The 2024 Subaru Impreza RS Previews The Return Of A WRX Hatchback
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 19 окт 2024
- The #SubaruImpreza has always been the base line for the high-performance WRX and for 2024, the sporty #ImprezaRS trim returns with more power and a design that wouldn’t look out of place wearing a #WRX badge. This marks the return of the larger 2.5L F4 engine in the #Impreza family and it should attract budget shoppers looking for AWD in a small car.

My husband went to test drive a Crosstrek yesterday, but they had an RS, all black, he drove both but took the RS home. Its a nice car!
I just bought a 2024 Impreza sport. Very smooth and quiet. For $27k it's a steal. I didn't want to spend $31k on the RS lol.
Have you had any issues since owning?
You do very good reviews. Not like some who act like they're trying to sell you a car or another who tries to entertain viewers with a quirky personality... But can really talk in a normal tone of voice.
I know you are talking about raitis rides 😂
I will say, I have to give Subaru credit for just improving their vehicles over time. They really focused on quality and while nothing super mind blowing, it's a night and day difference compared to a lot of their older cars. They still keep it simple in this Impreza without any crazy tech, so people can still use this very easily, and the fact that it comes standard with AWD is a big plus, not many compact sedans offer this as standard, so good on Subaru for doing that, their Symmetrical AWD system is pretty good. And of course, I personally enjoy the deep, bassy sound of that classic Subaru flat 4 engine. Sounds really cool. The only real complaint is that the Subaru Starlink system isn't the quickest, so I think Subaru really needs to improve the software to something much faster.
Subaru vehicles are very dependable. They are 20% owned by Toyota. And use OEM parts made by the same companies.
I'd rather them dump more money into quality of the build rather than infotainment, if it's a functional infotainment system i will take that over a Jetta with their horrendous stock sound system but very smooth infotainment..
A very thorough review, I've heard the brakes are sensitive, slam the brakes and your through the windshield. But for Canadians this car is appealing especially on price. In the winter real AWD on a small car is a life saver, cloth heated seats are what you want in the winter, the aerodynamics, weight and gas mileage are much better than an SUV. The visiblity is much better than a Prius Prime PHEV, which starts at $50,000 CAD, $5,000 dealer add-on, 2 year wait, front wheel drive only, no rear wiper, disfunctional dash and requires you install a type 2 charger at your home. Notice the $5000 federal government rebate for the PHEV is suckedup by the dealship. Eh if you can afford a Prius Phev you can afford another charger at work, yeah yeah.
This or Crosstrek with a slightly detuned for fuel efficiency wrx engine, would be my ideal vehicle. Please Subaru, make it happen!
Na. All they need is a BRZ motor bore it a small bit.
Bring the sti back and start competing in the wrc
Try Mazda3 Turbo Hatchback
With a manual of course
I want the WRX hatchback...
With a manual
@@CrackerSmith that's the only way to have one, tbh.
I will not let go of my 2008 5 speed WRX hatch.
@@CrackerSmith this right here
Looks great without the plastic cladding. The droning of the CVT during acceleration was terrible which makes me love the six-speed auto in my Mazda 3 hatchback all the more. Great review as usual.
hehe, when Sofyan was doing his 0-60 runs, I swore the car was screaming in pain from those CVT noises!
@@TimeBinder13 Okay troll, thanks for stopping by.
That engine droning. And it's not even actual gears. Maybe the engineers were deaf.
Mazda ❤
You messed up, should have got the MT. I love my 3 premium in Mt
I don’t care for leather interior but I do wish the harmon-karden stereo and power seats were available without having to buy the sunroof. Not a sunroof user.
I feel like the Sport version should have everything this current RS has, and RS should have manual transmission option with better engine.
Just ordered an oasis blue one since I can no longer drive my 6mt crosstrek. I hope I can have as much or more fun with this!!
Have a current gen Impreza Sport. The RS would be a slight upgrade. Hope Subaru would bring the WRX AWD Sportswagon to the States. 274HP and 258 pd-ft torque in Australia market!
