A good magnet will take car of it easly. Judt dont forget to put the magnet in a plastic bag, or a small plastic container the same size as the magnet to make cleaning it afterwards easier. Good luck! Cant wait to see how it goes! #Lockboss
I got an idea. A pan/funnel with a few bar magnets going across under the key machine. It would need cleaned off occasionally but that would surely reduce the steel in the shavings by a large margin. I may have to prototype one.
@@CandyGramForMongo_ I considered that but I think it's unnecessarily complex. I have another idea to make cleaning simple. Think about how those permanent magnets people like to use in safe work. They have a twist to "turn them off" so to speak. A similar mechanism could work.
Really appreciate you sharing the fails as well as the successes PJ, being a #lockboss means always learning and failing sometimes as well as succeeding. We hope it’s more successes than failures in the end, but we also learn a lot more from the failures too.
As people below said, I totally cringed when you put them into your truck without a cover! Harbor Freight does have a giant very powerfull roller magnet for nails at construction sites, put down some plastic sheeting, pour the buckets out and roll away. #Lockboss
Many other commenters have excellent ideas for cleaning your brass. I say (as several others did) use plastic brush wheel and never have the problem in the first place as a thinking ahead #lockboss
I've recycled brass for a long time, the recycling places would always give me a hard time about the crappy oem keyrings. Almost rejected mine, but they took it. So now I make sure that no ferrous material is in with miscuts/old keys or shavings. #Lockboss
It looks like you need to make some kind of vibrating conveyor. with a bar magnet hovering over the top. I wonder how well a formica covered board (like a closet shelf board) from hardware store, a couple 17” mini magnetic sweeper heads or a 250lb retrieval magnet (from HF) mounted over the top of the board and then just pouring the shaving down the board from one bucket to another to pull all the steal out. If it works the first scrap sell would pay for the materials.
I'm sure those pails would have tipped over in my truck. And You got to carry them twice! You'll need to rig some sort of magnetic screening device (Harbour Freight nail broom type rig)? #Lockboss
last time I took brass to recycle, the guy helping me spilled so much of it. he sat there trying to scoop up brass shavings with his hands. I was like its okay please stop lol
The recycling plant near me has always used. Magnet to check the shavings for other metals. And if they find any they can't buy it as pur bulk brass but instead categorize it as mixed metal shavings and that price makes it worth sifting through the shavings. $60 for brass and $14 for mixed. But they never turned away any. But I guess they are more particular now. #lockboss
I have a powerful magnet with a release I use to get my media seperate from keys(or casings for people that reload ammo). That would do a good job getting that stuff out while getting it off the magnet easily. That being said I usually use a nylon brush so I don’t worry about much metal with my shavings. #LockBoss
A lid would have been a #Lockboss move !!!!! Have a great day, try pouring them over one of those large long magnets wrapped in plastic for easy cleanup.
I’m sure you can come up with a simple contraption to clean the brass. If nothing else you could get a magnetic “broom”, poor them out on the floor a little at a time, run the magnet over them and vacuum or sweep them back up. Or poor them over a magnet from one bucket to another. I can think of several way to clean them. #LockBoss
Interesting video, it is a bummer that you didn't succeed initially. I'm sure some magnets and a little bit of time sifting would clean it up. As always thanks for the great videos. #LockBoss
Depends on how crazy you want to get. Get a 6" PVC pipe, cut it in half lengthwise, and screw some neodymium magnets to it. Then pour the brass shavings down it like a cement truck chute. They'll catch the steel junk. If you wrap them in Saran wrap, you'll be able to avoid loading em up with steel and brass. #lockboss
A day in the real life of a #Lockboss shows the downs as well as the ups! Like others have said, put down a sheet of plastic, spread the shavings out then roll a magnet over. Some of the rolling magnets even have a hinged plate to release whatever they attract.
PJ, I thought that you would have run a strong magnet through the chips to pick out the shavings from the steel keys and wire brush wires!! SMH. Probably a good idea to do that as you add them to the bucket so it's easier than doing it all at the end! Lesson learned ... the hard way! Uggghh! Hopefully the recycling place isn't too far away or you'll just be paying for your gas there and back twice! Way to teach a lesson to the lock bosses. That was intentional, right?? Lol! #Lockboss
I'm like you, PJ...I wouldn't give up. I'd take the time to sift and send a magnet through them and bring them back. I don't cut nearly as many keys as you all do, but I end up making at least two trips a year to the metal recycler with old knobs, deadbolts, lock parts, etc. 2x 75 pound buckets usually gets me about $20. Good enough for this #lockboss
Oof, that stinks. Maybe try to filter the ferrous shavings out yourself with some magnets of your own? Possibly a switchable magnet so you can release the shavings from the magnet too? #lockboss
Oh man that was a boomers. I wonder on how you're going to remove the steel out the brass. Maybe spread the bucket on top of cardboard and with a strong magnet separate it. Let's see what you guys do. And good luck!! #Lockboss
What a bummer. Maybe next time find a clean space where you can dump them and go over them with a parking lot magnet and then put them back in the bucket #Lockboss
I think you need Billy to go through the shavings before you go to the recycling center Billy would have got it right and also kept the truck clean. #lockboss
I have a person that makes items out of brass and come to me and collects my key shavings and gives me .25 per pound which i figure is a good deal. #lockboss
I think it's all Billy's fault. Bet he's grinding off wired wheels. I check your orders for them Of course that could stem from the fact that I have been traumatized by my older brother whose name was Billy. #LickBoss better luck next time.
A good magnet will take car of it easly. Judt dont forget to put the magnet in a plastic bag, or a small plastic container the same size as the magnet to make cleaning it afterwards easier. Good luck! Cant wait to see how it goes! #Lockboss
I use an HPC Softie deburring wheel. Got it from you guys 😊 - no wire bits! #Lockboss
I got an idea. A pan/funnel with a few bar magnets going across under the key machine. It would need cleaned off occasionally but that would surely reduce the steel in the shavings by a large margin. I may have to prototype one.
Step up (pun intended). Electromagnets! Make an electromagnet ring fit to a funnel. Cleaning is as easy as turning it off.

