jesus so your welcome to make a comment to correct me on anything.

      @@kurteisner67 I can agree with most of you there but there is still a class system because he preaches that god is the supreme authority. So in terms of socialist and communist ideas of all workers have power it kinda smashes there because god has complete control and heaven is referred to as his kingdom kind of making him a king of sorts. Plus Jesus was said to be the king of jews soooooooooo don't really see how he could not be preaching no class system at lest alone the relationship between god and humans. Human on human though I am not so sure about.

    Jesus is no socialist friend.
    He’s an absolute monarchist, and he’s the monarch.
    This man Jesus will judge the world in righteousness and rule with a rod of iron.
    And if you resist his rule, your whole body will be cast into Hell.