"Want compact AWD and wouldnt be caught dead in a crossover\SUV".
NAILED IT..!! I will never join that crowd. I am a multi vehicle owner. I dont ever have to compromise and buy just 1 car to attempt to do everything. Because that vehicle doesnt exist. There are always compromises. I ordered my 24 RS and should have it any day. Its a perfect normal, everyday commuting car. I still have sports cars, trucks, motorcycles that all serve a different purpose.
Excellent review. One of my fav review channels!
Really love this car. It was love at first sight for a car. Right now I drive a 2008 nissan altima 2.5s coupe and I feel like this is a very nice upgrade to that altima I already drive
Anything would be an upgrade from a 15 year old Nissan...LMFAO!
@Daniel C well no shit. Its an altima
Altima coupe is a nice looking car. A shame that coupes have almost disappeared from the market.
Especially coming from a Nissan itself 😂
@@fightnight14 now straight up older nissans are better. I don't know what they are doing now
Drop the price and add a manual. Looks way better than the WRX.
yeah looks better visually but the lack of any real "hot" engine makes it a deal breaker, but i suppose if all u want is a lukewarm hatch it'll work i guess.
Yuppp
Drop the price! Then you woke up right. 😅

Subaru is a great car, especially Forester and Outback.
I think this one will be a home run for Subaru 🤩
Thank you for a very informative review. The car looks awesome. Thanks for sharing, more power to you and your channel.
In Canada they have a model above the RS with leather. Interesting the video indicates that isn't available in the US.
Yeah it's not unfortunately. I don't understand why not, though.
For 2024? The US website doesnt even have the 23s on the website yet still showing 23s.
Even with AWD I would have a hard time choosing this over a Civic or Mazda3. Even if customers don’t choose leather it should be here since the competition has it. I think the RS should have gone more heard to head with an SI. This is more competing with the Sport Touring trim of the Civic
I have to agree with you. As both a mazda 3 and impreza owner (wife) in my opinion the 3 is leaps and bounds a nicer car and mazda is willing to deal whereas Subaru at least around here has a take it or leave it attitude. The awd in my 3 is just as good or better than the impreza also. My wifes impreza also ate the cvt trans at less than 50k miles but to be fair Subaru was amazing to deal with and gave us a loaner for the duration of the trans replacement, which was about two months.
Hard agree. Theyve lost their niche on this part of the market which is a bummer because its what they were really good at.
I completely agree. No leather is crazy to me.
I just bought one and even I agree.
It's a looker. So clean. Hope the next wrx looks like this. Also hope for an sti type option back for real diffs
they do have a WRX wagon in other markets, but not for north America :( , i wish the wide angle camera also worked as a Dashcam for ... missing accessory on all Subaru's
In 2021 I wanted an Impreza hatch with the 5spd but a Subaru dealer told me there weren’t any in inventory for their region. I ended up going with a Toyota hatchback xse with a 6spd that was on the lot in Indianapolis.
All back seat areas should have air vents no matter the size of the vehicle. Pets, kids, adults need those air vents!!!
Ordered the rs in oasis blue, I'm excited, though I miss the sedan. But the 2.5 liter is a welcome return for me after driving my partner's legacy with the 2.5.
They just had to get rid of more physical controls and put them on a distracting screen along with no hand brake smh
Electronic handbrake means it has brake hold now, who TF cares about the lack of a manual parking brake in an automatic only car anyway?
It still has physical buttons for temp and defrost. Just set it to auto anyway.
I’ve been looking at the WRX lately…that screen was a deciding factor in my NO. Stopped at Subaru again today to give it another look, and hated it even more. Oddly enough, I’m not bothered by the body cladding and I like the exterior.
@@bruddahmanmatt I do.
@@bruddahmanmatt I do. Something as critical as a hand brake should be physical. Also E Brakes are much more expensive to repair.
