ABOUT US:
Locksmithing is what PJ knows, he grew up watching his dad locksmith. PJ started his locksmith training at age 6 by learning how to cut a key! PJ, President of CLK Supplies shows locksmith tips, does locksmith training videos as a sort of locksmith school, interviews locksmiths goes over locksmith equipment, key cutting machines, and more. If you are interested in locksmithing, want to know how to use locksmith tools, or would like to learn a few new locksmith tricks you are in the right place. Welcome!
So when we started our shop 30 years ago, our keys were $1.50. Over the past three decades we started bumping them up slowly but surely. Our standard house keys are $2.50. We already had the discussion of raising them up to $3.00 in 2024. After hearing some of the stories our customers come in with after using the instant cut machines, we figure $3.00 is pretty cheap.
Thx for sharing! -PJ
Wow so cheap very different prices compared to Germany even we don’t have kwickset keys. 5-10$ a key is normal for basic keys
Between $3-5. You two kids are a hoot! She definitely has #Lockboss potential and is the future of CLK Supplies. Way to go! 👍
I’m a #lockboss here in Central Virginia and I charge $3 for KW1 and SC1 and $4 for the mailbox keys. Those prices may be on the low side, but it’s on purpose. I’d rather be less expensive than those kiosks or other places AND I can test the keys I cut at the homeowner’s or business’ place and guarantee they will work. When prices are reasonable, folks don’t think twice about asking for extra copies. It’s a win win for everyone.
When I first started 20 years ago we were cutting standard house keys for a buck a piece. These days, now that I'm on my own, it depends on the key. KW1, SC1, etc I charge $2 for bulk brass ilco. For industrial jobs I only use brand name factory blanks I charge $3.50 each.
Since I'm mobile only I sometimes get customers who call who ONLY need keys cut, depending on where in town they are I'll refer them to the closest reputable place that can duplicate keys, be that a locksmith with a brick and mortar shop or a hardware store... I also typically advise customers to go to an Ace Hardware / True Value as their prices are usually reasonable and they usually do a fairly good job as opposed to big box stores.
The automated kiosks, at least around here, are HORRIBLE... Not only do they charge WAY more than what a simple KW1 duplicate should go for, around here, half the time they don't work...
I Charge for Kw1 and Sc1 $4.75 mail Box key $5.75
Enjoy time with with your kids is Priceless . Happy new year #lockboss
Just got done moving my kw1/sc1 prices up from 2.75 to 3 for 2024, I guess it's not too late to raise it to 3.50 . I definitely agree with others that the added value of having each of the keys checked by a #Lockboss really makes a difference.
Alice seems so surprised when they work! 😆 I really want to take some of those automated self serve key machines like the "Key me" apart.
Great info and an even better idea for us to get out and check our own areas. Thanks for this PJ! #Lockboss
Definitely updateing prices. Awesome video pj #Lockboss
Nice informative video! Let prices are all over the board around Pittsburgh, PA as well! Looks like you're girls had fun helping Dad! Mini #lockboss helpers!
Another great video PJ! It's always fun watching parents interacting with their kids in such a positive way, growing good people!
#Lockboss
Great video. Loved the bloopers. Your kids are great.
#Lockboss
Love the vid, PJ and CLK Supplies!!! 🙌🏼 #Lockboss
We recently changed our pricing. We were at $2.50 single sided standard and $4 double sided. We raised up to $3 bulk single sided kw1/sc1, $6 single sided other, and $8 double sided. We have seen a bit of pushback, but not much. Maybe $3/5/7 would be a little better, but we can always adjust back down a bit if that is the case. #lockboss
Great video PJ, cool to see you and the kids out doing a #lockboss “market survey”; thanks for doing it and sharing the results, and tell your key inspector/checker she did a great job and the Lockbosses all loved her work 😊
Been charging $2 for a KW1, going to up mine now. This #lockboss needs to make more money in 2024!