Definitely something to keep in mind when it comes to making sure everything is separated. Thanks for sharing PJ 😎 #lockboss
This is why I periodically go through our buckets with a magnet
Make a magnetic sluice.
Minor problem solved by easy solution.
Thanks for sharing
Thank you for the video. As always, it is still instructional. The lesson to us all: Use a Magnet.
Many other commenters have excellent ideas for cleaning your brass. I say (as several others did) use plastic brush wheel and never have the problem in the first place as a thinking ahead #lockboss
Thank you for sharing your experience #Lockboss

I use the fiber brush on my key machine, no steel wire pieces. #lockboss
This just shows us how good we have to have our brass shavings#Lockboss
last time I took brass to recycle, the guy helping me spilled so much of it. he sat there trying to scoop up brass shavings with his hands. I was like its okay please stop lol
This is one reason I use the fiber brush to clean the keys and not the wire brush.

You'd think that they'd have some sort of a way to remove the wire wheel fragments from the shavings (i.e. a magnetic tumbler)
A lid would have been a #Lockboss move !!!!!

Even the OG #lockboss can miss the mark! Thanks for sharing.
We use coffee cans with lids and keep the lids on until clean up time. #Lockboss

Nice driving PJ. I would have spilled those buckets everywhere lol. #Lockboss
Did not realize the brush would shed that bad. My shavings are probably bad also. #Lockboss

Still working on my keys and shavings bucket. #Lockboss
Goonies never say die and a #Lockboss never says quit!🤘🏻😎
Like the Christmas bulb scenes in the movie Christmas Vacation, make sure to check every shaving Clark! Good luck. #lockboss

I wish, wait until you see the next video on this 👀 -PJ
#lockboss there are some very good suggestions in these comments. Brass is not cheap these days so it might be worth trying a couple.
#Lockboss needs some lids for those buckets.
Nylon brush? #lockboss
It's the little things that bite you in the backside. Lids and magnets. Next time PJ! #Lockboss
Oh boy, I never thought about that, you probably saved me the same fate.#lockboss
Oh man, that sucks. Definitely take a magnet to it before you go! #lockboss
Good to know. Eastern Oklahoma #LockBoss
I tryed taking some safe deposit locks. Stripped the locks to get the clean brass prize. Not sure it was worth all the work.

#lockboss. You should have bought one of the kids with you! They might have been able to “persuade” those folks. Next time
Yep, it needs to be clean. #Lockboss
I'm surprised they still wouldn't take them. Oh well, still look forward to what you can make off them after cleaning them up. #Lockboss
Can be a way of bringing in some extra money be a # lockboss
Oof, that stinks. Maybe try to filter the ferrous shavings out yourself with some magnets of your own? Possibly a switchable magnet so you can release the shavings from the magnet too? #lockboss
😮 #lockboss Nylon brush is how we roll.
Always wondered if that was worth it. Answered my question 😂 #lockboss
Great infromation. #lockboss
Sound like some good ideas listed below 🙂 #Lockboss

Magnets 🧲 -PJ
I was more excited about them not spilling then recycling #Lockboss
Haha -PJ
Interesting video #Lockboss
Braver than I, i have horrible luck i would spill those all over my truck
You would think they would give dirty brass price #Lockboss
It would seem like a legitimate recycler would have the means to separate brass from steel. Time to go back to the #Lockboss drawing board
What a bummer. Maybe next time find a clean space where you can dump them and go over them with a parking lot magnet and then put them back in the bucket
#Lockboss
I think you need Billy to go through the shavings before you go to the recycling center Billy would have got it right and also kept the truck clean. #lockboss
melt it down and make brass bars! #Lockboss
If at first you dont succeed, break out the magnets and try again. #lockboss
You win some, and you lose some. Just keep trying. #Lockboss
A #LOCKBOSS needs an nylon brush on his machine, lol. All kidding aside good video
I can't believe you wouldn't even buy it for dirty brass because the little bit of steel it was in it didn't matter # lockboss
You know what they say…. A bucket of brass is a pain in the (edit for being to crass) #Lockboss
As comment number 98. All I can say is “blah, blah, blah magnet, MAGNET..Blah,Blah, Magnet…?” (LOL) #LOCKBOSS
Oops!!!
That’s pretty ballsy, driving the buckets with out a lid on them.
There's nothing wrong with a fail every now and then 😅 #Lockboss
Well you can just use it as a barbell… do some presses….#lockboss
I have a person that makes items out of brass and come to me and collects my key shavings and gives me .25 per pound which i figure is a good deal. #lockboss
Being a #LOCKBOSS means admitting when you mess up too.
😊 #lockboss
Make it too hard, and people wont bother recycling. #Lockboss
Bummer! #LOCKBOSS

not your best video
Agreed….. but it’s what happened -PJ
If The Brush Is Steel Use A Magnet To Get The Pieces Out. Just A Thought ? 🙃 #Lockboss
Thanks for sharing the video bout recycling. James estep locksmith co # lockboss