@@sergeantbigmac it's all about electronic control, even down to the turn signals. As I found with my Focus DCT, these things become "black boxes" that you can't repair, only replace, at extreme cost.
I like.. front end gives me Infiniti Q60 vibes
The original RS were sedans, the light on mirrors used to be on front quarter panels. I like the evolution.
yeah this is more of a 2.5TS, which was the same as the RS but wagon, and if i remember a bit longer gearing. So, if they had called this a TS I think it would have gotten less hate.

This car desperately needs the BRZ's version of the 2.4 with 220HP. If they had made an AWD Hatch with 200+ HP to compete against Civic Si and Golf GTI, it would sell like hotcakes.
Imagine another revvy, N/A 4 cylinder sport compact with AWD and a manual transmission. Hell, you can even name it the "Impreza 2.4GT" as a tribute to the old Impreza 2.5GT that came with the old WRX engine and 224HP when the 2009 WRX got upped to 265.
That would've been perfect, as the new N/A 2.4 could make around 220HP just like the old 2.5GT did. That's what people want (or better yet, a full-on WRX Hatch). But Subaru continuously denies the plethora of hot hatch lovers for some mysterious reason.
Will never happen. That engine is used under contract along with toyota. It will never EVER be used in any vehicle other than a BRZ\86.
@@boost331 I’m aware that will never happen. I just have space for it in my dreams 😂
Maybe if they made a sub-level GR Corolla to match with this engine, it could be another toyobaru homologation
@@BahhJustaLamb Its a good dream. 😁

I like watching videos by Redline Reviews :)
I prefer the looks of the crosstrek with the added ground clearance and the "hideous" cladding.
Looks beautiful
Thumbs up for the reviewer only.
I understand the manual has a much less take rate, but when introducing the RS badge back into the lineup, I find that to be a big swing and miss. On another note, funny to see you driving the roads around John Rudy park in york.
Im sure subaru of all companies would love to offer this in a manual, but last report I read less than 3% of their sales are for new manual vehicles. Their hands are tied.
What % of WRXs are being sold vs their entire lineup, and what % of them are manuals?
If this is aimed at enthusiasts it misses the mark
More attractive and mature looking than that wretched WRX design
it looks great and the interior is a huge step up but the fact Subaru totally messed up only offering it in a CVT is a deal breaker. Sad
Just want to say that as far as fuel economy goes, Subarus improve vastly as they break in. I have a 21 Outback Touring XT, and when I first got it the MPG was terrible. Could only get about 24-25 mpg while using some hypermiling techniques. Others in my family were only averaging about 20 when they drove it. After 8k miles, it increased to roughly 28-29 mpg. Then at 12k it increased to 32+. I now average between 32 and 34 mpg a tank. Granted I also did a lot of testing to learn some of its quirks to get better results over time. I see no reason why you couldn't average close to 40 mpg in the Impreza after break-in.
I have a '21 Crosstrek Sport, which shares the same engine as the '24 Impreza RS. I daily work commute is 1 60 miles roundtrip to/from San Francisco, during typical commute hours. Despite the stop and go traffic, I am averaging about 29 mpg, which is great considering the full-time all wheel drive. On the weekends, when the Crosstrek can be let loose on the freeways, the mileage per gallon picks up. It has no problem cruising at 80-90 mph and it gets to those speed relatively quickly. Nonetheless, because of the amazing resale value of the Crosstrek and my pending retirement, I will be switching over to a '24 Impreza RS.
No leather is not a detractor. When I see a leather interior, my first thoughts are “an old person picked this out, or it was bought from an old person” nobody wants leather interiors anymore…. Except residents of the Villages in Florida, lol
Hey Bud, did you notice at 20.52, your phone is taking pictures....Every time the light blinks (where the front facing camera is located, NOT the red blinking one), it takes a picture. Hmm?