John and I enjoyed it. As someone who liked to get keys cut before he got his own machine, we saw prices all over the place. Hardware stores were generally the cheapest. Our local one only charges 1.75. Most others are more. We paid 6.50 for one once. John was saying he had never been to a KeyMe, but for that price he might not (only one that I know of around us). #lockboss
Great video and special helpers. #LockBoss
Have a Happy New Year
3 bucks for standard house keys and 5 bucks for mailbox keys that are not steel. Great video looked like your special guest had a fun time 😀 #Lockboss
We sure did! -PJ
Planning to study to be a locksmith in the future and your videos always gives me an insight on what the trade is. Really like the aspect of rekeying (Bought a big bro few months back) and slowly learning how to pick locks. #Lockboss
The local Lowes charges $3.98 for a KW1. Your key checking assistant is adorable. #Lockboss
Kw1 $3.50 seems fair that is my current price. Best keys $6.00 dollars yet I may be raising them both up some. great video #lockboss
My experience is that Ace is the lowest price but usually has the higher quality blanks (usually ILCO) and the more knowledgeable technicians. Very surprised that the 1646 from ACE didn't work. The robots tend to do only KW1, SC1, and M1. Lowe's and Holme Depot, the ones that actually have a human operating the machine) are the least professional and have the machines programmed to cut sectional keys (SC10) on the grand master blank (SC20) One thing your video proved is that you'll get the best satisfaction (quality, fit, service, etc) by going to an actual locksmith. You went to 4 places and none of them did the job you wanted: ace didn't fit and the others couldn't do 1646. Yet all of them got your money.
Thank you for doing this. I charge $2.50 for most keys. Happy New Year!! #Lockboss
One shop I work at is $4 for standard KW1/SC1/etc duplicates. The other is $5. Prices are going up in the new year though. So both locations should be around $5. Regardless of the price, customers tend to think it's too high. What's a #Lockboss to do though when manufacturers keep significantly increasing their prices every year?!
my work is located in AU Sydney - our price average for standard key cut is $8AUD so like roughly $5USD which I reckon is fair. the amount of time we spend learning keys and how to cut each one in peculiar ways for them to work, is worth the price if you're doing a good job
Love seeing the whole family involved!
My experience has always had ACE as the cheapest. The interesting part for me is that they usually just charge for the blank, not for the cutting (I know that since I've gotten a few blanks for rear shimming, and it has always cost the same!) #Lockboss
I like the music choices for this video. 😃
Thanks, PJ and key expert! Looks like the prices are all over the map. #Lockboss
43 yrs ago single sided standard keys were 2 for a dollar. Now standard single sided keys are a min 3.00 each out of shop or out of van. The price goes up from there. 7.99 is high in my opinion. Mayb 3.50 to 3.75 might b the new min. Thanks james estep locksmith co #lockboss #lockboss
I charge $2.50 for residential keys, that's .50 for the blank(that costs me .30), $1 for wear on the cutter, and $1 for my time.
#HappyNewYear #Lockboss
Happy New Year #Lockboss
Most of my work is house calls, (rekeying, adding new hardware, etc) 1st 3 keys are free - extras are $2.00 ea. I just make it up in the service fee ☺. Happy New Year to all the CLK crew & the #Lockboss community.
The automatic machines working surprised me. Although your using Kwiksh*t keys that have the lowest tolerances at working. I feel confident at charging $4-5 because we are constantly checking tolerances on our machines. Minutekey in our area is now using 'L' blanks for Schlage which are more likely to break under normal use. #LockBoss
#lockboss. Great family outing! I guess the best price is 3.50 to 4 a key. Great to see your future locksmith at work. Always enjoyable to watch RUclips videos! Also great to do business with you. Happy New Year!
Thanks 🤝-PJ
Good information. Eastern Oklahoma #LockBoss
We're around $4.50 for both the KW1 and 1646... In California. But honestly. I do feel we should charge up to $5.50 per key for those two. Keeping a business open in CA is expensive! Plus we guarantee our keys, we'll fix the key if it was too shallow or comp a new one if it ended up too deep. #lockboss
I'm at around $2.61 at the lowest for sc1 and kw1. Not so common keys like sc1345 are kinda tough to price. Lowest I go is $7.55 for those. You can usually get a good read on people for pricing. For double sided I just... well, double the price. If in bulk a drop it down a little for a happy customer. Local hardware store only do mechanical keys for automotive, and basic house and commercial keys. Those stores do anywhere from $2.50 to 5.00 for automotive mechanical keys. House/commercial keys are $1.50-2.50. They don't really make their money off keys, and this is in eastern Washington state! You'd think they'd be more expensive regardless. Hard to price keys when you're starting out as a #Lockboss.
