One day a neighbor swore that a couple of them swooped down to where they were sitting outside and stared at them because MY feeder was empty! I had already refilled or did it right away, can’t recall. They are so entertaining and we feed one species year round in western Washington.

Good idea! Maybe a tall basket (or wicker trash can same size/little bigger than bucket) would be less labor intensive. (!) But yeah, the bucket isn't the best garden look... however i suppose we could plant a ring of tallish flowers around it when we decide on final position. Also worth noting, the whole thing could be up higher, so cats dont get any ideas that the snack bar's open.

Just a hint if my grandfather had been watching this one of the things he taught us and would fuss if he saw us doing it is pull your plug out by the plug don't hold onto the cord and jiggled the plug out. It causes the wires to break inside and then you don't get any electricity coming from the plug up into whatever the plugs connected to lamp I think the sweeper used to be the one that he would be upset about or the toaster. I noticed when you were unplugging your soldering iron it appeared on the film that you were pulling it out more by the chords and buy the plug itself. Might have been the angle of the camera so I apologize if I was wrong. I love your videos and I just had to re-subscribe because my RUclips got messed up by my son

Robbie - we are kindred spirits. The hummingbirds are my special friends too. They come to me and want me to put the water hose down so they can drink and take a bath. I have them fly up to my face and then they motion down to the hose letting me know what they are looking for. So I want to build them a bird bath and my mom is sending me a hummingbird feeder for my birthday. Now I can make them a special bird bath as opposed to buying one. I am going to add a bunch of nice smooth rocks and make it look it like a natural setting. Such a great video, thank you.

Boy, that little hummingbird was enjoying that sprinkler. If I didn't have cats I would so get one of those solar pumps for the birds in the yard. Thanks for showing your fun idea!

    • @youresoakinginit2113
      @youresoakinginit2113 3 года назад

If you can get the bath up high enough, there will be much less issues with cats. Keep an eye on them and make adjustments as needed. Lots of perches in bushes near -- but not right next to -- the bath gives them a safe feeling and also gives them a spot to wait, out of view, for their turn in the water. I'm tryna come up with a way to do a hanging birdbath with pump recirculating water, somehow, for the very reason you bring up.

There's a trick that a guy in Tucson figured out to help chickens survive our heatwaves.
You see, the chickens don't like to get IN to the bird baths to stay cool. So he found that if he put bricks in the bottom and filled up the water levels so that it was up toward the top, but not covering the bricks, the birds would sit on the bricks. The water can wick up through the masonry and keep the birds' feet cool without getting them wet.
I'm thinking that, in our super hot climate broken up bricks in the bird baths would be really helpful for our little guys. If they want to get in to the water, that's fine. But even if they just rested on the brick while they dried off, they'd still stay cooler than with rocks.
    Just a thought!

Awesome video & you have an infectious sense of joy for birds like I do so I definitely plan on making a couple of these for my backyard friends. Unfortunately I don’t have any hummingbirds yet, but I hope to attract some soon! So far I have blackbirds but the literal hundreds, house finches, tanagers, bullock’s Orioles, chickadees, blue jays, cowbirds, house sparrows, robins, & a couple of hawks that have decided my back yard is an excellent hunting ground for their dinner. It used to really distress, but I remind myself that they likely have families of their own to feed somewhere. I also have 8 squirrels at last count that help themselves to the bird food & the squirrel food. Lol. Thanks for the video. You did an excellent job explaining what you were doing & why. I’m disabled so I enjoy watching wildlife because it’s free (ok not really bc I spend a small fortune on bird seeds. Lol) & it’s so entertaining. Thanks so much!

The universe gifted me the coolest chip + dip dish this weekend after watching this video.
I angry-picked up the garbage surrounding the dumpster at my apt. complex that I got sick of looking at and, for whatever reason, I turned my head and this large, clear acrylic dish caught my eye from the open side slider.
Bonus points: it's sectioned in a way that it literally looks like a flower! Turned my frown upside down straight away. 😊
Buying a solar fountain pump TODAY and 2 types of different colored marbles to mimic the coloring of the middle and petals of a flower.
I am not a big fan of the plastic bucket look, but I have seen people wrapping planting buckets online with burlap, connected / wired paint sticks, thick rope, and those grass window shades as camouflage and will roll with one of those.

Good timing in sharing a super affordable birdbath because just yesterday I read that some male hummers can be *highly* territorial as in get away it's all *mine* stingy selfish. The article suggested placing many baths about 10 feet apart, room allowing of course.
I have a downtown 2' x 6' balcony so I'll learn what works but surprisingly I get hummers, hawks, large murders of well established crows and dragonflies to mine and my cat's delight. No fear, Toby is indoor only and politely watches the birds...no lunging at the window from my good boy! 👵🏻💞😺

A new project to put on my list of things for Next Spring, I've been working hard the last few years to make my yard full of flowers for Butterflies (especially Monarch's), Humming birds, and of course the wild birds, I have a regular bird bath but I can't lie, I often forget to fill it up, it's on the side of the house next to the side porch in one of my flower bed , So I don't see it all the time. But I want some of these to put on the porch so i can watch them from my living room window :)