The RS name is there but the RS spirit isn't. All they really had to do was bump the 2.5 to about 200HP, and give it a 6spd and it would have been a pretty solid revival for the badge. Fun and sensible. Instead it's just an AWD Nisan Altima with a hatch.
The RS' of yesteryears aren't as quick the 2024. Just go to the Motor Week channel and watch their road tests of the older RS....they certainly didn't do 0-60 in 7.5 seconds.
Every now and then the Impreza 2.0 gives you a good pull or two that makes you wonder why Subaru didn't tune them just a SMIDGE better. If you do get the cars, look into a K and N air intake and struct tower braces-- It's worth the $1k to make the car actually move smoothly.
Subaru needs to give this hatch the WRX treatment!!!
Excellent review! I'd much prefer a Civic hatchback. Much better mpg. Better handling. And available with a manual transmission.
youre fucking up pal your subie gang all the way fuck front wheel drive civic or toyota lmao
I prefer the AWD Subaru than a FWD Honda Civic
@@dha588Not everyone needs awd.
Hoping for a WRX Hatchback, but this is fine too.
This IMPREZA is the last car to hold the fort against the tiny greenhouse trend.
ooooo.... I think Subaru did something nice here.
I like the overall design, though I wish the mirrors were body color matched.
As an owner of 2 subarus, be on the lookout for oil leaks and you will not get the epa gas mileage if you drive a lot of in town driving. My legacy 3.6 epa is 18/25 city/highway respectfully. On the highway i was able to get 27mpg closer to when its new but now i get 23mpg average at 25%city 75% highway. When i lived 10 miles from work i was only getting 19mpg and that was with driving about 80%city.
I wish they would get rid of that big screen and get buttons back
Bro it’s NOT leather, and fabric seats are 100% more comfortable.
Thank you for tempering down on insisting that every car needs 23” wheels as well.
Good AWD, on freeway is good but if you do city drive a lot you will hate this CVT, engine is loud and take seconds before the car move. Step on gas it sling you over with no engine break.
I’ve been waiting for your review of this, my first new factory ordered car since ‘01 when I ordered my ‘02 bugeyes WRX wagon which I still have - 74k miles - and this RS will supplement as a daily driver/road tripper. I could easily afford a German or electric option but this will more than meet my needs for a decade or more before I switch over to electric. Great review and I’m confident of my purchase - hopefully coming in a couple of weeks.
You will love it. Has it come in yet? That's the real question!!!
@@chucktownattack delivered in June and has exceeded my expectations. The rigid chassis give this car great driving dynamics, very comfortable ride and excellent handling. I’ve found the powertrain very willing with plenty of power and the CVT (my first) responds well. We just came back from a 1400 mile road trip, from L.A. traffic, desolate highways to twists in the Redwoods and it performed superbly, 35 MPG, 500+ mile range. Love the updated EyeSight/ACC, efficient AC, great stereo, voluminous cargo area and amazing headlights.
@tpolerex7282 I just bought one. Like literally bought it on Wednesday and drove it back up to NY the next day.
I am in love so far. Everything you said I fully agree with.
The reason I asked was that it seems the dealers can't even get these on the lots. Tons of people looking to get this car.
@@chucktownattack Awesome, get through that 1000 mile break-in and then drive it like you stole it! I believe the lifted Crosstrek version of this car will remain the best seller. Sport wagons, hatchbacks and sporty sedans are in the junk heap of desirability. I’m used to, value and love Subaru AWD, even in dry, mostly snowless SoCa - I get to Tahoe winter every year. This sporty hatch is the closest thing to a modern sport wagon now available.
Subaru’s CVT addiction is seriously killing them
Sales would say the opposite
Toyota uses CVTs too
@@economiccrisis9267 so does Honda, and others.
@@zergilli9719 Subaru uses the CVT on all of its vehicles, Toyota and Honda do not.
@@economiccrisis9267but not in every model like Subaru
If this sells well, I'd like to see a WRX hatchback return at some point. I just hope Subaru is over their whole "put cheap looking plastic panels all over the exterior" phase by then.