I am definitely going to start charging more. #lockboss. Thanks for the info
Nice video and getting some info#Lockboss
Here in Tx 2.50 kw1 and 3.25 mailbox
Thanks for the excellent video. I am completely a mobile shop so what I charge for keys is always included with some job that I'm doing. Usually works out to about $4 each. #Lockboss
Great info... my employer just changed prices for regular keys from $3 to $3.25!
Oh nice! -PJ
Great test and the test helper was awesome #lockboss
Nice video- way to get the family involved. As someone who is really getting into the trade and starting a full time business ( maybe/ soon) and having a generalized business background- what I would do is something you did in the video- go to several different places- see what they charge, what their selection is since they are already selling product for their area then base your decision on the average of everything. Charge more for the less “ common “ keys for the area- in my area- we don’t have home mailbox keys- so I would charge a little extra versus the KW1 or any of the Schlage keys. I would also have a way to test them to make sure they work- which I can factor into the price. Just another ( retired) lawman and ( retired) first responder turning into a #Lockboss and locksmith.
How much fun on an outing with your kids. I've never seen a key kiosk that can cut anything othrr than KW1 or SC1. Mailbox keys are a rarity around here and I believe it's illegal to copy a USPS PO.Box key
Thanks for doing the investigative research #lockboss
Good stuff to know. I think I need to up my price a bit. ##lockboss
Alice is a #lockboss in the making!
Yes she is! -PJ
Gotcha 👍! #LockBoss
We charge 2.99 for single side cut unless specialty keys. So 3 - 5 range is good. #Lockboss
I actually went to Key Me machine and was surprised that I if I wanted to, duplicate a BEST SFIC KEY. Of course the key would mailed to me. The price was $16.00 per key. #Lockboss
Happy New Year to All!
Which keyway? Just curious.
I charge $5/key for my standard common keys. $7.50+ for anything not standard/common. Basic Metal car keys start at $15-$20
#lockboss
Great video, excellent helpers. For my area $3.00 is what I get for KW1 & SC1 however a mailbox key isn’t as popular so I can get $4 to $5 Best of all my keys work not always true with the box store. Also my Walmart Super Center quit cutting keys, which was probably a wise business decision for them. #Lockboss
Interesting! -PJ
I think 3-3.50 is fair now. I was at 2.50 for a while but went to 3 last year and have been thinking of going to 3.50 seeing as blanks aren’t getting any cheaper and I usually will code cut the first dupe and duplicate off that which a hardware store ain’t gonna do. And the machines Home Depot and lowes use are trash and rarely work. #LockBoss
not sure if anyone else noticed, butthat #LockBoss shirt has got me wanting one
Kw1 Sc1 2.50 Mail Box 3.00
Im still pretty green but my current employers of 10 years (I manage a wholesale liquor store) paid me $5 to duplicate their keys for the store. Great video! #Lockboss
Here in Iowa I currently charge $3. I’m mobile so I check them in each of the Homeowners cylinders. After this video I’m thinking of bumping up a little. #Lockboss
Good idea! -PJ
Great show nice kids # lockboss
I have been charging $3 for kw1 and sc1. Been that way for a while. #lockboss
In my little maintenance jobs I do , i usually charge $2 a key if the customer wants extra
I have been charging 1.25-1.50 for keys that work in locks that I rekey. Thinking I am charging to little. #LockBoss
I agree with you -PJ
I charge $3.65 for standard house keys but it is January 1 so I am going to raise my prices and I am going to start charging $4.00
What's charging 2.99 now I'm going to charge 3.99 thanks for the 👀 opening
Lol very funny and interesting video. Still can't believe the $7.99. We are being charging $3.50 but seeing all this plus every year normal inflation definitely will increase prices up to $5.50 for residential key (kw1-sc1) but 7.99 wow!!!