Honestly i'd prefer more true RS. Give this a power bump to more like 200HP from its 2.5L, a 6spd and suspension borrowed from the WRX and it could be a GREAT car. But as it is the RS and now the TR are just shadows of themselves. Also, technically the TS was the wagon, not the RS, so really this is more of a TS revival.
No manual really killed my desire to consider this model
I have one 24 years older. Classic shape. Its my favourite shape ever then the hawk eye. Just uploaded a video of my build if its okay to mention on here. I get no views lol
Take a shot every time he says “smidge”
can't wait till they start showing off the base trim
The base is cheap but a huge downgrade. The dual split screens looks horrible. The 2.5 is now finally barely adequate. The 2.0 in the lesser trims is miserable.
No manual, no turbo, no buy. I will keep my decade+ old turbo WRX hatch a bit longer. :)
8:40 Those are the same door handles the 2012-2014 Camery had. And the unlock chime is the same. 🤔
They need to knock down the price by $5k for this to even be considered a good buy. This car is lacking in features to say the least. No leather seats, cooled seats, heated steering wheel, heated rear seats, rear air vents, full stop and go adaptive cruise, auto hold, navigation and many others. You can get all these features for $5k less in other cars.
Name one.

@@davidcohen2762 Very close. The Kia definitely has the advantage on the engine, the longer warranty, etc. but loses out on the versatility of being a hatchback.
@@dannytse8767 except in canada we have a hatchback version of it. Infact i own one.
So they’ve only added 2 additional speakers if you upgrade to HK?
Put the big WRX engine in and the manual transmission, and keep the rest untouched.
But then you'd have a 271 HP engine and a chassis that couldn't keep up. 😏
I think this is a nice looking car inside and out
It's a shame this only comes with Fisher Price seats.
Mazda 3 is cheaper and the interior looks like an S Class compared to this.
Sharp looking hatchback... it's a shame about the Linearcraptic & the RTV munching 2.5.
The biggest turn off for me is the lack of a manual. I’ve owned Subarus for over 15 years, but all of them have been manual. I traded my 2022 crosstrek manual for a 2023 because it was the last year of the stick. Unfortunately, it’s probably going to be my last Subaru as they’re dropping the manual on all their “normal” vehicles
Same. I will keep my manual WRX forever if I have to.
@@CrackerSmith when they discontinued the manual outback in 2017 for Canada I traded for a forester, and when they discontinued that in 2019 I got a crosstrek. Now that’s dead and the only way I’m driving auto is if it’s fully electric, which Subaru is not up to par with
I can’t decide between this or the Hornet GT. thoughts?
Doesnt mimic gears now? On your second attempt from 0 to 60 i was expecting to hear the "shifting" as you didn't launch it.
You forgot the Toyota Corolla hybrid also offers AWD.
Was hoping to replace our 2020 5 door Impreza manual with new one with a manual, guess we'll be keeping it. Would love a resurgence of manual transmissions someday.
It will never happen on a econobox. it's not a trend thing, it's due to government regulations.
Nice styling but I'll never get over the cvt drone :(
Most people dont drive the car with the gas peddal all the way down. At nornal speeds the CVT drives well.
@@zergilli9719 I mean yeah your right. I drove a Nissan Murano the other day it had a cvt and honestly the power and sound wasn't bad. I still do prefer a standard tranny tho

i don't think i'd take one over a civic hatch... but I'd defs do one over a corolla or mazda 3 hatch...
Standard transmission or I keep my 2014 until the wheels fall off. I figure about 20 more years. (I’ll be 93)
That transmission noise 😬
💪🏻 Excellent review... Even better Car 😁👌🏻
Looks nice but I dont see a reason for going with this over a Civic hatchback personally. The Civic interior seems far higher quality
I really hate how the CTV and engine is screaming.
The engine makes its maximum hp at 5,800 rpm.....so the engine is really giving its best when "screaming".