Happy new years 🎉🎉 CLK SUPPLY and all #Lockboss
Thx for sharing Gustavo -PJ
that's about what loacl stores charge in my area that is the going rate near me between $3.00 and $5.00 #lockboss
The new /next #lockboss
Ace is the only one here that actually cuts the keys here, the others use the auto machine like keyme, Here Ace is $2.99 the others range $3.99 to $8.49
Thx for sharing Steve -PJ
do ace use blue punch machines or use one of those machines that can cut different types of keys?
I enjoyed this video. I thought for sure that Billy was going to be the special guest until you said "she". Then I thought maybe you changed the wig out and turned Billy in to a female. We charge $3.75 for a KW1. Happy New Year to you and yours! #Lockboss
I get $4.75 for the first key, then $3 for each additional, same key/same time.
🤝-PJ
I've been charging $ 5.oo for standard house keys. Unless they ask for the large head keys then it goes up to $ 7.00 and the mail box key is $ 5.00 #Lockboss
Happy New year my friend..man I see no problem paying 3.50 too 5.00 dollars REMEMBER we are absolutely are professional...but charging less crates much more walk in trafficking ,which means more than likely they will buy something else why ther waiting for a key ...😎
Great points, thx for sharing -PJ
I’m at $3.50 for common housekey, if I stamp letter or number $4 #lockboss
#Lockbossfamily #Lockboss
I'm strictly mobile so keys start at $5. I do give volume discounts if they buy a bunch of keys. #Lockboss
I charge $3 for standard residential keys an $5 for mailbox keys #lockboss
Around tree fiddy (with tax)! #lockboss
The price has went up for everything how a days. I would think that $3.50 is a fair price.
#lockboss
Does that pricing include any taxes? # LockBoss
It does not -PJ
For the pass year I have been at $3ea. I think I will be going up to the $3.50 #lockboss
Nice! -PJ
#Lockinspector. #Lockboss
I’m going up on mine now #lockboss
🤝-PJ
The mailbox key definitely demands more accuracy than a kwikset & it's a little more difficult to find in most box stores. $3 for KW1 & $5 for 1646 actually seems fair. 😎 #lockboss
Is the 1646 a common keyway for mailboxes? Never had a problem copying kwikset and schlage keys but for some reason sargent, yale and arrow keys is not always a one try on the copying machine we have.
@@kurogane2xget some calipers. Machine may need calibration
Yes, 1646 is very common for mailboxes. I find they have almost no tolerance for the spacing to be off
I thought it was going to be your Mom....Your daughter looks like she really enjoyed her new Position as Key checker.. I am going to charge $3 for the Kwikset and $4 for the 1646......#Lockboss
Haha, that would’ve been funny. I like the pricing! -PJ
Our hardware store is $2.39 wow we are way to cheap #lockboss
A #LockBoss would charge $5 each or three for $10.
I know who the real #lockboss is...🤣 I charge "Three a key!".
👍👍 #lockboss
#Lockboss
#lockboss
#LOCKBOSS I am at $3 for my keys right now
Man that hurt watching a locksmith use "key me" and "minute key" machines lol #lockboss
Haha, it really hurt paying -PJ
Wow - this was certainly an eye opener!! I charge $2 for house keys currently but I will be increasing my price- Great Job Alice- #Lockboss
The real issue is what a blank key cost.
I’m curious to know why you didn’t include what a locksmith would charge.
I believe the locksmith price would wildly vary depending on the area and going to big box retail would give the most accurate general price -PJ
@@clksupplies Maybe. I would like to see if that’s accurate.
Just read the comments. Lock smith's from all over is posting their prices
@@51-FS I don’t need to read the comments. The comment I made was about the research method not the prices.
@XenobiaF I guess I miss red your comment.
$8.00 bucks A Key minimum I would never charge any less right now, especially if a stupid kiosk
is charging that why can’t we equal it
we guarantee our keys and we usually waste a key to guarantee a key
#LOCKBOSS. HAPPY NEW YEARS
Thanks Kenneth, you too!