Looks like a Mazda3. Silly it lacks a manual option. Interior looks alright but I think the huge portrait style head unit is ridiculous.
It lacks a manual because it doesn't sell, why would they keep something that doesn't make them money
Unpopular opinion: I would say this is a "Subaru Crosstrek base" model :D without the claddings
As an owner of the 5th gen Impreza, I just don't see much improvements. There's no leather seat option and the only color you can get is black, the sedan is gone (yes I owned a sedan), hand break is gone, auto start stop is now featured on the car, the same problems I had on the Outback and Legacy on the screen is present on this car now, gas mileage is lower than the previous generation, I can go on but basically the only positive side about this car is a different engine option and more range. Other than that I just don't see this car as an upgrade.
I agree with you on pretty much everything except the leather seats. IMO leather is very overrated for car seats, Im the small minority who prefers cloth seats especially the ones here made from dense weave material.
But anyway ya its a little thing to most but the elimination of a physical hand brake is a big negative to me. I HATE auto start/stop. No fix on lack of physical dash HVAC buttons either. What was actually improved here other than a slightly different engine? Mazda 3 skyactiv hatch seems like a better option in this segment now.
I just now noticed that the intake tube and the manifold looks like a 4 legged face hugger from Alien 😂
is there a non red interior option? That red seat cloth... is a deal breaker to me.
So why does does the RS not have the same engine as the WRX or Legacy sport at least? The RS should of been made a fun drive.
My new Subaru software lags so much, especially on start up. My subaru also disconnects the apple car play...so annoying. Toyota, if your listening...just buy Subaru and give us hybrids that we want to drive.
Dude still brake-torques everything like it's 2015.
We’ve been begging Subaru for a turbo Crosstrek and a WRX hatch…instead we got a Crosstrek sedan (current WRX) and a gutless 2.5 RS hatch.
I’m not sure Subaru is listening.
This should be an Impreza WRX. No idea why Subaru wouldn't do this
Because This isn't Subaru main focus, therefore, it's an RS
Subaru will definitely bring up an improved version & will most likely be an RSR or RSX though
Great commuter car! 👍🏻
I had a 2017 Impreza 5-speed and it wasn't a great car. The 2.0 was lethargic, at best, and the 5-speed was awful. I think if Subaru's manuals were better executed, a lot more people would have bought one. That said, this new RS 2.5 is a very nice looking vehicle and it finally has adequate power and a more upscale interior. I just bought a '23 Outback touring XT which I love, although the Starlink software is a bit buggy. In any case, this new RS seems to fix most of what was wrong with the previous gen.
It's a pretty good looking hatchback. However, the package costs $2070 to add a 10-speaker Harman Kardon audio system, a moonroof, and a 10-way power driver's seat is overpriced. This price should have included a factory navigation.
Be nice to see a WRX version with a manual!
Over 30k for this, dam i can buy small suv with that price and get ton of more space 😅
Just get a Mazda CX-5 for that price fr
True
What are you smoking or being high on yall?
tell me the name of the decent small suvs that are sold for less than 30k today
The new CX-5 is around 40k+, ridiculously expensive
Also not everyone want to drive big ass cars such as the CX-5, so the impreza would be ideal for some people
my only negative is that blasted dark gray to black interior what is happening to car manufacturers today, every brand, every model has the same interior all dark gray to black
Remote start?
Funny how the reviewers are happy with a 180hp Impreza with cvt but unforgiving of the 186- 190 hp mazda 3 with a NA transmission.
i love the looks of my 2020 wrx series white with stage 1+ runs amazing
Nice, but $32k seems steep for 182 hp. But it is kind of a niche vehicle being an awd hatch/wagon.
That's the world we live in right now, sadly. $32k isn't nearly as much today as it used to be. The Civic and Mazda 3 hatchbacks aren't any cheaper and have nearly the same amount of power at the same price. The Corolla hatchback is cheaper, but it's also down a wee bit on power.
